I came DK Hair Salon for the first time for a hair cut on 10/21 with Lexi. She was recommended by a friend who's hair cut Ive always admired. I finally asked her who cuts her hair and I'm glad I did. First, I have to say DK Salon had a nice covid check-in process. They temperature checked me and sanitized my hands. I felt very safe that they were doing everything they could to keep the salon germ free. But the real reason I'm writing a review is because I had the best hair cut EVER by Lexi. I have weird thin wavy dense hair and she nailed it with the way she cut it and styled it. My hair lays and moves so nicely. She listened to what I wanted and saw my vision. And I'm just so happy with my cut. Lexi is also very efficient with the time it took to wash, dry, cut and style my hair. I left feeling like a new person. I'm so pleased. She clearly knows what she's doing. I've tried so many stylists and haven't found anyone with her knowledge about cutting hair. If you're looking for a new stylist that really knows how to really cut hair, run don't walk to see Lexi!! And besides being a very professional stylist, she's also a very pleasant person. read more

Just finished a spin class and was dropping off drycleaning. Notice the salon across the street and wanted to check it out and make an appointment. Stood in the doorway for several minutes and a guy walked out, looked at me and walked away mumbling "not for me." I asked if there was anyone manning the front, but he just walked away. Another man walked up to me and I said I would like to make an appointment. The look on his face was VERY unwelcoming! He said he is "one of the owners but booked for months." I suddenly felt awkward and uncomfortable by his approach. I live in the area, and my current stylist in Del Mar is on maternity leave. I thought this might be a nice, upscale place to try. Sir, I can get a $200 style/cut anywhere, but will never even consider this place from the rude treatment. I had highlights put in my hair a few weeks ago by Lexi. While it took several weeks from the time I contacted the salon before I could be seen, she did an excellent job. However, I have now sent four texts, two emails and called the shop a number of times to set another appointment - NO RESPONSE. No answer to my texts, no answer to my emails, and no one answers the phone. If you want customer service, this is not the place to go. Apparently, they have so much business they do not need any more. Shame. read more

I am updating my review to reflect that Ken is not the name of the stylist. His name is Juan (he never gave me his name). Juan told me that he owned the salon but apparently he does not. He called me today after I wrote the review and said he is with Plush Salon (and that is the salon I called to set the appointment initially, however, Juan texted me and told me to go to dk hair). Interesting to note that when Juan called me today, he never apologized for his behavior. I am not surprised. That said, Ken (who IS the owner of dk hair) left a response to my review saying he did not know me. REVIEW I went into dk hair and Juan was my stylist. Before I made an appointment I asked for someone who could cut a stacked bob. He set a time for me to come in. After he was done, my hair was not blended and was cut too short too far up in the back. I went back in to have it fixed and he actually started yelling and arguing with me saying that the models have more hair and he had to deal with my fine hair. He yelled and said "You should have come in fully prepared." He said, "Let's get this done so I can start my day." He seemed to have an anger problem. I could not help wondering if that was what made a great stylist - cutting your hair in a style that makes you look like you have more hair than you really do!! He fixed it somewhat but had to cut it way shorter than I wanted it. And it is NOT what I wanted. Then later when I went to the Yelp website and looked at the gallery, and even on his website, there are no pictures of bob haircuts. Also, before I went, I looked at reviews for Plush Salon because that is who I called. Juan has a number with a 312 area code and that is the number that was listed at Plush Salon. However, he texted me to go to dk hair. When I asked him if he had two locations, he said I was confused. But Plush Salon has his number to call. I've been getting my hair colored by Lisa for awhile now and always so satisfied with my hair. She is so patient and listens to exactly what you want. I would recommend her to anyone and my hair always comes out feeling and looking nothing short of amazing. This past week, I tried out a different salon for a cut and my hair was completely butchered. I tried to style it every which way to see if it'll work but it was awful and there was a huge chunk missing out of my right side and it was not even close to being even. Three words for you, dear Yelper: Traffic. Cone. Orange. I went to dk because they were looking for hair models for their upcoming season. I'm thinking "Great! I'm a 'do whatever you want to it' kind of gal. I'll let them do my hair for free." I went in one morning for my "model consultation." The project seemed completely unorganized when they explained that they would actually be COLORING my hair that day. Well, I explained that I had just dyed it the week before because I was told this was only a "consultation" for a future appointment. They seemed to think this would be okay, then told me they wanted to dye my blonde locks '3 shades of red.' "No problem, I said, "I've had red hair before." Next ensued the longest 3 hours I've ever spent in a salon. I came out of the shampoo bowl with Carrot Top ORANGE hair, streaked with highlighter yellow. It was horrific (I would post a picture if I could). I politely asked them to fix it, and the stylist had to convince the pissed off colorist that they should, in fact, tone it to a different hue. I left the salon almost in tears thinking 'Okay, you get what you pay for and that is the last time I'm letting someone color my hair for free!' The next morning I came out of the shower and I swear the orange was even worse. My head glowed! I immediately called the salon, and the receptionist was so sweet...until he put the colorist on the phone. She curtly told me, "Well if we take all the 'red' tones out of your hair, you can't be a hair model for us." Um, going out in PUBLIC was my main concern. Being your hair model?! I could care less at this point! So I went back in immediately, and even apologized that it must have been MY misunderstanding of the word 'red' when she was really thinking god-knows-what shade... No one ever apologized to me for completely f-ing up my color, and they made me feel completely ungrateful that I was being high maintenance since I didn't pay for their services. The whole thing lasted 6 hours over 2 days, and the worst part was, they would have sent me out the door with that awful Manic Panic hair on Day One if I hadn't had the balls to pipe up! Shame on you, dk. You should treat everyone who walks through your doors as a walking advertisement for your salon. Because guess what...we are. read more

