We decided to try DJ's for a recent Takeout Tuesday. It's been about 10 years since my last time here only because I don't work nearby anymore and my kid's have their favorite places. I convinced them to give it a try. We ordered the Goulash, roast pork and jaeger schnitzel. The best was the schnitzel, two large pieces fried perfectly. Everyone enjoyed this one. The roast pork was so dry and overcooked it was only partially saved by the gravy. Taste was pretty good but was seriously like jerky meat. Wouldn't recommend this. The goulash was the worst choice. Four small cubes of meat in ample gravy but no noticeable chunks of carrots or potatoes. This was really a sad dish. Flavor was mediocre at best. The kids favorite thing about the meal was the fresh bread. It was soft and chewy and they said that and the schnitzel were the best. Probably won't be going back again anytime soon. But if I do, I'll stick to the schnitzels. read more

It pains me to write this review. I've always enjoyed the food here and love supporting small business. I ordered from the lunch menu but they charged me the dinner price. Perhaps an honest mistake...? Paid my bill and drove off. Normally I double the tax to calculate tip but something seemed off. I see now they charged me 2.25 for tax on a bill of $17.80. That's over 10%. Concord sales tax is 8.75%. This seems to be too many coincidental mistakes that work in their favor. Sadly I do not feel comfortable patronizing them any longer. read more

It was my best friend and I's first time here and we were so excited to try this place. The waiter was very nice and friendly. We asked her what she recommended and she said: The Hungarian Goulash and the Jaeger Schnitzel. BOTH were very very good! The Hungarian Goulash was so flavorful that you could probably list the spices. The bread they offered we used to slurp up the sauce, it was incredilbly yummy. Of course we each ate half of our plate and then switched. The Jaeger Schnitzel was also very tasty. It kind of reminded me of chicken fried steak, but not really. lol. The pork was breaded, fried and crunchy. The spaetzel was delicious and I could probably eat that all by itself, but with the cabbage it added a whole different tasty experience. Everything blended well together. I look forward to coming back here. I'm dying to take my sister next time. Very easy to get to, parking lot, place on outside looks like it would be a bar or to-go place, but inside it's more elegant but small, nonetheless, the food rocks, so it really doesn't matter what the place looks like. This place might look kind of sketch driving up to it but it is SO WORTH IT. I've been here multiple times and it takes something special to go back when there are so many awesome places to eat in the bay area. The food is great, there is a really nice selection and while the service may not be your chatty mother-in-law type at your favorite diner, is authentic German and prompt. I love no matter when I go you can find your Europeans watching some kind of soccer on the TVs there. After having been to Germany myself and living with friends who are German, I know I could take them here and they'd be impressed with the food and the authenticity. And the prices are great. If the label "neighborhood gem" is ever appropriate then it must to go this small, yet fabulous restaurant hidden away in a non description strip mall If you like Schnitzel then please come and try this. Had the single Jaegar Schnitzel which is a pretty hefty portion. If super hungry order the regular which includes 2 pieces of Schnitzel. It comes with red cabbage which was delicious and a bacon infused spätzle. Paired with a Pilsner and you have a great dinner The first meal was so good that I now want to explore more of the menu. Am stretching myself a bit to give DJ's Bistro 4 stars. We have eaten at DJ's on several occasions over the years and until our most recent visit it was always a 4-star experience. This last time it was more of a 3-star visit for me although DH found no flaws. DH really enjoyed his cabbage soup while I found the house salad less satisfying. It looked and tasted a bit "tired." The bread basket only offered one kind of very soft bread ... too spongy in texture. DH and I both had the wiener schnitzel. The regular serving comes with two very large pieces of the schnitzel plus a side of potato salad. This time I found the schnitzel was lacking in seasoning and could have been pounded thinner. On the plus side, the serving size was so generous that both DH and I asked for a "to go" box. Good choices on beer, less so on wine. We were disappointed that on a Tuesday evening there was no apple strudel ... always a draw for me. Apparently they don't make it early in the week. There were no other dessert options. Not that I had room for dessert, but I at least like a choice. Usually there is just one server who has her hands full if the small restaurant is full as it has been on most times we have been at DJ's. We will certainly return to DJ's. I will be looking to try something besides the schnitzel. read more

This is probably the closest you can get to authentic Czech style food in the east bay besides my Czech mother in law's home cooking . I usually order my favorite dish , of hungarian goulash with of course knedlicky ( or Czech dumplings) and a glass of ice cold Pilsner Urquell. My husband usually orders the saurbraten or smazeny syr ( breaded cheese). The only complaint he has the potato salad being a bit bland or the dish being decorated with melon. A great place to go solo, get a table for 2, small group of 4-5, or even take out. Every time I've been here was afternoon and it was never too busy when I was there. The prices are decent and the portions are good sizes. They serve delicious fresh bread and butter right away. The schnitzel, Bavarian chicken, potato salad, kraut, and chicken noodle soup are some of my favorite things to get from here! They have a small beer and wine bar. There is a large tv to left of the bar that you can see from anywhere in the restaurant. It's located in a small shopping center. There is a shared parking lot available. the first time i have been back since it was sold and the disapointment was big in comparison to the former one. it is not only the price, what was before around $ 12 to 14 is now 22 for the lunch time schnitzel the quality of food and preperation also. first the meat is not pounded equal and close to 1/2 inch at places. the breading too fine, has a sweet taste and all comes loose from the meat , meaning the meat was not prepared right with egg / flower and or the oil not hot enough the "german type" potato salad is odd and tasteless and made with mayonese, it could have come from the price club. it is not worth to go there anymore for the food also not for the beer a 1/2 liter cost 10 dollar,i think it was 6 before which might cost them 1,50. and too bad monica is not there anymore either which gave it more a feeling of a european restaurant ! ernie read more

