VERY sad to write this update.... Yesterday was the 1st time I have been here since they changed their hours to weekends only. I used to love this place for lunch!! I was the only customer there. There where a few staff there not sure who was who and supposed to be in what role. The 1st pass through the line and most of the food was cold. The woman who eventually made her way to me to offer naan did not know what kinds they offered and had to go to the kitchen and check. Dirty plates remained on the table. By the time any naan came out I was almost finished 2nd plate of food. I had to refill my own water 3 times during the meal while the guy and girl working there carried on their own conversation uninterrupted by me. There seemed to be about 1/2 as many offerings on the buffet as used to be and what was there was just so-so. The Tandoori chicken looked like dried up scraps left over from yesterday, I didn't even bother trying it and that is one of my fav's! The price for this was more then ever before, it was $15.00 - had half the previous offerings, cold food and poor service. Never encountered any of this on prior visits. At no time during the meal did either of the staff inquire if everything was ok or not until it was time to pay. When the guy asked "was everything excellent?" I said, well, since you asked, no, it was quite bad and unsatisfactory actually. Explained all of the above to him and he acted surprised which after reading the prior reviews he was acting. Never the less, He did not offer to knock off a few $$ he simply said, oh, sorry to hear and they were moving to Virginia soon. I paid the $15, no tip and have no plan to return. Came here on Sunday night with my family for my Birthday. The Resturant was pretty empty. We ordered 5 dishes. Samosas, Chicken Tikkah, Channa Bhatura, Dal, and Saag which was accompanied by jasmine rice, Naan, and what looked like a fried naan. It was all delicious. The flavors were excellent. The staff was great. They were friendly and helpful when it came to explaining questions we had about any dishes. They even gave us dessert on the house when they found out it was my birthday! He directed me to select my menu items online through the catering portal and that he would call or email back with pricing in a few days. I filled out the catering information that same day, as directed and waited 2 weeks to hear nothing. I even called the location and left a message for a call back regarding this and was told he would call back that day. Several days have past and I have still heard nothing. Unexpected Pleasure! We are a small three-generational family and newly relocated to the area and were looking for some decent Indian fare. Reviews for all nearby Indian restaurants were modest at best so we chose the highest rated one. There were only a few customers at about 7:00 PM on Sunday night and we were a little worried, but their peak time for Sundays was shown as midafternoon. What a nice surprise! The restaurant was wonderfully clean, we were promptly greeted and seated with beverages ordered. We chatted with our server, Zameer, who made us feel like family. He helped us with a couple of our selections. He even gave our youngest member, a new driver, some fatherly driving advice! We ordered a number of appetizers and plates, including non-meat choices for one of our guests. The food came promptly. We sampled from each other's choices. The lamb was delicious, as were the veggie dumplings and especially the bendi masala. We had little pastry balls in a honey sauce for dessert. The food was mildly seasoned (I am sure you could have it spicier if you asked), but it was nonetheless less flavorful with a bit of pop. Everything tasted fresh and made to order. After being seated was served water, was not asked nor told about drinks available as part of buffet! Summoned waitress & asked about drinks, she confirmed the offer-our group of 3 ordered Lassis. Looked around & noticed that none of the others in the restaurant were served anything but water-they were clearly not informing the customers of the special. When my father went to get dessert, no spoons available when asked the manager told us we should have kept the tablespoon provided initially- that had already been cleared. He did bring fresh spoons & informed us spoons were added to the dessert table. Also flagged the owner who pointed to my used tablespoon still at the table & suggested the same but backed down when asked if it was appropriate to use the spoon used for savory dishes for dessert. The ownership, long time restauranteurs in the Washington DC area seem to be cutting corners & cheating customers. We ended our meal by ordering 2 teas. When the bill arrived we were charged for the tea & when asked about the charge, waitress informed us that drinks was not included with the buffet but will take it off the bill?????? Looks like the owner decided to increase the price from $15 to $20 but not offer the extras, may be after realizing that most of the customers were not aware of the special offer, decided not to inform the patrons. I have to say the interior was pretty nice. The service was not really top notch bit the owner was around making small talk and definetly trying to make everyones dining experience better. We ordered a ton of vegetarian food including the biryani, kati roll, paneer roll, pani ouri, paneer tikka, bhindi curry and paneer curry with naan. The food was very good and i was surprised at the kati roll transformation..definelty better and spicy and better veges. I wish they would use a flaky paratha rather than the tortilla though..but definetly a good kati roll..if youre not into soicy food make usre you let the waitress know to makenit mild. Overall it was a good dining experience...one of the better indian restraunts in the area for sure. Previous review: We ordered a vege kati roll coz we were excited to give this place a try though we had way too much food from another place allready. I went to try out this newly opened place. I like the menu offering as it allows one to have a lighter Indian lunch without having to go for the buffet (which invariably causes overeating). I went with a friend. I got the Kathi Roll (lamb), he got the Dahi Bhalla and we shared some Chicken Tikka. The Kathi Roll (lamb) was a big disappointment. Firstly, it was made in a whole wheat wrap (store bought). For an authentic Kathi Roll you expect either a Roomali Roti (Delhi Style) or a Tawa Laccha Paratha (Mumbai Style) but never an american wrap. Secondly and worse than the wrap it was drenched in oil and dripping all over. It was too messy for me to even take out my phone and take a picture. I'm just glad I didn't get it on my clothes. The Chicken Tikka was juicy and cooked well. However, the blend of spices was off. They did not get their spices mixed in the correct proportions. I can't say I enjoyed the flavors. Almost every Indian Restaurant gets this (spice blend) right, even when they can't cook it right or can't get the cut of meat right. I mean it's ready made in any store. My friend liked the Dahi Bhalla however and said it was very good. read more

