The Chili/Cheese sandwich!!!! It's literally a hotdog bun with chili & cheese...that's it...nothing else. And it was freakin' awesome! I was staying in Covington, KY just across the Ohio River for the Reds v Giants series, and while I really wanted the taste of Cincinnati, the joint was suggested to me by a local. Being that Cincinnati is located right on the (river) state border of KY/OH, then you can understand how the cincy-influence bleeds over into the local KY towns of Covington/Newport/Florence. Anyway, small joint, which I absolutely love! Yes, I do love Skyline, but to get even more "local", this is your spot. Customers service was great. They are nice folks, but they understandably very business-driven, so they're a tad bit direct. But again, due to their pace, they have to be, so no sweat. I got the Waffle Fries Chili/Cheese too and they were also awesome. Waffle fries are my favorite. Bottom line-I came to see my Reds play, but wanted some taste of local cuisine and Dixie Chili really came through, so cannot thank them enough for adding to the overall value of my solo trip to Cincinnati. read more

I've probably driven by this place 5,000 times and had never stopped in. Chili Week got us there, lured by the gyro coneys. The staff was very friendly to us first timers, we learned quickly that you order at the counter. I had the alligator, which is a coney with a pickle, and it was awesome. I also had the Greek salad, which was an impressive size and very fresh. I got to have a bite of the regular coney and the gyro coney, both really good. The dining room was clean and well kept. Better then Skyline only because they offer a variety of other dishes. Atmosphere is similar, small quaint diner that reminds me of Dennys. Chili reminded of Skyline, not better and not worse. Consistently good food and service for 20+ years. The history of old Newport and one of the surviving businesses that outlasted the "Sin City" era. Great nostalgia, and we like it better than the two more popular chili chains. I often get the DIXIE DELIGHT a mixed salad plate with a mix of choices of egg,ham, chicken, or tuna salad with fresh fruit. The chili and dogs are great (Tiki usually gets an Allie-gator dog with pickles). Not unusual for us to also get a gyro platter or soup bowl. We both enjoy their own brand of hot sauce, and when available, buy some for home. History says this will likely outlast everything on Monmouth. read more

I love chili mac! I love Cincinnati/Greek style chili! I love indie restaurants and small chains! I love beer! So, why would I not love this Dixie Chili parlor in Covington, KY? If you like the more famous Skyline Chili, there's a pretty good chance you'll like Dixie, too. Although the spicing is slightly different, the real difference is that Dixie is meatier, and thus, not as runny as Skyline (or Goldstar, for that matter). And listen, when you're talking about chili, more meat is always better! Just one of many cool difference between Dixie and the other brands is that Dixie parlors also offers a "6 way." In chili mac lingo, a 6-way is a 5-way, plus chopped garlic. I've tried this once. It was good. It was different. I think, however, that the garlic overpowered the delicate flavor of the chili a little too much. I'll stick to my classic 4-way. (5-way has beans...too much bloating and flatus.) Dixie Chili is also available at super markets, or via the internet, in 10 ounce cans. You can also buy a case or two to take home, at any of the three Dixie Chili parlors in Northern Kentucky. What? You're trying to stay in shape, so you can't eat chili? Au contraire!! As it turns out, Dixie chili, at least in terms of macro-nutrients, is actually pretty damned healthy!! Ten ounces (two servings) of Dixie have 30 grams of protein, only 10 grams of fat, and only 10 grams of carbohydrates. That's better than most protein bars, and, chili tastes about a hundred times better!! The beer selection in the parlors isn't big, but at least it's there. This place is a huge hit with my family. I placed an order through DoorDash for pickup. the order was not ready when I arrived but once I pulled around to the window my greek salad was substituted for a fruit plate. I advised I did not want a fruit plate, that is not comparable to a salad. I was told I had to take it since it was paid for. no alternate solutions or anything. I asked if I could get a credit for a salad once their lettuce arrived and was told no. They did nothing to attempt to make this right for me. Not bad at all! I wasn't in the mood for chili or any combination thereof, so I was pleasantly surprised that they had options at this drive-thru and eat-in site. I chose the turkey sandwich on wheat bread, accompanied by lettuce, tomato and mustard/mayo. Very impressive sandwich with two pickle spears and a bag of Husman's potato chips. The service wasn't speedy by any means, but hey, it was 10:45 a.m. and I was asking for lunch. Took my debit card and the employee at the window was very patient, in fact, super sweet as I added an unsweetened tea at the window! There is a variety of food on the menu and we can see how this is a fan favorite to the locals that grew up eating this chili. We tried it for the experience, it just wasn't a favorite of ours. Can you be in love with a restaurant? Because I definitely have feelings for This one! Some may hold a love for skyline or goldstar or some other Cincinnati chili parlor, but me, my heart is in dixie...Dixie Chili that is. The best version of chili in Cincinnati is across the river in Kentucky. They have several locations and all are quite lovely, but my favorite is the Covington location. First of all, before we get to the food, the place is spotless, and the staff is friendly. Giant windows allow the retro inspired diner space to be flooded with natural light and a choice of tables or booths (I always opt for a booth) allow you plenty of space to dine solo or in a group. Two tvs mark one wall, usually on a news or sports channel, depending on whats going on, and a giant juke box is available for your listening pleasure. The menu includes the usual chili parlor suspects, coneys, 3-ways, etc. Dixie Chili also offers gyros, salads, deli meat sandwiches, chicken tenders, soups and waffle fries (also the usuals at some other non chain parlors, but not available at Skyline ) This particular location is on my way home from work, about a 2 mile walk, and it often serves as my reward. The salads they offer are my favorite. Nothing fancy, no frilly lettuces or trendy veggies, just good, fresh ingredients. I order the garden salad and add gyro meat and feta cheese (yes, as my husband always points out, I could just order a greek salad, but the garden salad includes purple cabbage & carrots, while the greek offers neither of those things, including instead, banana peppers and olives), with the creamy greek dressing. Divine. Another aspect that makes my heart happy are their beverage choices, coke products (including FOUNTAIN CHERRY COKE!), really good iced tea and also a small beer selection. I would give this restaurant a five star except for the fact that it is seriously not wheelchair accessible. The main entrance is a "bank entrance" that is unusable if you are in a chair. The "accessible entrance" runs straight into the path of the drive through. I wish that they would upgrade the doors so that everyone could appreciate their wonderful food. read more