CURLY HAIR! ok, now that i have your attention, allow me to begin! I have tried so many different stylists who claim to specialize in curly hair and i have learned a few things. 1. some of them LIE! 2. deva is not the end all, be all of hair cutting for curly people. Ken cut my hair and did a wonderful job! He understands about the dreaded curly mullet and talked with me about his process and why he cut my hair the way he did. He also styled it phenomenally which never happens! that's right! no leaving here with wet hair only to go home and see the mess of dry uneven, shelf hair. ah!!!! (true story). I've been going to this salon for... close to two years. I had a girl who I really liked, she left, and then they set me up with a new girl, Carrie (if you know where she went, please let me know!), who I also really liked. Here's my problem. Your hairdressers keep leaving. If I just let you set me up with a new one, I'd be on #3 in less than 2 years. When I ask where she went, you refuses to tell me. Instead, you have your receptionist give me some sketchy excuses about why you can't tell me where they went. Either improve your employee relations or your class. If you're that worried about losing business because your rockstar hairstylists leave, then keep them around. If they do leave, do the classy, "I'm a decent business" thing and tell their clients who get hair cuts every couple of months (IE they aren't calling every week to see if their stylist is still employed) where they went. I realize you don't HAVE to tell me, in fact I'm fully aware that my name and information in your computer system is your property. However, there are businesses that have class and businesses that don't. I'd rather give my money to an establishment that isn't so rude. read more

I've been searching for a hair stylist in San Diego for a while now. Many places I've been to have been awful...but DK hair was not that bad... The person who cut my hair was Lexi and she was really nice and sweet. But honestly, I'm not completely sure if I'd go back and here's why: On one hand the cut was $45 which is a decent price and I thought it was reasonable. When she was done with my hair, I liked it and thought it was an okay job. In my experience cutting short hair is difficult and not everyone does a good job. I was ready to give it a rave review....but then the next day happened and I realized that the cut she gave me was a little difficult to style because running a flat iron through short hair is not easy. So I've been unsuccessfully trying to make my hair look even remotely as good as it did the day I left. So that's why I think the place is A-OK...it wasn't bad and honestly Lexi was awesome and I would recommend her as a person etc, I just can't say for sure if I'd go back. Okay I have to give some serious LUV to DK Hair. I've been going to David (dah-VEED) for about five years now. I will admit that I've strayed a couple of times, always to run back to him and beg him to fix it. He always seemed amused and not at all offended. My hair is naturally curly/wavy, and he is honestly the only one who knows how to cut it and make it look fabulous. A year ago I had the Yuko straightening thing done to my hair at a different salon, just for the sake of trying something new. At one point I tried to schedule an appointment with David for a trim, but alas he was too booked and popular that I couldn't get in within the time frame that I needed. So I went somewhere else, and while I got a couple of decent haircuts from a North Park salon, they were nothing compared to the one's I got from David. Now that I'm back to curly hair, I'm completely committed to David. The amazing thing is that when I used to wear my hair straight (via my Chi flat-iron) he gave me the most incredible cuts. You know, the kind where you have a good hair day basically EVERY DAY. And now with my curly hair, he delivers equally amazing hair. If your hair is even slightly wavy/curly or just generally stubborn, you know know how hard it is to find someone in SD who can finesse it into something beautiful. I should mention that they have a new location just a few doors down from their old place. It's bigger, with specific areas for cutting, coloring, and they even have an esthetician there, so it's a one-stop salon. I plan to get a brow wax, cut, and color the next time I go in. There are other salons that have lots of reivews here that I think are overrated. They try to force a cut on your hair (that they think is edgy) that your hair doesn't want, and you have to beat it into submission with various tools and styling products to get it right. Not at DK Hair. The people at DK Hair are ridiculously down-to-earth with not even a hint of pretense. I never feel like I'm not cool or hip enough when I go in, no matter what I've thrown on that day. Every time I walk out I feel like a rockin MILF. read more

