We received a total of 4 quotes for a shower repair job from different independent contractors as well as the large box stores. We picked Duane because he was the only person who told us that we could save a considerable amount of money by repairing the shower insert instead of replacing it. We first used them a few years ago to side our 100-year-old home. They removed the original siding, made repairs to the sheathing of the home, as needed, then wrapped the house with a hydro-wrap, that would ensure that if water ever did get behind the siding at some future time, it would just shed from the house. They used Hardi plank siding and matched the reveal and surface to match the original siding. They replaced all window trim (why not since all the siding is replaced?) and matched the original design. They discovered that the corbels (knee brackets) that stuck out from the house at the roof were rotted, so we replaced all of them. They only use Benjamin Moore paint, which they have found lasts longest. Our house was sided by them 3 years ago and the paint, including on the south facing side, looks as good as the day they painted it with two coats. Now, we have just built a tiny house in our rear yard. I called Scott to come and give a quote. It was very reasonable and we knew that if we used Better Homes, we would get excellent work. They just finished today and the tiny house looks fantastic. They trimmed the door and windows to look like the main home, so there's a nice design consistency. Throughout the process, Scott Herndon has visited the site every day, met with me and answered any questions I had satisfactorily. As a final note, if I could give a score about 5 stars that Google allows, I would do that. Go with Better Homes, you won't be disappointed!

Better Homes Inc exceeded my expectations on every detail of my extensive, exterior renovation…read more After researching about eight siding and window contractors, and seeking quotes from three, I chose Better Homes Inc. and I am extremely happy that I did. Scott and his team exceeded my expectations at every step - contract/pricing, windows, siding, painting, custom details, timeline and clean-up. I cannot overstate how anxious I was over this large and unfamiliar work so communication was a key factor for me and Scott never disappointed. He was either at the job site or called/texted me virtually every day and responded promptly when I contacted him. This may not be what everyone needs, but Scott recognized that I did and it was very reassuring during the turmoil of the renovation. My house is small, but almost 50 years old and had two layers of siding with no underlayment. There were hundreds of nails poking through the soffit, wires and service boxes attached all over the old siding, potential dry rot and rusty bars over most of the windows and doors. Add an assertive, anxious homeowner with some unusual custom finish requests and you will understand better the challenges Better Homes Inc was facing. Scott is very experienced, knows current building codes, and manufacturers' installation guidelines and can clearly explain the reasoning for these necessary steps and materials. This experience also means that he also has a great variety of suggestions for sound design options and will share the pros and cons of those options. They made an oversize bid for work that did not need to be done to jack up the price, and my insurance allowed the fees, but they cut corners everywhere they could and did not do the work that was needed. I had to call them out on it so many times it became a daily review of the work to make sure it wasn't shoddy. they abandoned the job for a full month and after many attempts to reach the foreman, I called the owner to complain. They stated they were waiting on tiles, but I still didn't have walls in my kitchen and the drywall was ready to go. My kitchen floor sags and the marmoleum is cut all over in weird places. the trim is falling off. there are many patches left where they didn't paint the walls. I am constantly scraping caulking off of walls and trim where it wasn't cleaned up. there is no insulation in the outside walls. they didn't reattach doors. they just left one day. I don't speak Russian by my phone can translate and some of the workers were quite cruel about my disability and my gender identity, as well as racist towards other people. -000/10 do not recommend.

I also had him frame out and finish an attic entryway in the master bedroom that had popcorn and remove an old cable jack and phone outlet on the wall, patching those areas with drywall. I found his name mentioned on a Nextdoor post from a neighbor down the street from me. After accepting his bid, he was quick to call me to set up a time to sign the contract and to look over the job site. He was able to put me on the schedule within two days of my agreeing to hire him. He worked consecutively for three days. He completed the job on a Wednesday evening around 8:30pm. It was late and dark in the rooms, and I did a quick assessment with the flashlight on my phone. I pointed out a couple areas where I could still see the seams in the drywall, and he reassured me those wouldn't be noticeable once everything had dried. I paid him the remainder of the money and we parted ways. Next day afternoon, I was able to see the finished work in daylight with a better light source, and was not pleased with the work done. I was able to see almost all of the drywall seams. The corners in the attic entryway were not clean and smooth, and there were random marks and lines in the textured ceiling. Texturing was not done evenly. The texture was so thin in some areas that I could see the sheetrock and heavy in other spots where it was dripping down more than a ¼" and casting shadows. Texturing was also done with the attic door sitting in place. The door was sealed to the attic entry where heavy texture dried. I had rip that apart to push the attic door open. The corners in the living room area were not completely filled in nor smooth looking. I was very disappointed that someone who had 13 years experience would leave me with this quality. After a couple days of phone tag, we talked on Saturday. It was a heated conversation on both ends, but we resolved he would come back on Monday to fix any issues. However, during that conversation, he openly admitted to: 1. Rushing the job because it was late, he was tired and wanted to go home and go to bed. He finished on Wednesday, yet he gave himself until Friday in the contract to complete the job. 2. Having inadequate lighting to do the job. Even though the photos that he took of his completed work looked sufficient, after seeing the photos that i had taken during the daylight and with a better light source, showing my dissatisfaction, he realized that his work was not great and blamed that on not having enough light. He was aware that neither bedroom had any lighting going into the job, yet he chose to finish the work at 8:30pm with no daylight and only one light in the room. 3. Not having the correct nozzle for his texturing machine. A better nozzle was left on another jobsite, yet he still decided to use one that he had less control of to get the job done faster. He did use the use the word "nit-picky" when I was voicing my dissatisfaction. I feel that I have a right to be nit-picky about a job in which I'm spending a large chunk of money, putting my trust in him to do good work and wanting clean looking ceilings that I will be living with for the next 5-10+ years. Bobby came back on Monday. He couldn't give me a timeframe of when he would arrive and start work because it depended on how early his guys would get out of bed and get to the job site. In the end, the work looked much better. The seams in the second bedroom were still slightly noticeable, but I made the decision to call the job complete with the idea that adding primer and paint would hide it. Unfortunately, I can still see them after painting. I can say that I will not call him again nor recommend him to a friend.

