When I raised this issue, DOC leadership -- particularly PAIGE, Director of Operations -- doubled down. Even after reviewing records that showed I wasn't receiving reminders, she coldly cited "company policy" and refused to waive the charge. I PAID THE $50 UNDER PROTEST -- this was NOT a legitimate or fair fee. I've had FOUR SURGERIES IN UNDER A MONTH, with a MAJOR SHOULDER REPLACEMENT scheduled for 8/26 -- and this is how they treat patients who are trying to manage complex, ongoing care? just now New Will supposedly "check your insurance" before hand but then won't actually tell you that they are NOT covered. I double checked the morning of my appt with my insurance and sure enough they weren't. I also had only made my appt 12 hours prior and they had a ton of availability but for some reason still charged me a $50 cancellation fee they were willing to take me to collections over (notification I got on Christmas Eve). Probably the only way they actually make money other than making people pay cash for services their insurance DOESNT COVER. Do yourself a favor and go to a real ortho's office and not these weird franchise services. I say this as someone who works in healthcare, including with orthopedic surgeons. read more

Do not visit Slaughter office. I was rushed through a visit regarding my knee. I asked for a cost for a Durolane injection procedure and before I received an answer Dr, Thomas had already ordered the Durolane and charged it to my insurance company without my permission. I purchased a leg brace that the med assistant Crystal fitted and when I got home and I tried it and it ended up being too large. When I called in and spoke with the office manager I was told that it could not be exchanged and that I would have to purchase a new one. Be careful what document you sign. When I went to pay for the brace I was told that I would only have to pay 7% of the cost of $401. I was given a document in very small print that I was asked to sign. I was not given a copy of this document to take home. When I logged into my insurance company I noticed that I was being charged an additional charge of $162.09. There was no mentioned made of this when I was paying my $7.10. After returning to the office latter, I a was given a printed copy of my office visit charged and the bill actually said Unit DME Deposit, NOT WHAT I WAS TOLD. A true SCAM. Be careful with the con artists. read more

I waited to post this review until after my second surgery. I broke my arm at the end of July. I went to DOC because they could get me in right away. I broke my arm a week before a cross country move to the northeast. 9 screws and a plate to repair. 4 of the 9 screws were too long and protruding thru my bone. As it healed it just didn't feel right. I went back to the dr I was getting post op care from in my new state to find those 4 screws were chewing up the tendon! At the end of Feb, a full 7 mo after the initial surgery I had to have all the hardware removed AND they had to flip my arm over, open the other side and repair THAT damage! Find a better doctor. Let me start by saying it's nice that they'll see you without an appointment but they don't mention that without a referral up front, you have to pay a large fee to be seen; this office only comes in handy if you're in an emergency, no other Orthopedic offices have appointments, and you have the money for their consultation fee. One thing they don't make clear is you're probably not going to see a surgeon; you'll likely see a Physician's Assistant (but you don't pay less just because you don't see a surgeon). The problem? If you've got a broken bone, a Physician's Assistant can't write you a prescription for actual pain medication. But for an additional copay, they'll offer to let you see a pain specialist who also can't write a prescription for pain medication but will offer an injection. I am grateful for the friendliness of their office staff who were very polite and seemed genuinely concerned. I am grateful for their ability to see me in a hurry. But I don't appreciate being charged so much money just to be told, "you're in really serious pain from a broken bone? Might want to try some Tylenol." And I feel like being charged as much as I was - just because I didn't have a referral in this emergency situation - should have included seeing an actual doctor, surgeon, or someone who could do something about the blinding pain in I'm in. If not, they should lower that initial consultation fee and tell you that you won't actually be seeing a doctor or surgeon. Overall, I wouldn't recommend coming here unless you're out of choices. read more

Do not have your surgery through a Direct Orthopedic Care provider! This place is great for an immediate assessment of an injury but has no interest in pre or post surgery care! I had no idea at the time but they should have arranged for medical DME for me that was needed for my recovery, but they never did. After surgery, I called their office 4 days in a row for extreme post-op pain and I NEVER got a return call. read more

