Understated, but clean and modern, at a value price. The Lord Nelson, an independant fixture of a motel in chain-swallowed Kingston, has undergone a modernization in the last few years.
They have renovated the room I was in (21) and it's now quite comfortable with new furniture, TV, and bathroom. The room had a Keurig coffee machine and they even provided two small chocolates (albeit on the tray, not on the pillow :) ), a nice touch.
The bed and linen was decent. I'm not a connaseiur of such things but it seemed fine. The single queen size bed in 21 was wonderfully spacious where I suspect previously there would have been two double beds.
Service was friendly, the online reservation system efficient, and the price point was superb.
Only minor gripe was that the balcony has not been similarly upgraded, and betrays its 50 year+ age. The self locking room door also feels just that slightly bit antiquated, despite a clear well intentioned attempt to modernise it.
It's on the outskirts of town but since nothing in Kingston is more than a 20 minute drive away, that is not much of an issue.
Would definitely recommend this hotel to travellers finding the prices of Kingston hotels ridiculously high. Here is a budget star. read more
