I went to check out discount electronics as I'm a huge proponent of electronics recycling and keeping tech junk out of landfills. This place has a decent assortment of bits especially for dell computers. The staff seemed busy and there was a lot of traffic. 2 stars They have a small selection new items for sale which aren't too bad. Some name brand stuff for reasonable prices. 1 star The odd thing is their monitor pricing. I don't know. Maybe it's due to COVID stay at home that the monitor pricing is crazy. there was very little selection of really old monitors that were all overpriced. Any monitor that had any advanced functionality (eg 2k,4K, usb 3.0 etc) was jacked way up. I was able to get a monitor new for cheaper than what this place was selling used. Same model and everything at Office Depot. I don't understand the logic. My suggestion: offer a substantial discount on monitors that you are clearly overstocked in, then you will have more space to show off your fancier monitors alongside the budget offerings. read more

About 5 months ago Rick C. messaged me on Yelp asking if I would consider adding their 3 Discount Electronics locations to my Dog Friendly Shopping List. Until last night I had yet to have a reason for shopping for electronics. Today I was very thankful for that message! Last night I got home and my mouse was dead. I tried my best to revive it's short 4 years on earth but it was beyond my help. I was already in my comfy clothes and was dreading a trip to Best Buy. So, I went next door to ask if I could borrow a mouse. I had dogs depending on me to get adopted and I could not go without a mouse for a single day. Thanks to my neighbor's mouse I was able to google the location I would be transporting a dog to an adoption event today. And since my dog would be with me I looked up Discount Electronics to see if they had a location close to the adoption event. Score! The Anderson Ln. location was only a few blocks from the adoption location! Thank you for that unsolicited message Rick C. it saved me over an hour out of my very busy Saturday - since I did not have to take my dog home and then get back in the car to shop for a mouse! When I walked in with my Pup the first thing I noticed was an awesome fish aquarium! And when I found the mouses the exact replacement for my Dell mouse was only 3.00!!! and then I saw a new keyboard that I figured I would eventually need so I also got a new keyboard for only 7.00. You'd think after working at Dell for five years, I could breeze into an electronics store, zero in on the best item at the best price and be on my merry way. Especially if it involves something as easy as a mouse purchase. Since I've been using a mouse for, oh, 15 years. Yet here I was, stalking the mice rounder like a feral cat stalking prey in back alley Brooklyn, wondering which of these little mouse-y beauties I should pick off. The sleek silver one that boasts a tiny USB insert or the larger one that won't get lost in my black laptop bag of death? The cheap ones in the bin or was the $30 special edition more my flavor? So instead of making my own choice, and being well versed in the expertise of the folks at the store, I took my hunt to the counter and pinned down one of the employees to ask them many and varied questions about Mice. I made an executive decision against the $12 and went for the $19, which is identical to the one I have at home that's failed - but 4 years is a good run. Then this handsome man behind the counter looks at me, light bulb almost tangibly going off and says "you have blue tooth, right?" As I nod my assent, he's back quicker than a flash with this sweet blue tooth mouse that is only $9. Boom! Saved me money, showed me how to browse bluetooth devices and even threw in a couple of batteries. And this brings me belatedly to my point. I've been to Those Other Electronic Stores enough times. We all have. But what sets this experience apart is how competent and comfortable the staff is. They're secure in their knowledge, they find a solution, work like a team, seem like genuine friends and are sincerely interested in helping you find the best answer to your problem, large or small. I am very unsatisfied. I bought a 24 inch monitor and it went into total brown mode two weeks later. I called and they said it only had a two week warranty and I was one day over. I KNOW for a fact the dude that sold it to me said it had a standard three months just like all their other gear. I would have never paid $130 for it if I though I only had two weeks to return it. Anyway, I get up this morning and guess what? The monitor is completely fried (see pic)... My mistake for being a cheapskate and going here in the first place...this is not my first negative experience there, also my fault for not reading the fine print on that warrantee...which is not something you have to worry about if you don't buy used crap. I'm sometimes torn about Discount Electronics, but today was one of those days when the planets aligned and I realized the true value of this