Great store and the catch all for what you're looking for however, one employee can spoil the experience! in this case there is one employee that is annoying. I stopped frequenting this particular store because of this guy. No names mention but he is a know it all, chimes in when not in the conversation and has ZERO boundaries about himself to us the consumer! was in making a purchase and the device to "tap" is not clear where to tap and the devices are 2generations ago. so I'm figuring it out with card...rather than telling me how to, he grabs my credit card and places it on the section...mind you my hand still on my credit card and proceed to talk to be like I'm an idiot!!! So yes the guys an arrogant self righteous person with zero skills on how to direct one with card tap issues. zero boundaries not to mention grabbing my card with in my hand. it took everything not to lash out at him but realized he is just ignorant . I will never return to this location, there is another one less than a mile from my home with a parking lot! The best hardware store in the downtown San Jose area without qualification -- this place has saved me with painting materials, tools, "nuts and bolts", even the varietal U.S. flag for Memorial Day and July 4. This is not the biggest or the best ace hardware. It is no where near the level of Dale in fremont or Richert in Pleasanton, but it is a city hardware store. Lowes and Home Depot are both close to me, but this store, for a tiny little spot, has better selection and people who have actually ever used tools. I love this hardware store. Every time I walk in, I am greeted and offered assistance. I can usually find what I'm looking for very quickly. The store is compact so you don't have to walk half a mile to locate an item. The garage parking is also very convenient. Oh, and they now carry frozen pies. IMHO - Covid Edition My hubby had an Ace $5 birthday coupon to redeem and since this Ace Hardware was closest to our next errand destination, we stopped in. We were very lucky to get street parking right in front. As soon as we entered, we were greeted immediately by the cashier, who asked how he could help! My husband mentioned the item he was looking for, and was told which aisle to go to! As we walked through the store, we were greeted by friendly employees who were also in the process of receiving and merchandising a shipment. They were very friendly and genuine and happy to answer any questions we had! The aisles were clean and organized, and it was fun looking around! I happened to see a whole pallet of glass canning jars being unpacked, and remembered that my friend has been looking for the elusive jar lids. I was shown the shelves that held the supply of canning supplies and I quickly took pictures of the items my friend wanted and attempted to text her the pictures. Since the store occupies the first floor of a concrete apartment building, wifi is unavailable. The minute I stepped outside, I was able to send my texts! If I could give zero stars I would! I have never had to experience being profiled ever until today. From the moment we walked in. Andy an employee asked my husband and I about 30 times if we needed help finding anything from the moment we walked through the door and while following us through the store. Not only did Mr Andy follow us but he made sure he was sharing with all associates to keep an eye out as everyone who worked there seemed to have all eyes on us. I started to get annoyed since really we just wanted to get lights for our Christmas tree and look around but I was being harassed the entire time. I'm all about customer service, however the only customers treated in such a way was myself, my husband and a homeless man with a backpack who looked like he could hardly walk. There were older people in there but not once we're they followed or asked 30 times if there we're looking for something specific. Our visit lasted about 10 min and what infuriated me most was that when walking out of the store Andy then decided to chase us out and tell my husband that he saw him put lights in his pocket. My husband then began to toss everything out of his pockets on the sidewalk. this was so embarrassing to say the least I was livid. We totally understand that there are a lot of people who steal and take advantage of small stores even big ones at this point however, this is no way to treat anyone ever! We do not look homeless, I have stage 2 breast cancer and bald with my husband who is also bald with glasses we parked our car directly in front of the store in a tight space, we truly were not there to do anything but spend money on items we needed for our home and left with nothing but anger, tears and feeling completely embarrassed. I will never go back to that store and I hope that no one has to experience this ever. I have had the privilege of visiting this Ace Hardware for 3 days in a row now! Slight sarcasm, haha. My fiancé is doing an outdoor project for my mom including putting up lights and cutting down a tree stump in our backyard. On this 3rd visit, my guy finally decided to ask for help! He was looking for a saw, stump remover and some outdoor patio lights. Andy could not have been more helpful! He was super friendly and guided us to exactly what we were looking for. We had spoken to him on the phone ahead of time and when we arrived, he was just as accessible and nice. Darius, the gentleman who operates the register is also witty and kind. The people at this Ace hardware know what they're doing. I hate going into large hardware stores. So often the employees are scarce and undertrained., Many of them don't know much about tools or home repair or what to recommend. At Ace today, Jose greeted me when I walked in. He told me exactly where to find the things I needed. I'm installing a screen door so there are hinges, tools, nails, etc. to find. Nick brought me to the tools I'd need and was really helpful, talked to me about them, why one would probably work better than another. The store is small, but who cares? This location takes a bit to fulfill their online orders but i was happy with the curbside service at pick-up. I ordered the night before and i wanted to pick it up first thing in the morning bc i was already out running other errands and wanted to pick up before work meetings started but my order wasnt ready until an hour or 2 after they opened. After they called to tell me my order was ready, i headed to the store for pick up and called for curbside. Worst customer service I have experienced in a long time! Went in to have 3 keys made today. Gave the original exterior door key to employee. He took the key and made my keys but failed to explain to me that the key shape and grip would look completely different from the original. Unbeknownst to me, they just make a cheaper key base without explaining that this would be the case in-turn giving me no choice. After the keys were made I noticed the key grip was noticeably smaller than the original. I was concerned and asked why the size was different and was told they were basically the same type key. I paid for the keys skeptically thinking that I would try the key at home and bring back if it did not work. The keys worked technically but affectedly did not because of the grip being so small, it hurt your fingers when trying to turn on the exterior door. I went to return the key and was refused a refund or remake by manager Jose because he said the key worked and tried to blame me for not requesting the proper key. I was astounded this was the way he chose to handle this $10 situation. Proper customer service from the beginning would have been that the employee inform the customer that the key shape and grip size would be different thus giving the customer the option whether to decide to have the keys made. I am furious over this situation not because of the money, but for the mere fact of the rude customer service and lack of willingness to make things right. I will never return to this Ace Hardware and do all I can to tell others about this awful experience and store. One unhappy customer! read more

