I've had a wide range of experiences at various DMVs but I came here recently to renew my licence after moving out of state briefly. I was stressed about not having all the right documentation, etc. but everything went super smooth and it was relatively fast (note: I did schedule in advance online). The employee that helped me was Grace and she was phenomenal - super helpful and kind and addressed all my worries with top tier customer service. read more

Showed up at 8:20. Got my apt set for 10am. I was able to go do errands and come back. This new system is a lifesaver. No more waiting with others and it's super efficient read more

Went in to renew licenses but no walk-in is available. Instead the made appointments for us on the same day. We went back later and the process is efficient. Checked in on a kiosk and waited in the first waiting area for our numbers to be called. The staff that helped us was extremely friendly, spoke two languages. Didn't take too long since we had all documents needed. Afterwards, we moved to the second waiting area to get our photos taken. Didn't take long at all for someone to get that done and print us a temporary license. Plastic ones will be mailed. read more

This might not be for everyone. That said, I did not have an appt., I arrived around 11am waited in a line of two people, waited less than 10 minutes. Explained why I was there. I was then given an appt to come back at 2:30pm the same day. I returned and again waited less than 10 minutes. Amazing!! Everyone was friendly and helpful. I was finished within 30 minutes. This worked great for me. If you get there too late in the afternoon as a walk in (2:30pm on the 2nd try for a different reason) there maybe a sign up reading They are no longer accepting walk-ins. 3rd visit I was there by 11:30am, no line, my questions were answered. Less than 10 minutes. I actually had a great experience considering it was at the DMV read more

We had an appointment and still had to wait for about an hour till we got called. But other than that it was a great experience. Friendly customer service and got what I needed done. read more

Efficient? Yes. Absolutely rude? Absolutely yes. Leaving the DMV feeling poorer, frustrated, and insulted even after having all documentation present and ready? Yup... but why? read more

I called asking if they can specifically do a salvage title transfer while still getting a salvage title just switching to my name. they say yes it can be done. i double check they understand what I am saying and they yes over and over again to just make an appointment. I leave work early and then tell me they can't. Staff is not knowledgeable in their work and waste my time. Staff need better training and customer service. Doesn't even deserve 1 star. Whole team doesn't even know what is allowed or isnt. read more

We came here bc it's the closest to us for a situation we have. Was it busy ? Yes ! We were prepared to stick anyway. The kind DMV worker with glasses and sandy blonde hair gave us a number and has us take a seat. We were seen in reasonable time for a quick matter which she resolved in 2 minutes. Thank you for your service read more

I had an appointment so things went so quickly that I couldn't believe it. The man that helped me was great . He knew what he was doing and did it well.He also has a great personality. read more

Probably the absolute worst waiting system I have seen in my entire life, I came in as soon as they opened and it took 4.5 hours. Literally just shit. No phone to call them nothing read more

Not sure what the point of having walk-ins still when they are constantly skipped by people with appointments. You're telling me one window can't at the very least be dedicated to walk-ins? What a joke. read more

The service was quick once your number is called but you definitely have to make sure that you get there asap and make sure you don't have anything planned for at least two hours after you get there. It's the DMV, so I wasn't surprised. read more

This place IS AWFUL. I have sat here for THREE hours being skipped over by appointment after appointment. I have been 'next' for over an hour. Not ONE employee can do a walk in??? The wait is now SIX HOURS. I am currently shaking from low blood sugar and these people DO NOT CARE. I will NEVER set foot in this JOKE of a location again. They should be ASHAMED of themselves. Simply DISGUSTING service. read more

Really satisfied with my appointment for a renewal driver's license--30 minutes in and out. The employees were efficient, professional and friendly. read more

They literally don't care how long you have to wait. I have an 11:30 "appointment", arrived on time. Was assigned #123, they were on #95 at that time. 4 people are working the windows, one person on intake. A woman just came in, 12:10, and was assigned a # in the 140s. She asked how long it would realistically take and the intake guy said, "I don't know, if you have to leave please use that door." Then he laughed and said, "DMV blues!" Hahaha what a fun guy. Its 12:15 now and they are on #107. I have another appt somewhere else at 2:00. I'm legit concerned that 1 hour and 45 minutes won't be enough time for me to get this done. Let me say that again. It sure seemed like I could make an 11:30 appt and reasonably expect to he able to do other business at 2pm. But maybe not. And they don't care. Not a bit. They joke about it. Employee just yelled to the waiting room: THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU COME HERE AT LUNCH TIME, EMPTY WINDOWS! HA HA HA. Then he held up a stack of comment cards and yelled: ANYONE WANT TO TELL US HOW THEY FEEL? ANYONE WANT TO TELL US HOW WE CAN DO BETTER? read more

I know DMVs are known for being slow, so I made sure to go as early as possible. The line was already long, but the wait was not bad and the employees were sweet and kind. read more

