    "Skip the wait" my ass
    Erin F.

I've frequented this location 4+ times at this point and the timeline for service is atrocious. Even if you get here when doors open the wait extends to 45 minutes plus. The service desk attendants do the bare minimum to assist people and they hold all forms (besides DL) behind the counter so you walk in, get a number to wait 45 minutes for a form, and then have to wait another hour to be helped by an actual clerk who processes information. On Friday, I got here at doors open and waited 4 hours to be helped with a title transfer and new plates. I'm back on Tuesday at doors open and have been sitting for an hour just to retake my knowledge test even though I was told I'd have no wait and be put right through. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why this system is so archaic. Forms should be all online or out for folks to reduce wait time. This place is soul crushing and inconvenient by design. If you live in Portland, skip getting a car and take the bus. Coming here makes me wish I never drove.

    A horrible experience.

The service is great once u get it. But be prepared to sit for hours. This place is perpetually "short-staffed".

Unbearably slow and unhelpful. Hope they will join the 21st century of customer service and technology in this millennium but unlikely.

The same is true for all "services" like the DMV. If you weren't forced by law to come here then you never would.

We made the mistake of choosing to let an Oregon car dealership process our WA state licensing paperwork thinking it would be easier. We quickly learned our lesson and will opt to take care of it ourselves next time. A check was overnighted to us from the OR dealership, made out to WA DOL with instructions to bring it to a specific licensing location near our home. As we all know, any kind of DMV office is no picnic. We arrived at this licensing office, took a number, and waited an hour before being called. The lady that helped us was super nice and friendly. I wish I would have gotten her name. Anyhow, after entering all the pertinent information into her computer, she realized the dealership had made the check out for the incorrect amount. It was about $300 too much. Ugh, we had to contacts the dealership and have another check overnighted to us. Very frustrating, especially with all the helpful calculation tools available at the WA DOL website. The lady gave us a printout of the exact amount required to register our vehicle and get license plates. She was so apologetic and helpful, even though it was totally not her fault. Once we contacted the dealership and received the new check, we returned to the same licensing office. We were fortunate enough to get the same helpful lady, which made the process quick and painless. She remembered us too, which was nice. My only gripe about this location is how long it takes to be taken care of. It seemed like the closer it got to closing, the more we noticed employees emerging from the back room to help out. Not sure why they couldn't have come out sooner, but waiting an hour seems beyond reasonable. Both times we came here our number was about 15-20 numbers behind the one currently called. We also spent over an hour here during each visit. Overall, the employees here are very knowledgeable. If you're not in a hurry, I would highly recommend this licensing office.

To my surprise, I was helped within five to ten minutes, which was impressive given how full the lobby was and that only a few staff members were assisting customers. The person who helped me was friendly, personable, and explained everything clearly. We even had a brief, pleasant chat about their dog, which made the whole experience unexpectedly enjoyable. That is not something I ever expect from a licensing office. I was there to get my Washington state registration, and the process was fast, smooth, and stress-free. Super efficient, super friendly, and genuinely a great experience. I would absolutely go back for any services they offer and highly recommend them.

Knowing that the (current) deadline is May, I had to make an appointment just in case I had a reason to fly somewhere...hey it could happen. My appointment was at 10:30 am. The line was wrapped around the building. I was pretending like I was ok with it, but when someone came out and said everyone with appointments could jump the line and move up, I kicked it up to fourth gear. Unfortunately this excitement didn't last long. I got to the front of the line, and then an announcement comes over the intercom. "Entire state of Oregon has outage. License printing is down." I know I wasn't the only person upset, but it kinda killed my buzz. The woman who verified my information was super nice though. She was very impressed that I had all of the correct documents. Well since it opens tomorrow at 8 am, I am gonna take the trip out there and pray that the system is back up. If I am smart I will call before I go.

Disappointing Experience at Lake Oswego DMV…read more I had a very disappointing experience at the Lake Oswego DMV during my appointment this morning to transfer the title for a vehicle I recently purchased. When I approached the counter, I politely greeted the clerk with a "Good morning." Instead of returning the greeting, she stared at me and immediately said, "What do you have here?" Her demeanor made me feel unwelcome from the start. I handed her the packet of documents the Audi dealership had instructed me to bring for the title transfer. Her response was, "Why are you giving me all this paperwork?" She pulled out only the title and one other form and handed the rest back to me. A few moments later, she asked where the promissory note was. I explained that it was likely among the documents she had just returned to me. After locating it, she took out a magnifying device and spent several minutes scrutinizing the paperwork. She then took the documents to a supervisor and was gone for approximately ten minutes. When she returned, rather than explaining what was being reviewed, she appeared frustrated that the documents were legitimate and complete. She then asked whether the vehicle was present. I explained that I had driven a different vehicle to the appointment. She informed me that she could not process anything without the vehicle being there and handed all of my paperwork back. At that point, I felt degraded, disrespected, and treated as though I was an inconvenience rather than a customer. Whether intentional or not, the clerk's attitude throughout the interaction was dismissive, unfriendly, and unprofessional. I understand that DMV employees must verify documents and follow procedures. However, there is a significant difference between doing one's job and treating people with courtesy and respect. A simple greeting, clear communication, and a professional attitude would have made this experience entirely different. The State of Oregon should expect and require a higher standard of customer service from employees who interact with the public. No customer should leave a government office feeling disrespected and embarrassed after simply trying to complete a routine transaction.
