Larry's Small Engine Repair Service - My Shop upon Completion

Larry's Small Engine Repair Service

(1 review)

We can't bear it anymore. We must tell our painful experience with this repair shop…read more (1) Background About 1.5 month ago, our gas lawn mower went down that couldn't started. I purchased this new mower at Home Deport only less than 2 years back. I thoroughly searched online for possible problems, found the most probably culprit is carburetor. I bought a new carburetor for $30 but found unable to replace the old carburetor myself with the new one. My wife and I went to "Larry's Small Engine Repair Service" ask Larry for help, taking a new carburetor with us. (2) Very bad repair quality He fixed the mower by using the new carburetor I provided. However, it broke down again two days ago, 7/3/2019. I couldn't start it ounce again! He gave the repaired mower to us 5/15/2019. We, old husband & wife above 70, have only a small house with a small yard. I only used the mower several times. (3) Unreasonable pricing He charged us for $140. Plus the new carburetor I had already paid out $30, we spent totally $170 to repair the mower and use it for only 1.5 month. --The brand new mower costed me only $230. (4) Extremely bad attitude - "Why do you charge me $140? I told you I don't want the repair fee be above $130", I asked Larry. - He answered: " I purchase another new device at nearby Briggs & Stratton part store yesterday ". - " O.K. Show me the invoice of Briggs & Stratton then. You bought it yesterday". Suddenly, he became furious and yelled to us, "You guys go, go away! I don't want your money. " We were very terrified and froze there. He kept yelling and pull the mower all the way from his garage to our car. To pacify him and avoid possible violence, I promised not ask to see the invoice and paid the repair fee $140 in full immediately. We left him as soon as we could. But we've been keeping the receipt of the $140 repair fee carefully in file, as an evidence. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Collateral Evidence (Somebody else already gave him the lowest rating): https://www.bbb.org/us/tx/houston/profile/small-engine-repair/larrys-small-engine-repair-service-llc-0915-90051461/customer-reviews darren g 01/28/2019 Larry is very rude on phone and complains about doing the work should retire he's very temperamental and unprofessional don't go there he's full of excuses! Anyone else you go to would be way better than this man he's a awful person to deal with, talks over you and has nasty attitude and tone in his voice!

From the owner: I provide quality and affordable service on small engines, 2 & 4-cycle engines, lawn mowers,…read moreportable generators, chain saws, blowers, and quality trimmers. I do not work on cheap durable or non-durable consumer products; in most cases it is be cheaper to buy a new one. Please visit my website for more info. I take work by appointment only because I operate my business based on the simple premise that it is better to turn business away rather than take in more than I can do in a reasonable amount of time; this is a seasonal business, and it can be over whelming at times. I work on some after-market brands of equipment that my competition will not work on. I prefer a call in advance to determine, if your issue is something that I can do, and/or cost effective to repair only after an evaluation. If you have attempted to repair it, then I will charge accordingly because it creates more work for me. I do charge a deposit up front to cover my time to evaluate & cost of intial parts, and the deposit is applied towards the final bill. I am insured, but I will not perform any service that would create a liability for me to save you money. I operate a transparent business based on honesty and integrity; you cannot please everyone, regardless of what you say or do. I will give you my honest opinion upfront, and you make the decision whether to proceed or not. I am in the service business not in the business of selling services.

I brought my lawnmower to this shop on a suggestion from a neighbor. I usually don't get things…read morelike lawn equipment repaired because it's not worth it; it probably ends up being better to just buy a new one when it's broken. But I brought my mower here on my neighbor's suggestion. When I got there, I saw a ton of used lawnmowers sitting in the parking lot. I went to the open bay and found someone to talk to about repairing my mower. When I dropped off my lawnmower, I was told they would call me to inform of the problem and the cost to repair. If I did not approve the repair, I would just need to pay $20 for the diagnostic charge and to get my mower back; if I had them repair it, I would not be charged the diagnostic fee. I felt that was a fair deal. I dropped the mower off on a Wednesday and was told I would receive a phone call no later than Saturday (3 days later), possibly even on Friday if I was lucky, to get approval for any repairs. On Saturday, I didn't receive a call so I figured I was unlucky. So I called the following Monday to the number on the business card. No one answered and I got a message that I couldn't leave a voice message because the mailbox was full. I called several times that Monday in hopes I could get an answer or leave a message. No luck; same result. I called again Tuesday with the same results. One week after I dropped off my lawnmower, I sent my husband to find out what was going on; he was told that they had closed to go on vacation. That's fine if they would have found a way to convey that information to the public. My husband also found out that they had not even looked at the mower and couldn't say what was wrong with it. Again, understandable if that information would have been mentioned earlier or someone would have called to inform of that situation. They again said that they would call once they figured out the problem to get approval on the repair. Spoiler alert - no one ever called us to get approval for the repair. A few days later, I called again and someone answered. I was told that a part was being ordered but no one could tell me what needed to be repaired and how much it would cost. So at this point, my lawnmower was a hostage at this place. 3 weeks after dropping off the mower, the repair was finished. I still never got a phone call; I was going there to somehow get my mower back. When I got there, I was told the mower was repaired. I was informed that the repairs cost almost $200. I almost threw up in my mouth. If I would've known that information, I gladly paid the $20 and gotten my mower back. They told me it was fixed but it wouldn't start until the 3rd pull. I so shocked about the cost that I just paid the money and left the place with my mower. Having some time to reflect afterwards, I probably should have just left it there and bought a new one. I imagine that that's what this place wanted so they could sell my mower once I refused to pay based on the number of mowers outside the place. Also, the lady taking payments told me that if I paid cash, I would not need to pay any sales tax. If I used any other method of payment, I would need to pay the tax. Since I had the cash, I paid cash. I imagine that repair was not reported for tax purposes. Bottom line - don't go here. This operation is poorly run and puts no effort into customer service. If they are doing a repair for you, expect they to hold your lawn equipment hostage - so be willing to walk away from your repaired item. But if you do walk away, it won't break their hearts because they will make money from you or a subsequent sale. They do have some new lawn equipment for sale there. I can't speak to the items sold there, only to the repair operation. If you're reading this and still choose to repair your item there, then you've been warned and have assumed the risk of what I experienced. Caveat emptor. I gave a 1 star only because I couldn't give less.
