This place is truly one of my favorite spots for Indian food. The portions are always plentiful, flavorful, and consistently delicious every single time. Their butter chicken is absolutely out of this world;rich, comforting, and packed with incredible flavor. I also LOVE their naan, whether it's plain or garlic. It's always fresh, warm, and the perfect addition to every meal. Honestly, even when I'm not dining in, I'm constantly ordering takeout because the food is just that good. There's something so comforting and soulful about their cooking; it really feels like Indian soul food in the best possible way. My daughter made a reservation for6:30 pm for Mother's Day when we got there the guy at the front desk looks so confused he just asked us to wait did not asked for the name on the reservation we then ask one of the ladies that we had a reservation so she told us to wait since people are just leaving in the meantime she seated 5 people that had no reservations when we asked her why we're waiting she told us they have a table for eight so she gave the table to the 5 people who had no reservations. After we got seated we waited almost an hour for our food to come one of the appetizer that we ordered was not even served Since we were hungry at this point we just proceeded to eat the main course at this point this is when my husband found a hair on the rice we called the waitress and she didn't apologize but just took the plate and replaced it with an empty plate so we called one of the male waiter and explained that there was a hair on the rice he asked if we wanted another rice of course we said we want the rice replaced but he didn't even offer to replace the lamb that was on the rice with the hair all of us we're examining every dish if there was a hair on it It was a terrible feeling to eat like this. We all ate very little and lost our appetite but the worst is nothing was offered in place of the lamb that was taken away a reputable restaurant will be apologetic and offer some discount or kind of at least replaced the lamb dish . We would never return here again they don't care about their customers. Then we found out they were featured in kitchen nightmare by Gordon Ramsay in Hulu season 2024 . We came here for Thanksgiving and the food was good! We love Indian so got a vegetarian appetizer sampler, lamb vindaloo, gobi, dahl, spinach paneer, okra, chicken masala, briyani, garlic naan, chai, mango lassi. Was too hungry so only took a few pics of food. Ambiance is beautiful. Too bad it's dark otherwise would have water views. They did have the fireplace going so super nice. After being a loyal customer for many years of Diwan in Hicksville I decided to give this original location a try. Also seeing it on tv with Gordon Ramsey helping improve it also was inspirational. Ordered: chicken tikka Daal makhani Lahori chicken curry Saag paneer Onion kulcha Garlic naan None of these dishes left me wanting in anything (other than a touch of salt but that's a personal preference). Flavors are beautifully developed in each sauce. The lahori curry is such a unique curry with a surprisingly pronounce tingle of ginger mixed with delicious warm spices. I think I found a new curry to fall in love with! Staff were very friendly. I believe I did run into the owner, who was very kind. I wasn't ready to thank him for his contributions to the food world just yet as I hadn't tried his food yet but now that I have. I bow to the man who put this together. Prices are up there. Location is on the water almost and looks great. Walk in and smell the cuisine. I highly recommend stopping by. Even get dishes from here and Hicksville and compare side by side! We have been dedicated to Diwan for more than 25 years. Chef Bobby makes the most delicious variety of sauces for each dish. We have celebrated a hundred birthdays there, big party and small. This restaurant and service never disappoint. Start with the samosa chat. Tandoori chicken more tender than you can imagine, onion kulcha, buttered naan, lamb vindaloo, my vegetarian brother gets vegetable dishes and my other brother gets the goat dish which is divine. I came here quite a few years ago on my way driving from Boston back to Chicago via NYC and a visit to Long Island to pick up a couple from my college days who lived in Oyster Bay (I loved the name, but we didn't get any oysters unfortunately). I love Indian food and one of my Oyster Bay pals (she was a vegetarian) who was driving back with us had been to Diwan before and said that the menu was big and the the food here was good. So we came here. I was not disappointed by the food, but I suffered a surprise left-hook by the prices. My usual Indian-food go-to is the $12 AYCE lunch buffet, which usually has everything I crave most at literally 1/4 the price of the same items at dinner. And I hate over priced places, just hate them. And DIWAN WAS SERIOUSLY OVERPRICED. But I didn't want to be a kill-joy, and my friends recommended it so - go with the flow. But the prices meant that we shared a lot of the dishes, and ate less than we wanted to. We started with Papadum, Potato & Pea Samosas, and some fried cauliflower Pakora, all with your typical green and tamarind chutneys. For our shared mains we ordered Butter Chicken, Matter Paneer, Lamb Vindaloo (because I got a nose-bleed once from it due to how hot it was), Masala Dosa, and Curried Fish (I wanted heads but Diwan didn't offer them). We ordered a few other things like Dal and mango chutney, but I can't remember which others. The service was fine and our waiter was very nice. The food really didn't take that long to arrive either. My friends all got Mango Lassis to drink, while I had my standard Masala Tea. The restaurant was decorated nicely and the ambiance was very "Indian" in nature, although I would have liked better music, like a selection of soothing Ragas and some nice Tabla drums and sitar. But no restaurant play traditional music in the background anymore. But the view through the windows was lovely. Overall, after the sticker-shock when the bill came. However, to my relief, my rich Long Island friend picked up the tab. So, the experience was a good one. read more

