I have been getting haircuts from Mark for a couple of years. I stopped coloring my hair and let it go gray, and the texture changes etc were really weird, and I couldn't quite figure out how to make it look its best. Mark cuts it very conservatively and precisely, and he listens and comprehends my concerns and preferences. Since going to him, it seriously has never looked better. So let me explain the process that went along with this hair salon. I was contacted by a very sweet stylist-in-training who informed me that she needed to practice coloring and my blonde ends were the perfect candidate. She told me coloring prices for her would range from $10-37 and that the owner would cut my hair for $10. I was intrigued but obviously skeptical. So I sent her a picture of the kind of color I wanted and asked if she could do that. She replied yes so I went ahead and scheduled an appointment with her. When I arrived and met her she was very sweet and respectful and her (Denice) and the lead color stylist named Corrin were coordinating to figure out what they wanted to do with my hair. Denice constantly checked in with Corrin so I felt like I was in good hands. However when my hair was finally rinsed and starting to dry I realized that the color was now where near the picture I sent. I was very disappointed to see that the stylists went with what they thought looked good instead of what I wanted. They also neglected to bleach my roots so they are significantly darker than the rest of my hair now. I thought that's ok the color is still nice, just not what I wanted. Then it was time to cut it. I asked the owner if we could do whatever looked nice as long as I could keep as much length as possible. He proceeded to tell me that my hair was two different lengths and the layers (that I specifically requested from my previous cut at a different salon) were too short and frayed. So I asked if we could trim everything up and even out the length and he proceeded to tell me "no". Because "you're not ready for an actual haircut yet". I was immediately confused and taken aback. I had just given my permission to even out the length and fix my layers, I just didn't want 6 inches cut off my length (which he very obviously wanted to do). I simply stated that I would like to keep as much of the length as I could WHILE still being able to even things out. And he told me "no". Im sorry, am I not paying for the service? So he proceeded to trim the very bottom of my hairline and my bangs upon request and blow dry it. I felt like that entire interaction was extremely rude and wish Corrin or Denice would have cut my hair instead. When I went up to pay I was informed that it would be $57 and I scratched my head. If the max for the coloring was $37 and the not-haircut from the owner was $10 then how did my total come out to $57?? At this point I just wanted to leave and never come back so I gave Denice $65 and told her to keep the change for herself. The only reason I am not giving this a single star review is because of Denice, who had the professionalism and respect of a professional while still being in training. Included are the pictures of the color I wanted and what I got. Like I said, the color doesn't look bad but it's not what I wanted. I came for an appointment that I made (first time client) and I am in disbelief. I did not get the name of the person assigned to do my hair but I would beware of this place. The hairstylist I was assigned to was so *unbelievably* unhelpful. I showed him ONE picture of what I wanted and explained EXACTLY to the point what I wanted. I told him that I was worried about going too short so I wanted to trim two inches and see how the length was, and if I wanted it shorter, to just trim another inch ("you can't cut less, but you can always cut more" as many, many other hairstylist have told me before.) He made up every single excuse as to why he couldn't do that. He didn't give me any suggestions or try to help me make a decision, he just kept telling me "you really just seem like you don't know what you want" and "are you sure you don't want to just take some more time and think about it?" I mean seriously, he kept INSISTING that I didn't know what I wanted. After 10 minutes of trying to explain to him and begging for him to just trim my hair, I left. I just cannot wrap my head around the fact that any hairstylist would have a paying client in their chair with the most simple thing any hairstylist could do and insist they leave. We all get bad hair cuts. It happens. You grow it out and you move on. But the haircut I got at Dearinger was so bad I feel obligated to warn people. I hate leaving negative Yelp reviews, but here's a few things you should know before you go... 1. They will not curl your hair or use any irons to style. Per Mark "Curling the hair hides a bad hair cut. We focus on good hair cuts and techniques. Anyone can cut you hair and curl it and it will look good, but here we are all about a haircut so clean you can wash and go." 2. They don't use round brushes with their blowouts. I was OK with that because I don't round brush my hair, but I thought I should mention it for those expecting a silky, volume-filled blow out. Mark, the owner, was my stylist and I should have paid better attention to my gut instincts after we started talking. All I wanted was a trim to take the dead ends off. He took almost 2 inches and I'm going to need to cut another two cut off to fix it. When he looked at the cut and realized what he had done, his first suggestion was for me to go home and try to curl it. This hole in the wall may be overlooked at times in the bustling city of san diego but make no mistake this is a temple for the finest hairstylists in the san diego area. Never have I been treated like an absolute queen in a hair salon from first entering to leaving. The customer service is perfection they were quick, attentive, and pleasant. When I went in they massaged my scalp with various soaps and water I