The Gastonia Driver's License Office on West Franklin is one of the most unprofessional and unprepared state offices I've ever dealt with. They often don't have all the necessary forms or requirements available, and even when they do, they'll tell you the system is down--over and over again. It feels like they're doing everything but their job. If the staff there truly don't want to help people or provide basic services, they should seriously consider finding another line of work. This is a government office representing the state of North Carolina, yet the customer service is beyond poor. Honestly, the state should require all employees at this location to take a mandatory customer service training course. People come here needing help with important, time-sensitive matters--treat them with respect and do the job you're paid to do. Completely unacceptable. read more

If they have no concern for their employees, why would they have for customers? The staff is been penalized for reporting a broken fridge in which at the end of shift was told to remove items from fridge, and they would have to pool their monies together if they want a new one. I waited 6 hours to change my name after getting married and I had my original marriage certificate from out of state and they would not accept it. Multiple co workers huddled around and started blaming me and laughing at me for this mistake. AFTER 6 HOURS! On top of that, they would not let a mother and son even sit in the AC after waiting outside in the 88 degree heat because they were going to "take up a chair". Something needs to be done because it was the worst experience I have had at any DMV or even store. I'm disgusted by the treatment I received at this DMV location, specifically from an employee named Laura Cameron. After waiting in line for hours, I came back fully prepared after realizing I was missing one document earlier. My mother had an appointment and offered me her place. Instead of showing even a shred of professionalism, Laura decided to escalate the situation into a full-blown scene. She refused service, raised her voice, and called the police to have us trespassed (for calmly trying to resolve a simple issue). There was no disruption. No disrespect. Just a DMV employee who clearly let her ego, attitude, and bias get the better of her. DMV employees are public servants, not rulers of some broken kingdom. Laura, you don't run anything. You sit behind a desk, and yet act like you're guarding national secrets. You are not powerful, you're petty. And worst of all, you weaponize your position to mistreat people who expect basic respect. If speaking to people with decency is too much for you, get a job where you don't deal with people because you clearly lack the basic people skills to interact with others. You're just miserable, and it shows in how you treat people. You're not feared, you're pitied. If you think this kind of behavior earns you respect, think again. You've only proven that some people should never be allowed in positions of public service. I urge DMV leadership to take this seriously. No one should have to deal with someone like Laura while trying to access essential services. read more

I was yelled at by one of the men who work here before I could even get in the line! I walked up to the line and was trying to read the sign to see what I needed to, any special instructions, and before I knew it the man who works here yelled at me to get to the back of the line. I wasnt cutting, all I wanted to do was read the LARGE 3ft by 3ft sign that had instructions clearly posted and placed out there for people to read! Before I could even read the first word a rude employee turned from the conversation he was having with another customer and loudly and aggressively yelled at me to get to the back of the line! I decided I would just leave. If this is the way you treat people, especially women, I would rather not wait in the line that literally wrapped all the way around the back of the building 100 or more people deep! If the man outside could be this rude and aggressive I couldn't imagine it would be any better inside. I drove to a different one today and everyone I spoke with was amazing, respectful and kind. I also waited a little over an hour inside in air conditioning not outside in 90* weather in the hot blazing sun with no where to sit! I get no one wants to go to the DMV including the people getting paid to be there but that doesn't mean you need to yell at people. read more

After reading all the reviews, I was pretty anxious about going to the DMV. I had made an appt for Sept but canceled after seeing so many people say that they were made to wait outside in the heat. I rescheduled for 730am Nov 1st and it was freezing outside, but I had a very good experience overall. A couple tips I wanted to share that I haven't yet seen on the reviews. If you have an appointment, go inside right away and check in with the desk so you can get a number. I arrived at 7:15 and was told by one employee to simply have a seat and I'd be called at my appt time. My appt time came and went and over a dozen walkins were brought in during that time. At 7:35, I checked in at the desk and was told that I should've done that already as soon as I arrived. My paperwork was verified and I was given a ticket. I received a text with my ticket number as well. I was prepared to wait forever since I hadn't checked in immediately. Thankfully, my number was called almost immediately at 7:40. The clerk was very pleasant and friendly. I was out by 8 with my new drivers license, less than an hour after arrival. I can't stress this enough, but it really pays to be friendly and polite. I smiled at everyone and they were all courteous in return. If you don't speak English, please make sure you know what you need because the employees only speak English and had a tough time understanding those who did not. A translator will not be provided. My last warning: the employees were extremely communicative and gave updates every few minutes. They told us all that the kids were out of school today so many of them wanted to take their road test and the wait would be 3-5 hours. You must make an appointment if you don't want to wait forever. They also told us that if we got tired or cranky that we should just leave. Parents were also asked to wait in their cars and not inside with their teen in order to allow more chairs for other patrons. I moved from out of state and already had a RealID so I brought my SS card, drivers license, water bill, electric bill, and car insurance verification. These were all required and worked out for me. I took the vision test and there were 20 road signs on the test that I had to read out. The first 16 are normal signs but the last 4 are completely blank and you just have to recognize the shape, which is really confusing. Some are obvious like a stop sign, but I didn't recognize the shape of a "no passing zone" sign. It was the only one I missed so not a big deal but just a heads up. Study the signs while you're waiting. They have printouts at the front desk. I'll add more tips if I think of them. I was prepared to wait for hours even with an appointment and I was pleasantly surprised. read more