Dixie Chili has the best chili in Cincinnati. That said, the Covington location is constantly and consistently a disappointment. Whether it's cold chili, 2 tablespoons of cheese for a SUPER 4 way, or forgetting items, the Covington location is an embarrassment for the brand. Wonderful food with exceptional service, priced very reasonably. If that is not enough, the atmosphere is a combination of "contemporary retro" - very clean and very cool. It reminds me of what Covington must have been like in the 1950's. Maybe a place where my Mother may have been taken on a date for a coney and a rootbeer float. Where the service comes with a smile and all the Servers call you "Sweetheart" (even when the customer is clearly 20 years their senior). Located on the boarder of Covington and Latonia (across from Holmes High School), believe me, it is worth the extra 10 minutes drive south of downtown Cincinnati. read more

I love that this chili place has waffle fries. No other chili place around has that kind of fry. The other thing I love about this restaurant is that is has a old time feel. On another note the service at this place is horrible. The owner is very rude and sarcastic. She talks about you (like a child) when you are right by her. Dixie Chili is yet another take on Cincinnati chili - Nky style. The chili is meatier than Skyline, for those who don't like the thin consistency of Skyline might really like Dixie. The coneys also are slightly larger than Skyline/Goldstar. Good flavor to the chili - this Madison location is even now serving limited beer if you feel so inclined to enjoy a cheap domestic with your 3 way. The best chili place in Cincinnati I have found so far. Cincinnati chili could use some option of beans as does Dixie Chili but it has kick with a sweet aftertaste. Wish cheese wasn't extra but I much prefer the customer service to other Cincy chili places that aren't clean and rush you to the check. They have excellent soda and drink selection so it's more than just chili. My favorite was the waffle fries topped with feta and greek vinagrette, so basically it was a frenxh fry salad! I was in the Cincinnati/Covington area recently. I and a few of my friends decided to do a chili taste test. For my liking, your's came out a close second to Covington chili. Your's is slightly hotter than Covington's, but well within my comfortable slightly hot range. Yours had a slight bitter aftertaste, probably a little to much cumin, but still very tasty. I would rate you 2 to 3 stars above the other chain chili places and nearly equal with Covington's. If I had more time, I would have searched out more places to compare chili from the area. I never would have thought this area was known for its chili, but since I was told this, I had to try it. I was also told that you either like it or you don't. Choose for yourself, don't knock it till you have tried it. I can't rate any above 4 stars until I have tried them all. read more
