I love this place. I usually wait a week or two post washes to write reviews when I get my hair done. Let me start by saying that my stylist Meghan and the owner David are just wonderful. Although, I was getting my hair done by Meghan, David kept co-consulting and made sure that everything went well and that I was comfortable with the highlights positioning etc. I got my roots touched up and half head of red and violet highlights. ( $ 240 ) I felt welcomed, and cared for, no one rushed me and I felt completely at ease when asking annoying questions about my hair and the color ( Also, drank 2 glasses of wine ! ). I gave 4 stars because my hair is really dry at the ends now, that was expected I guess, when you get your hair bleached, and some of the hair strands are a little yellowish :( But, I think it's my hair and I should just stop coloring it. This place is fantastic and I highly recommend it! Update: My hair color started washing off and by the 3rd week,my color had considerably faded and my hair was dry. Wow! What a find! I needed a hair cut last week and was lucky enough to find DNa. Laura really took the time to listen to my needs and gave me a great cut that I can style myself. Obviously, I look waaay better when she does it but nonetheless I feel pretty hip for my age. Love the chairs at the sink, it's like a bed and I almost feel asleep between the hand spa treatment and the neck and head massage. What?? yes, I'll have some wine. It is Friday after all. Finding a new stylist can be pretty scary but I know Laura and DNa will be amazing. Even without the wine! read more

This place is just not for me. I'm not old, nor conservative, but the service takes a hit for the sake of pretentiousness. They do some good coloring from what I've seen, but you have to make two appointments to dye your hair. I do not have that kind of time. It's a hipster haven that's too trendy for it's own good. I'm a vegetarian, Free People wearing, laid back chick...and could not stand the place. It's cool that they're organic, and they do have a clean facility, but it's obvious that most of their energy goes into cultivating an image...yet it's Urbana, not NYC for goodness sake. For me, I prefer a comfortable atmosphere that focuses on quality. When it comes to pricing, this place is ridiculous. It's hard to stay under $200 if you want a cut and color. The employees are constantly bumping into eachother, through this tiny door to the back room, which is loud, awkward, and distracting. The owners are far too full of themselves, it was uncomfortable. The front desk person is constantly running around to fix trival details, which leaves customers waiting. The front desk person also starts sweeping hair while you're still in the middle of the cut, which makes no sense because they just have to come back and do it again. The process of sweeping is also distracting and gets in the way of the stylist, slowing things down. The sweeping also risks tripping. The front desk person even does the blowdrying, because the stylists are too busy to give induvidualized attention. Some random employee will also ask you five million times if you want water, to the point you want to tell them to shut up and do the important parts of their job. If you're getting color, you will be left waiting without individualized attention...which hurts the service. They book appointments during your appointment, trying to fit another person in while your hair is processing. This leads to waiting around because theyre focusing on another person. If you're a trendy hipster with deep pockets, maybe you'll like it...but I would never recommend this place to anyone. read more