I like to support small neighborhood stores and I am newish in this neighborhood. I have tried several times to visit this ace when I need something and very rarely is there anyone excited about helping. Usually the people at the front counter do not show they are excited to serve customers and never have I been asked in the store if I needed help. Today I bought several large gardening items and there was no offer of help to carry them out or help me to load them n the front of the store. I have always been happy with the service, and knowledge I've received from any Ace Hardware I've shopped at. But, this was an exceptional experience that I had at the Diridon Ace yesterday. This summer my home and yard has been plagued with flies. I have tried every strip, trap, spray, zapper, and home remedy I could find. Nothing worked. So I went on line and googled fly poison. I found a product with great reviews called Quickstrike. Quickstrike was available at 3 nearby Ace's, so I headed out to go buy some. Unfortunately, the first 2 Ace's I went to didn't have it, even though their website said they did. So my last hope was the Diridon Ace. I walked in and was pleasantly greeted by a young man named Marcel. He asked if he could be of assistance and I showed him what I was looking for. Marcel immediately said "that's the stuff with great reviews on TikTok. He told me all about the product, how to use it, and it's effects. He said he told his manager about it after he had read the reviews. He also asked if I would get back to him, to let him know how it worked. I called Ace this morning, but it's Marcel's day off. But, Marcel I could not wait to tell you. IT WORKS GREAT!!! Baited inside and outside my home and there is not a live fly in sight. There are about 100 dead ones out in my garden area. TL;DR - Their No Bag Policy Is Inherently Racist. I feel I was racially profiled, and it was very clear his biases passed over other people that were white but did not pass over me, who is a regular. I come here regularly because it's my only nearby hardware store. Sometimes multiple times a week. I live downtown and I intentionally shop locally, choosing to take the bus or walk to wear I go. I have gone into the store multiple times wearing a backpack, come in with my kids wearing a backpack, and never get questioned about wearing a backpack. When I'm with my wife (who is white) she is never asked to take off her bag and leave it at the front. Her bag is her diaper bag. She can't be without it just in case one of our kids has an explosion on the aisle or something. I'm sure the employees would appreciate it. In any case, I was coming in to purchase some hardware to fix something, and was rushed on time. I was instructed to leave my bag at the front. Never been told to do that before. Because I was short on time, I left my bag and ran to the back to try and size up the hardware I was looking for. When I was finished I walked up front and there were two older folks who clearly had bags, one older man who had a bag, and a woman who had a backpack. I asked the guy who had me remove my backpack why I had to leave my bag up front but these customers did not. He said he didn't see the male customer, he said the other customer had a purse. I pointed out that the female customer was clearly wearing a leather backpack, the same size as mine, and that it should have been left up front. He said nothing and gave me a look. I proceeded to tell him that I felt that it was discriminatory because I felt that I was treated differently than the other customers, and that I'm even a regular customer. He proceeded to tell me that he knows a guy who comes in wearing a kilt and he always asks the kilt wearing guy to take off his bag. I said nothing back to him, but it angered me that he tried to equate a guy wearing a kilt with the feeling of racial profiling. I don't leave reviews on yelp ever. Like ever. Unless I feel I really need to. You can look at my history. I think it's appropriate to share this for other people of color to share their experiences, and for the manager or owner to see how this actually affects people negatively. Unfortunately for me, I can't just protest and be one of those people who say "I'll never go here ever again" because I just can't. San Jose doesn't have hardware stores accessible like this one. Whenever I say to my dog, "Do you want to go to the hardware store?" her ears perk up and she zips toward the door. Dogs are welcome at the majority of hardware stores, but Ace is one that actively loves and embraces the dogs coming through. The employees always have treats on hand. :) It's a small store, but they have everything the big hardware stores have. They even have a small selection of plants outside. Obviously it's not the huge nursery you'll see at a place like Lowes or Home Depot, but because of its size, they're able to monitor the floor much better. If I don't immediately know where to find something, I can count on an employee to help me within a few minutes. They have a lot of stuff you wouldn't expect to find at the hardware store as well. Writing utensils like crayons/Sharpies, toiletries, nail clippers, small kitchen gadgets, cards, fun little toys and doodads, etc. I live a short walk away, so if I need something and don't feel like driving to a big box store, I'll see if it's at Ace first. If nothing else, my dog gets a walk and a bunch of love. I also have a lot of appreciation for how they're handling the pandemic. At the outset of COVID when everybody was hoarding things like sanitizer/surgical masks/N95s, they had an abundant selection that they kept upfront so that the butthead doomsday preppers couldn't buy it all up. They even had bulk packs of bottled water. The cashiers are right by the door, and the people on the floor can see everything, so they can enforce customers wearing their masks much more easily. You'd think other customers would be better at keeping their distance at a larger hardware store, but it's actually much better here at this little neighborhood store. read more

