Lola was our main guide and not only was she well educated, attentive, and a great tour guide -- she also would go above and beyond to make your tour incredible. None of the other guides from other companies got off their boards, let alone free dove 40ft to try to get the reef shark to leave its rock so everyone could see it. She also provided many of our crew with their own free dive instruction so that they could try as well. Amazing trip, amazing sights, even better crew!

Both our boys got seasick by the big swells we experienced. Ulu (captain) and crew were very accommodating and helpful the whole trip. We even went to see Ulu play music at a local restaurant a day later. Overall it was a great experience.

I hardly write reviews but their considerate and meticulous service made for an unforgettable experience. Many companies offer discover scuba lessons in Oahu so I called a few to understand the itinerary before making a decision. I spoke with Toby, he welcomed all questions and gave an honest glimpse of what the experience would be. He was also courteous enough to let me know that they might reschedule our reservation in case they don't have enough people to meet a minimum for the boat. This did happen but the company let me know this promptly well in advance and even followed up to remind me about completing e-learnings etc. Fast forward to the day of the scuba and my mother & I met with Toby and the captain on Diamond T II, their boat along ala moana. The captain did a quick lay down of the safety instructions and Toby walked us through the nuts and bolts of diving - key skills, sign language, etc. The crew split us into parties of two each. The sea was a little choppy and I was feeling a little sea sick so I asked the cap if I go jump in the water till the first pair finished their training and dive and he even gave me snorkeling gear!! This was a great way to kill time and also get a preview of the dive ahead. The cap also encouraged my mother to join me and despite her fear of water, she felt at ease in doing so. This half an hour was unexpectedly enjoyable as we were able to interact with some marine life and my mother felt more comfortable being in water. We then got into our gear, which was labeled, super clean and hygienic, and proceeded to do our training session with Toby in the water. This was the highlight of our experience as jumping in a water can be pretty daunting with heavy gear, especially if you run into tricky problems like water in the mask or your regulator. Despite my mother running into these frequently, Toby was incredibly patient and relentlessly made an effort to do her skill training without rushing her. Unfortunately, she was feeling pretty sea sick and also tired by her time in the water so she decided to pause but Toby and I carried on into the water. We spent a serious amount of time close to the ocean bed, Toby was alert yet let me free roam in the water so I gained some confidence too. I was surprised by how clear the water was and we saw plenty of fish, it was magical. On returning, I found out that my mother got sick on the boat so the cap helped her with a pair of goggles, some jelly, and light humor to alleviate her motion sickness. The crew was highly aware of most passengers feeling sick so they expedited our return to the waterfront. I fail to see how this experience could've been more enjoyable and how this crew could've been more considerate to first time divers. Thank you so much for this!!

I have been a PADI certified diver for over 25 years. For the first time in all these years, I am…read morewriting a bad review about a PADI Dive Shop. At the end of this month, I am traveling to Honolulu, Hawaii with my wife and five-year-old daughter for vacation. I reached out to "Aloha Scuba Diving Company" (www.divealohascuba.com) a PADI 5-star IDC, inquiring about their dives. We exchanged about 10 emails, where they offered me to do a Wreck Certification. In those emails, we went over the dates, time requirement per day, dives, and cost, among other details. After a lot of negotiation with my family, they allowed me to step away from our time together, to go diving for a couple days. Based on the information Aloha Scuba Diving Company provided in those emails, I coordinated with my wife and scheduled the rest of our vacation (booking activities with my family, rather than going scuba diving by myself). After booking the rest of the activities in our vacation, I emailed Aloha Scuba Diving Company and they asked me to call the shop to make the payment and confirm the booking. Yesterday, I called the shop, and they took my credit card to confirm the booking. After the call, I received emails confirming the booking and notifications from the credit card company confirming the charge. The first thing that happened was that they overcharged my credit card compared to the price they quoted me on the emails (even when during the call I pointed to the specific email with the price they had quoted). I called back and they offered to do a refund for the difference. A few minutes later, the same person I spoke to called me, and told me that all the information that was given to me in our email correspondence was wrong. He told me that there was "some miscommunication" and that the certification required more days, more dives, and that they would need to increase the cost they had quoted. I told them that I had booked my whole vacation around the information they had provided and that they should honor what they told me. The person on the phone said he would talk to the dive shop owner and let me know. After we finished that call, within 2-3 minutes, I received emails cancelling my booked course. I immediately called the shop again to find out what was happening, but they just did not take my calls. I followed up with an email asking for an explanation, but they did not reply (again, all this within minutes of them taking my credit card, confirming the booking and calling me trying to charge more). In all my years of diving, doing so in multiple countries, I had never faced this situation. They clearly do not understand the commitment (cost and time) that going diving requires for a diver traveling with his/her family where they do not dive. I am taking precious time I could spend with my wife and five-year-old daughter, creating memories, for the diving certification. I also planned and booked all other activities around the information they had provided by email. When things are written, there is no room for "miscommunications." The fact that they tried to overcharge me (even when over the phone I pointed to the email where they quoted the price", and after catching their intention to overcharge, they started coming up with these additional days, additional time, additional dive, and additional cost required, is absolutely unacceptable, a deceptive practice (bait-and-switch), and disrespectful to someone that is booking a whole vacation around this activity. I always book my diving with shops that are listed in the PADI site because it gives me the peace of mind and certainty that they are established dive shops that abide to PADI's Quality Management Practices, Safety Guidance, and involving qualified personnel. This is the first time in all these years, and diving in multiple countries, that I find myself in this situation. Do yourself a favor and avoid Aloha Scuba Diving Company at all costs.