was falling fast asleep almost as if I was ascending into heaven. I came in yesterday to use my groupon for full highlights and a cut. The colorist told me she was going to charge me $40 extra because she was going to use toner. But then when I went to pay, the receptionist told me that they were charging me the $40 for having long hair. The whole situation came off like they wanted to charge me $40 extra, so they just made up some reason. Also both the stylist and colorist were standing at the register with EIGHT products they tried to sell me. Beware if you have a group on, they will try to add on charges. I paid $114 (groupon, "fee", and tip) for what is supposedly $197 worth of services, and my hair looks TERRIBLE. I posted a picture to show you what a $197 gets you here. Go somewhere else. As far as the cut goes, I asked for a trim, and I got a trim, so no complaints there. Koji seems nice enough, total spaz, and the shampoo was uncomfortable, but whatever. read more

I now live in Escondido and have to drive all the way to downtown to get my hair cut by Aaron. I want to stop, but the cuts are like drugs. Very hip, progressive salon with talented stylists. First the things I like and why I have been going back: They know how to cut hair with precision and do color that generally matches what I want. They listen and execute to achieve the results I want. Koji is a great cutter and Sandy a great colorist. Ok, the minor things I don't like: The male receptionist seemed completely clueless when I called for my first appointment and requested a consultation. He was clueless when I showed up and didn't seem to know how to greet clients and get them settled. I haven't seen him the last time I was there, so maybe this is a non issue. The atmosphere is very minimalist-- bare walls, concrete floors, no decoration in the open room. Would be nice for them to add a little bit of decor to soften the austerity of the room. My hair is damaged because "the colorist" Jocelyn let the color process for over an hour. Both the owner and I tried to get her to rinse my hair, and she sat around doing nothing until I had to demand it. Mark finally started rinsing it for me and the sink was full of hair that had fallen out as a result. I called and left messages, and finally, my call was returned, I spoke directly to Jocelyn who assured me she would provide me with a refund, this was over two weeks ago, and it's not been processed nor has a refund been received in any other form. I've been going to Dearinger for over 5 years and after I found this place, I won't let anyone else touch my hair. Jocelyn and Mark are practically miracle workers with my hair, and the cuts grow in beautifully. I came in on opening day after quarantine and they were both professional and followed every sanitsry practice imaginable. Well, I thought I'd grow into the haircut and have it feel at least a LITTLE better, but it's been 2.5 weeks and I like it less and less with each day. I went in to get my hair trimmed. I have a pretty short pixie cut with bangs, and I was looking to get a close shave on the sides of my head again. Things were going well at first. But then Mark kind of refused to shave the side of my head all the way to my part. He left this weird fringe at the part and said, no this is better. This way, when you're growing your hair out, it'll look more natural. When I protested and said I was unsure, he kind of just brushed aside my concerns and left the fringe. Then after a while, he started to hear my concerns and tried to "blend" the fringe with my bangs. And proceeded to just chop my bangs off. His hands must have slipped or something when he realized he cut way more hair than he needed to. What is left is that now I have a chunk of hair that is no longer long enough to go with my bangs, but too short to be combed over with the rest of my part. So now, it kind of just juts outwards and upwards, like a horn. What's worse is that before, when I woke up, I had close to zero hair maintenance. Now, I wake up, and both the fringe and the horn stick straight up and it takes me SO much time and hair product to try to get the both of them to lay down in the right direction. I left the haircut feeling unsure, but hopeful that maybe I would grow into the haircut. Now, I'm pretty sure I hate it, and praying that the hair grows back FAST. read more

A perfect cut and color! When I went in to dearinger I had bleach patches in my thick streaky highlights and a choppy cut from a few months ago from a different salon. They were able to tone the brassiness, minimize the patches, and bring my hair to a nice subtly highlighted base to work with to add more highlights to later all while keeping it healthy and long If you're ever in Gaslamp check them out! I only went to Dearinger because of the $19 Groupon that I bought for a haircut . The reviews were good and yelp you haven't done me wrong, but wow, this time, you did. Aaron butchered my hair. It took 5 months to grow it out and the next stylist who saw my hair said she could tell how poorly blended my hair was cut. I have wavy hair and you do not cut CHUNKS into them. And my "bangs"--more like half-bangs that a kindergartener cut with their flimsy, orange, plastic scissors. And when he saw the damage, he flat ironed the hell out of my hair (which I instructed him I don't like and don't use in my everyday styling) hoping it would hide the mess he made. God, I just wanted out of there! To make matters worse, the experience was terrible. The worst shampoo I ever had--and he walked away while my hair was dripping wet and awkwardly sitting in the hair washing bowl. He didn't say a word to me. SILENCE. I have never had a hair stylist not even try to make conversation. He handed me a magazine and basically instructed me to "Trust him" because my hair "was a mess." Although I told him what I wanted, he showed no care. Apparently KOJI is the one to go to. I saw him in action and he seemed like a blast. The girl who's hair he was cutting was having an awesome time. Other than a nice haircut, I would have liked that too, Aaron. Never again! 