Alright... Now I feel like all in the world is good. The scariest thing besides finding a dentist and obgyn is finding a hair stylist. Since I moved from NC I have not had my hair done because one, I have curly hair, and two it's resistant gray. I was extremely skeptical about using organic color because of the grey. Also I have only used diva curl in the past as far as products go so was super excited to see the variety of organic options for curls this salon has. Everyone here was super sweet and super fashionable. Originally I was going to have to wait till feb to see Ana Maria but fortunately she had a cancelation and I was called to come in today! The color she chose to use was original and mineral... turned out amazing, the grey covered better than Aveda ever did. They also use organic color systems but since I had resistant grey she chose the other one. My hair was styled with a double twist technique and she gave me an awesome lesson so I could replicate at home. I am so thrilled this place exists and will be back. Oh! You know what i really loved!? When I called in to make an appointment They didn't try to stick me with any stylist, they asked specifically what my hair was like and offered to "pair Me" with Ana maria or Tori since they specialize in curly hair. After going to Salon Red in Gaithersburg for years, not really married to any stylist because I always left satisfied yet a bit underwhelmed, I was finally ready to move onward and upward and find a stylist that could give me a more updated and sexy look. So after doing quite a bit of research, I decided to give DNa Lab, and Taylor, who is supposedly the "blonde expert," a try. What a mistake. At our initial consultation we discussed trading in my grown-out highlights for a beige-blonde sombre look. Two weeks later I was in the chair ready to finally look like the inner-diva I was feeling inside. We went over the pictures once again, and since Taylor and I have similar fine hair (and aside from having blue-ish hair at the time), she's normally a light blonde, I felt safe with her expertise. Four hours later my hair looked better from when I came in. At least under the salon lights. When I got home I went from pleasantly content, to perturbed. It literally looked like I spent $400 on roots. There was no soft ombre. It went from super dark roots on top, right to brassy blonde. No transition, not much beige blonde. I called back 2 days later and spoke with her about my disappointment. It was a lot of money to not be happy with my hair and I was hoping it could be fixed to look closer to the pictures we discussed. The first thing she said was "if you don't have well water it's going to get brassy"..true, but I hadn't even washed my hair yet, it was her work, not my water. We make another appointment for me to come in and get it fixed. I came in this past weekend. We looked at the pictures yet again and she was able to see that it was still too brassy. She put a toner throughout my hair to counteract the brassy tones, took about 2 hours then began to blow dry. I stooped her. My hair was now too ashy and the blonde was completely dulled. She went to consult with another stylist who brought me close to the window, looked at my hair and the pictures and somewhat rudely questioned why I couldn't see that my hair did looked the same as the pictures. Um..nope. Then came the excuses. "well you can see there's a filter on this picture, and on this one, and on this one." I can buy that to a point. But 5 pictures of all similar melted blonde somber hair, and mine was dirty ash with no blonde left, I'm not an expert but I'm going to say it wasn't close and I wasn't going to leave unhappy again. Taylor stripped some of the toner out at the ends, which looked better. Except when I go home. The good thing is it was more blended on top instead of looking like roots. But the blonde on the bottom and mid portions of my hair was chunky in some sections and non-existent in others. I asked friends and family if my hair looked anything like the pictures I showed and the general consensus was "hell no." I was in tears. By this time it was a collective 7 hours in the chair and over $450 (including tips). I appreciated the fact that she did this without charging but to spend that time and still not be happy was ridiculous. I called again and told them my frustration and this time, the owner, David, called me back. David listened to my frustrations (but not without defending his stylist or trying to get a background check on my water and shampoo/conditioning routine). He said he could have me in the next day to see what he could to fix it, or would give me a full refund. I appreciated that. I just wanted this mess fixed so I agreed to come in and have him work on it. The next say, he sat me down and saw for himself the color and condition my hair was left in. He told me it should've been explained to me that to get that melted pale blonde sombre look I wanted, there would be some brassiness in the transition color and that there was no way to get my desired look without it. There was no mention of that with Taylor and I was in tears with my frustration asking him to fix it. Again and again I kept referring to the pictures and showing how my hair didn't look like them even a little bit. He said the only way to get the brass out completely was to darken my roots...come on, I'm trying to go lighter not darker! I let him do whatever he wanted and just threw in that the highlights should start higher in my hair to resemble the pics. 3 hours later, my hair doesn't look that much better...but thankfully it doesn't look worse. I really appreciate David taking the time to open the salon for me and trying to fix my hair free of charge, they obviously value their customers and want you leaving the salon happy. My only suggestion is to only go to Taylor is you want simple blonde highlights, because anything other than that, I don't think she can do it. And talk about filters, they use that on anything they post so be careful because I promise you, what you see on their website/facebook page, is not what your hair will look like in real life. Way too expensive for what you get. Giving 2 stars instead of 1 only for David's management. read more

Ordinary hair salon? No. This place is different on all levels. From the moment I called to make an appointment to the second I left, I was happily surprised with the friendliness, knowledge, and professionalism of every single staff member. I called to ask about coloring (as I am pregnant) and wanted to make sure everything was pregnancy safe. The receptionist I spoke to explained the products they use and put me at ease. I then came in for a consultation with Marissa who helped me develop a game plan to get me looking my best. She was able to fit me in her schedule the next day! I have to admit, I have long hair and a lot of it so it usually takes a bit longer (2-4 hours) when I get it colored which I wasn't looking forward to but I was so comfortable and she was so fun to talk to that the time flew! By the end, she did not only transform the look of my hair but the texture too. It is so smooth and feels so hydrated that I haven't stopped running my fingers through it! I am so impressed with Marissa and with this salon that i can't wait to go back. HIGHLY recommend. read more