I visited Diya this evening with a dear friend who is allergic to spicy food. We ordered the vegetarian thali, but it was still too spicy for her. The staff at Diya were incredibly kind. They prepared all-fresh items for my friend, free of the spices she needs to avoid, very rapidly. They really treated us both like royalty. It's so rare to get this level of personal service anywhere today. We were extremely impressed and can't wait to go back. On top of all that, as others have said, the food was really quite delicious. Also, I was charmed by the weird decor. Why shouldn't I enjoy some dal beneath giant antler chandeliers? I loved it. I really like the Veggie Thali. So awesome: variety, yummy, just enough food for a great price. They have a decent happy hour too. They have some Tikka dishes that are wonderfully prepared. Tucked away in the heart of the Kentlands is literally this hidden gem of a restaurant! Girlfriend had the vegetarian Thali. I had the non-vegetarian Thali, which I highly recommend. Thali is essentially a chef's tasting menu and takes the guess work out of deciding what to order. And it is apparently unlimited, although we were both full after our first respective plates. I regret not bringing my appetite, as I packed my stomach with as much as I could handle and am now in a food coma... The highlights: Lamb = 5/5. Delicious Butter Chicken = 4/5. Very good but not the best I have had in the area. Naan = 3/5. I am a very discriminating diner when it comes to naan. Had the plain naan. If I had the butter naan I may have rated higher. Lentils = 4/5 The house manager Golem and his staff were very attentive as well, no complaints. An overall fantastic experience and would go here again when the craving for Indian food hits! P.s. Interior is nice but the most under whelming Indian food experience I have had in a while. Chat station was not only under stocked but the chutneys were watered down with no taste. So we're all the gravies for all the non veg dishes. It's very hard to get butter chicken wrong but they did. The gravy was bland and the meat chewy. We have been catering our Diwali parties from Diya for several years and so it was this year as well. To say that the food was excellent is an understatement. The starters, freshly fried on the driveway, hit the right spot on a cold evening. The papdi chat was cool and tangy, the fish was fried perfectly, the samosas were very flavorful and the sheek and chicken Afghani Kabab was melt in our mouth tender. The veg and chicken biryani for the main course had perfect flavor and tempering. The chicken curry and dum aloo and naan went very well together. All this was brought together on our table by two very able and professional helpers. As host, all I did was to lay out the evening plan and timing for the starters and main course at the beginning of the party. After that, they took charge and made sure that everything flowed evenly. Very polite and respectful towards all the guests, they made sure that I did not have to worry about food and serving. What more can a host ask for? Great food. I was craving sarson ka saag so bad and it was one of the only places we could find that had it and was open. We were not disappointed. The sarson ka saag was authentic with the perfect makki ki roti. We also had a great paneer appetizer and paneer tikka masala. The roti and parathas were yummy too. Then I also had the best falooda I've ever had in my life... it wasn't on the menu but they gave it to us as special occasion dessert. The service was very nice and they took very good care of us. Tried this place for carry for the first time. Wow it is just amazing. Not only is the butter chicken fantastic but they way the pack everything is so professional. Sealed containers and then wrapped in platsoc wrap to make sure it doesn't leak or stink your car. The lollipop chicken appetizer is a must. Will def be getting food from here again read more