It was the best decision we could have made. General practice physicians are not going to help you when you tell them a patient is dehydrated or lacking nutrition because they've lost their appetite due to stomach illness. They will just say eat and drink more, not helpful for someone w/nausea. I watched my mother suffer for months and no one would intervene with a solution. We found our own solution at Ocean Therapy. They were easy to schedule and came to our home, really helpful if you have mobility issues. Our nurse was Renee, she was amazing. Knowledgeable, compassionate, and so very competent. We are scheduling another session, and will continue to turn to Ocean Therapy for our IV care.

On top of that, they did not refund my payment. If you don't want your vacation to be ruined, book with someone else. Now, thy are arguing that they will not process a refund because the cancellation was the night before. I completed all the forms they required and had plenty of time to review them. However, they decided to wait until the night before to review it and cancel the dive. Because they took until the night before to do so, now they conveniently say the cancellation was before 24 hours of the reservation. Why did they not review this before? I have more than 50 dives logged in different countries. I know what the physical requirements are to have a safe dive (my own safety always comes first). They cancelled because I had a minor surgery (they didn't even asked what kind) 8 months ago. The operator called at 7pm the night before with this concern and offered that his wife (who happens to be a doctor), could clear his concerns. I asked about the cost and he quoted $200-250 for the "consultation". They were just clearly looking for an excuse to cancel at the last minute and keep the payment. STAY AWAY FROM DISHONEST VENDORS!!

Parking is easily accessible if you don't mind walking. Parking directly on Mokulua Drive and Aalapapa Drive is permanently banned. Visitors typically park at Kailua Beach Park (about 0.8 miles away) and walk or bike over. We found parking on a side road a few blocks away (didn't get towed) and we stayed for several hours.

Beyond that, have fun, respect the ocean, and whatever you bring with you make sure it comes back with you. Mahalo!