place, and that is in their customer service. A friendly staffer named Michael helped me by suggesting some very workable solutions to remedy a laptop transportation issue when the cool silver and black laptop bag I really wanted wasn't in stock. I may yet order that bag from them online, but in the interim, I can now make what I have work. Oh, and they have all sorts of cool, useful gadgets. If I wasn't already there, I could go crazy in this place. One gadget I really liked (but, sadly, didn't buy), was an Iomega monitor rear-view mirror for $3. You know, for those times you want to slam your computer chair into reverse, but aren't sure if there's someone shoulder surfing behind you. I got so caught up in the moment, I forgot the Firewire cable I came in for in the first place! Best of all, it appears that I made Stephanie laugh. Two months ago I was told that I may have to start working from home and that I needed to be prepared. I wasn't and was against it but I didn't realize how serious the Covid-19 was going spread. I use three monitors at work and the guys at Discount electronics had the right cable cord to help me set up my workspace with an additional monitor to make life a little easier. I went to this business to purchase a replacement charger for a laptop. I took my old one with me to be sure they knew what I needed. The charger he brought me looked nothing like mine but I was told it was the new design and would work. I took it home for $35, which despite their name was no Discount. It fit but would not charge. I took it back, got it exchanged, took it home...same thing, would not charge. I asked for my money back and was told they do not do refunds, but store credit . I had no use for store credit so I was given a third one and surprise, surprise ...it would not charge. I wound up buying one on line for far less money that looked like my old one and actually worked. I am absolutely appalled at their customer services. Not only did my computer completely stop working one week after the 1-year warranty expired but when I wrote Joe to ask what my options were he dismissed me, offering no advice, and only telling me that my warranty had expired. Rewind to one year ago. I was advised to use Discount Electronics to get a computer for a future career in tech. I wanted something that could hold a lot of memory and programs all at once. The first month after receiving the device it was already having issues. The computer would be fully charged and die within 30 minutes of use. In hindsight I should have taken that as a sign that this computer was not worth $900 and would forever give me issue. However, I let them send me a new battery and continued using the device. I used the computer for College classes only. Downloaded only a lockdown browser required by my school for test taking. The first week of September, one week after the warranty expired, it shut down completely. I couldn't believe it. How after just one year of use has this computer stopped working? I emailed Joe and asked what my options were because I bought it about a year ago. He was short, giving me one word answers, offered no help or advice, and just told me that my warranty expired last month. I wrote back upset and confronted him about having no solutions or advice for a paying customer. He then said if I wanted to PAY to get it fixed I would need to go into one of their locations. All he seemed to care about was the my warranty had expired. It seems way to convenient that my computer had stopped working just 1 week after the warranty expired. All Joe seemed to be able to say was that my warranty had expired at the end of August. Something he seemed use to saying and probably says it on the daily. I know there are many reasons a computer can stop working, however, offering nothing to your customers.... not even advice on what their next steps should be? Unacceptable. I was just having a conversation yesterday with my high school daughter about the criticality of customer satisfaction and of being a positive representative of your company. We were at a business where multiple people in customer facing roles walked right past us without acknowledging our existence, let alone ensuring that we were being assisted. I stressed to her that everybody in the company is the face of the company, especially when interacting with the public. I further emphasized that when you're wearing your company's gear/logo or you're on company premises, you need to focus on treating people with respect and enthusiasm. You never know who is a customer, or who is a prospective customer. Additionally, you need to take the extra step to make sure your customers' experiences make them want to continue to do business with you. Today, I went to Discount Electronics ("DE") in Austin, Texas (Anderson Store), to pickup some peripherals and connectors to update one of the several offices we now have in our home due to COVID-19. The store is a 15-20 minute drive from my home. The associate at DE was courteous, knowledgeable, attentive, and