The NCDMV driver's license renewal process is a masterpiece of inefficiency. Online appointments are available, sure--but the first open slot is in August. If your license is expiring or you need a name change, your only hope is the "walk-in" option. But here's the kicker: walk-ins start after 12 PM, and you have to scan a barcode at the office to join the queue. Think showing up at 4 AM will help you beat the system? Dream on. You'll still lose an entire day and possibly your sanity. The head of the DMV? Always a political appointee--someone's buddy, not someone who knows how to run an operation. If this person worked at Chick-fil-A, they'd be fired before the lunch rush. All I'm asking is for the NC Governor to take a field trip to any DMV office. Stand in line, feel the frustration, and experience firsthand what North Carolinians endure just to renew a driver's license. For those of you who are in the Western part of North Carolina, I can recount our recent experience at the Marshall and Burnsville DMV offices. My son needed to take the road test in order to get his driver's license. As everyone who has been dealing with DMV lately has discovered, it's impossible to get an appointment unless you snag one at Midnight-7:00am for 90 days out. So we were prepared to wait in line for most of the day to get a walk in appointment. We arrived at the Marshall DMV office at 6:30 with camp chairs in hand and there were already at least 20 people in line. The problem was, there was a clear start to the line but then as the line got longer, there were fewer places to stand/sit so people were sort of 'zig zagged' around the parking area. When the very nice DMV worker opened the doors at 8:00, it was evident that there was no order to who was going to get the first 25 tickets for walk-ins. It seems to me, that there would be a very fair way to determine who was waiting first, second etc... by having numbered spots on the sidewalk to sit/stand on so it is very clear. Certainly someone could come up with some sort of fair system. Anyways, after waiting for 1 1/2 hours, we discovered that Marshall DMV does not do road tests. We weren't the only ones in line that were needing a road test so clearly the DMV website needs to do a better job plus we couldn't talk to anyone when we attempted to call the office several times. Again, there was only 1 person manning the whole office which seems absolutely ridiculous. Whoever is in charge of running the DMV, seriously needs to look at adding staff. The woman in Marshall was very nice and calm but it's unfair that she is expected to deal with this madness all by herself. To continue my story.... So now it's 8:00 and my son is completely distraught and I try several times to call the Burnsville DMV but no answer (of course, because there is only 1 person manning that office!). I drive 40 minutes to Burnsville and we discover that they are no longer taking walk-ins for the day. However, at 1:00 (after the man's lunch break), they do take walks ins for the road test. So, I set up my camp chair in front of the DMV building (luckily it was a beautiful day) and sat there for 4 hours. At 1:00, we were the first ones to get our walk in ticket for the afternoon! If you are taking the road test, make sure that you have a physical copy of proof of insurance. My son's name was not on the insurance card so we had to run to the library down the street and print off the insurance Declarations Page that had his name on it. You will also need to bring in the car's registration. At 2:30, it was my son's turn and the DMV man, who was extremely professional and calm and efficient and the only person manning the office, left the DMV with my son to do the road test with him. At 3:00, we walked out with a license! It was an all day affair and there is definitely A LOT that needs to be improved with the DMV system. It's absolutely ridiculous that these offices only have 1 employee. Kudos to both of the ones we met, because they were both extremely professional and seemed extremely calm. They would both get a 5 star rating. On the positive side to this whole experience (besides my son getting his license) is that I met A LOT of very nice people throughout the day. Of course everyone was a bit frustrated by this whole DMV mess but people were kind and civil and friendly. It gives me hope that there is more good in the world than evil. Sorry for the long post, but bottom line, Marshall office does NOT do road tests and if you are going to be a walk in appointment, get there early and bring your lawn chair, book, and snacks! I am new to NC. I registered two vehicles and applied for titles on the same day. I recently married so I needed to provide a marriage certificate in order to add my wife to the title, which I provided. I received only one title in the mail thinking the other would come eventually. After another month went by, I visited my local title office where I began the process. I was told the second vehicle title was on hold because they needed a copy of the marriage certificate, which I provided during my original visit. It was obviously seen by DMV in Raleigh because they sent me the first vehicle title. I will leave it to the reader to decide where the problem lies. I usually don't write reviews but Cary's DMV deserved one! I literally dread going to DMV's because the walk-in appt line is always wrapped around the building! I loved the way Cary's system works, they take walk-ins at 12 but since I knew what number to text to get in line I didn't have to drive there and wait forever. As soon as you're checked in and texted a ticket number, they also text you a link to let you where you are in line or how many people are in front of you so because of that I was able to chill at home and run errands. I headed to the dmv when there were about 20 people in front of me. Once I arrived & it dropped down to about 15 people, they texted me to come in and sit in the lobby and from there I waited until I was called to the station. I didn't have to wait there all day and was able to get my license renewed which seemed impossible until today. The staff was also very professional, informative and nice which made my visit even more pleasant! read more

