I just had my hair done at Pixie Salon for the first time. I was very nervous since I had never been there before. Kimberly was amazing! She was so friendly and sweet, she listened carefully to what I wanted and my balayage and hair cut turned out perfect! Trying a new hair salon let alone a new hairdresser is always risky... but I decided to try out Marcie because of a recommendation from my previous hairdresser, and now I am absolutely hooked! The salon and staff were both amazing and I was extremely pleased with the service. I walked in and Marcie introduced herself and was extremely friendly. When I sat down, she offered me tea or water... now come on, in how many hair salons do you get that kind of service?! She must have known caffeine is the way to my heart. I had such high hopes for this place, but I left very disappointed. I went to get balayage, I even sent a picture of what I wanted. I wanted copper/burgundy balayage but I left with my hair just dyed red. I also got a hair cut, I was very specific about not wanting a straight cut and yet that's what I left with. I ended up paying over $130 and spending 3+ hours there for color that I could have easily done myself at home and a cut I am unhappy with. Also, it's been about 5 days since and the color continues to bleed out from my hair ruining towels of mine. I have had my hair dyed many times and this has never happened to me before. I'm not going back and I will tell others not to go here either. read more

I really enjoyed my pedi by Yanina yesterday. Her cute little area is private & in the back of the Pixie salon. The room is relaxing, smells great and overlooks the patio. Also, there is plenty street parking. Yanina was so sweet and my toes look so cute! She uses Zoya polish and essential oils for her pedicures. She was friendly, easygoing and she offers online bookings. I was offered something to drink when I first arrived and was treated to a nice cup of coffee freshly brewed from a french press. This place is fantastic! I had my curly hair cut, re-styled, and re-highlighted by Paula Diamond (real name) several weeks ago and I can finally rest well knowing that I've found My Salon in San Diego. Especially after my first experience in trying a new salon was such a dud. The owners are friendly (and from WI--bonus!) and the place is cute and fun without being over the top noisy/trendy/hipster/snoozer. Paula was a hoot--this woman has the energy of a pixie-sticked grade school kid, and I was her last appointment of the evening! She took her time, made gradual changes on my very curly hair and told me every five minutes what a blast she was having cutting my hair. I think she was more excited about my new 'do than I was--and I was, to use her fave word, "stoked" myself. I asked for a partial highlight and Paula added some fresh highlights in addition to revitalizing the dark and embarrassing beanie of roots I'd been sporting for a good six weeks. She gave me a great cut, exactly what I asked for, and spent over two hours making sure I was enjoying myself and I was happy with the result. All for $90, a great deal. I will happily go back to Pixies and am doing my best to spread the word about their fantasticness. The other reviews speak to their other services, including selling products (B&B) and local art. For those of you yelpers who did a search for "CURLY HAIR," your search can stop now--call Pixies, go for Paula (though I'm confident that the other ladies are just as good), and go relax, knowing that your ringlets, curly-q's, stubborn wavy-but-not-curly locks and everything in between will be in safe and fun-loving hands. read more

I have to start by saying that I haven't received any services from Pixie Salon. But, it's not for lack of trying to get in. I called yesterday afternoon to make an appointment with Jenny. The receptionist informed me that Jenny likes to make her own appointments and that she would give her a message. That was Wednesday. This morning, Thursday, I looked at the website that I said I could contact her via email. So, I sent an email. No reply. It is now almost 10pm on Thursday night. I wanted to try a new salon in the neighborhood. Since it's only four blocks away from my house, I thought I would give it a try. You would think that an owner of a salon would return a call or if she wasn't taking new clients, maybe recommend another stylist or something. I guess I can take a hint. Having just moved from NYC to San Diego, i was informed by a fellow NY-er that finding a good haircut and color was difficult in SD. Looking at her recent haircut, I admit I was scared. Usually I keep these things a secret but after many "great hair" compliments, I couldn't hold my friends at bay any longer, and I broke down. Prices are great, atmosphere is very cool and they even have spa services (that I have yet to try but will very soon!). ***UPDATE*** This past Friday I experienced the hands of Monique-on my skin people. Her facial was amazing, relaxing and surprisingly educational. Monique sits with you before assessing your skin and asks questions about your routine, what you have tried and what you find works. Extractions, pain free. Seriously. I told her that she has the most soothing way of extracting. If I said an "ow" (which I am a baby and feel the pain before it occurs), she was quick to "shuuush, it's okay". Like mom, but she is too young. Afterwards, Monique sat and discussed what she used on my skin. No hard sell here, she recommended her line as well as suggested drugstore brands. Monique also suggested supplements such as probiotics and wheat germ. It was very interesting, I never felt rushed and you can't beat the price, $70 for 70 minutes. Plan ahead and you will be thankful. A friend of mine (whose hair always garners attention for its sleek and sexy cut) recommended Michelle, and though I felt rather apprehensive due to the whole "you can't cheat on your hairstylist" gig in these parts, I gave her a shot. The world was in a happy place that day: I finally had an idea of what I wanted, and was able to express this in a fashion that a stylist could understand and create on my own head and a new stylist to give me that extra zing in a new cut. Michelle did exactly what I was hoping for, and it was an enjoyable time during it - perfect! I believe 2 of her sisters also work at Pixie and have their own loyal following. Pixie Salon is the best!!! I have been going here for about eight years. Before this, I could never find a stylist that actually gave me some style. Pixie Salon is located in South Park in a small set of buildings. The neighborhood is safe and there is a nice little cafe next door if you need a snack before your haircut. But they always have cookies, coffee and tea in the salon. Depending on the time of day, you may need to give yourself five minutes to find street parking, but there is usually parking in front and it is always at no cost. Amy R. is my stylist. She is so talented and is a great listener. She can make anything happen and she always has your best interests in mind. For instance, she steered me away from a Brazilian blowout. I have never been dissatisfied with her talents. She does great highlights. She is very versatile. She can go from trendy to conservative. I am able to text Amy to get appointments and she usually has the day and time that I need. I know that Amy and the other stylists stay up to date by attending styling conferences on a regular basis. Everyone that works there is very friendly. The shop has artistic decor that is always changing. It makes your whole experience entertaining. Although, I do miss the teal chaise lounge. They also give local artists space to hang their work. They also host a local artist who sells jewelry. There is even a cute little patio out back. They don't push their hair products, but they have everything you need, if you want to buy it. Overall, I highly recommend Pixie Salon and especially, Amy R! read more

After a less than perfect experience at another salon, I found Pixie Salon. Michelle, the girl I now go to, is possibly even more amazing than my LA hairdresser! She always has an idea about something new to do (which is very important for someone like me, who gets bored easily), and my hair always looks great after. Even better, you always are offered coffee, tea, or water, the decor of the salon is really nice, and they're not that expensive (compared to what my San Diego friends say they pay to get their hair cut). Since my lovely hairdresser lady relocated to another state, I've been hopping from 'dresser to 'dresser for the last 5+ years, never quite satisfied with either the environment, price or stylist... My hair was fabulous too less than two hours later. Amy did a color correction on my too-blond hair and gave me a cut I'd been wanting. How can I even begin to thank Michele for being so awesomely talented? She is damn good at what she does! I live in Boston, but get my hair cut from her a couple times per year when visiting San Diego. I have curly hair and she is the only one I trust and the only person that has ever done a good job. This past weekend, I got married, and she did both my hair and my matron of honor's hair (picture is with succulent crown). It looked perfect - even better than I could have imagined!! Everyone commented on how nice my hair looked, and how it was very "me." Michele does a great job of matching your personality to a hairstyle that will match perfectly.
