I spoke with several diverse companies, got quotes from a few and finally narrowed it down to two companies, one a box store and the other Bay Area Floors. In evaluating the quotes and further interviewing both stores personnel during my final interviews I found the Project Manager, Mariela Guzman, with Bay Area, to be incredibly accurate, informed, and sincere in what she was offering as opposed to the "salesperson" at the box store. Having been in construction management prior to retiring, I felt that she was far better informed with what my project would require and backed by an extremely professional staff! Though the cost was a bit higher, I chose Mariela and her group over the others and have no regrets. I've enough experience in construction management and found that the tradesmen that did the work were better than any I'd dealt with in all my years in construction. During my construction career I was mainly responsible for QA and QC as well as the warranty department for most Companies I work with, and feel I'm in a position to say I found Bay Area Floors to be the best I'd ever worked with! Therefore I highly recommend Bay Area Floors and Mariela Guzman especially, for anyone's flooring needs!

Lee Smith - Drywall Doctor - Spent hours whittling around the outlet boxes resulting in too large an opening.

Drywall Doctor? More like Drywall Artist! Lee is absolutely amazing at repairing walls and making…read morethem look better than ever. When a contractor installed a fan and left us with a ceiling that looked like Frankenstein's monster, Lee came to the rescue and found a beautiful way to hide all the wires in the drywall - then he covered it all up so no one even knows it's there. Our house walls are a mix of various textures and styles, and Lee matched all of them for us. He's friendly, kind, and the best in town. I give him 5,000,000 stars!

Lee Smith has a great phone personality, if only his drywall installation could compare. I hired…read moreLee Smith to finish kitchen backsplash drywall which was removed for electrical before installing new countertops. I had more than half of it cut and in place and the other pieces more or less sized to the spaces. He showed up with a second person at 9:30 am, although I was expecting one person only, and he informed his hourly rate was $70 and his help was $60. They then proceeded to take one hour to unpack tools even though his truck was parked right outside the site near the garage entry. By 2:30 he had done almost nothing. By that time I had done quite a bit of work myself patching plugs in the ceiling, cutting 16" width around the breaker box, and replacing insulation behind the counters. I asked if he wanted to help with the insulation but he said he didn't have any gloves. He told me I had brought the wrong type of insulation so I had to show him the packaging and explain it was mineral wool. He did put a few pieces on an interior wall that is open to the next room, which I next explained would not be necessary. They did not use the tools they took out aside from mainly razor knives they used to whittle away around the outlets I had intentionally undercut so the outlets could easily be found to size the openings perfectly. They did not seem familiar with the tools I was using. Then when I pointed out the drywall was supposed to have been cut flush to the box so the metal tabs could hold the outlets tight against the drywall, they said "Oh, those are Mickey Mouse ears, some contractors cut them off!" They also let the piece of drywall fall behind the counter instead of holding it up to the base of the cabinets, leaving a gap, and resulting in the outlet box being overcut. Le assured me all the gaps would be taped and would fill in nicely with hot mud, but I couldn't tell by when that was ever going to happen, and where did all the gaps come from anyways? I had already cut the drywall without any gaps. It took them so long to cut out around the outlets so why was the drywall damaged around the outlets? Lee mentioned in passing he was a licensed contractor but he never presented a card with a license number. He has not responded to my text requesting his license number. At 2:30 pm I requested that they leave.

It is of the highest quality and met my needs in every way, it gets my highest possible rating. David knows what he is doing and really cares about getting it right. Full marks, pass with distinction!! David's passion, care and expertise were apparent from the very moment we met him. He was recommended to us by our general contractor, Michal Gerard, and we agreed to meet him at a local tile store on Chanticleer, for a preliminary discussion. At that time, my wife and I had not reached consensus on the work that we wanted to have done in the house, except that we knew we wanted to add a shower to the half bathroom, downstairs in our house. Meeting David was the pivot, the causal link in what was to come. At our first meeting, he proved to be a wonderful teacher, a thoughtful and caring guide. In half an hour at a table in the back of the tile store, he took us through an exemplary process of construction decision-making and the aesthetics of shower addition and tiling. He had a well-honed system in place, leading us gently through each step of the decision-making process, offering a range of options - and expanding them -- at each step, until he had helped us reach consensus (not an easy task!). Wall tiles for the shower and bathroom, floor tiles, edge tiles, a pebble surface for the shower floor, an aesthetic glass-tile insert into the shower wall that simulates a waterfall, and so on ... it was truly amazing to be a participant in his process and see how carefully he led the way! David has a quiet manner and a sense of artistry that is unmatched in others. Plus, we really enjoyed his process ... enjoyed him and left feeling good that we were both on the same page and that we were in the hands of an expert. These same feelings persisted throughout the entire job, from inception to closure. David was with us every step of the way, doing the work and guiding his team member, Juan. Consulting, checking, seeking feedback, ensuring quality was built into the work and making sure we understood what was going on, every day. The quality that ended up on the surface of the job was matched by the quality of what was to be eventually concealed beneath it. The care that David and Juan took, at each of these steps, was extraordinary ... the thought and planning that went into laying out the layers of structure, water-proofing and paneling, to the skimming of the floor and walls with thin-set, and eventually to the planning of tile layout and its application. Perfectly smooth, perfectly level and plumb. Secure, strong and beautiful. The importance of each step became more apparent to me, as I listened surreptitiously to the work-time conversations between David and Juan. They were master and apprentice, guide and guided - this was constructivism in action, questions raised and answered, alternatives proposed and discussed. Care expressed at every turn, before action was set in stone. Each interaction was like a graduate seminar in artistry, design and tilework. I wish I had taken a video of the entire process, it would have been invaluable! More than his professionalism and artistry, though, David is also a fine and decent man. We loved having him and his team-member, Juan, in our home each morning till the work was complete. We loved receiving his texts and phone calls, responding to his questions and choosing among the options he presented and guided us through, walking with him through the work as it progressed. And now, we enjoy the results of his work - and the warmth of his caring -- every morning, when we step into the shower and turn it on. Thank you, David, you are a local treasure!