Its a shame that in a town like Cary, we have one of the worst DMV's. Getting an appointment is almost impossible before 3-4 months. Wait time is terrible, on e wastes whole day trying to get even an ID. The gentleman at the reception makes up his own rules (When I stopped by to ask if there was a time when they allow people who do not have appointments, he said come anytime, we will take you in. When we went, we were told that no appointments start after noon). The facility is the worst in the area. Staff is inadequate. This has been going on for years. One gentleman from the line went to him to ask a question. Arrived, 10:17 Am. Promptly received ticket number, no line outside. Waiting area only maybe half full. So far, great! Unfortunately, that's where it all went downhill. This was our *third* attempt to get my sons license, after waiting for 4 hours in Fuquay and several hours in Fayetteville (only to get told they stop all driving tests at 4pm try again next time). At 12:40 he is finally ready to take his driver portion. At this time, I am literally next door at a little hole-in-the-wall Mexican joint. He lets me know, and by the time I walk out of the restaurant (less than 30 seconds) to give him the keys, the guy administering the test can't be bothered to wait a few seconds for us. Later on, turns out the guy not only couldn't wait but also cancelled his test and wouldn't you guess? Yup, not taking any more driving tests. So now I am out another 5 hours, making for a grand total of at least 13 hours spent trying and failing to get a simple drivers license. Not wanting to wait is fine, but I clearly saw the guy walk past my son sitting ready in the car. When I went to inquire inside I got called a liar by the examiner when I told them we had been there since 10:17, despite I am sure an electronic and paper trail that would prove it easily. Utter lack of any sort of customer-centric attitude. Rude employees. Lack of communication. Understaffed. This was his last chance to get it done before the school cutoff date, meaning it isn't just hours of us waiting but also hours spent(which we can't afford!) shuttling him to school when the understaffed school busses aren't running. Ironically, had I not parked so close to the door I probably would have made it out to the car before him. That is how quickly this guy gave up. I understand you have people waiting, but you are costing yourself and everyone else more time because we have to go through the DMV again, things like this increases the traffic clogging the system. Would be great if I could make an appointment less than 3 months out too. read more

This was a great DMV! I, like so many others, moved to Raleigh and needed to get a NC driver's license. It's impossible to get an appointment anywhere so walk-in it was! I tried 2 other DMVs to no avail so tried this one. It was amazing! I was in and out in an hour, maybe less. Everyone was pleasant and helpful. Why should we Sr. Citizens of NC have too if we can get an appointment that's three months out or campout at an office to renew our DL and the Law is that we have to comply within 60-days? If you're doing a walk in, use the QR code or text "U66 Get in line" to 31289. Make sure you click the right option for what you're there for. That changes when they can squeeze you in between appts. I tried to check in at 11:47 AM and it wasn't open yet. I checked in at 12:05 PM and got my ticket number. The number tells you how many people are on the walk-in waitlist ahead of you. Based on other reviews I saw, if there's more than 50 ahead of you, you probably won't get seen that day. I think that's accurate. There was 50 people ahead of me and I was one of the last 5 people seen before they closed. I heard the staff tell people who tried to check in after 1 PM to just try again the next day b/c they realistically wouldn't be seen. Try to check in as close to 12 PM as possible! I waited in my car from 12-4 PM, called in to the lobby at 4 PM, seen at 4:45 PM, and finished by 4:59 PM. When they're ready for you to wait in the lobby, the front desk checks to make sure you have all your documents before you're seen. The staff were nice, helpful, and very clear with instructions. Just be polite and respectful. It's a DMV. It can be stressful and frustrating for everyone. Kindness goes a long way. I heard them tell some people who didn't have the right documents to come back at 7AM the next day and that same staff member would squeeze them in before their first appt. You can't have food or drinks inside per the sign, but they're lax about it. There is a bathroom inside. There's also a solid MX restaurant next door if you get hungry while you're waiting. read more

