If anyone asked me which DMV they should visit when they absolutely need something done, I would say "Garner Garner Garner......". My license was expiring yesterday and I was very worried and did not have any appointment. Read some online reviews and decided to go to Garner even though it was quite far from my place. I reached there at around 6:30 AM (best thing I did) and there were only 4 other people before me. By 7:45, there was a long queue of about 30+ people. By 8 AM, the office opened and the officer announced that they would take the appointments first and maybe after 11, they would take the walk-ins. However, within 15 mins, they asked the people on the bench (all walk-ins) to get in and I was done in next 30 mins. By 9 AM, I walked out with my driving license renewed. Amazing place, amazing staff. Very efficient, courteous, humble, understanding and professionals. If you are nice and respectful, you would get the same response back from them too. Bottom line, even if it is far from your place, consider going to Garner. Try getting there between 6 and 7 AM. Trust me. It is worth it....... Good luck to you all.....!! The Shotwell Garner branch has the worst, most rudest staff I have ever had to deal with! They are incompetent, slow, and ignorant. If they actually had customer service I could have been done in there in 15 minutes, instead it took close to an hour. Complete idiots! read more

When contracting a state service that is customer based, the contractor's bid MUST include enough examiners to provide excellent customer service. There is no excuse for customers being unable to make appointments to obtain a 1st time license including a road test, nor a lobby full of citizens in need of simple renewals and being turned away. Someone didn't think through this clearly when writing the specs for bids for Driver License Services. Low bid shouldn't always be awarded contract when adequate staff is sorely lacking. read more

I made my appointment back in October for today, 23 Dec 24 because i did not wanted to wait in those long lines. Once I walked in Garner's DMV location it only took less than 30 minutes to get my renewed license. I was treated with respect and courtesy. Left very surprised with their quick service. Appointment is the only way to go. Also this was the closest location to Sanford NC that i could get this Appointment. Yes I got good service today. But no one should have to drive 1 1/2 hours to get a drivers license. NC has to fix this big problem they have in their hands. No more excuses, our tax dollars are paying for results not excuses. I had made several attempts to get my license renewed but was unable to do so due to under staffing. I went to Garner this week knowing it would take most of the afternoon and while I was there, I listened to the very patient staff answer the same questions over and over as they politely turned late comers away. My examiner was incredibly pleasant and efficient when it was finally my turn. These people are amazing to work under pressure and continue to be calm and friendly while doing so. Only because 0 is not an option. Blame the customer in speeches to waiting taxpayers. You had ample warning to make an appointment. Problem , as of Oct 10th there are no appointments until January 20, 2024. If you expire you must go in person. In Cary they say the lack appointments is a legislative issue based on staffing. I'm am a peaceful person who had time. I entered at 10:30 and left at 2pm. This chaos could lead to a dangerous climate. They need to fix this shit show. read more

Don't waste your time. I was told last week they wouldn't let any walk ins in until 12. This week I come back right at 12 and they say they aren't accepting any walk ins even though the website says they only take walk ins 12-5. Said we should try other locations. I would love to recommend a better dmv but I've been driving from location to location for hours and they're all just as bad. NC needs to find an answer since appointments are always 3-4 months out but walking in really isn't an option without using days of your time to maybe be lucky and get seen. At 12:30pm they are telling people to wait outside in the heat when the waiting room 4 people there with 40 empty seats. They don't even have a sign in list to know who is next. They claim is NCDMV policy but cant show it. Not to be forgotten the lady at the front desk is rude and probably should find a different job. This place needs better leadership. read more

WRAL is right, the Garner DMV is the best. I had my driver's license renewed in just 35 minutes as a walk in even though the receptionist warned people they were short staffed that day. The facility is clean and visually pleasant. They quickly check people in and quickly get their paperwork done when they are called up in line. Very organized and helpful staff. Contin was awesome- arrived 5-10 min early for my appointment (which I'd recommend making) and was out in less than 20 min with my real ID. I just came back from a two year tour in Korea and I had to register my vehicle from Texas to North Carolina. Unfortunately the lady was not only rude (she had the worst attitude). She didn't know what she was talking about. When I showed her what the website stated that I required she said well I'm not a website I'm telling you this, once again in a rude manner. i went in at 3:30pm with my daughter to get her license and when they handed me a ticket they informed me that if they don't call her number by 4:30pm then she would have to come back the next day. well by 4pm (30 mins later) they called her and she was done within a few mins. also before we walked out i asked a question and they were able to help me out too right away. so this DMV is the best one i've ever been to and i've lived all over the country and throughout NC. read more