creative in his support of me. When he needed assistance from his colleagues, they leapt to his assistance - it was fun to see. I was able to purchase everything I needed and get out the door in under 20 minutes. WIN! I got home to setup the office with my new gear, only to find out that the wrong power cord and brick were packaged with one of the components. Uh-oh...but it happens. I wrote an email to the DE email address from which I'd received my email receipt, not really expecting much to happen, but just to let them know I'd be coming back tomorrow to return those parts. In LESS THAN 2 MINUTES, the General Manager of the store had emailed me back with a recommended solution that would solve my problem tonight - without me having to exert any effort! Discount Electronics would resolve the issue for me. To say I was blown away by the speed of the response AND the proactive creativity of the resolution would be a drastic understatement! In less time than the GM committed, they resolved the situation, and my office is up and running. I had an expensive all-in-one PC that kept going to blue screen. My past tech looked at it, re-installed Windows, and it failed again. After looking at it again, he said it must be the mother board or hard drive--even though it passed a test of those--and suggested I replace it. It was clear he really didn't know what else to do. I called Discount Electronics and talked to Patrick, the manager of the service department. I found his dry wit amusing, and after he encountered some of the same failures that the prior tech encountered, he made it his mission to fix it. Despite my bringing it back a couple times, he never made me feel like it was my fault, and through a lot of perseverance, he forensically found a conflict that was causing the issue. I've now been 60 days without another issue, and I am now confident that this issue is 100% resolved. Patrick could have easily told me to buy a new computer, but knew that there had to be a solution and found it. I am now a Discount Electronics repair customer for life, and am convinced the revenue they will make long term from my family will far exceed what would have happened had he not been honest and persistent. The store is very clean, well organized and well stocked but good luck getting any real assistance from the employees. I have been upgrading my home office and I stopped in there 3 times to pick up various hardware upgrades. Every single time I was met with indifferent and downright rude employees who act like they hate their jobs and resent being asked questions or being forced to interact with customers. The old store on Anderson Lane did not treat customers with disrespect or indifference. When I was ready for my fourth trip to buy additional hardware, I just couldn't make myself return to that store. I went to Best Buy instead where I was assisted by a very helpful and friendly young man who actually interfaced with me and sold me a few other items I had not intended to purchase that day. It's interesting what a difference friendly, knowledgeable sales staff can make during your shopping experience. I MIGHT try other Discount Electronics locations as I continue to upgrade my home office but I will definitely NOT be returning to the Parmer Ln location. Horrible sales and customer service. Bought a refurbished pc as a gift and was told it had a 30 day return policy. When we tried to return it, all they would give was a store credit. I told the sales person we were not told this and I was basically called a liar. They pointed to the receipt which stated this in small letters. You don't know this until you buy and get the receipt. Bought $400+ Dell Precision. Wrong Power supply, required F1 on boot every time, locked on hibernate....spent hours over days googling, configuring to no avail. Took it in and asked for refund, "You are out of the return period, we will fix it" Manager took it on himself to fix, "replaced all the drivers". Took 1 hour. The upshot is if you have time, you can save some money. But to forestall frustration, start and run your new machine at store to ensure it works as needed, give yourself a couple hours to do this.......good advice for any computer purchase. The location on Anderson Lane was one of the worst experiences I've had in a computer store. We went in an hour before closing and the associate was shutting down the laptops already and showed annoyance when I wanted to turn them on and look them over. I found one that I liked and paid for 150$ in upgrades. When I got my computer the next day I noticed that the wrong windows had been installed. Very underwhelmed. It would be one star if not for the very nice people at the repair counter. I came to Discount Electronics this afternoon with a sick laptop. I came based on a quick visit to their webpage, which mentioned that you could get same day or while you wait service for an additional charge. I was more than willing to pay the extra charges so as not to be without my laptop. When I finally got to the repair counter, I