Be prepared to be ripped off if you come here. I had a dress that I needed altered for a wedding - mind you it was a $5 dress I got from a flea market. I needed a simple hem so it didn't touch the floor when I wore it. I came in with the dress and the person working the counter was friendly enough - he pinned it up in about 5 minutes and I was feeling hopeful that this would be a good service. However, the lady working the register quoted me $180 for hemming. She said it was a fancy gown with three layers of fabric apparently, each hem was $60. I left appalled and I didn't know what to do - so I quickly called around and got a better quote for $90 at a different shop. When I called asking about the price, he said it was a very complex job that required special steam pressing to complete the job. After some negotiations, he said the best price was $150 and he'll throw in streaming for free. I ended up refusing the service and picking up the dress, after which he even tried to charge a consultation fee for 5 minutes of his time (even though he wasted over 30 minutes of my time). Go here if you want your pennies pinched, but I would avoid this place at all costs. read more

They never hassle us to hurry up and pick up our clothes. And they have always helped fix anything we asked for -- even repairing my Japanese cloth slippers (my nuno zori) which had started to tear! This was several months ago when I dropped off my suit and dress shirt to have it dry cleaned before a wedding. Was told it'll be ready to pick it up on Thursday but i came in on a Saturday the day before the wedding. They said it won't be ready until Monday! It was unfortunate that nothing can be done. I had a backup suit that wasn't my first choice. It was very disappointing. Otherwise they dry clean quality is like any other cleaners so not coming back here in the future. The service here has really declined over the past couple years. Not only have the prices gone up drastically, but the hours of operation are reduced and even when open there is often no one there. Just today I saw one of the owner's sons when trying (for the 3rd time today) to pick up/drop off laundry. He walked into the back room and did not come back out. 5 minutes later, after YELLING out for him, I left. I've come here for multiple alterations and he always takes the time to figure out every little detail that needs to be done- no shortcuts whatsoever. I have been going to Divisadero Heights Cleaners for several years now and they always have done a great job. Unfortunately, I brought my wedding dress in and the silk is ruined. They told me I shouldn't expect it to look brand new -- but it's completely dull and worn down. I reached out to my dress designer who said this shouldn't have happened and they must be using too harsh of chemicals. I'm extremely disappointed. I went back visibly distraught and they made me feel like I was being crazy. I was not refunded. I will not be going back here, which is sad because every other experience I've had was positive. Moral of the story: don't bring anything expensive or of high value to be cleaned here. read more

I found this place after scouring the net lo and behold, this shop stayed open. Due to my wedding being postponed to Friday, I had to rush since I didn't get notified until last minute. I had gained some weight (lol) and no way to lose it within 72 hours so I came in to get fitted and hopefully get the needed fabric added in so I could breathe before the wedding night. Highly recommend this place. Their tailoring dept handled a particularly tricky dress resizing alteration with care and the end results were flawless. I brought in a vintage designer dress that needed to be resized to be a size larger. It has lots of sentimental value and the tailoring dept measured and re-pinned the dress multiple times to fit it perfectly to my frame. As an artist myself, the care and craftsmanship this place puts into maintaining the integrity of garments is really impressive. This place is a classical if not traditional tailor, and I have to say, they did a great job on my Gowns. I had visited my best friend since i haven't seen her throughout this whole pandemic and realized that I had a bunch of stuff that I had bought a while back and didn't fit me since I last changed careers. I had asked her if she knew a place she trusted since my stuff costed me a fortune and I couldn't risk ruining them. She recommended this place despite the business looking a bit dated as she had brought stuff to them before and the workmanship looked superb. I brought in some of my stuff to be dry cleaned as I sometimes have to work from home now. I had a few items to be drycleaned and a few items for tailoring. The drycleaning wasn't that bad as I had food stains on a sweater and dirt stains on my sweatpants but the alterations needed some adjustments as I had lost weight despite so many people gaining from the stay at home orders. Two of my louis vuitton dresses needed to be taken in at the back while my two gowns were too long and wide shouldered and had to be sewn back on at the waist. These were tricky, and told so when I visited the place. The lady behind the counter was named Kome as other yelpers had called her and mentioned that despite the drycleaning being standard and easy, the alterations were not. The Seamstress explained in detail as i tried them on how both of the dresses which did not accentuate my figure had to be almost redone. One had so much sequin and lace that it was multi layered and any small adjustment meant that each layer had to be separated and readjusted, the other was a embroidery tulle sheath dress that was still in its box had so much embroidery that looked like a crystal chandelier was in the way of working the back as the sewing machine needles could break if not carefully resewn. For the Mac Duggal gowns, the seamstress found that the armpits and shoulders were way too wide while the length of the bottom hems had to be redone. Pretty much all the stuff I needed had to be resized and Kome gave me some pointers on what to order and look for so I didn't make the same mistake again when shopping in stores for new clothes. When i came back two weeks later, i tried on my items that needed alterations and christ they all fit! I looked into the mirror and instead of looking like a fourteen year old girl trying on her mom's clothes, I finally looked like a grown woman with my bust, butt, and hips accentuated and not too tight either. I even had my best friend evaluate the results and even she knew Kome had an eye for quality work. I'd just wish I stayed longer as my old drycleaning place couldn't even shorten a hem let alone properly fix a button! The place seems busy when i came in to pick up my stuff, which I take as a good sign and I would not hesitate to recommend Divisadero Height Cleaners if you want it done right - they seem to be able to handle in the way of alterations ( I saw people getting jeans and jackets altered while I was waiting in line). I've learned that Tailoring isn't something to be taken for granted. read more