He tries to be transparent and clear about design changes that are necessary due to realities of construction and his team definitely went above and beyond to try and make things work exactly like we wanted. We hired Bobby and his team to install a new catio/dog run for us. While I have experience building cat furniture, overhead storage in my garage, etc, and have no fear of any DIY work, this was to be installed on the front of my house and I wanted to make sure it was professionally made and attractive. I was impressed by how into the details Bobby was during the initial design/estimate process. He outlined the exact materials he'd use, which gave me confidence that he understood the full scope of what we were looking for. I created design pictures to make it clearer what we had in mind. He had me do the leg work of finding the exact materials I had in mind for the wire mesh & lattice sections, as well as purchase the door, dog door, and door hardware to ensure they used exactly what we wanted. The entire project included: 1) Adding a new exterior door at the end of a hallway to lead into the catio (this previously was a full wall with no door). 2) Building the catio/dog run structure itself. 3) Building a door frame and hanging a door (originally we wanted him to build the door too, but due to the keycode lock we wanted he decided mid-project that we would be better off buying a door for them to install instead) for leading from the catio/dog run into the yard. 4) Adding a roof to the top of the catio/dog run to allow the pets to enjoy the outside even when it's raining. 5) Covering the outside & uncovered sections of the structure with a combination of lattice (to obscure neighbors' view of any potential dog/cat poop) and wire mesh (for better view of the nearby bird feeders for the cats) and to prevent any of the pets escape. 6) (Contracted separately by us with a landscaper, since Bobby doesn't do this himself) - Prepare/level the ground and install artificial turf for the flooring. We had this done in two parts, the ground was prepped before Bobby started, and the turf was installed once the crew was done with the worst of the stomping around for building the structure so they didn't mess up the brand new turf. This was the first time I had hired a contractor for a project with this many parts to it, so it was a bit of a learning process of how things go. Here are some of our learnings I'll share to make things easier on both sides: 1) Realize that the estimate Bobby gives at the start will NOT be the final price. We had a bit of a surprise at the end when the total project cost rose about 5K more than the estimate. Some of these were unavoidable surprises, like realizing our wall framing was 2x6, not 2x4, which meant the door we had purchased needed to be rehung on an appropriately sized frame. Others were due to the fact that Bobby is a general contractor, not a specialist, and can't perfectly predict how much work a complicated, novel project will take. He has a business to run and needs to pay his crew fairly for their time, so taking extra layers of paint to finish a wall, needing to demo more than expected due to the intricacies of your siding, etc, will be considered changes on his side from the original estimate that you'll have to square up at the end. 2) Over explain expectations. Bobby and his team are great at making things work and problem solving anything they're aware of, but they're looking at things from a builder perspective. They know how to make things easier to build, but might not realize what consequences some of those design decisions have. In our case, we didn't explicitly mention that the catio needed to be completely enclosed, and Bobby didn't know that cats could climb up to the top of an enclosure. So when we pointed out mid project "Hey, how are you closing that gap between the roof section and the wall of the house?" it took some quick thinking on Bobby's part to resolve it. He ended up closing the gap with wire mesh which accomplished the job. 3) Make sure you understand the full design that Bobby is proposing. I was a little surprised when one of the support posts was in front of our bathroom window. It's only a single post, so it doesn't obstruct the view much, but if I were to go back in time to the start of the project I would have pointed out this in my original expectations better so Bobby could adjust the design accordingly. All told, the finished project is fantastic and solidly built! There are some very minor aesthetic flaws (they used too long of nails on the roof, so they're visible on the underside, and the paint he told me to pick up for finishing up the hall isn't a perfect match), and the catio door is having some minor alignment issues now that will be easily rectified, but overall I'm thrilled with the results! HM's representatives were great and very accommodating; they showed up on time and kept us comprised of the progress at each point along the way. Plus, the workmanship was excellent, and we are extremely happy with the result. But what distinguishes Hamish Murray from other good contractors is his honesty and integrity. About a year after the end of the project, I contacted them about leakage through a new retaining wall. Hamish himself came out to take a look. He decided it needed to be excavated and waterproofed, and that a drainage pipe should be installed. Moreover, he is doing all this new work for free, because he believed it was a mistake on their part not to do it during the construction period. Now THAT'S integrity! Fast forward 20 years and we reached a point in life where we could afford to turn our place into what we always knew it could be. Hamish Murray was extremely flexible when it came to the bidding process and the various hoops we had to jump through to for the bank to finance our construction loan (check out Clackamas County Bank.) With Hamish Murray the price they quoted you is the price you're going to pay. While we made them suffer through countless change orders as we added mid-project upgrades, never did I hear that something was going to cost more than was originally quoted. I grew up working on wooden boats and old houses on the east coast, so often when I look at modern construction it doesn't feel like it has the same craftsman attention to detail as you'd see in early 20th century work. That's not the case with Hamish Murray. The subs they used cared deeply about their craft and you can tell in every corner. If something looked at all sloppy, it was redone without question or cost to me. Concrete was re-poured, cabinets were repainted - the level of quality assurance was what you'd expect out of a builder making their own home. Every morning as I have my coffee I feel like I'm on vacation in a fancy boutique hotel, but its my kitchen! Every night as tuck in the kids and lock up, I feel like I'm already in a dream.