No problems my initial visit. I had the option of getting a walking boot when I was there but wanted to think about it. When I called back to get the boot the lady said there would be a office visit charge for the fitting plus the boot cost so I ordered the boot on Amazon. I was still having difficulty walking so I emailed the office for some additional support. Unhappy with the lack of communication I went to see a podiatrist in West lake (my sister is a podiatrist and recommended them). I was immediately referred to get an mri and come to find out I had a tear in my Achilles and they were able to get me the help I needed. 13 days and a follow up email later I finally received communication back from DOC and when I asked why they couldn't help me their response was because I can walk over 50 feet. I guess that's why second opinions matter, but sucks to know we can't get it right the first time. read more

I had a most pleasant first visit today. Jackie scheduled my appointment on the phone- so friendly and knowledgeable. Robyn took my x-rays- so friendly and efficient. Eric, PA (spelling? Sorry not sure) read my x-rays and performed a very thorough exam- so friendly and knowledgeable. My entire experience was made very pleasant considering how bad I was feeling. Also, was there for less than 1 hour start to finish. My appointment time was kept which is a highly unusual thing these days. I highly recommend DOC for any orthopedic needs. Dr. Darryl Thomas was there for me when I hurt my shoulder. He went out of his way to fit me into his schedule because he knew I was in pain and, as a physical therapist, I needed to get back to work as soon as possible. Throughout the entire process, he was so patient and took the time to explain what was going on and what he would do to correct it. He even squeezed my surgery in on a day when he wouldn't normally have surgery. His staff was great and continued to follow up with me after surgery. Today I am 5 days out of surgery and I feel amazing. I have been able to wean off pain meds already and have returned to work. I couldn't have done it without the magical hands of Dr. Thomas. I will highly recommend him to all my family and patients for any surgical needs. His is the real, authentic doctor who cares. Not just someone looking for a paycheck. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Villarreal and the folks at DOC Central...I broke my wrist--badly. It impacted my work (I type many hours of the day) and my personal life (being physically active in general, and roller skating specifically-- is a part of who I am). Dr. Villarreal was honest (even when I asked questions like "do I REALLY have to have this surgery?"). I never left an appointment feeling like I hadn't been listened to/heard. I've had a similar experience with my physical therapist, Jelena, who's been super supportive and caring as I'm working toward the so-called new normal. TBH...I know how important PT is but the cost......well. However, Jelena is always 100% present the session, even while she works with other folks. She checks in, makes adjustments, and I wouldn't hesitate AT ALL in investing time/money in working with her. The interactions with the interns there have been great. There's good energy there--I imagine achieving this is not easy, especially when folks' injuries are not only often physically significant, but also emotionally difficult. Anyway, I can only speak for myself and my experience, but I'm grateful to have received a recommendation to come to this location. read more

Not returning to this place. Three people asked the same set of questions. Someone who did not appear to know what she was doing came in the room and awkwardly poked around at my kid. When I inquired about her role, we learned she was a student and the PA we scheduled with was not there. Another PA came eventually and wanted to send us for MRI after x-ray and ultrasound for a very minor injury. Convenient but sucky! read more

When I broke my leg nearly two months ago, the doctor at the emergency room recommended that I go to DOC the next day to have my break evaluated. I'm so thankful I took that doctor's advice. From the moment I got to DOC that first day, everyone there could not have been friendlier or more helpful, and I felt so well cared for. Eric Johnson, the PA-C who managed my treatment after the break, was incredibly knowledgeable and kind, and he gave me practical things that I could do at home to help build my strength as my leg improved. While I hope to never break a bone again, I know for sure that if it ever did happen, I'd want to go back to DOC because I couldn't have asked for a better experience there, and I'm so thankful to their team! read more

I recently visited DOC for shoulder and arm pain with an unusual cause and symptoms. The radiology technician (Krista...? Sorry I can't remember) was extremely kind and helpful. I mostly met with Katie Ho, and she was a great listener and asked good questions to help sort out what was going on and how to treat it. She consulted with the rest of their team to verify that her prescription was the best approach, and I appreciated her care and attention to detail. When my son broke his arm, we needed an orthopedic doctor. The break wasn't major so our PCP said any ortho could do the job. My experience isn't horrible, but it also wasn't the best. My son was given a splint/brace and had follow-ups every 2 weeks. At one point the doctor mentioned PT.. seemed a bit much for a small wrist fracture. She was still extremely pleasant. Our last follow-up was with a different doctor who seemed to have a bit more experience. The hour wait in the room was unpleasant. They had a walk-in right before and that walk-in patient received very good care. You can hear between the walls. But it delayed our quick 10 minute visit with a doctor by an hour as she helped the walk-in. I'm also not a fan of their billing. No way to pay online... no portal. And when you call, you get one person. No payment plan options. Seems like a small business growing. I'd like to see online payment portal with pay-in full discounts. If we have any other broken limbs, I'll be checking out a different orthopedic place. read more