We had the weirdest experience trying to have dinner there. I made reservations for 7:00 pm, we arrived on time and were seated and given menus. The waitress come back in about 5 minutes and said that the chef had declared that he'd served the last table and was done for the night. We explained, politely, that we'd made reservations. She went back and talked to him, and returned saying that they were out of food. What..the..dickens?? I know that anyone reading this is going to think that we'd done something objectionable. No, we really didn't. Nor were we seemingly out of place - just three regular older folks. I can't imagine what was going on, but it's kind of unlikely that they simultaneously ran out of everything on the menu. We've eaten there previously, and the food has always been quite good - we'd actually gone there because it was our visiting friend's favorite restaurant. With all the rave reviews on DJ's, I really don't like being the wet blanket, but our experience tonight (second time) really only deserved those three stars. First off; is German food always so bland? We shared the pork roast, which was done well, but there was no seasoning detected. Adding salt and pepper helped, but couldn't overcome the lack of seasoning. The accompanying chopped lettuce salad was nicely chilled and crunchy, but lacked dressing. At the completion of our meal, I asked about dessert and was told they don't offer it. Soooo, no daily special, no dessert , and no seasoning equals three stars. To top it all off, the cook and presumably the owner, wandered around, greeting and hugging everyone, but never even looked our way, much less speaking to us. Not a welcoming atmosphere, which should have knocked off another star. Could that be the reason for only three other tables being occupied? And four people (regulars) seated at the bar. Otherwise, DJ's seems like a nice place, clean, abundant parking, affordable, but like that failed restaurant on the Moon, no atmosphere. read more

We were a party of 3 and all had different dishes. Hungarian Goulash - yummy! Slightly sweet sauce / gravy over very tender meat. Pork Goulash (special of the day) was as good and the meat was very tasty. Bratwurst - I couldnt taste it as the person who ordered it didnt want to share so I'm assuming that it was well worth it! Cucumber salad - very good, not anywhere near as sour as my mom made it. $4 for a 1/2 litre of ice cold, imported beer - great deal compared to other bars. Service - while almost all the tables were filled and there was only one waitress, she was slower than expected. She even came back to our table, asked if we needed anything else, and when we said no, we expected the check. 15 minutes later, we had to request it - and then it took another 15 minutes to get it and pay it. Although most refer to it as German, I think it's more accurate to describe the food as Czech. But that's splitting hairs. Solid, heavy, meat and starch - that's what it is. Prepared well and a lot of food for the price. The standard schnitzel covers the plate and you need a big appetite to dispose of it. After learning just how big I've moved to the half portion. Service is usually just fine. Not super friendly usually but polite and efficient. The interior is cozy and gives off a nice gemütlichkeit vibe. It's not everyday you stumble upon a restaurant that does German food. I have very little experience with German cuisine to base this review off of so I'll just tell it as it is. The restaurant is cozy and dimly light which can make for a more intimate lunch or dinner. It may be around $16 per dish, but you can definitely share it with someone else--portions are huge! Complimentary bread with butter served first, bread was pretty good. We got the goulash and bavarian chicken. A soup or salad comes with each dish so we got a salad and the soup of the day which was goulash soup. Salad wasn't anything special, just a side salad with a light tzatziki-type sauce that was pretty good. Goulash soup had a very mild flavor. Goulash had a good sauce and the meat was very tender. Spaetzle was something I never had before and it was pretty interesting. I liked it when I had it with the sauce, but otherwise there isn't much flavor. They also give a lot of it with the goulash. Bavarian chicken was really tender and was very crispy yet not heavy at all. It didn't seem like there was that much flavor in the chicken, but I liked it even though it seemed a little plain. Everything seemed to lack just a bit of flavor so it would be more like a 3.5 stars, but this is from someone who has yet eaten enough German food to really know. This place is my favorite for so many reasons but the best one is simply the fact that it tastes just like my grandmas food which I unfortunately can not have anymore. I have tried numerous dishes and each one has been amazing. Jaeger Schnitzel is probably my go to favorite the spaetzle and red cabbage is amazing right along side it. Hungarian Goulash is also very good and also served with spaetzle. Sauerbraten (or Bohemian Sauerbraten) and Pork roast are also very good. Sometimes they have a daily special of knuckle that looks fantastic but I haven't tried yet, when you see it come through the dining room however heads do turn.