Morals are more Important than money if you are overthrowing/ outbidding a special business that communities admire take some time and look deep into your heart too back to start of company. "Dive deep your heart is there" Would I go to Nepal as a wealthy native Hawaiian buy out the peoples market places and business of weaving and special colored fabric designs and making so I can triple your investment? maybe that market place was profitable now but years ago a persons grandpa sweated and worked for coins to run home barefooted to give the money to his family to eat. Have a heart and see the past and appreciate The Beach Boys. They worked hard back then and do now. Money is money and anyone can do anything to make money. Our world is full of cultures. Indigenous culture and teachings started from generation"S" before us. It is important to preserve culture. This beach boy culture was started and "advertised" by generations. Profiting off indigenous people is morally incorrect to the culture of anywhere in the world. Think about this ..... what if the wealthiest man in the world purchased ALL special "places" like The Beach Boys image doings and teaching is special to Hawaii-- And this wealthy person had no knowledge of Nepal. Alaska, Italy. Korea , Japan Singapore etc. and purchased special places similar to our Beach Boys. The truth of the culture would diminish and decline. Children would never learn their special places in their heritage, teachings, techniques, values. It will be lost slowly but surely. If you were form Australia and you went on a vacation in Indonesia and payed money to ride an elephant (please excuse this example if it offends animal rights activists) and pay to fly here to experience the culture and talk to the locals and feel the country you visit... and the surprise -- all the workers were Australian.. It would be very disappointing to you/myself included. You could have did that activity at home with your fellow mate instead of spend thousands of dollars to travel for a half way experience of a culture. On a side note, any race or religion can learn the hula and dance beautifully. But to learn it correctly one learns it from a Kumu. This is not about race. This is about people native Hawaiian people who through generations created an image, built a legacy with no money from the start. Passed this down to generations and grew their business. Now comes in deep Hawaiian history of ownership of the beach. The government. It is imoral for another company to profit upon the work, image of The Beach Boys created for dozens of years to make this area location of Business what it is today. It is not a "monopoly" of the beach for them to have this spot year after year. Their forefathers earned this and marketed this type of lessons. This is their spot. Our government should recognize trueness, cultural values, and preservation of Hawaiian culture. That is the true reason our government profits from tourism as well. Maybe one day the offfical that has granted this bid to your Company or your company's owner --will spend thousands of dollars to take his family to Africa to experience real natural safari and arrive there to find all the parks taken over by Disneyland non indigenous people in American clothing ...and he can have the Disney experience safari in Africa for all that money. This the same thing happening to our culture of The Beach Boys and these two business. Money over morals is sad and will be losing a special culture created by indigenous islanders. I do not understand the bad reviews on this site... I have dove all over the world and have about a thousand dives under my belt and I have never gotten better service and treatment then the service provided by Dive Oahu!!! I work in a hospital and I know that if you do everything right most people are not apt to write a review...and if you mess anything up people let you know!!! so for 100 happy customers you get one or two reviews with positive feedback. with not even 10 unhappy customers you get 7-9 horrible reviews... Here is my Experience... My names Is James Gresl and I arrived in Oahu with very little planning decided to go to the Navy Exchange and Singed up with Dive Oahu for the Wreck dive followed by a shore dive. I asked where the location of the dives might be and the Clerk said that depends on conditions...I show up to the boat and was greeted by a Very Hospitable Captain and Guide...that was it!!! nobody else was on the boat...I have been to a lot of other places that would have re-founded my money and canceled the Boat...but instead Dive Oahu gave me a private boat trip out to an amazing Wreck the Sea Tiger!!! Filling out the waivers/forms They looked at my certification level and knew I had dove a lot before. The boat Safety Brief was perfect not droning on and on like some places do, and not too short to compromise what the brief is about...Safety. I felt confident in the event of any situation... The Divemaster/Guide Named Ernie Was an outstanding guide and used my camera to get pics of me on the amazing Sea Tiger! Being the Photographer I am not used to being on the receiving end of the camera and The fact that he took my camera and took pics of me made the experience all the more memorable and one I will never forget!!! After the First dive they had on-board snacks to keep you going I had a choice of chocolate or peanut Nature Valley Granola Bars...Got to talk to the crew during a good surface interval and then back in the water again. The Second Dive the Guide wanted to show me some sharks that are know to hang out a short 10 min boat ride from the Sea Tiger. And once we got in their were four!!! He again got pictures of me with some small white tipped reef sharks!!! I dove the date this review is posted... I dove this morning (8/16), on Anger Management. You have a great crew on that boat! I started having some issues on the first dive. I had a headache that started during the dive. Everybody was very attentive to me after returning to the boat when I told Joe I had a bad headache, making sure I was ok. I was given water and warm tea to drink (nice touch, by the way) to make sure I was hydrated. The choice was left to me to make the second dive, or not. I thought I would be fine. Unfortunately, about 10 minutes into that dive, I became very short of breath. We were diving with Kent. He checked on me, then sent me to the surface with my buddy, another employee of yours, but also my daughter. She stayed right with me on the ascent, keeping me focused on my breathing, and not ascending too fast. When we surfaced, Joe, the Captain, immediately knew I was in trouble. He and Wendy helped me onto the boat, and began helping me calm down, and get my breathing under control. Joe continually checked on me, as did Wendy, while we waited on the other divers to surface. As soon as Kent entered the boat, he also came to check on me. Even Chris was checking on me, although he had his own group of divers. Even when we docked, all of the staff made sure I was ok before I left. I knew they really cared. Thank you all so much for a great dive experience, even with the trouble I had. Very nice equipment and boat, but some of the crew really need to be able to "read" their customers better. Our Captain, Shelly, was awesome, great attitude and very personable. However the micro-management and attitude from the dive masters was incredible. Peter and (Chris or Eric?) need some serious lessons in customer service. They talk to everyone like they are in boot camp. They need to remember, we are all certified divers and do not want their constant micromanagement and attitude. If I need your help I will signal for it or ask. Do not sneak up behind me and inflate my BC or pull my fin off or lecture me for going through a "swim through" and I do not need to grab the mooring line to ascend. BTW Peter I found out that by definition if you can see an exit with light coming through it it is defined as a swim through NOT a "penetration". Get your definitions straight before you lecture people. Remember we pay you to show us a good time, not try to prove your superiority. For the rest of my dives I ended up going to Island Divers and Honolulu Scuba Company and could not have been happier. read more

