Within one complex, you've got the Center for the Performing Arts, Carmel Farmer's Market, Christkindlmarkt (during the holidays), Hotel Carmichael, and a number of other retail options, restaurants, and entertainment options. It's all, quite literally, within walking distance (well, unless you're like me and don't have feet. But, you know what I mean). Because this is a central area, a good number of the Carmel festivals will happen around here. You've also got live music and theater (including Civic Theater also housed within this complex). Accessibility is pretty strong since so much of this area is new. I've had my quibbles with accessibility involving the Center for the Performing Arts, though in talking to current Mayor Sue Finkam there's a definite effort to go beyond ADA and to truly become more accessible. Free parking is abundant in this area and the arts district is about 1/2 mile north. Dining options include Aroma Experience, Divvy, The Old Spaghetti Factory, The Cake Bake Shop, Eggshell Bistro, Lone Pine, Graeter's Ice Cream, and others within walking distance. Retail options include Kits & Kaboodle (a great toy shop), 317Home, A.D.A. Vintage, Addendum, Baseline Social, and a host of others. I will note that most of these shops lean toward the more premium experience. There's definitely no Dollar General to be found here. There's definitely a lot to offer here and it's nearly always crowded. I also like that the website will tell you which stores are closed on bad weather days. As accessibility continues to improve, I may very well move this up to a 5-star experience. For now, it's a definite 4-star experience and it's definitely a place I can easily spend the day once I arrive and also enjoy some time on the Monon.

Established in 1865, the Town of Fortville is in Hancock County. It's a fairly easy drive for anyone who lives on the Northeast side of Indy and quite a few Yelpers can be found in Fortville, Indiana either at Taxman Brewery or Foxgardin Kitchen & Ale. There's a main strip in Fortville that has some awesome public art. Pinkie the Elephant is a beloved Fortville icon and frequent spot for selfies - it also should be noted as being a geocache spot. Noteworthy restaurants include the aforementioned places - Taxman Brewery and Foxgardin Kitchen & Ale plus places like Broadway Diner, 305 Wine Garage, Cortona's Italian Cuisine and Wine Bar, Los Maguelles, and Libby's Ice Cream & Gifts. There's a Mozzi's Pizza in Fortville, a Lincoln Square (one of my favorite locations), and also a Pizza King. There's also a Dairy Queen on the main drag. Fortville has a couple parks. It has a neat location right by a train track and it's not uncommon to see trains while in the Fortville area. Fortville can pose a bit of a challenge in terms of accessibility. Because it's an older town, some of the buildings are truly quite a bit older and not particularly accessible. For example, Taxman has decent accessibility but Foxgardin does not. Oh, I almost forgot to mention. Sunrise Bakery is an awesome bakery in the area. I'd almost consider it a destination bakery. Super friendly and awesome baked goods. I once judged a chili cook-off here at the VFW in Fortville! In terms of the community, Fortville has a dog park, a library, and kids go to Mount Vernon Schools. 4 of 6 Town Council members are women. Currently, the population is just under 4,000. Nearby Greenfield is the county seat, but it would be hard not to love this small town with friendly people and just enough amenities to give you both the peace and quiet of a small town with the "stuff" that makes daily life a bit more comfortable.

I attended the Fortville Winterfest recently and had a blast. It was well-advertised and very well organized, particularly for a small-town event. It was a great time to walk down Main Street and check out all of the new places that have opened in the past year or so, as well as take advantage of special one-day-only discounts and goodies in nearly all of the downtown shops. If you're in the Indy area, Fortville is definitely worth checking out if you're interested in trying out a new restaurant or bar, or just looking to get away from the bigger cities and enjoy a night out without the usual crowds and parking nightmares. You park your car, they provide you a ride to the airport. Drop off and pickup are right outside the car rentals and so easy. I've never waited more than 10 minutes to be picked up. Normally it is far less than that! The drivers are usually pretty chatty and help with luggage on and off the shuttle. Overall it is super easy and very affordable.

It has been open since august 2021 and has been deemed an environmentally certified structure. It is the replacement for the older parking garage that was found to be structurally unsound and was demolished in 2018. This new garage has the capacity to park over 500 vehicles and has charging stations for your electric vehicles as well as parking for compact and standard size automobiles. It has covered bicycle parking and also houses commercial and retail spaces along with public restrooms and city parking management offices. It is very well lit at night. As you go in to park you will take a ticket and I recommend taking that ticket with you when you head out on the town. There are elevators to get to all the levels or you can take the stairs. At the bottom of the garage there is a pay station. You can pay with cash or card Pay before heading back up to your car so your ticket is ready to scan to open the gates for you to leave as you reach the exit. There is some beautiful artwork on the outside of the garage and it really sets off the building. Parking here is pretty easy on the wallet. It was .50 cents per hour when I was there. I would certainly recommend parking here vs trying to do a parking meter depending on the length of time and where you are heading to in the city.

I love this parking garage and will never park anywhere else while in downtown Bloomington. The biggest plus is it close to my favorite establishment in Bloomington, the Chocolate Moose! If you park here, you must make a trip there before leaving for the day. If you stall long enough, the pay machine will probably be covered with a trash bag and you can escape free of charge. Hamilton Town Center is essentially an open-air mall. Developed by Indy-based Simon & Associates, Hamilton Town Center opened in 2008 right on the cusp of when the more traditional shopping mall was starting to wane in popularity and developers were exploring options. Hamilton Town center features over 85 shops/restaurants and is designed to resemble a streetscape. Some of the dining options, in particular, are free-standing buildings in outlots. While I think it's pretty common to associate Hamilton County with a more affluent clientele, one of the things I like about Hamilton Town Center is that it has a nice diversity within its shops - from definite high end options to more "ordinary joe" type outlets. Hamilton Town Center also hosts Emagine Theatre (the former Hamilton 16 IMAX). I suppose a minor quibble would be that the vast majority of the options here are national chains, though I noticed a lot of the national chains tend to be smaller chains that might surprise you they're a chain. Being a Simon Mall, Hamilton Town Center has a rewards club and there are some online shopping options. Like most malls, Hamilton Town Center tends to host holiday events and has a Santa every holiday. Generally speaking, accessible parking is plentiful and curb cuts are well done. There's at least one very nice greenery area that seems to draw the kids quite a bit with its various playground-lite equipment. There's a definite "sprawl" here in terms of the landscape. If you have mobility issues, you may have difficulty if you want to go to several different stores at opposite ends of the "mall." In terms of accessibility, it works. It's just a bit tiring. I considered going a 4-star and a 4.5 is probably more accurate, however, the real clincher for me is that I like the diversity of shops more than Castleton and I like the economic variation more than Fashion Mall. I just feel like there's something for everyone here. While the mall generally opens at 10am, I do kind of wish they had a decent breakfast/brunch option. However, that's pretty easy to find within a mile of this growing area. If we're being honest, Castleton is okay but has definitely declined. Fashion Mall is just fine, and I definitely like the food options, but it's more than a wee bit pretentious. Greenwood Park Mall is probably the closest comparison, though Glendale Town Center is weaving together the hybrid experience these days. Washington Square and Lafayette Square? Um, yeah. No. While Central Indiana has other options, this is definitely one of the better mall experiences in Central Indiana and it's an easy drive from pretty much anywhere in Marion and surrounding counties.

This is also just a pretty mall to walk around on a nice day. We rounded out the day with lunch at Pies and PInts in the mall which is dog friendly as well! We had an awesome sweet corn pizza and the dog was given some water and they were really kind to him.