Wow, just moved here from out of state. Made an apt., had to wait 6 weeks, go in and I am missing a form of ID. So the guy scheduled me to come back 2 days later. He told me I needed two types of ID which I brought along with insurance, proof of residence etc. I fight traffic today in Huntersville to get there early. I wait in line for 30 minutes to check in. Then the lady tells me I need my passport or marriage certificate. I ask her if she could make me another appointment and she tells me I have to do it online again! Now I have to wait another 6 weeks to get in! This is the craziest system I have ever seen. So you make an appointment "skip the line" as they say, and you still wait. What an archaic system here! Very, very..... VERY slow. I go there at 12:30pm and assumed I would get seen eventually... I waited in my car almost 3 hours until I got a text telling me to come in for my turn- except it wasn't my turn- I now had to wait another 1.5 hours inside. I eventually got my turn at 4:55pm. Everyone behind me (maybe 15 people) were told they were out of luck and had to come back another day. I don't think that is fair. The employees were not particularly rude so that's not my complaint (although one guy who seemed to be the leader told me at 3:30pm that I was warned that I might not get seen that day when I checked in - I was not warned, so that irritated me). But they sorely need to figure out a way to make the place run more efficiently. read more

I needed to get my NC drivers license and had been warned ahead of time to get to this location early because the lines can get quite long. I arrived at 6:40am on a Friday morning and there were already a number of people waiting outside the front door. A few of them had lawn chairs with blankets and had clearly been there for awhile. I was #14 in line. At 7am the Clerk came out and told us that he would take us inside in groups of 10. He took in the first group and about 20ish minutes later came out for my grouping. The temperature was in the 30's and I was glad to finally get inside! The Clerk was pleasant and he did a good job of moving people right along and everything was very organized. I appreciated that they announce all the required documents you must have so you don't waste time standing in line - Passport, SSN card, proof of address, and proof of insurance WITH the expiration date on it. A few people did not have this and had to step out of line to go call their insurance companies and get it faxed over to the DMV. If you have all that, you're set! I got my number and about 20 minutes later I was called up. It took about another 10 minutes and I was on my way and headed out the door. Overall, the staff was very friendly and efficient. I had a positive experience and the entire process took about an hour and a half total from start to finish. read more

I had a 7:30 appointment and was out by 8:00 am. Everyone was super friendly and the door greeter was very upbeat. Whoever you are, thanks for making my day. I went to DMV, to get ID on 4/1/2024, as of 5/16/2024, still do not have. I have called several times, each time there is a different excuse, 1st time , they were short of people, 2nd time, no excuse, 3rd time, the printer was down! I have to have some documents Notarized and they cannot use a paper I.D.Over 6 weeks, is totally unacceptable! All of the excuses are unprofessional! IMO; I feel this was done on purpose, due to the political climate! Voting was held on 5/142024, and if you have a paper ID, it cannot be used! The state of NC, needs to get it together! The question with this DMV is: how long are you willing to wait? You better be prepared to wait for a long time. Compared to other places I've lived, DMV license offices in Raleigh and Cary are by far the slowest I've ever encountered. It boggles my mind how slow they can be. I show up 7:20 AM in the morning (40 minutes before opening), and there were already 30 people in line. By opening time there were another 30 people lined up after me. By the time I actually finished my business there (a simple driver license renewal), it was 10:45 AM, and people are still lined up outside to the corner of the plaza. As mentioned by other reviewers, summer tends to be the busiest time because teens are out of school and trying to get their permits and/or road tests. If you can wait for a few months, it is worthwhile to make an appointment so you can skip the line. It might also be worthwhile to drive further to a less centrally-located office to avoid some of the logjam. Otherwise, the best thing to do is to show up early and have an extra dose of patience. Also, make sure to do your research beforehand and have all the proper documents. Finally, don't show up here for anything related to plates and registration, since those are handled by license plate locations (where you don't have to wait nearly as long). The Cary location is probably one of the busiest in the area, but I'll give them 2 stars because at least they do their job correctly once I get called... this is more than I can say for some of the other locations. read more

This is currently my favorite DMV location. I've been twice so far between 8-10:30 AM and have been in and out in within 30-45 minutes without an appointment. I came because I needed to change my name, the first time was to renew my license and get the REAL ID. Make sure you bring the proper documentation and you will have no issues (this can be found online and make sure you bring printed copies, showing it on your phone will not be enough but you can print it there). All of the staff members that I have dealt with were nice. read more