I love using Dive Oahu. The staff is always super friendly and mostly knowledgeable. They have a great selection of scuba gear to buy, and the shops are always clean and presentable. The boat crew are very accommodating and take everyone's safety seriously. The only real complaint i have is that I have tried to rent nitrox several times and there are either not enough rentable tanks, the tanks aren't filled regularly, or they are filled improperly so they are unusable, it doesn't seem like there are very many staff members knowledgeable on nitrox, how to analyze them, or that know the safety aspect that go with nitrox. Every other shop I have rented nitrox from clearly labels who filled the tank and that it was analyzed with a lable on the tank to insure proper filling and safety, Dive Oahu is the only shop I have found that doesn't do this. Other than this issue I love being able to take my business to Dive Oahu for most of my scuba diving needs. read more

If you're nervous about learning to dive, this is your place. I started with a discovery dive with Amie last October, then came back in March for my Open Water certification with Jackson. Between those two visits, Jackson took me from barely passing the swim test to completing two days of open water dives -- even as I unknowingly battled a sinus infection that made breathing and panic a real issue. He never made me feel like giving up was an option, and somehow made me comfortable enough to come back and push through. This week I returned to finish my final two dives, and Amie was my instructor again. It felt like a perfect full-circle moment. She guided me through the remaining skills and my first real underwater exploration with the same calm, encouraging energy I remembered from day one. Six months, two instructors, zero pressure -- and now I'm a certified diver. Jackson and Amie are the real deal. Dive Oahu is lucky to have them. read more

We signed up for their 5 day dive package and it was an awesome experience. The team at Dive Oahu are amazing. Everyone was super professional but also really fun. The office administrators were organized, the dive boat captains were skilled and easy going and their divemasters were fun an flexible. The dive boat is top of the line and the equipment rentals are in great condition. Their automated system made it easy to arrange and change bookings and to ensure they knew what we needed (rental wise) and had it set up ahead of time. They switched all our tanks and hauled all equipment; while this occasionally made us feel super lazy, the level of service was above and beyond. Since we were there multiple days, the captain would often ask us which dive sites we wanted to check out. They also provided granola bars, pretzels, pop, water, hot chocolate and tea on board. My wife and I decided to come back to Dive Oahu to complete our Advance Open Water certification, and once again the whole team of professionals at Dive Oahu knocked it out of the park. Our instructor Bradley, Capt Dan, Chris, Josh, and Peter provided all of us great training and an awesome experience. On our last set of dives, Captain Dan and the crew decided to take us to Ewa Pinnacles and the Navy Tug; all I can say is WOW!!! They didn't have to take us all the way out there, but they did because that's how Dive Oahu operates; they do everything in their power to make your experience the best it can be. My wife and I will continue to dive with the great Dive Oahu team, and we look forward to completing more certifications with them. Dive Oahu is simply the most professional dive shop on the island. It should be your first choice for charter dives and classes. I completed my Open Water certification last month with them and enjoyed the experience so much I returned for my Advanced Open Water cert this weekend. The boat is world-class and the instructors are phenomenal. Captain Dan, Chris, Peter, Josh and Brad were engaging and extremely knowledgeable. Many of us had been to the dive sites we had planned to visit, so they went above and beyond and took us to Ewa Pinnacles and Navy Tug instead. Both were a little out of the way, but very much worth it. We saw white-tip sharks, more turtles than we could count and tons of other sea life. We went out with Brittney for the snorkel in turtle canyon, and had a great experience! The first location was a bit murky, but multiple turtles were still seen! Second location was much better visibility with one turtle who surfaced multiple times. I loved the small group size that allowed for more one-on-one discussions about the locations and animals. Loved the provided wetsuits and snacks on board. We went with scuba divers and got to hear all about what they saw below the surface as well, which was a really fun aspect. Not only did we see turtles, but we also saw an eel and a parrotfish. The shark didn't want to show itself to us, but we loved hearing about him sleeping just below us. Would definitely recommend going with this company- we had a great time and want to get dive certified for the next time around! read more