I had come in for a class demonstration with the world-renowned L'Oreal stylist: David K. This review will primarily focus on the salon itself and the staff, but will also include my experience with David K as a hair model. Being a hair model for a stylist to practice and learn is a great way to save money on hair cuts and other treatments! David was really good at remembering all the models' names but mixed up my "hair history" a bit when introducing me to the class - not a big deal. Kristen seemed to be the coordinator of the event making sure that the models were ready for their demonstration. My prep stylist was Katie - friendly, talkative, and we discussed our shared love of water sports! It was pretty awesome. She blew dry my hair and straightened it (prepping for a dry haircut) - both of which were tedious tasks and were done in a total of 2 hours. As having been a hair model for a "class" once before, I wasn't expecting the entire salon's group of stylists to be watching as David K cut my hair. It was a little uncomfortable at first, but then I realized they were only focused on David, and my hair. Not to mention, I spent 98% of the time with my hair in my face. The cut itself was quite simple and quick, but took longer as David had to explain his techniques with a few stories here and there. I was glad to be the first model as the other models had to arrive just as early as I had, but had to stay throughout the other demos. The end result of my cut was simple and pleasing enough that I left with no complaints, not to mention they gave a free goodie bag with $50 worth of L'Oreal products for each model! Overall, the experience at DK was pleasant though I've had better experiences at other salons. As they're located in Hillcrest, parking was inconvenient but I found a free 2-hour parking zone about 4 blocks away - not too bad. I was thankful to come back to my car without a ticket! My cut was satisfactory, although I was hoping for something a little more exciting. I think my consultation with David had probably led him to think I would be a little conservative with my look, but you gotta love having fresh-cut ends! read more

I have crazy curly awesome hair - but until I went to David at DK 5 years ago, I had no idea how terrible my haircuts had been! I went in and told him to just do what he thoought would make it look the best and boy did he ever! He straight up went Edward Scissorhands on that ass! I had never had a dry cut before and he explained that each curl has it's own personality and that by cutting it dry (and whittling it to give it a light whispy look at the ends of my curls), he was able to give it a better shape instead of trying to cut it like he would cut straight hair. Unfortunately I moved to Japan and then to VA - But EVERY time I am back in SD, DK is usually the FIRST stop I make (after In and Out) and he remembers me and picks up just like I was just there 3 months ago, giving me a FABULOUS cut (and most recently he had his colorist give me some wild tri-color red/orange/burgundy highlights - which rocked my world!) My 20 year high school reunion is next month, so I wanted to go in for an update. It had been seven months since I'd last been in, so I needed it!! I have to say, even though it had been that long, my hair still looked great. I was thinking of growing my hair out, but I decided that I'd have Ken cut a good 3-4" off because I think it's going to be a hot summer! I left feeling stylish, renewed, and 10 years younger (since the grays are now gone). As always, Ken did a fabulous job on my cut. If you've had the same look for years and are nervous to change...go see Ken. He knows exactly what works for your face frame, and type of hair you have. Whether it's curly, thin, thick, frizzy...he can create something that will be easy to manage and make you feel like you belong on the cover of InStyle. He's also going to give you what you want...if you have long hair and want to keep it long, you wont walk out wondering what happened to half of your hair. I've been going to Ken for over a decade now, and I've had it long, then short, then long, then short, and short again...and I'll probably grow it out a bit next. Larry did an excellent job on my color too...once again! I found out that the source of some of the negative reviews on this site (Nick) is now gone from the salon. So only the cream of the crop remains, keeping the integrity of the salon and the energy in it completely positive. So what are you waiting for? If you're looking for a hip, professional, and friendly salon that you can count on to make you feel fabulous every time you walk out the door, look no more. The extra money you pay is well worth it; after all, you pay for what you get. And you're worth it!! I don't normally review anything outside of restaurants or cuisine, but I felt a need to express pleasure in the service and quality cut I've been receiving from Ray at DK Hair for over two years now. I've been to a few hair salons around town. Some good, some bad and yes, even a few were the ugly. I won't go into a rant about what other salons in San Diego, some of them very well-known, lack or suffer from, but I will tell you what makes DK Hair shine. Upon entering DK Hair you're always greeted by a smile, a cup of refreshing water, tea or fresh coffee. Having to wait to see your stylist is very rare and if you do wait, it's very short. The staff is very friendly and while I've only ever had in-depth chats with Ray, I've come to recognize the positive and professional attitudes, smiling faces and so on. April was a stellar receptionist (and very tall, model status). Sadly, she is no longer there. Brenda, the semi-new Esthetician is very approachable and professional, Ken is very enthusiastic about his work, and of course, Ray is fantastic and very friendly. He's a very talented stylist and can always count on him to rock. I often seek his input on what we should do with this head of mine, and I've come to trust his judgement. DK Hair is a very clean and stylish salon. I love the decor, great music, artwork, easel-inspired mirrors and even the shampoo area is very neat, relaxing and zen-like. While not a demanding or discriminating person, I admit that I'm reasonably picky and always seek out those things that stand out, are attainable and life-changing. DK Hair definitely stands out, is found in the neighborhood, invites you with open arms and yes, can even change the way you feel about yourself and your look. I will continue to see Ray at DK Hair for as long as I can. My only regret is that if one moves to another city, getting to see Ray at DK Hair isn't so easy, but becomes one of those things that makes you want to live in San Diego again. read more