I decided to go somewhere new, after being less than impressed with my regular salon. After asking me a few questions about my hair, the receptionist set me up with Taylor. I have fine, medium length hair, and I am trying to grow it out. I just wanted it trimmed and something to make it a bit more interesting. The salon was easy to find, right off of exit 26 on 270. My friend and I were both offered drinks upon arrival, and I will say that both their tea and french press coffee are quite delicious. I saw Taylor as soon as my appointment time came around. She asked me what I wanted to do with my hair and about my routine, then brought me to the hair washing station (the most comfortable I've ever been in). I opted for the complimentary hand treatment, which was a nice touch. The scalp massage during the conditioning was particularly lovely. Taylor decided to cut my hair dry, which I had never experienced before. She seemed very particular in her methods, and the end result turned out fantastic. I am extremely happy with the results. She never pushed products, but always told me what she was using in my hair. I actually was in need for a new shampoo, so I asked her for a recommendation. Wow, what a turnaround. I initially had a very disappointing experience with this salon and reluctantly wrote about it. I dislike giving bad reviews, but I dislike even more going somewhere that has decent reviews, expecting a great experience and having an awful one. Makes you wonder if all those great comments were rigged... That is not the case here. One of the owners of DNa Lab, David, reached out to me right away and even went out of his way to schedule me earlier than he usually comes in because that worked with my schedule. That alone was impressive. I am SO thrilled with my hair today! And I have not been thrilled with the color for a long, long time. At best, it's been tolerable; at worst, I have hidden it under hats and scarves. But no red or brownish-red I got at salons ever worked with my skin tone--until today. This was do-or-dye time, too. I was starting to think I should shave it all off and save the money. David understood exactly what I was looking for and worked absolute color magic. My hair is now a glossy reddish-brown with strategically placed highlights so it has dimension and movement. Best of all, it looks right for me--not aging, not overly bright, not like it belongs on somebody else's head. He also used the hair color line that's apt to be less problematic for my reactive scalp (the salon has two lines), and even took the precaution of spraying on a scalp conditioner beforehand. I really, really appreciate that he took my concerns seriously and went out of his way to make everything stellar, not just okay or good. The styling was impeccable, too. I have a bob, and most hairdressers immediately start rolling it under for the blowdry, giving the traditional soccer-mom look. David didn't even start that nonsense--yes!!! It has been ages since I've been wowed by a salon. Happy to say that DNa Lab and David went above and beyond! At last, found my new place. read more

I ended up making an appointment to go back in to see the stylist I saw at my first visit. She added highlights to hide my grays and gave me a cut. So far so good with my hair. Recently had my first visit with DNA Hair Salon for a cut and color. The whole experience was wonderful. The salon is beautiful and all employees work cohesively making the atmosphere positive and energetic with no pretentiousness. Whatever the owners are doing to set good standards of attitude and service, it's working. My hair stylist, Jesye, did an awesome job with both my color and cut, taking a lot of time to create a gorgeous color that seemed to take on a different and cool look depending on which light it was in and which way I turned my head. Adam way outdid himself serving me his own coffee/cappuccino drink that better than any coffee I've had anywhere. He stepped in to help finish off my hairstyle with some nice beach wave and took time to show me his well-developed technique. Beyond relieved that I have FINALLY found my go-to hair salon AND stylist! Taylor did my color and cut. To say that she did an amazing job would be an understatement. She loves her career and it shows. I will definitely be back to see her :) I have pretty long hair and a lot was done to it so it was a little pricey (Taylor gave me a quote before she began which I REALLY appreciated) but I was told that it would only cost about $40 to maintain which i'm thrilled about. I found my new salon! Went here for a hair cut and was very impressed. The salon seemed very well organized and modern, everything was very clean and the staff was super friendly. I was seen right at my appointment time. The chair in front of the sink is more like a chaise, the most comfortable I've ever experienced in a hair salon. My stylist Kaitlyn was just awesome! Usually I don't care too much for hair salon small talk but she was fun! She helped me figure out what cut I wanted, since my only request was to "just go shorter". The cut she gave me frames my face perfectly. I am so happy with the result that I'm definitely going back and I can only recommend this salon, and Kaitlyn, to anybody! read more

