I knew that I didn't want or need a full meal and opted for their 3 whole wing option that came paired with cornbread. The young man who took my order was so polite and patient, as there were a few folks in line and waiting for previously placed orders. He let me know that my order would be ready in about 15 minutes so I took the time to continue my food-finding journey around the market. When I returned later, I had lost track of time and figured I'd just poke my head around their stall to see if my chicken was ready. It wasn't at that moment but I took some time to observe the process. There was only one guy in the open kitchen and prep area creating all of the meals and he was on the move. If I could add smells to my review, this one would smell like fried chicken and cornbread. It was all so fresh! When my order was ready, I only made one other stop before heading to my car to go home to my family... but not before I tested those whole wings from Delilah's. When I say that they were fresh out of the grease? Babehhh. It's like he just threw them right into the basket only seconds before. It was sooo crunchy, so juicy, just a fantastic wing. The hot sauce was a nice pairing but some spice in the breading/meat would have taken it over the top but this chicken was delicious. No notes.

The brisket was honestly some of the best brisket I've ever had. It was tender, flavorful, and easily my favorite of the three meats. The jalapeño cheddar sausage was also really good, and while the ribs tasted great, ours were pretty small and didn't have a ton of meat on them. My only real complaint was the portioning of the sampler. We were told that as you choose a larger variety of meats, you essentially receive smaller portions of each. I understand the idea of a sampler, but we literally received one slice of brisket and two-three fairly small ribs, so the portion-to-variety concept didn't make a ton of sense to me. I would've preferred slightly more substantial portions, especially considering how good the brisket was! I also ordered a cocktail, but unfortunately it wasn't really for me. It came across very sweet and mostly juice, although I think that may have been more about the particular drink I chose than the bar itself. Overall, the food absolutely delivered. Our experience at Virgil's Gullah Kitchen was completely unacceptable from beginning to end. Our waiter disappeared for over 15 minutes after taking our credit card to the register. When he finally returned, he claimed that he had somehow lost our credit card between our table and the register. Let that sink in -- our credit card was in the restaurant's possession, and somehow it disappeared while being handled by our server. To make matters even worse, our check was incorrect, adding another layer of frustration to an already completely unacceptable situation. And then, instead of taking responsibility and resolving the situation appropriately, the waiter had the audacity to give us his personal phone number and tell us to call him to see if he found our credit card. Absolutely not. That is not an appropriate way to handle a customer's financial information or a potentially lost credit card. At that point, the issue was no longer simply poor service, it became a matter of trust, accountability, and basic professionalism. I expect a restaurant to provide good food and service, but above all, I expect my personal property and financial information to be handled responsibly. This experience left me extremely uncomfortable and disappointed. Virgil's Gullah Kitchen needs to seriously address how situations like this are handled and, more importantly, how customer credit cards are being handled by staff! One star is honestly generous.