I've frequented this location 4+ times at this point and the timeline for service is atrocious. Even if you get here when doors open the wait extends to 45 minutes plus. The service desk attendants do the bare minimum to assist people and they hold all forms (besides DL) behind the counter so you walk in, get a number to wait 45 minutes for a form, and then have to wait another hour to be helped by an actual clerk who processes information. On Friday, I got here at doors open and waited 4 hours to be helped with a title transfer and new plates. I'm back on Tuesday at doors open and have been sitting for an hour just to retake my knowledge test even though I was told I'd have no wait and be put right through. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why this system is so archaic. Forms should be all online or out for folks to reduce wait time. This place is soul crushing and inconvenient by design. If you live in Portland, skip getting a car and take the bus. Coming here makes me wish I never drove. read more

The Karen at the Information desk was rude to deal with. I have never had such poor service in any place. I will be scheduling my appointment at a different location. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. I think every negative review on here is the most accurate information. 1. There are about 10 stations there are three open and over 100 people waiting. 2. They will handle one person and then leave their desk to go ... who knows where for over a half hour. 3. There is no structure to or formation to this facility. Absolutely horrible horrible infrastructure. Five thumbs down if I had five thumbs I would put them all down in the face of the government and then move to Canada. ZERO STARS. read more

DMV - A horrible experience. - Departments of Motor Vehicles Near Me - Portland, Oregon

They NEVER answer the phone! I mailed in two different envelopes of forms and checks - one to get the title for my truck, which I paid off, and the other to register a new trailer. After a six week wait, the Oregon DMV sends me a new registration for my truck and no title (I did not need a new registration) and a license plate for my trailer, but no registration! So, I've attempted and attempted to call the DMV to talk to a live person to say "what the hell?!", but they won't even let you stay on hold and wait. They just hang up on you. Today when I called, the automated message said the whole state's call center was closed due to poot air quality....meanwhile, I work for the government and it's business as usual for us. Any excuse to get out of work I guess. The worst part about this lack of service is that our tax dollars go to support this "service". If they can't produce the service they are hired to do, then reduce my state taxes. read more

The DMV is always underfunded so they can't staff well but I found them to be courteous and knowledgeable for the most part. There are still folks who, when faced with an uncommon situation, will tell you to get on the phone with home office and handle it yourself. That's the only mark I have against them. Otherwise it's clean, orderly, friendly and probably as efficient as they can be, given their resources. Thanks for your help! read more

Don't take your driver test here unless you want to be yelled at during your whole test. Took a friend here for their driver test and they were nervous like anyone who takes their test for the first time. After the test I could tell something was wrong because she wanted to literally cry and she explained to me that not even 5 minutes into the test the instructor had yelled at her and continued to throughout the test. Unacceptable and not helpful when someone is already nervous! read more

The service is great once u get it. But be prepared to sit for hours. This place is perpetually "short-staffed".

If you like to be spoken to in an extremely rude fashion, come here! Every attendant speaks to customers in a very condescending manner. Not from the US? Expect to be treated like garbage and be given very little guidance during whichever process the ridiculous OR state laws require for your task. The employees here each give different instructions, then speak to you like you're a child when you follow the previous instructions that were given by a different employee. Why can't they all be on the same page? I actually heard an attendant tell a customer who filled out paperwork inaccurately (English was not their first language), "it's YOUR time. All about how you wanna spend YOUR day." Why, why, WHY is this process so incredibly cumbersome and costly?! Seriously. I thought Washington DMV was a nightmare. It is a panacea compared to Oregon DMV. A blissful dream. read more

For a DMV, not bad place to come. Can't believe I am giving 4 stars to a DMV. However, if you have to go to one, the people here are super nice. Get here early if you are testing. If they don't call you by 4:00, you won't be able to. Also, cash or check only. There is an ATM if you need one. read more

Was skeptical I arrived around lunch. Lines, people, not chaotic, but looked bleak. I walked in, pulled number 267, they were at 166! Yikes. Keep in mind, they do have a system and you have to get into two lines. One first, One to actually talk to teller. Trust the system. So, I couldn't wait for 267. I was there shy of an hour, but I just couldn't wait longer on a work lunch break. The initial line to talk to the information desk is worth it, they will direct you, make sure you are fully prepared to actually conduct the transaction. Atmosphere. Wide, Huge, mall like lighting, nice clean bathrooms, plenty seats to do paperwork/wait. It sucks waiting, but the staff are legit. They are doing their best directing folks. They offer all the DMV services here. Today I finalized my business. Disappointed lost title replacement takes 4-6 weeks. Plus, $93. read more

I feel compelled to write a review for my experience today getting a REAL ID. I made my appointment online, followed the instructions and arrived with all my required paperwork. My appointment was for 10:10. I was a few minutes early, but we were let in on time. I never waited in line and was out by 10:21. It was the most efficiently run office I have ever seen. Wow! Amazing. read more