We decided last minute to grab some dinner in the Kentlands area, and decided to try out Diya. We ordered the crispy spinach appetizer, the butter chicken, and chicken vindaloo. Service was a little spotty - it was unclear whether the servers had assigned sections or they just served on a first-come-first-served situation. Our server seemed like she had a lot of tables, even though there were other servers walking around and the restaurant was more than half empty. The food was fine (no major complaints) but we have better (and cheap) Indian food closer to home. If you like a lot of tomato in your Indian food, you'd love Diya. I don't think we'll go out of our way to eat at Diya on a frequent basis, but we certainly won't avoid it either. read more

We came here for the lunch buffet. They had very limited vegetarian choices. They had only two veggie options Baingan Bharta and Sarson ka saag both of which were drenched in oil. They also had rice and daal. The rice was undercooked, grainy and greesy. The daal had no flavor. For such limited options, we had to fork out 16$ per head. My husband and I decided to give this play a try one day and we weren't disappointed. It's fairly new so the place is neat and clean. The servers are also very nice and accommodating. We had our 2 year old with us and they made sure that she was comfortable and made her feel really welcomed which was really nice since they didn't have to do that. We ordered the Butter Chicken and their special (I forgot what it was called, but it was a sampler of a couple of dishes), as well as naan. I liked the fact that you can request the spicy-ness level of some of the dishes. For example, butter chicken is usually not spicy which was good for our toddler, but my husband likes spicy stuff, so he ordered his spicy. We also tried the goat curry and that was really good. Ordered the brunch special which is listed as 20% off when over $25. Ordered chicken korma and dal makhni specials with a extra naan. When ordering person taking orders wasn't very welcoming. Went to pick up order and they said no 20% and it was last week only then why is it on your website. As for food the chicken korma has good flavor but the chicken was so tough and hard to eat and they forgot to give me a naan as well. Dal makhni and laccha paratha were pretty good. As for sujji is halwa it had some odd flavor and was not that good. Might give them a 2nd chance but hard to justify all the issues even if you are a new. The owner needs to provide feedback to this reviews which shows they care and willing to improve. I always support local businesses but they also need to make a more of effort as well. read more

My uncle found this quaint little Indian bistro behind the K-Mart in the Kentlands. I was trying to remember which failed restaurant was in this location previously. Then it occured to me that it was Dave's Famous. Yes, Diya is located in one of Kentland's infamous "death spots". I had zero expectations walking in here. I like Indian food in theory but the vast majority of desi restaurants are just terrible. And the all-over-the place Northern/Southern menu (chicken tikka, dosas, thali, lamb rogendosh, paneer etc.) did not inspire much confidence. So with the bar set to absolute zero, and a one star review already in my mind, I intentionally ordered a vegetarian thali platter. It came with naan bread, rice, paneer, daal, sambal and a yoghurt sauce. I've sampled these dishes previously and they are usually too over seasoned to be very edible. But to my amazement, everything was seasoned to perfection. The spice level was absolutely perfect. The bread was fresh and soft for dipping. I enjoyed every bite of it. Auntie ordered lamb rogendosh and it looked amazing though I declined to try it. The service was exemplary (perhaps almost uncomfortably so) but considering there was only two other tables in the place (on a Sunday night!) it should have been. The owner seems like a nice guy and visited our table a couple of different times. I genuinely feel bad that he is only allowed to post two signs to advertise. Because this restaurant is located in a horrible location. I really hope they do well because their food is exemplary for Indian cuisine. Check out Diya before it disappears. read more

This was the best Indian food I have had in a long time. I got the chicken vindaloo and my mother got the butter chicken. They both came with naan, which was nice that we didn't have to order/pay for it separately. I was curious to try the vindaloo since I heard the food here did not have any spice to it. I was pleasantly surprised to feel the heat build as I ate. My mother, who has always been hesitant to try Indian food, absolutely loved her butter chicken.