I took my son back in September of 2021 as he had injured himself in soccer. He received good care from a PA, but the billing has been not only confusing, but unprofessional. It was late in the day when we say the PA so they charged me for the visit and said after the verified my insurance benefits they would refund the difference, which they did. At the beginning of the year they started reaching out to me about a balance due. I called and spoke with someone in billing and explained that I had been charged, benefits had been verified the the difference had been returned. She said that she needed to investigate and that she would get back to me. I never heard back. I reached out due to having received another email about the balance, and they informed that it was all taken care of. Now I see that they charged my card again for more money than the difference that they had even returned to me, which means that not only did they charge me without authorization, but they charged me more than the cost of the service. Needless to say I will not be going back, nor recommending them to anyone. read more

This review reflects my experience from the front office admin staff, to the ortho surgeon that executed my surgery. I was in a motorcycle accident and separated my AC joint. After seeing three different surgeons, I felt that DOC and Dr. Darryl Thomas was the best fit given my gut feeling and personal experience. Their office is always on time for your scheduled appointment and the staff is extremely attentive. Now for the surgery aspect. I was terrified to get my procedure done since Dr. Thomas needed to work on my AC joint in a surgery capacity. The procedure went seamlessly, and you can tell how much Dr. Thomas has mastered his craft. If you're looking for a credible/trustworthy doctor, don't look any more. I'm pretty unimpressed by this facility after I went in with sudden onset severe knee pain. The PA never put her hand on me to examine it or check the range of motion. I just don't feel like she was experienced enough to see me alone. They had me get lab drawn and I haven't heard back yet a week later. I can not recommend. read more

This is my first and potentially only Yelp review. BUT! This place is great. Went in at 11 AM on a Sunday after a wake boarding accident the day before. So much pain I couldn't sit down, due to a (potentially) torn hamstring tendon. Jackie (unsure of spelling) in the front office was SO helpful, kind, and willing to discuss all available payment options with me. The PA on duty did a great job explaining the X-RAY scans and describing what he was/didn't see. He quickly helped assess the injury and get some pain meds and crutches. I was out of there within an hour, with a solid treatment and next-step plan. Everything was communicated very clearly and with such ease I'm almost excited to go back! Although hopefully it'll be for the follow-up and not another injury As an athlete and a general busy body, being injured is something I deeply loathe. But I am thankful for such a well trained and professional staff to help get me on the road to recovery. read more

This place should be ashamed to call themselves a medical facility. My 4yr old daughter broke her arm. I had heard their ads about how they save you time and money so I called them up and they said they could x-ray her and treat her. I volunteered that we had recently traveled to FL and were not done with a complete 14 day quarantine (day 9) and they said fine. When we arrived they came to take her temperature and screen us. Neither one of us has has a recent fever nor a cough. They asked if we had been around anyone with Covid and I had to answer yes because there was someone at the wedding we attended who subsequently tested positive. At this point they told us they would not treat us. Unbelievable! Must be the biggest idiots in the world because all of Austin could have Covid at this point, but nobody would know since nobody is really testing anyone. This kind of discrimination is unacceptable for places supposedly full of doctors and medical professionals who treat emergencies. Get over yourself - there is no way you can stop an invisible virus at your door - buy some freaking gowns, masks, gloves - suit up and do your fucking job! I would never recommend this place to anyone - happily go back to sitting for 3-4 hrs at the ER and paying thousands more than to be treated like scum for pure honesty. She actually said they had to protect themselves and their other patients - like your other patients are more important than us. I hope they go out of business and that all of their idiot employees standing around wearing no masks get sick from their 'safe' patients or the HEB that they wander around unprotected. If you're going to stay in business during a pandemic you need to be in business for everyone not just the people you think are safe - there's no such thing. I'm disgusted to be an American now that doctors, nurses and PAs are so afraid of a virus they aren't even willing to help people. read more