2 stars because the products they use are good so my hair did feel healthy when I left, and the receptionist was very friendly. But if that's all that matters to you, and not getting a good haircut or having a good time, then go here. EDIT: Aaron did send me an apology, which I appreciate. My favorite stylist here is Daniel Ngo. This review is for his meticulous work and sweet style. Daniel takes his work seriously and its transparent from his fabulous cuts. I can't say enough good things about him. All my girlfriends are always shocked when I tell them a guy cuts my hair. Once I refer them to him, they become faithful clients also. If your tired of getting rush through cuts, you won't experience that with him. Daniel takes his time and makes sure every strand is perfectly even. I've been here 3 times and only because I've either had a discount coupon or a referral credit. All the stylists have such awesome and edgy hair yet everytime I walk out of there, I feel very ho-hum about the way it turned out. The first time I was cut and color it was fine so that prompted me to return. The second time I went in, the color was fine but the cut was not what I liked. He cut it blunt at the end rather than taped for "easier styling" and I hated it but was too lazy to go back and ask for it to be corrected and embarassed because the stylist was so nice. It was nothing personal so I let it grow out and then returned once more. My third and most recent time, I wasn't happy with either the cut or color. Again, nothing personal to either stylists but I fee like they will do what they want rather then what you describe to them that you want. I first asked for lighter shaded panels in my hair but she said that since it was long, panels would not be a good idea even though the girl next to me was getting them. I ended up with some stringy looking white streaks in the front of my head contrasted with my natural black which didn't look cute at all. As far as the cut, I didn't get what I wanted at all. I feel like he knew what he wanted to do regardless of what I said and when I asked him to cut a little more here and there, he flat out said NO and laughed at me for even asking. If you don't bring a picture of exactly what you want your color or cut to look like, you may be in trouble. I wear my hair back most of the time because even after 3 weeks I still cannot get used to the way my hair looks and look in the mirror and be excited about it. I'm just waiting for the roots to get unbearably long and then see where else I may roam. I live in PB where there is a salon on every block so likely it won't be hard to find a replacement. I've referred 4 friends there during the Feb referral promotion and unfortunately none have returned after their initial service. One even had to come back for a color "re-do". Two of them felt like they didn't get what they asked for and the last one was my boyfriend who gave the stylist free range over his cut and ended up walking out with a copy cat cut as the stylist which was not as flattering on him as it was on the stylist. Again, I give the cleanliness and friendliness of this place and A+ but just on the fence otherwise and not sure I could rally myself or any more of my friends to keep going. read more

This has GOT to be one of THE WORST Salons I have EVER been to! I "won" a makeover from CW 5 to this salon. 1st of all the contest said you would receive hair care products & up to $300 in salon services. The one caveat was being willing to cut your hair to your shoulders and change the color. That was cool with me, I was nervous for a drastic cut but decided a change would be good. They never mentioned you had no say what so ever in the cut of your hair, and the owner Mark Dearinger had no qualms doing whatever the hell he wanted, irregardless of your wishes. I agreed to go darker in color and had to beg for even the 1 tiny strip under my hair of a red color. The color turned out an ugly mousy brown with lines going around my head where the "colorist" missed. Mark then swoops in without any consult as to my wishes for my hairstyle and begins cutting. I could tell I was getting a generic bob, and asked if at least it could angle down towards the front. His response "I guess I could do that a little" by little he apparently meant 1/2cm. I am now left with an awful coloring job, and a hairstyle that makes me look 10 years older, has no shape, is completely unflattering, and basically looks like a bowl cut bob. To top it all off the free hair care products in the giveaway...not so much, though they did try to SELL me some products! Worst experience ever, would never recommend even for a "free" haircut which isn't so free when you have to go somewhere and pay to have them fix his mess! read more

Let me preface this by saying, I'm really picky about my haircuts and I have unruly hair. I got my hair cut at this salon once and I was unhappy with it because they didn't listen to me when I was telling them my taste. 1) I have really thick hair, so I'd like to thin it out and give it movement, but I don't like short layers because it makes me look like I have a mullet (she gave me short layers) 2) I like the A-line in my bob because it suits my face shape better (she removed the angle in my bob which made my chubby cheeks look unnecessarily fat) After a few days of being really unhappy with the cut, I couldn't stand it anymore so I made an appointment to get it fixed. When I arrived, Mark greeted me. He was very friendly and took his time discussing the look I wanted to achieve. He really listened to my opinions and gave me his own tips from his professional point of view- and he was right! He let me know that although he was not the person who would actually be doing the cut, he would explain what I wanted to my stylist. And he did. Jocelyn cut my hair and she did a great job.
