He is very professional and always pays attention to every little detail. He can really lean into a theme or be flexible and take requests. I'm a bit of a control freak, and Jon was was super flexible with my musical selection. I had a very specific playlist, as well as a very specific "don't" playlist, and he executed it perfectly! Jon is an absolutely fantastic DJ who I would recommend over and over again for all types of occasions. Jon was the DJ for our wedding and exceeded all expectations that we had for our DJ experience. From the beginning he was very communicative and accommodating of our busy schedules. He made sure to ask all the right questions and to dive into exactly what we wanted for our big day. DJ Gatsby / Jon DJed our wedding just this past weekend, and we couldn't be more pleased with how it went! The 2 main points to convey about Jon are 1) He really, really, really wanted us to be happy with his Dj-ing and he really, really, REALLY wanted our guests to have a good time. 2) He is just a really great DJ. He knows how to spin and transition songs seamlessly (and in an order that make sense). And he knows how to read a crowd - that coupled with the above points made him a PHENOMENAL DJ for our wedding. Relatively speaking, we were a little late in the game for securing a DJ, so we were extremely excited (and lucky) to find Jon when we did. From the get go, he was extremely sweet and professional, and made it very clear that he wanted us to be happy and our guests to have a great time. His responsiveness was prompt and complete. He had a very thorough song and preference list, and we felt like he really listened to us and gave us everything that we wanted and more. Jon is fantastic! We really wanted a DJ who we could completely trust with the playlist for our ceremony and reception and not have to detail every song to be played. Jon took our input from a comprehensive song list he sent us and put together an amazing set for our wedding. We hired DJ Gatsby (Jon) for our wedding outside Austin a few weeks ago. We were really hoping to stay away from the prototypical cheesy wedding DJ that we had experienced at so many weddings before. I knew Jon was a unique find as soon as I looked through his "resume". This guy has serious DJ chops - he's worked in many different cities in all sorts of different venues. Not your typical wedding DJ. Leading up to the event, Jon was extremely organized, professional, and friendly. I can't stress enough how important this is for hiring wedding vendors. Jon clearly lives and breathes music, and I think this gives him the ability to make great decisions on the fly to guide the mood on the dance floor. DJ Gatsby was a fantastic fit for our wedding! He listened carefully to our music choices and made the backdrop for our wedding a perfect combination of sounds and tunes that we will remember. We felt that it was a collaboration between us and Jon and not a vendor/ customer arrangement. His attitude was so positive even when certain aspects of the ceremony changed, he rolled with every step. Jon did not put himself into the production meaning he was not talking and making himself the center of attention (which we liked) and if there were one thing I could suggest it would be for him to be a little more assertive during the times when we needed instructions (since guests are not always listening), but overall he kept the focus on the music and the events going on. I was really worried about booking a DJ for our wedding. I had no idea what I was doing. The whole wedding planning process was so out of my comfort zone, and looking for a DJ was something I'd never done. I started my search on Yelp and stumbled across DJ Gatsby. I am so glad that I went with him. After one conversation I felt confident that he understood the type of wedding we wanted and felt like he was really knowledgeable about all genres of music. He was also fantastic with communication leading up to the wedding. He always presented himself with very approachable professionalism and was able to effectively communicate and coordinate via e-mail, which was a huge help to me. He laughed when I said "My dream wedding would be an all night Motown dance party". He delivered. The dance floor was full all night. People mentioned all night and days after how much they enjoyed the DJ. There were a lot of older people at our wedding and they appreciated him as much as everyone in their 20s-30s did. The biggest fear is that the DJ will be a dud and no one will dance- at our wedding, people were sore the next day from dancing their brains out. I also appreciated his vibe during all of the traditional toasts, cake cutting, father daughter dance, and announcements. Who knew that it was possible to not be corny or cheesy during these required wedding activities? He kept the banter minimal and there was ZERO cheesiness. Our wedding unfolded somewhat last minute and we hired him amidst the craziness of SXSW but he did a great job managing our requests. He wasnt cheesy like a few we ran into and had a focus on creating atmosphere through music rather than his presence as an MC, which was exactly what we were looking for. He provided us a list of music to choose from to help narrow down our preferences but was happy to take as much or as little of a lead as we wanted him to. We gave him some direction on what genres and artists we liked and any specific songs that were must plays, but ultimately trusted his expertise to choose the right song at the right time. One of the main reasons we hired Jon was that he is an actual DJ by trade who puts a focus on the music first and being an MC second. He also is one of the best at mixing in and out of songs, but knows how to read the room and will keep a good song going if it's a hit or transition out of one quicker if it's a flop. Jon was also very accommodating and creative as we had one specific request for him to do a "Jump Around" mastermix which he mixed in and out of 5 or 6 songs that all fell within the same theme and it was awesome!!! The icing on the cake was that even after Jon announced the last song of the night, he kept the party going as our wedding planner told him she needed a few more minutes to clear some cars for our grand exit. He took it in stride, had no complaints, and played a few more high energy songs that felt like an encore to all of us. We've run into Jon at some other events around Austin and he still remembers us, steps away from his booth and comes to say hi and catch up. Jon Simon p/k/a DJ Gatsby MADE my husband and I's wedding. Music/dancing was our number one priority, so we were very opinionated and focused on the DJ and set list. Well, Jon was more than we could have asked for. He met with us and our wedding planner prior to the wedding, and we discussed in detail our vision. We had many many specific likes and dislikes and Jon killed it. The dance floor was full the entire time, and the energy was beyond. Jon took our direction, yet made it his own and we could not be more happy. Further, my dad planned to play two songs on his acoustic guitar, and Jon went out of his way to make sure my dad had his soundcheck and various cords that were needed. Jon is not only a superb DJ, he is also incredibly professional and one of the most sincere people I've met. He is usually the first person I think of when looking for a DJ. I am always impressed by his ability to customize playlists to any setting or theme, and he is always a crowd pleaser. He is quick to respond to emails and happy to help brainstorm or work through the planning process. It is sadly uncommon to find someone who is not only excellent at their craft AND a pleasure to work with, but DJ Gatsby is the complete package. He is not only a go-to for events, but if I happen to see his is playing somewhere downtown, I love bringing some friends out to listen.