I just recently joined Dive Oahu as a student for their dive master course through the VA as a veteran. I was with a different company so I had something to compare too and I have to say this for the veterans, if you are going for divemaster this honestly the best choice. The instructors have been highly professional, knowledgeable, and also very approachable which is also nice, the staff have gone out of their way to text, call, and update me on details concerning dives or even things that are really and truly just for me, the equipment is top of the line (including the boat). Overall I can not describe how pleased I am with Dive oahu as a whole in every aspect, 5 star rating for sure and I will be sure to tell every veteran I come across to give this company their business. read more

2017 11 21, fantastic service, amazing boat, great crew and Dive Master Chris made for two unforgettable dives. The first to the 'Sea Tiger', and attaining a depth of 34m. The wreck is easy to penetrate and full of marine life, an eel ready to great you as you enter the control room. Eagle ray doing a graceful glide by, and a white tipped reef shark begging to be included in selfies. The second dive to the horse shoe shaped reef to 'the secret', was just as eventful. So many different fish I'll be identifying for a few nights yet, a shy Octopus entertained us for a few minutes before retreating to a crevice bt keeping a watchful eye out. Great staff and experience. After not diving for several years Riley, Kendall and Capt. Neil made my return to the water and the depths below very easy. They showed a good knowledge of the dive sites and were very helpful and answered any questions. I was able to see a decent sized sea turtle just taking a nap under a reef shelf. Prices were about on par with other dive outfits in the area. Equipment was up to date and in great condition. They even had a few extra pieces of gear tucked away in case there were any problems while out at the dive sites. Shuttle service to hotels was quick and easy; it made getting to the marina much, much easier. Overall a great company and I would dive with them again! read more

Back in Hawaii for the 8th time. Decided to go do a scuba dive here on Oahu in Honolulu and chose Dive Oahu. They have their own boats and very professional staff. We went out on the discovery tour for beginners and visited two dive sites. Our PADI instructor and guide was Evan. He is a great instructor and has a lot of patience. He made the introductory portion very enjoyable and easy. Next, we had a professional underwater photographer...Kyle! Great photography of the divers and underwater experience. Last, but not least, we had Captain Grace as our boat Captain. All three worked very well together as a team and have great personalities. Dive Oahu was recommended to us as we were walking along Waikiki beach. The tour guide was adamant they were the only scuba company he recommended and proceeded to promptly write their number down from memory. Given that my boyfriend dives as part of his job and I am a beginner, we were pleasantly surprised that the reef dive was appropriate for both our skill levels! The crew (Art, Jessie and Matt) were friendly, knowledgeable and professional...to say the least, they made for a very fun day! With Jerry as our Captain of Anger Management, and three wonderful dive masters, Lauren guided us as we hit Ewa Pinnacles and then the Navy Tug. Even with the rougher waters of the day, the ride out was smooth, the crew pleasant and comforting, and we had wonderful visibility and a great trip. The boat is large and fast, there is room for all your gear and a post-dive freshwater shower. Dive Oahu needs to be your first choice. They PROVIDE you with top of the line SCUBAPRO dive gear. I received my open water and advanced open water through Dive Oahu. The staff is friendly, curteous, and knowledgable. They were extremely flexible when I had to reschedule a class. They are always willing to help the customer. I also did a boat charter with them to the Sea Tiger wreck. Due to other cancellations, I was the only patron on board. They could have cancelled due to a lack of interest, but they took me--just me--out and treated me like royalty. I could not have asked for a better experience. They are much better than the other diving establishments on the island--believe me, I've tried others but Dive Oahu has always treated me the best. read more