Went there to renew my driver license during the busy summer months. All the DMV license offices I've been to in the Raleigh area have atrocious wait times, and this one, while less busy than Avent Ferry or Cary, was still bad. Waited 3 hours in the afternoon and managed to get to the counter before they closed. I had a work visa which was renewed, but for some reason this DMV could not renew my license, so wasted 3-4 hours of my time. A week later, I had to go to the Cary DMV (waiting another 3-4 hours in the morning), and they renewed my license without any problems. Garner DMV has made obtaining a RealID very difficult for 2 new NC adult residents attending NC State who have been U.S. citizens for 18+ years. Slightly expired (1 month) passports are not evidence of U.S. Citizenship? Only in NC is this a problem ..... this is proof of citizenship whether or not it is recently expired. And a CERTIFIED US Birth Certificate (Foreign Birth) that was issued at time of adoption 18 years ago is NOT acceptable as a true birth certificate. A copy of certificate of citizenship (orig. located in another state, but issued 18 years ago, but did not want to trust US mail for delivery here) wasn't enough either. Jumping through hoops in Garner NC to get a RealID has been challenging. I have never before had issues elsewhere for this type of request, and will not recommend this office. No willingness to be helpful in any way, and I was the one in the wrong. 2 visits and a boatload of wasted waiting time and frustration for 3 people. Good luck to all of you who have situations similar to ours. I truly hope you are successful and have everything they require per the online lists! This could be the slowest DMV that I have ever gone too........ And that includes California DMV's, with lines that reach around the building. I arrived at 8:30, and waited well over three hours to get called. We had done our research online, ensured that we had all of our documents ready, but couldn't anticipate just how long it would take with only one or two tellers. I watched as the room emptied twice before we were finally called. When we approached one of the employees about the wait time, her response was that "We will be called by 5pm". Really? Never again. Excellent customer service! Arrived with my son as a walk-in for an ID. Service was much faster than expected. I hate I did not catch the DMV clerk's name however, she was very patient and polite! She even went a step above to provide us with the proper information needed when we come back for his permit. read more

They are clearly understaffed for the volume of people they handle; Which means the employees are overworked and under compensated. They have an inefficient setup and the work flow needs to be restructured. Consumers are not educated on using online services as this will decrease the amount of people streaming to that location. read more

When we arrived Mrs Jefferys greeted my son and I. She was very polite and very helpful, we were missing our insurance information and Mrs Jeffreys was patient and guided me on what I needed to do to get my policy. Soon after our number was called and Mrs Hall was also very helpful and patient. She took my son to get his driving test and was really good with him. We were in and out in less than an hour. I will definitely be going back to that location. I highly recommend them. read more

This is truly a tough one to write... We all know DMV is tough. Get a cup of coffee and just settle in for the wait. I totally expect that. What I didn't expect was the way our DMV rep treated my daughter. She was a bully. I witnessed it, first hand, the way she asked questions and either degraded her or mocked her responses. Apparently the Road Test was even worse, where I was not present. My daughter is not a whiner,nor spoiled. She is polite and well mannered. This woman was rude, told her she "best be listenin' to me" and "Can't you listen to directions?" "You do what I tell you when I tell you." My kid was trapped, in a car, with a grown woman pushing her around, because she could. She said she had never met someone so hostile before and didn't know what triggered her. Sadly, I googled her name and Division and found more negative reviews about same person. Its worth going to the back of the line or reporting her. I will be. This DMV is the worst! No one at the information desk we waited for 20 minutes no one ever appeared when we tried to ask somebody they just kind of shooed us away. No one was at the computers (I assume they are they are for test taking) but an elderly lady with the badge came out and made another elderly lady who was waiting move from the chair even though no one was taking any tests. She made this lady stand as there were no other chairs available absolutely unbelievable. Instead of making people move from unused chairs perhaps they could've helped the people standing in line, what a crazy thought! read more