was told that they didn't do same day service, much less while you wait. I then showed the gentleman the webpage and he returned to tell me that they'd try a couple of quick fixes and if those don't work, that I would need to leave my laptop for a 3-4 business day stay with them. After a couple of attempts, they were unable to fix my laptop and had no ideas as to what was wrong. That in itself wasn't the problem. The problem was the ultimate disposition. I was then told that the tech who was available wouldn't be back until Wednesday and wouldn't even get to it until Wednesday or possibly Thursday. I decided to leave and consider coming back on Wednesday. However, when I took my laptop to another repair shop (which is hoping to have it ready tomorrow), we found that the tech from Discount had left some sort of diagnostic software on the laptop that also was lagging and required removal. I am a college student and needed a new, reliable laptop and since I have had great luck with this company before, I decided to try them out again and now I am paying for it! My husband is more tech-savvy so I let him pick out the laptop and customize it to what we would need for my school and his business. When the laptop arrived, there was some cosmetic stuff around the mouse and other buttons were super sticky and looked like someone was in a hurry to do THEIR job. I received the laptop during my semester and decided to just ride it out until it was over then send it back and have them at least do something to prevent my wrist from sticking constantly. The guy who messaged me about it was named Daniel (I think) and was nice about it and let me know I was still in the time frame of my warranty. My semester ends on Sundays so we mailed it out on that next Monday and with there being a week break after, I figured I would at least get it back by that next Monday or at least that Friday especially since it was stated that it would be returned as soon as possible but that isn't what happened...Fast forward to my semester starting and I don't have a laptop to do school on and my husband can't run his business. I was patient and reached out to Discount Electronics not one week but two almost THREE weeks into my semester and the answer I got was "Sorry, we will ship it out the next day" which did me no good and put me behind. Once I received and opened the laptop I noticed a decent-sized dent on the top and figured I just wouldn't say anything because I have to catch up on school and my husband has to post for his business. The laptop worked great for a couple days but then started messing up... We now have a laptop that the screen has shrank to the middle and won't take up the full space, there are lines that flash to where you can't even read anything and it is just terrible. I reached out in regards to a refund since we paid almost $600 and have yet to hear back! So now I am struggling to do school, my husband can't properly run his business AND we are out $600! First time customer. Purchased thinkpad. My advice; research the laptop or desktop you decide on before purchashing upgrades. You may be paying for an upgrade unnecessarily. The laptop i bought was manufactured with bluetooth 4.0. I was unaware of this. I purchased the laptop and then i looked more into it and learned it already had bluetooth. Anyways I emailed support who agreed to refund the bluetooth upgrade amount. BUT 1. Why was the upgrade option there if the device already carried that feature. 2. 12 hours passed before i noticed the mistake and I had to reach out to them about it. 3. These are computer guys im sure they are very aware of this loophole. The upgrade option is there for EVERY laptop so imagine how many people have chosen to upgrade to bluetooth 4.0 for a laptop that already had it lmao read more

I ordered a docking station from them and after receiving it, the USB ports did not work. I returned it and they sent another and same thing, all the USB ports did not work. I think they sent me the same one. They will not refund my money but also will not send me a working docking station which I paid $199 plus tax. They also do not ever answer the phone when I call and I can only get very rude correspondence via email. read more

UPDATE 10/20/20. The general manager called and the issue was resolved. It was a simple miscommunication among the employees that he quickly rectified. I sincerely appreciate the help. Thank you Matt!! My father-in-law bought a computer from them on June 11, 2020. When he got it, he could not get it to work. I couldn't get up there until this month due to Covid. He is 83 and not in good health. I tried to get it operational but discovered that Windows 10 had not been activated. I tried to activate it, but the security key that came with the computer was invalid. I tried calling them but couldn't get anyone on the phone, so I left a message. When I didn't hear back after a few days, I sent them a certified letter. They still have not responded. I would not recommend anyone buy a computer from them.