Dive Oahu was a great place to dive. They picked me up from my hotel and took me to their boat. They had me try on gear to make sure it fit and then walked it across the harbor road to the boat. Once we got on the boat there was a site briefing . We went to a wreck that was sunk to about 100' that had a great story about smuggling people in to Hawaii. There were so many fish and nudibranchs. The second dive was on a shallower reef. There were lots of small fish and even a white tipped reef shark that was pointed out under a ledge. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I went to go check out what all the talk was about with the new stands at Waikiki. I went to go rent and umbrella and some chairs and we had to dig our own hole (by hand no tools) to place the umbrella. The other Beach Boys already had the hole dug or at least helped place the umbrella. No customer service. Also I saw people renting surfboards from them and the fins were placed backwards! And one guy had a leash on his hand. I can't believe they have "the locals choice" on there banner because locals would never choose people who have no aloha/ customer service or surfboard knowledge especially when people PAY for the surfboard. read more

We wanted to rent a surfboard from these guys, but none of the board ready, they seem to be hammering and drilling trying to put the fans in! One of them actually inserted the fin backwards! The dive oahu beach staff seem completely clueless and out of their element and couldn't even answer the most basic of questions. This company does not seem to know what they were doing, maybe they should stick to scuba diving? Even more frustrating is the owner just cries " false review" Every time he gets a bad review to justify their horrible business practices. My son was putting it on and it ripped. The day of the return Paul was the person helping my wife. My wife told Paul the the other fin ripped. My wife called me on the phone about this matter. He was going to charge us $29 for the damage fin. I was pissed because those fins was old and thin already. I can understand If it's new. We didn't want to pay the $29. Aqua Zone was about to lose a customer and a bad Yelp review. Paul called the owner and the owner was nice enough to not charge us. So I'm a happy customer once again. Had the best time snorkeling with sea turtles today!…read more Boat ride was ~20 minutes. Anchored out by Waikiki Beach, just past the surfers. The reef itself is not colorful like Finding Nemo, but there were plenty of fish to see and quite a few turtles swimming around. We saw a handful of large sea turtles and a few baby ones. Loved watching them come up for air and swim around beneath me. Glad to see how comfortable turtles are with snorkelers. We had one person chase after a large turtle to try and touch it. There's always that one kid in class... Crew members were great! Friendly, knowledgeable, and brief! My partner went diving and had a lot of fun seeing the little sharks down below in the caves of the reef and swimming with turtles. Water visibility was good, not as clear as Molokini in Maui, but this place had turtles!! I THINK they're limiting capacity due to COVID, which is nice since the boat only had 8 people. Definitely would do this again!

This was only my second time ever diving - first time diving was only a few days before this at a very introductory level at Magic Island Beach. This dive was more advanced as we went out on 2 dives off of a boat. There were two groups on the boat we went out on. There was a more advanced group of divers who were finishing their Advanced Diver certification and my group who had myself and 2 others who had dived before but not in a long time and needed a refresher. Our instructor (it was a year ago so unfortunately forgot his name!) was really friendly and helpful. I was a bit nervous but he calmed my nerves, explained everything thoroughly, and made sure we were all comfortable and taken care of. He showed us a ton of really cool ocean life underwater and we got to see tons of urchins, eels, and even an octopus! He took some amazing photos and videos as well. This discovery dive was so much fun I decided to go for my PADI certification after this!! 1 year later I am PADI Open Water Diver certified and definitely continuing to dive whenever I can!! Super grateful to Big Kahuna and my dive instructor for igniting this new passion!!!