I couldn't even get an appointment with the stylist I wanted to see:( I kept getting passed around... I made an appointment to have Madison cut my hair well in advance at that. I waited two weeks to get in with her! I called the day before to check to see what time my appointment was because it had been a while since I made it... the receptionist said I had a 3:30 cut with Chelsey... I said no, I made my appointment with Madison and that's who I wanted to see. Madison pawned me off to someone else. It's a shame, I had heard such great things about her on Facebook so that's specifically who I asked for to do my hair. They switched me and didn't even have the decency to call me to let me know:( I'm not even going to bother going to this salon anymore. This wasn't the first time they did this either! I love this place. I have only been twice but have tried three other salons in Frederick over the last eight years, and this one is simply the best. Andie helped fix the poor color jobs from two other salons. After listening to my preferences and hair woes, she had clear directions in which to take both the color and the cut. The color is so much more natural now - with highlights that are truly blended in with my natural color instead of that striped look that others places give you. And the cut is simpler and easier to manage. Phew. What a relief to finally feel I am getting what I pay for. read more

For starters Love Love Love the salon. The atmosphere is perfect and the look is pretty cool I must say. I called to make an appointment for my hair and they suggested I come in for a consult which I was very happy that I did. David was very nice, helpful and very creative. He showed me some of his work so i could see how well he can high light, cut style etc. He was booked for about a week which at least shows he is a good hair stylist, but being a very impulsive person I so wanted my hair done asap. He offered to stay later on a Sunday so he could do my hair which i was very thankful for. From beginning to end the service was top notch. The shampoo was very relaxing and hand treatment was a very nice touch. I have been looking for a new hair salon to go to and I think I found it!! What can I say who isn't afraid to go some where new? I had been reading tons of review and asking around and the same name keeps coming up "DNa Lab Organic Hair Chemistry" so I thought I would give it a try. I made a appt with Laura I was kind of scared and excited at the same time. So I got there and the min you walked into the salon it was very welcoming they took me right away sat me down and that is when all the pampering started! They take your jacket ask you if you like anything to drink and talk to you as if you have been friends for a long time! Laura came over to me and we started my consultation asking me tons of questions about my hair and what I was looking for colors, styles and maintenance. I got a deep conditioning treatment which it smell divine, my hair color and there wasn't no funky smell because its all organic and I new hair cut. I kind of had longer hair and I was in need of a hair overhaul so me and Laura talked about doing something shorter and trendy. What was great about this whole thing was she talked to me the whole time about what she was doing how to do it and what she was using. Oh and I almost forget when she was shampooing and conditioning my hair she did a little hand treatment and it made my hands feel super soft. I finish and I just fell in love with my hair and it felt so smooth and the color had tons of dimension I just love it! Laura is super sweet and knows exactly what she is doing! I also got to meet the owners Ana Maria and David which were just as nice as her! I got tons of new product and they all smell so good and fresh I can't wait to use them in my hair! The price wasn't crazy like most salon I thought it was going to be a lot more than what it was! Oh one more thing the inside was so cool looking its kind of has a urban industrial building look the ceiling are exposed with cute little terrariums hanging from it! I am soooooo glad I found Tori! I cut my hair into a pixie a few months back but quickly realized there weren't very many (if any) stylists that could actually cut short hair in Frederick. I found Tori through a Facebook suggestion and gave her a shot. Fortunately, she herself had a pixie and understood exactly what I needed. I now see her every 3 weeks for maintenance, quick in and out cuts. The salon is also super cool and the folks seem to be very pleasant! Will keep going back! read more

This was the absolute worst experience I have ever had. Please be ware if you start using organic color you can not go back to conventional color. I feel that the owners of the salon are dishonorable by not disclosing this fact to customers. My hair is ruined as a result. Not only were my wishes not acknowledged during my consult and three hours later my hair was three shades darker and muddy looking. I do not recommend this salon. read more

DNA Lab is one of the best hair salons that I have ever been to. Their schedule is very flexible. Prices are very reasonable for the level of skill and service they provide. They use all organic and natural products, which is really important to me for wellness reasons. Everyone at the salon is very friendly. They offer tea and other refreshments at every appointment.They always call to remind me of my appointment which is so helpful because my schedule can be unpredictable. My son and I both see David. He takes his time to consult with me at the beginning of every appointment to make sure he understands what I want and also gives suggestions when I'm not too sure. David is great at cutting and styling boys hair too. He is patient and friendly with the kids. This salon is everything that I look for when shopping for business. As long as I'm in the area, I'll continue to come here and refer my friends/family. David and Ana Maria are two of the best business people I know!
