10/2/18 - I had a good experience today! Despite the lines being long lines; I was in & out within 30 minutes. I am glad they have the machine on the side (big yellow box) that lets you pay for your renewal by cash, debit or credit, just as long as you have all your paperwork with you, because it does ask for you to scan the barcode on your renewal notice. It takes about four minutes for you to put in your information and pay. It gives you your renewal stickers on the spot! read more

So, to put this whole thing into perspective I got my permit last August. And I tested in June. I've been practicing for 10 months, and I booked an appointment 2 months in advance to be certain that I was ready. Obviously when the time came for my drivers test, I was understandably nervous. The lady seemed nice enough, we went over car functions, hand signals, etc. And then, she got into the car. She immediately asked me to put the passenger and driver windows down. Mind you, we were sitting in the same vehicle, and both already wearing masks. She claimed that this was apart of "Covid protocol" but it's what I now believe to be a personal preference that she pushed as a "regulation". Immediately when we began, my view was obstructed. I have long hair and because of this I don't ever drive with my windows down due to my hair flying in my face. I was trying to pay attention to the road, while listening to her instruction at winds going 45 mph. I missed one of the turns, and I was blamed for not listening at the end of my test. When in reality, I couldn't hear her because she insisted that the windows be rolled down. She also said I had made a critical error with "all 4 wheels in an oncoming lane", this did not happen. I was safe, and if this were true, she should have responsibly intervened, and should not have allowed me to drive back to the DMV. Which she did. She condescendingly told me that I should "practice more" and that I should "get more hours in". But now, feel as though she failed me before we got started, and sabotaged my test. The examiner lady who helped us was a complete b***h. She was smacking her gum so loud the entire time. The way she would talk to you made you feel so stupid and uncomfortable. I've never had such rude customer service before. There was a guy next to me inside his car to take a test I'm assuming and his dad most likely was on the outside of the car and she starts yelling at him to turn car off. Obvi the kid couldn't hear bc windows were up but that dad had hearing aids in that she didn't realize but she needs to be more nice regardless read more

Terrible Coming here was just as crazy as all of the other dmvs. The real is thing has really held up service. 1 person to check in to get a number... and that seems to be the case everywhere. This whole experience has been absolutely mind blowing. First tho, people here are more helpful and less rabid than some other locations and by and large are pretty chill, more than I could keep it together in this situation. They're stuck in the middle of this Orwellian nightmare with me. I've been trying to get a California driver's license for 8 years. I have a perfect driving record. I have never failed a test. The documents they decide they want to reject rotates. At first, they were rejecting my social security card. When they were rejecting that, they didn't say, oh, by the way, your birth certificate and residency documents also aren't good enough. Getting a new social security card took years. The government uses a third party identity provider that just does not work. It sends you in login circles, where after doing 2FA auth it wants you to log in again then makes you do 2FA auth again, forever, or else it's trying to make me confirm info on some credit report that is not accurate but I don't know which of the three so getting it fixed is a whole other nightmare. Finally, finally I got a new social security card... then they decided that my official copy of my birth certificate wasn't "original". I showed up with the o-riginal birth certificate signed by the doctor, with my baby feet stamped on it, and the seal of the small midwestern town I was born in the form of an embossed gold state seal sticker on it, on elaborate, finely printed paper, with my and my mother's hospital bands. They looked me in the eye and said "we need the original". I've been running around showing this to people and telling them what happened and people are offering to go in to the DMV with me to see this with their own eyes or do unrepeatable things to try to fix this. This is an abbreviated story; in my 20 or 30 visits, I wore out a birth certificate that had the seal embossed in to the birth certificate because passing it through the slot in the window so many times made it fall apart at the edge of the seal. They liked that one. Credit card statements were rejected as proof of identity because they wanted a lease, but I was casually paying rent to a family friend. Over and over, a document accepted once won't be accepted the next time. Trying to show them a pile of three official birth certificates just made it worse than guessing which one they might accept and showing them that. And I'm not being a jerk here... again, I realize they're trapped in this hellscape with me. When they say they can't take my documents, I say thank you, about-face, and march out (which is what my friends want to help fix). During this eight year saga, my previous driver's license expired, then my passport expired. In the social-security-birth-certificate-two-proofs-of-address shuffle, they don't ask for that, but later on, they do, so having had (past tense) a whole passport with Iceland, France, Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands stamped in it didn't help at all establishing that I am me. Getting back in to this country is easier than getting in to California. The latest birth certificate added a year to this saga too. This small Midwestern state requires their document be notarized; California Notary Publics aren't allowed by law to notarize documents from other states. Instead, they have to notarize a separate piece of paper affirming that they've checked my ID and signature and I appear to be who I say I am, then they may staple that to the other document. So in the estimated 30 days of my life the CA DMV has drained from me, visiting an old granite courthouse planted among the cornfields is part of the tally... not forgetting that my actual original birth certificate from the hospital with my stupid baby feet on it isn't good enough. In all of this, the DMV keep asking if I want a real ID. I say not if there's any chance that it's going to cause any problems. Becoming cynical that I would ever manage identity documents for this state, I also started saying over and over that I don't need a driver's license if there's any chance it will cause any problems. Just give me an ID. In El Cerrito, I was riding my bike to the DMV, or walking over (bit longer walk but the Ohlone Greenway is fantastic). Now I'm about as far as you can be from a DMV as possible, and I still do not have a car, tho I had an out of state driver's license, and I kept saying "if a driver's license might possibly cause any problems, I don't want it, I just want an ID". This was apparently ignored. The previous time I was in, I spent about 4 hours there waiting in various lines, then it turns out that I had to take a written test to get the driver's license, but then it was too late in the day to the test, so I had to come back. Argh. Came back today. Wait in three different lines, again. Take the test. They tell me that I have to schedule a behind-the-wheel driver's test. What part of "if a driver's license will cause any problems, I don't want it?" wasn't clear? read more