I've been craving Indian food for a while. We were in the area and tried Diwan and loved it! Best Indian I've had in a very long time. I haven't "tried all the others" and I've never traveled through the sub continent nor do I have an Indian relative that makes THE BEST vindaloo... The food here is really good, and they're very knowledgeable about what's in it as far as allergens. I loved it the two times we went, but I wish they had more items I could eat. I love Indian food, but so much of it is made with butter, flour, yogurt and cheese that it's hard for me to eat too much there. I don't know why they can't make GF naan, for instance. There are many good substitutes nowadays for the ingredients I just mentioned, so you could make, say, tandoori chicken with vegan yogurt. I'm sure they would get more diners if they added some additional allergen-friendly foods. It's not a buffet. Everything's made to order. Advice: don't go on a weekend unless it's summer time because it gets too busy and crowded (that's true of most restaurants in Port). I'm sure we'll go back, though, because there aren't a lot of choices around here for great Indian food, even though this is very expensive. I would take a half star off for the prices and the lack of GF and DF food if I could. read more

Excellent food. I visited this restaurant with some friends after learning that it was featured in an episode of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. Having eaten sub-par Indian food almost everywhere I went since leaving India, my expectations were low walking into Diwan. I am pleased to note, however, that Diwan has served me the best and most authentic Indian food I have had since moving out of India four years ago, and I am so glad it's within commutable distance to where I live. Ambiance was also good, and the servers knowledgeable (we had a vegan in our group and the server knew what was and was not vegan). The food was a bit expensive, even for an Indian restaurant- but my god was it worth it. Highly recommend this place, and it is rare that I recommend an Indian restaurant outside of India! read more

I've been for dinner a couple times over the years and recently went for lunch with a few friends. Their service is excellent; very friendly employees! Comfortable seating and atmosphere. They have an excellent selection on the menu, including some nice appetizers to share. We all shared an order of garlic naan which was okay but on the dry side and could have used even more garlic. I can provide credit card receipts and proof that my wife and I have eaten at this restaurant, several times and over several iterations, couple of years back they tried a Mexican concept as part of their location, believe it or not. We find this restaurant to be a barely passable attempt at Indian food with REALLY crap service in a lovely location. For dinner it is also way overpriced in our opinion. Do you know the feeling of craving for Indian food? Then you eat here and it leaves you pissed off angry, overcharged and unhappy. The food is just not that good, but the problem is also with the angry waitstaff and the general attitude. About the only place that comes to mind when you need an Indian restaurant that has good food and is fancy and serves meat (not for this vegetarian but for the rest of the party) and alcohol. Prices are decent for a fancy restaurant, will seem expensive compared to your typical Indian takeout. They will make food extremely mild for folks like my mom who can't handle spice, but can also make it as spicy as you'd expect in Hicksville (where they have a much less fancy location with a great lunch buffet), Jackson Heights or Bellerose. Really wish I could give this place five stars. Some nights are better than others but last night my tandori chicken was mediocre, at best. I actually threw half of it out. I don't know how you can do tandori wrong. My husband liked his chicken tikka masala. The onion kulcha was okay -- not the greatest, a little soggy. We've been coming here literally for decades. It's always a gamble. Not sure what's going on because the last time it was pretty good. I get the feeling the internal politics of this place is going to be the end of it. read more

Came here to eat lunch with co-workers on a Friday noon. We ate buffet. The food was ok. The variety was very little as it consisted of rice, chicken, vegetable, spinach, curry, yogurt, etc. I believe it was only a dozen of choices available. I had better Indian food elsewhere.
