As we always do, we order several things to share. We had fish cakes and also chicken with Stilton & wine sauce. Both were super tasty and the only constructive criticism I have is for the sauce with the fish cakes. It was fairly bland a could be so much better with something simple like the additon of peppercorns. The dessert special of bread pudding was tempting but it was late so we skipped dessert. Great service!

It must have something going for it, as it always seems to be full whenever I go there. The staff are friendly, and the owners lovely. They're constantly under-staffed, so the service can be a little slow, particularly at peak times. It's usually pretty noisy in there, with generic pop music coming over the speakers (particularly odd given the older clientele). The building itself is lovely - one of the oldest in Weston - and it's been turned into a restaurant pretty sympathetically, even if the tables are a little crammed in to make the most of numbers. There are fascinating photos of the history within the wider Weston context over all the walls. It's just a shame that the food verges on the mediocre. They do a reasonably priced set lunch menu, though the dishes are all uninspiring and predictable - and laminated menus are always a bit off-putting. It's definitely worth looking at their specials board, as that's where the more interesting food seems to lurk, though I had a slightly weird combination of apples and scallops which didn't quite work. And it's expensive too - their 'sharing' mezze platter was £18-ish, small and bland. The non-set-menu mains are all in the mid to high teens, which just seems a lot for the kind of food you'd expect in a basic pub. My gran lives in Weston, and this is usually where we go for lunch when I vist because it's the best that I've found - but I would definitely appreciate any other suggestions!

We stayed the night here and also had dinner. A nice touch was the owner ringing us the night before to check if we wished to dine because they were nearly fully booked. The rooms were really large and very well decorated, almost to malmaison standards but with a warmer feel. The food was very nice. Traditional but with a European twist - very nice lamb and steaks were had, along with a bottle of champagne to celebrate a friend's birthday. The owner came and told us all about the specials and the staff were attentive and friendly. Our favourite moment was when coffees arrived and we were presented with a 'coffee garnish' which was a small mousse type thing! I am dying to have an excuse to go back to Yeovil so I can take someone to stay here. Very much recommended.

You'd have thought being just up the hill from one of the biggest employers in the area with over 3000 employees it would be heaving. The last time I eat here was at a leaving do - I know I was a little bit late and you had my pre-order, but was there any reason why you had to cook it and then leave it on the hot-counter for me until I arrived? Nothing worse than dried, over-cooked salmon and prawn risotto. My theory is the chef is used to doing large banquets (judging by all the pictures of himself all over the restaurant) and thinks he's Ramsey. Hot tip - people who are number one rarely need to shout about it, especially in the restaurant trade. I fear the chef may have lost any degree of humility which would allow him to improve. Trying to be positive, the Ciabattas and salads are fine, but then you've got to be pretty special to mess that sort of food up.
