I was surprised that Diner On 55th popped up. It says a lot that this diner is still open after all these years! I remember going there a couple of times for their moussaka --it was delicious! Great place to grab a bite to eat. However, you have to pay attention because the owner is the only cashier and every time I order a meal, the host writes the cost of the meal on the check. The owner, the short bald and round owner always charge me more than what is written on the check. I have noticed each time I have dined there over the past few years. It felt very friendly and cozy and you could tell there were lots of regulars. We went about an hour before close on Sunday and they were unfortunately out of biscuits and sausage gravy and grits, but there were plenty of other good choices. Pretty good diner at the corner of 55th and St Clair. You can't miss it. It is gleaming stainless steel. Inside it's spotless. Immaculately clean. When the booth next to us cleared out the chef came over and wiped the tabletop and all of the condiment containers. Very nice. I had the cheeseburger and onion rings. The cheeseburger was a half pounder and cooked perfectly medium as I asked. The onion rings were battered. Not usually my favorite these were pretty good. Burger and rings for $10.50. I ordered one blueberry and 1 regular pancake and I was very surprised to see a whole blueberry pop out. You know the helpings are huge when Hubby can't quite finish them! Not only did he enjoy the Everything Omelette, but he was so impressed with the coffee he asked our waitress what brand it was (she brought out a bag and held it up for a photo). I was very happy with my grits (WITH brown sugar because if you're getting all carb-y, you might as well go all-in). The restaurant was about 3/4 full when we got there, but despite the crowd the service was still great. We even witnessed our waitress run outside to deliver a container to a customer who was about to drive away without it! We had a waitress who was both smart and kind, who poured a wicked-good cup of coffee, and gave us amazing service. The food was great, and inexpensive. My wife and I were just super impressed with the place, and it was the kind of spot you enjoy when you're in need of a great breakfast or lunch; they didn't disappoint. We had lunch there on a weekday in 8/05. The diner is located just a few blocks south of I-90, with an exit right on 55th Street - so it makes for a perfect breakfast or lunch stop if you're driving on the Interstate. It's a retro diner which opened in late 2001 and the interior is nice; the floor has black-and-white tiles, and the counter has the same with gleaming chrome. The booths and stools are red. Bad experience over there this morning I went in for breakfast, the scrambled eggs that came with my breakfast the cheese that was supposed to been cooked inside of my eggs was just a piece of American cheese laying on top of my scrambled eggs not even melted so when I went back in the waitress and I approached the manager which was sitting right there he told us that he didn't have time for this and to move away from him take the food and go. I explained to him sir I expected the cheese to be cooked with the eggs, he said I don't want my pans messed up and we have to wash them every time, so take the food or your money and leave my establishment. I was in Cleveland for the Tri-C JazzFest and stopped by for an early-morning breakfast of scrabbled eggs with cheese, bacon, etc. When my order came, I noticed that the eggs were runny; so I sent them back. The second effort was no better. The eggs were still runny. When I pointed this out to the waitress, one of the cooks began screaming at me from the kitchen: "It's the cheese that makes them runny," and other ridiculous statements. He ended up telling me to "go somewhere else," which I promptly did. All in all, it was the worst and most bizarre experience I've ever had in a restaurant.