I dread going to the DMV. The lines, the annoyed people, ugh. I will tell you this is the ONLY DMV I will go to because they've made what can be a horrible experience be a pleasant one. This DMV is often overlooked because it's located in a small town. The building is also located in a hidden area so it's easy to miss. I cannot stress enough the importance of making an appointment. I showed up for my 8:00am appointment at 7:45am and found a "Black Friday line" wrapping around the building. I was starting to get claustrophobic when a DMV officer moved "appointments only" into another line that was 1/4 the size of the first line. The beauty was, we also got to walk in first like a first-class ticket on a airplane and received our corresponding tickets for what we were there for. I changed a title on my car and it took 20 minutes from my appointment time. It would have been less if she didn't have to check one thing on the pink slip. I also had a really nice officer. DMV people usually have rude reputations but mine actually struck conversation with me to keep me entertained. read more

Every time I'd check on the status, the rude worker would tell me "I'll call your name when it's ready, it's not ready yet". 3 hours later, I asked another worker to check and turned out they never even graded the damn test! Lodi DMV is where I travel an extra 30miles here,Stockton DMV Large office is congested with long lines . I go early 8am when they open to avoid long lines and long waiting for an appointment. DMV has a Kiosk, you scan your DMV registration for tags, put cash or credit card ,out printed registration and new tag , I use this and done in 5mins no long lines here just 2 people ahead of me . Went there to register my imported vehicle, Vehicle Inspector was super rude, repeatedly asking her that did she record the vehicle mileage in kms, she kept totally ignoring my question and kept repeating "see the other representative at the counter" until I gave up and proceeded to the counter inside the DMV. I was furious to file a complaint as there was no other car there for inspection so there was no reason to rush me. But I left as I had some business to take care of. read more

My sister has been practicing so much for her drivers test,, she finally takes her first behind the wheel test and the lady she got two days ago, literally screamed at her since she got out of the parking lot of the dmv, she made her go to the side and screamed at her to put her mask to her nose and yelled at her the whole way and demanded the AC to be put on. At the end of her drive she told her to not get off because she was not going into the dmv . She made my sister cry.! This is not the way to treat someone!! My sister and mom did go report her and all that was done was "we will talk to her" ! They mest up her first time on her test, now she has two times left on her test. I have been dealing with DMV for 38 years now in Lodi. Can it be frustrating, of course it can. Many high volume departments that have to deal with many laws and regulations all take time. Being frustrated won't help your mind set nor will it speed up the lines. I recommend appointments, just like a Doctors Office they do their best to keep it on time. Have all your documents in your lap and be ready to go. If everyone did that it would speed up the process. I found out the hard way. Driving is a privilege not a right. Take a game like Soduko to pass the time. There our hours that if you didn't bother to make an appointment that are better than others. 4pm is best. I cringe at the thought of long lines at the DMV. I know it can take forever. I came exactly at 8 am, when it opens and there was a lot of parking, the building was nice, and the area wasnt too bad. (i drove all the way from stockton. I refused to go to the one in stockton because the area just seems so sketchy). There was probably about only 15 people in front of me. I only had to wait 20 minutes before being seen. The staff were kind of friendly, some were not. even though its 15 minutes away from stockton, id suggest going to this dmv instead. If you dont want to go super early, you can look online and watch the wait times. Although the only thing I didn't like, which goes for all DMVs, was that they told me to get a new drivers license/ID would take 2-3 months because of the new cards. If you plan on going anywhere that requires ID (aka airplane/clubbing) i recommend doing it asap. read more

Appointment phone number didn't work all last week, forced to come in without an appointment. Wait an hour to get to front of the line .. then it was break time. There is NO way that she could keep up with the line in front of her given the process that they use. This agency should really take a clue from private industry (Kaiser) and allow kiosks to give "ticket numbers."