This is THE WORST DMV in all of Portland, Oregon, with THE WORST SERVICING OF PATRONS "IN THE ORDER OF NUMBERS PULLED"/1st Come-Last served, THE WORST customer service, THE SMALLEST AMOUNT of counter workers (3 total) AND, THE RUDEST employees!!! I've had to go to the DMV times within the last week and the Mall 205 location is efficient and has friendly & competent service, as well Gresham location but the Gresham location is the very best DMV, in all of Portland!!! read more

I waited 2 hours and 15 minutes. The person at the front desk was really polite and sweet. She made sure I had all my paperwork and answered all my questions. The lady at the counter that helped me stayed through lunch break helping people in line. She had to be hungry but she stayed calm and collective. When I was finally up to be helped I didn't have everything I needed and the lady helping me talked me through everything and I found out I did in fact had everything I needed I just didn't know where to look. The wait time sucked but there isn't anything to be done about it. read more

They dont take walk ins past 330 and they try to argue that since my license is out of WA. I can't register a vehicle even tho I showed proof of residency in portland. Literally going to stop friends family or anyone who ask not to come to this office. read more

This place is an utter disgrace. By far the worst processing of any state I have lived in. Including Vermont, Connecticut, New York(!), New Jersey, Arizona. Clearly the result of a hopelessly twisted bureaucratic rules drafted by lawyers, whose registration is handled by their limousine drivers. Executed by an undermanned staff, half of whom seem to be on break at any time. Typical average processing time per person of three-five minutes and several hundred are the usually waiting. read more

An amazing DMV with fast, friendly, courteous service!! I arrived 17 minutes before it opened on a Tuesday. I was number 20 in line! Friendly, happy people moved me through quickly. So, I only spent a total of 45 minutes at the DMV, including time in line! read more

Unbearably slow and unhelpful. Hope they will join the 21st century of customer service and technology in this millennium but unlikely.

This review is less about the actual employees helping customers and more about the general state of the DMV here. The wait time is always pretty terrible. 3 hours seems to be the quickest I have ever been in and out of here. It's pretty clear that this is an underfunded undersupported, system. There is never (ever) enough staff online to help customers and everyone behind a desk is responsbile for a thousand and one types of services. The employees somehow manage to maintain their humanity through it all, but god knows how. read more

Slow like a snail. I think they enjoy watching us squirm. Kidding. Overall the employees here are in a good mood despite dealing with the crazy public folk. The place is clean. There is plenty of room to sit or stand. You will be doing either for a while. I was here 1 hour until I was at the front of the line. Get here early. read more

This place needs more employees working to help people in a more productive manner. I waited for over four hours the other day and never got my number called even though all I needed to do was take a knowledge test. The computers weren't even being used. Now I'm missing more work waiting yet again! It's extremely frustrating and the people who work at the information desk seem very apathetic, slow moving, & rude. There are several empty counters where there should be employees helping all the people lined up and sitting around for hours. This place is a soul sucking, slow moving, waste of time! read more

Worst DMV in Oregon, those POS's are useless getting paid for nothing, DMV needs to fire everyone and hire some competent people, I have to give one star because 0 stars is not available. They send you out to make an appointment and the next available appointment is in November!!!! read more

Is this really the only DMV in North Portland?!? This place is why people HATE going to the DMV. You have to get there at least 30 minutes before opening if you don't want to have wait all day. Even if you get there early it still takes an hour to get called!.......and why do to they seem to only have 4 people working at a time?? So frustrating! I hope I don't have to go back soon. read more

Ok. This place has none of the charm of the old N Portland location that was so very convenient, and it's located in a strip mall, but it's really not so bad. The DMV has come a long way since the days of yore when you stood the whole time and it took a while! It's bright, the folks here are friendly and helpful (Andre was my favorite today). The wait was minimal, only a couple minutes in line on my feet (which is new and seems unnecessary). But all in all, a not unpleasant time at the dmv. read more

I don't know why I feel compelled to leave a review for the DMV but since we are in a pandemic I think it's important for others to know what to expect. The staff at this office are extremely courteous and knowledgeable; I would rate them 5 stars if I could. I saw an employee being harassed by an angry patron today and she handled it better than I ever could. The lady who helped me with my visit was extremely helpful and fast. However, the reason I'm rating this 3 stars is because the appointment system and wait times are ridiculous. I made an appointment months in advance, showed up an hour early, and still somehow managed to not actually get help from a DMV employee until 1.5 hours after my appointment was scheduled. In other words, I was at the office for more than 3 hours despite having an appointment. The actual appointment took less than TEN minutes; the rest of the time was spent waiting in various lines. First you queue up outside, then eventually some people are let inside and put into another queue. That queue sits down, then you get called into one or two more queues until you're actually at a desk getting your business done. The employees are definitely doing the best they can, but management and administration need to step in and figure out how to manage this operation better. There's definitely an easier way to do this than how they're doing it now. read more