I had to get a bridesmaid dress shortened, and Andy was so professional and thorough with making sure that the dress was properly hemmed on all sides. He was able to work with my timeline, and it fit perfectly on the big day! This was the first time I've ever gotten a dress tr to me in my adult life and I'm very glad I went here. I got a dress for my birthday and unfortunately it was like 5 sizes too big. This is an extremely honest business, almost to their detriment. I brought in two dresses, both about three sizes to large for me. Once we pinned them and he explained the costs, the employee asked if I had just considered finding the dress in the correct size from a second hand retail site. Sure enough, I found it for same online at a steep discount, much cheaper than the extensive alterations required. This was the opposite of a sales pitch. The employee encouraged me to go home and think whether or not I was committed to the alterations in order to avoid "buyer's remorse." Rare to find a business this honest. I use to live half a block away and I fully took advantage of all the amazing services they offer- like affordable wash and fold, flawless patching and restoring my favorite vintage jeans. I bought a women's wool long coat form Long Tall Sally that fit my shoulders well but was baggy pretty much everywhere else. After using this place for dry cleaning, I asked about getting things tailored here. When I came to pick up me items, I got them to tailor the coat here on a rush for a wedding. They had me put on the coat, and they pinned it up for me with some suggested alterations. They did a great job being transparent about what was possible given the time and also the coat itself. They quoted me 3 days somewhere around $150. Without a rush it was something more like $80-100. Next day, they confirmed a $160 price and started working. Apparently it took one seamstress an entire 9-5 day to get the bulk of it done. They had me come back to check the fit. Things looked good, so they finished up the lining, the buttons, got it pressed, and returned it to me a day early in fact. For the result and complexity of the item, the price was fair. That being said, I have gotten clothing made from scratch before in India, and I will say that alterations on an existing item only get you so far. For example, going into it we knew we had to sacrifice some button functionality given the time constraint and the difficulty/risk associated with trying to lift the entire sleeve at the shoulder. However, clothing from scratch in the US is expensive, and it just doesn't justify me using it unless for exceptionally important circumstances. I'm happy to live so close to this option. Normally, I hesitate buying clothing knowing it won't fit, and I have to return large amounts of it cause my body is so finicky. I think I can broaden my horizons a bit on what clothing is possible for me now! read more

I've had to shop through several tailors over the last couple years, and this is the first and only place that has taken the time to understand what I'm looking for, what I want done, and ensuring the best of quality each and every time. Being queer or genderfluid in the Bay Area means you need a good tailor. If you know, you know, and you'll know that not every tailor gets it, or understands what you're trying to do. If what I am asking isn't quite feasible, they take the time to politely explain why in ways that are clear and easily understood, and then they brainstorm with me about alternatives. We typically get our dry cleaning done at Divisadero Heights Cleaners (DHC) and they do a fantastic job, however we had never before used them for tailoring. WOW!! I HIGHLY recommend you get your tailoring done here. My husband and I had a mixed Hindu and western-style wedding and I needed some of the Indian clothing items tailored that we had gotten made in India. Before DHC worked their magic, the items were a disaster - seriously. We're talking uneven cuts on either side of the top, literally the cups were in my armpits when I tried the top on. The part of the top around my rib cage was tight while the other parts were super big. DHC worked some MAGIC I tell you. They had me come in a couple times so they could get everything just right. After the first fitting once they tried altering and realized the sizing was all wrong, they had me come back and literally try on the tops, hand them over, take down appropriate notes, and put it back on over and over until they could get it perfect. When it came to the wedding weekend, my Indian mother-in-law had NO idea how messed up the clothes came. She was raving to the person that made them in India how gorgeous I looked and it wasn't until I told her later about the headache in tailoring that she found out and was shocked. Last week, I found out my drycleaner down the block is still closed and has not been opened for over 2 months. Came here to drop off my sweaters which have kept me me warm since my apartment is in the sublevels. All the lotion I used turned my favorite sweaters into something that isn't even acceptable for the freaking homeless! The lady behind the counter didn't even flinch at the sight of them just to hand me my receipt. Came back today and holy hell, bought them back to life and one of them I can see the white color again after wearing that same sweater for the past month straight! At this visit they gave me shat i consider a reasonable price. They called me back a few days later for another fitting to double check all the layers. They said my dresses would be ready in about 1.5 months due to all the summer wedding business; 3 weeks later they were done! Not only are my dresses at the perfect length and flowing beautifully, but the fixed the zipper and added a little room at the waist as a courtesy without charging me more. The owner Kome is such a great seamstress! I was in need of an alteration for two of my dresses in such short notice and she was able to accommodate me and my needs beyond what I asked. I am 5'3 and most of the elegant gowns always run a bit long on me. I took the two dresses I had after reading some reviews on yelp and decided to give her a try. She is very nice and explained how the work will be done and why (in case any of the material/fabric of the dress needs special handling). She made them readily available the next week! She hemmed them very nicely and they looked just as if I had bought them as is without any alterations had been done on them. What I loved most about one of my dresses (blue velvet dress) was that she incorporated a short tail after hemming it, which she had asked me about first and it made the dress so much better looking. In which I ended choosing because of the event I went to had nearly all dresses styled similar and I had to follow it when going. Her prices are reasonable especially for the difficulty in material of the dresses that were given and the style they had (mine were mermaid styles). I absolutely love her work and how they were altered. I will definitely be back since I'm always in need of hemming most of my long dresses due to my short height and she is very knowledgeable and has level of confidence you can depend on.
