It had been quite a while since my last visit to Dinosaurs in the Castro probably because their storefront is hidden away. It's not because I don't like their sandwiches. I did (review: https://bit.ly/3UgoeqG). That positive recollection served me well when I was feeling peckish after a long walk around Mori Point in Pacifica. This bustling shop is on the quiet side of a shopping center. It's a tiny spot taken up mostly by the prep kitchen with the rest of the space dedicated to storage. In other words, it's pure takeout which was fine by me since I wanted to bring the food home to eat. I ordered the $12.95 Special Banh Mi which featured three types of pork - slow roasted pork, pork loaf, and pate - with all the requisite ingredients in a French baguette (photo: https://bit.ly/3Gh6Ax2). That was deliciously filling with plenty of pig, cucumbers, jalapeños, and pickled daikon and carrot packed in the crunchy roll. Sometimes things just go downhill. It's not quite as good as it was before. Trying their "The Special" sandwich with slow roasted pork, pate, and pork loaf with all the fixings on French bread. The sandwich was skimpy, though the bread was great. Would love to see more pate and meat for their high prices. This was a very lackluster sandwich. I also got a grilled pork and grilled shrimp spring roll with peanut sauce. This was awful. Warm and soggy shrimp with hot peanut sauce. I also hate, hate, hate their bitter green apples in the spring roll which has an acidic taste against their burnt and dry grilled pork. None of us wanted another bite of our spring rolls. The food and drink were great. I honestly don't have much bad things to say about it. The bread wasn't really French bread but it was still really good. The pate was good, lots of pickled vegetables, jalapeño. The only reason I'm giving them a 4 star is because of their price. It's honestly super expensive for Bahn mi. The baguettes are fresh and perfectly crusty - the right amount of crunch but you can still get a good bite of your sandwich. The herbs and vegetables are fresh and tasty. We all liked the smear of mayo on the bread. The shaking beef was delicious - tender and slightly fatty. The dark meat chicken was perfectly done. We also really enjoyed the tofu and taro spring rolls, which we had with traditional peanut sauce. They're generously sized, and the combination of flavors and textures was very satisfying. The watermelon litchi smoothie was perfect on a hot day. Really more like an icy, fresh watermelon slush with litchi jelly. Look forward to trying the other drinks on future visits. And to top it all off, they have a fun selection of drinks and snacks, including Asian goodies, coconut water, Mexican Coke, and more. There's also a rack of Dinosaurs branded tees and hoodies. Love this place and I go here often. The best bahn mis in the area, and the spring rolls might be the best I've ever had. They put julienned apples into the spring rolls and the flavor it brings is perfect. They also have a mango mint smoothie that's very good. My main critiques are prices, ambiance, and that they changed their peanut sauce/charge for it now. I've been going here for years and the peanut sauce was my favorite, and I'd order a side of it with my sandwich. Unfortunately, the price went up and they either changed how they make the sauce, or they buy it premade. It's not as smooth and it "breaks" quite often which makes it visually unappealing (still tasty though). The ambiance critique is that the inside is cramped ever since COVID. It's not much more than a counter that you order at. The menu is pretty, but any appealing decor is ruined by the boxes being stored in the foyer. Go here for the food. Amazing banh mi sandwiches. I was craving a sammie and we decided to check out Dinosaurs, located in the Eureka Square shopping center in Pacifica. We came for lunch during the weekend and there was a good amount of people that were in line placing their orders. It was a good thing we had called ahead so our sandwiches were ready to go for us. All the ingredients on our sandwich were super fresh and the bread was soft and soaked up all the flavors of the spread. Both my husband and I opted to get The Special which comes with pork made in three ways (slow-roasted, loaf, and a paste version) and it was delicious. This Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwich shop can be hard to find as you're driving down Oceana since there are no signs by the street to indicate where to turn. I've uploaded a photo of the building to look for. Dinosaurs is located in the strip mall where Tea World (boba tea shop) is located; it's several doors to the left of Tea World if you know where that is. Tea World is another shop in this strip mall that is hard to find due to lack of signage. You don't realize where the shop is until you walk up close to the front of the store and can finally see the sign. Dinosaurs is a bit of a hole in the wall. You can't even see the name of the restaurant (sign) from the street. You blink and will completely miss it. The space inside is very tiny and cramped. They sell other knick knacks (clothing, etc) and there are also a few arcade machines (turned off, not plugged in). It was all placed as if much of the floor space was used as storage space. There are 4 tables outside on the sidewalk between the store and the parking spaces. Not exactly a pleasant area to sit down to eat. And it can get cold out there in Pacifica. Ordering was pretty easy. The wait was reasonable, probably because it was after the lunch rush (after 1pm) and there was only one other person ahead of me waiting for her order. THE SPECIAL (sandwich) - 8/10 I wasn't sure what to expect so was pleasantly surprised at how flavorful this sandwich was. I loved it! It was also very moist, which is much different from most banh mi sandwiches from other shops. The sandwich was also huge, so I ate one half and saved the other half for later. SHRIMP & PORK SPRING ROLL - 8/10 This order came with 3 spring rolls and peanut sauce. Everything in the roll was fresh. And they rolled it up nicely so that it didn't fall apart while eating. My order was $22.38 for 2 items (sandwich and spring roll). This was one of the more pricy banh mi shops I've been to. Frequented this joint when my daughter was still in middle school in the area. It was $5 something, then they increased it to $7 something. Fast forward to now, it's $11.75 plus $.25 bag fee plus 1.3% service charge. So, 1 sandwich is about $13. Now the question is, Is it worth the price? I cannot say it is. I understand the concept of inflation. Our grilled sandwich had very little meat and lots of veggies. A good Banh Mi has that perfect balance of savory meats, crunchy sour daikon, sweet shredded carrots, fresh cucumber and cilantro. Don't expect too much with the ambiance of this place since it's very small inside (only good for to-go). They do have a couple chairs outside the place, but it's located in Pacifica (usually windy and cold) so check the weather. Honestly, the sandwiches here are good, but they don't stand out from the rest of the bánh mì places out there. The reason for such a low rating I'm giving is not only because of the price, but I also experienced terrible customer service from the cashier today. He was very rude and gave me an attitude. I had to wait almost 20 minutes for my sandwich even though there was only 1 order ahead of me. When I picked up my sandwich the cashier just glared at me and did not say a single word. It was a bit uncomfortable and I was left confused. I used to work in the food industry so I know it's not easy especially dealing with certain customers on the daily, but I at least don't expect Popeyes level service. I won't say the name, but the service from the cashier flat out sucked. The special was a solid bánh mì. It was good, but definitely not $12.75 good. They also were a bit way too generous with the mayo and I usually like mayo. I had bánh mì from another place last week and I felt like I just ate the same sandwich, but at a higher price.