Reef Pirates was absolutely the right choice, and I would recommend them to anyone, especially anyone who is nervous about learning to dive or traveling/diving solo. I spent a LOT of time researching where I wanted to complete my scuba certification. I looked at companies all over Waikiki and beyond, I ultimately chose Reef Pirates based on my research. I can honestly say it ended up being one of the best decisions I could have made and was the highlight of my Hawaii trip. It was not only the best-priced option I found, but the experience was far beyond what I expected. And extremely friendly and knowledgable staff. I genuinely could not have asked for a better instructor than Greg. I was traveling solo and was honestly a little hesitant about doing my certification and diving alone as a new diver, especially as a young woman. Though, all staff both on and off the boat made me feel safe, welcomed, and reassured. I was traveling alone, but I NEVER felt alone. One of the moments that really stood out to me was when I came back to the shop from my dive and one of the staff members said, "You seemed nervous when you got here, but now you seem so confident and happy." She was absolutely right, and the fact that she noticed that meant so much to me. It showed me that the staff were genuinely paying attention to how I was doing, not just going through the motions. Greg was an incredible instructor. As a new diver, I made a few mistakes that were completely my own fault, but he caught them immediately and made sure I stayed safe. He was patient, professional, encouraging, and taught me so much. Captain Allan was also fantastic and was incredibly helpful both on the boat and when I was getting ready to get in and out of the water. Between the two of them, I felt like I was in very good hands throughout the entire experience. And if you're a new diver, I cannot recommend Reef Pirates enough. You are truly in good hands. If you're an experienced diver, they also clearly care about making the experience memorable and helping you see the best marine life possible. We got to swim with sea turtles, which was one of the coolest experiences of my life, and they took some amazing photos of me that I will treasure! What I appreciated most was that I never felt rushed. Even after the dive was over, the staff were still happy to help me, answer questions, and give me recommendations for the rest of my solo trip. Everyone was so personal, friendly, and genuinely invested in making sure I had a great experience. I am so grateful that I chose Reef Pirates for such an important milestone. Getting my scuba certification was something I was really excited about but also nervous for, and they turned it into an experience that gave me confidence, taught me so much, and left me with some incredible memories. Let me first start by saying the review would be a five star review if it were not for Marina, one…read moreof the dive guides. Let me go through the positive aspects first, then, I will cover the areas for improvement. First, the dive service is great for beginners. I did one previous dive in Moorea and they didn't explain anything. This time, Reef Pirates did a good job of explaining the physics and the safety procedures of diving. Also, there were several practice drills in shallow water before diving deeper, and so I think they did a good job of following proper safety and dive procedures. The guides, Dray and Marina, had over 10 and 20 years of experience, respectively, and definitely knew their stuff. Dray, who was my dive guide, was excellent. In comparison to Marina, the two have polar opposite personalities. Dray is very outgoing and friendly. I felt really safe with him as my guide and he did a good job at showing us creatures underwater. I'd highly recommend Dray if you can get him. Marina, on the other hand, is very stern and serious. I had originally been scheduled to dive with her, but I failed a shallow water test and so she sent me to Dray's group (thank God because Dray was way better). My main issue with Marina came down to the photography / videography that I purchased for $95 beforehand, but moreover, her bad attitude. After the dive was over, Marina told me she needed time to color-correct the video footage before sending it to me. Okay, I thought. Sounds fine to me. But when I received the files, she added a slow-motion effect to all of the videos right in the middle. This effectively made the video footage unusable for my purposes, and since I did not request any special effects added to the videos at the time of purchase, I requested she send the unedited videos without the slow motion effects. Marina told me she immediately deleted the originals without obtaining a final acceptance from the client. This was her first mistake. Never delete your originals until the client accepts them. Then, my real gripe was with her attitude, and she went on to say that she was doing me a "favor out of the kindness of her heart" by giving me the files, and that she had washed her hands of the responsibility of videography, and attempted to transfer the responsibility to Dray, which was pretty poor character of her throwing her colleague under the bus like that. I told her that it was not a favor she was doing for me and that she owed me videography services, and I showed her my receipt for the $95 photography/videography. She basically told me to ask Dray for any questions about these services. I requested a refund, but she declined it. Rather than making a big deal about it, I chalked it up as a loss and moved on with my life. Still, I thought it was pretty low of Marina to try and blame Dray for her mistake. Besides, some of us have to work in jobs where we get held accountable for our mistakes, so I don't have a lot of sympathy for her. The other issue with the videos and photos, not as big a deal, was they were all in "portrait" orientation (as opposed to landscape orientation). For my purposes, this also made the videos and photos unusable, for me at least. Thankfully I brought my own GoPro and had some usable footage of the turtles. In the end, I'd recommend taking your own GoPro and filming yourself, saving the $95. The diving is great and we saw many turtles. In this regard, I'd give Reef Pirates a five star review but had to take off 2 stars because of Marina.