I had such a blast getting my hair done at DK! They use Bumble and Bumble products and I was very excited to check them out. I work for a Sephora and we recently started carrying B&B. I went in just wanting something new and told them to do whatever they wanted.... they cut 8 inches off my curls and I have to say this is the first time I have had shorter hair and didn't feel like a soccer mom. David cut my curly hair and I do believe it's the best cut I have ever had, he used a razor, which I was kind of scared about but it looks so amazing! Watching him cut my hair was like watching an artist paint... he would choose a curl and twist it and use the razor to trim it down. He is a genius! I had my hair colored by Marissa and she was just as fantastic, she did the bayalage technique, which I was very excited for. Since I just said give me something new I was game but I have seen some bayalage done very poorly, but not hers! It looks so natural, light fade. The most amazing haircut I have ever had in my entire life!!!!! I have curly, thick and frizzy hair so its pretty difficult to style. I have always wanted to go shorter, but have been terrified that I would look like a poodle so I kept it long for years. One day I decided I was going to make a change, I read the Yelp reviews and decided to call and make an apt. Kristen, the receptionist was the sweetest and asked me questions about my hair type etc to make sure the stylist was pre-informed before the consultation. I asked for David's availablity and she said he had a cancellation that same day, so I took it! As soon as I arrived, I felt so pampered and as if I was at a day spa. David's assistant T greeted me and brought me water and asked if there was anything I needed. As soon as I sat in David's chair I felt so at ease and knew this haircut was going to be fab. David asked what how I usually wear my hair and other questions to help him determine what cut he was going to do. I showed him a picture and told him to do whatever he thought would look best. He cut my hair dry, which I had never had before, and I was so glad he did! He explained that curly hair looks much different in it's natural state as opposed to when its wet. We chatted about traveling and what I was studying in school. I felt so comfortable and as if I was talking to a old friend. As soon as he finished blow drying my hair, I was completely in love with what I saw in the mirror. It went above and beyond anything I could have asked for. When you walk into the shop, the decor is really nice, the staff is super friendly and a complimentary mimosa isn't too bad either! Nicole is by far the best hair stylist I've ever had! I have short hair and she knows exactly what I want every time I come in. She's been in the biz for years and is very knowledgeable in different styles of cutting and gets that perfect, textured, edgy look to my hair. She is also talented at styling as if she's sculpting her masterpiece and at the end of my appointment I walk outta there looking good! I also have bleached blonde hair and Valerie is definitely the best colorist I've ever had! A year ago I decided to grow out my pixie into a bob for the zillionth time. The only reason I was finally successful in doing so was because of Ian. His philosophy about growing out your hair is that it should always look finished, as if you wanted it to look like that. He is very honest about what would be the most flattering. I get tons of compliments on my hair now. Thanks, Ian! I am soooo picky about my eyebrows. After several botched waxes at other establishments, I decided to let Brenda have a go. Amazing. Brenda trained with Anastasia, brow waxer of the stars. She never goes too thin, but gives a beautiful arch. If you want to make an afternoon of it, schedule a facial as well. love, love, LOVE DK Hair! I've tried salons all over San Diego but have been loyal to DK for a few years now. The staff are super nice and very talented, I have never seen anyone leave this place with less than stellar cut or color. Stephanie is my usual stylist for cut (and does a faboosh job), and I love seeing Brittany or Lindsey for my blonde maintenance- they keep my hair in great condition. The salon itself is clean, well lit, nicely decorated and I always find myself bopping my head to the music. Street parking is my only complaint (but the staff here is always gracious about running out to fill your meter if needed).
