Worst rental experience ever in decades of renting cars. Made a reservation on website for midsize car to be picked up at noon on Monday. Arrived 20 minutes early and was told because I was early, the car was not available. No problem, but they had no cars. So, would it be there at noon? No. When? Don't know. Could have a pickup truck or a huge van. Going to a funeral, not a lot of time, so I'll take the van. Had to clean it. Sprinkled it with water and I'm off. Have to pull over and clean the steering wheel. Filthy. Really dusty and dirty. Hair everywhere. Get to hotel, doors not functioning. Then, valet, while unloading car finds drugs and drug paraphernalia! I am not even kidding. Cannot contact this location. Messages and email not returned. Am driving back tomorrow and am curious what they will say. How are they still open? read more

Avoid. Avoid avoid. I booked a month in advance to have a car ready at the Kingston train station as their website promised. That's why I chose them, when I get there, no cars. I get picked up and taken to their office - 30 min wait. Get to the office and asked about why my car wasn't there. "Oh those go quickly" yeah I know, that's why I booked a month in advance. Then they lost my reservation. Another 30 min. There were no cars at the station but they still took my money as if there was. They will also make it VERY difficult for you if you don't take their insurance. There goes another $70. I'm an hour behind now. Missed the first part of my daughter's ceremony at RMC thanks to bogus booking practices and outright shoddy, uncaring management. Don't tell me you have a car then act like it's my fault you don't. I will Never use discount again, and happy to tell everyone why. read more

Very unorganized and poor business practices. This rental office is like the Seinfeld episode "the reservation is supposed to reserve a car"...but it doesn't. They consistently take far more reservations then they have cars for, to ensure all the cars will be out, then cancel everyone else at the last minute. The "rent 2 weekends get 1 free" sounds good until you try and use it. Most (not all) credit cards with rental coverage state "You are covered if You receive a "free rental" as a result of a promotion, where You have had to make previous vehicle rentals if each such previous rental was entirely paid for with Your Card; ". So that should be fine...except Discount's manager will insist NO credit card company would cover the free weekend and insists you buy their insurance if you want the free weekend. Since the insurance costs more then retnal would cost there is no point in having the free weekend you think you will get. Questioning Discount on that gets...no response at all. Discount operates nothing like the other 2 major rental chains in Kingston, who are more professional and customer focused. I cannot stress enough do not count on Discount if you have an important use for the car becuase of the significant odds they cancel at the last minute. I would usually choose "cheapest", but in Discount's case there is no price difference big enough for me to use them again read more

I rent from Discount fairly often. The service is great and they'll pick you up or drop you off if you ask. They also have unlimited mile deals on cargo vans, which are hard to find elsewhere. That being said, there are a couple of things to watch out for. a) You can get better deals on their website than you can when you walk in. b) Their advertised van rentals starting from $18.95/day are actually $53/day because the $18.95 doesn't include the obligatory $25/day for insurance, and other miscellaneous charges. c) You should fill the tank as soon as you leave the parking lot and keep the receipt. I'd been in the habit of filling my vehicle right before I brought it back and, on a couple of occasions had wondered how a vehicle could be so hard on gas. Most recently I drove a van 20km and had to add $18 of gas to refill it. Obviously it wasn't full when I got it even though the needle said it was. I complained, and they gave me $10 back, and explained that they don't have a pump and so they don't refill the vehicles unless the needle is noticeably below full. read more

This is an update from my experiences on July 7th, and July 22nd. Today, July 23rd, I returned to the facility to try to sort out the issue once again. Jessica helped us and was much more knowledgeable and helpful than the previous employees. She did explain that she would keep the mistake rate for the Cargo Van but that she could not offer the quoted rate from the Cube Truck. On a positive note, Jessica did breakdown the actual rate to help us understand the cost seemed much steeper as the employee on the phone included insurance in the quote. He (the employee on the phone from my conversation on July 22nd) quoted the Cube Truck at $127, instead of the original amount we were quoted at $56... which seemed a significant fluctuation. However, Jessica explained the base price was actual $99+$26 insurance, resulting in the $127 quote over the phone. She also offered us $10 off, which did something at least to ease the miscommunication (though the original quote would have been preferred). Overall, the situation has been resolved, and I do trust that Jessica is a competent source. On a side note: When we arrived at the facility another customer had been shocked by some fees that she apparently hadn't asked about. I would be careful and aware when renting, as they do have an insurance fee, and drop off fees if you are dropping off at a different location. The farther the $$$$$$. read more

I went to the location in Kingston Ontario. While getting pricing for a rental, i purchased some packing tape. I paid the agent by credit card. After the transaction, he asked for my card again. He wrote down the entire card number on a pad. When questioned, I was told that the system needed it for inventory and at the moment was frozen. Are you kidding??? Furious that my card number is floating around, i called Discount head office. Customer care was less than helpful. i did receive a courtesy call from the local operations manager. The customer care agent was careless and condescending. After complaining, I was told i would be contacted by the manager of Customer care. A week later and no call or follow up. Ridiculous. I question their policies on credit cards. and the practice is when the system crashes. A lot is BS responses. I have serious concern about management. Customer Care does not "CARE". The manager even avoided my call and put me back to the original agent. Very unprofessional. Avoid renting here. They comprised my credit card and violated privacy laws. A call from the manager would have prevented this. Why to they need to manually write down a credit card number???? Red flag ! read more