This review is specifically for the outstanding customer service and humanity of your employee Hugo. I came in a few mornings ago seeking a pushcart. The kind the homeless use. There's a sweet man, local to our area that's homeless and his cart broke. I've been ministering to him for some weeks and when I saw this I knew what I needed to do. I explained the situation to Hugo and he was so kind. He was slow at the time, so he assembled the cart for me. I had no physical ability to do it nor tools. But he saw that we were both just kind people trying to do a good thing. Hugo is an asset to your organization. Especially in a community so plagued by the crisis of homelessness. Not only was he gracious, compassionate, but he also did not make the man feel uncomfortable or unwelcome when he arrived in the store. In fact, he offered him fresh popcorn! If there were more people like this, I'd write more reviews! read more

I am so glad this shop opened after the nearby OSH and slightly farther Lowes closed. Its small but has a great selection given the size. Staff is ALWAYS friendly and helpful (vs Depot where I often find help VERY hard to find/slow). Prices are a bit higher and not as many selections for tools. But lots of the basics. Parking in the garage is easy if the street is full. And free popcorn many days. You can also order bigger items (tools, etc) online and pick them up in a few days. A good tradeoff given the convenience and size of the store. read more

I had some questions about a small repair project for drywall and the gentleman who helped me also had professional experience in painting. He was very helpful in describing differences between products and giving me a run down of items I would need for my project which ended saving me a second trip to the store! I really enjoyed this trip to the hardware store which is a much different experience than I have had elsewhere. Parking is simple - there is usually parking in front of the store or in front of the hotel next door. The garage parking is easy too - now that the scaffolding and building work is completed. I normally go to the Ace Hardware in Los Gatos but was in this area of San Jose so stopped in to look for some small replacement metric screws from a vintage stereo receiver. Unfortunately they did not have the size I needed but the employee there was so helpful showing me where the smaller metric screws were. (They were in some slide out trays close by the standard size metric screws.) Unfortunately these were too small. On my way out I thanked him for his help but told him they were too small. Instead of just saying 'ok', he suggested I check the SAE small screws. He came from behind the counter and walked me back to the trays that had them. Again, these weren't the correct size either but he was so helpful and really provided "old fashion" customer service to help me find what I was looking for. Even though it's a little farther for me, I will make this Ace my first choice from now on. Great customer service. read more

So, I might be giving five stars just because I'm so happy they opened a hardware store *here*, in the vacuum left by Lowe's after they completely abandoned the area with a 1-2 punch of shuttering all the OSH stores and the Newhall Lowe's. As a homeowner, I am excited to have a hardware store a few minutes walk away! My experience here was positive - I found what I needed, and the employees were willing to help (I didn't need any, this time) and friendly. Maybe I'll have more to say after more visits, but my requirements are pretty simple: clean store, good selection, well organized, and help available if needed.
