We wanted a new place with reasonable prices, and simple, fresh ingredients that weren't "fussed with" and were not vegan/vegetarian. Not easy, but we found Dig Inn. Wise choice! We got the Classic Dig - Charred chicken, roasted sweet potatoes, charred broccoli with lemon, brown rice, with garlic aioli on the side. My dining companion paid the ultimate compliment: "the chicken keeps getting better the more I eat it." My personal fave is the sweet potato. I'd like a bit less charring on the very fresh broccoli, but everything was yummy, even the brown rice. And very generous portions of everything, it's lunch for me tomorrow. A variety of sauce options, including ubiquitous garlic aioli, weren't needed since the food is delicious on its own, but I say go for it. And the menu gives calorie counts which would otherwise be a real pain to calculate. Well balanced flavors, not oversalted. Delivery was to the minute. Packaging is careful. As for ambience, we ate at home, but first I had a very friendly email exchange with a couple of questions - her thoughtfulness really encouraged us to order...and we'll be ordering again. read more

ORIGIN: DIG, originally founded by Adam Eskin as Dig Inn Seasonal Market, first emerged in New York City in 2011. Since then an expanding network has dotted the eastern United States, extending as far as south as Virginia. LOCATION: This location is on New York's East 52nd Street and is only open on weekdays. CONCEPT: DIG serves creatively seasoned, nourishing American home style food in a fast food, plant forward format. AMBIANCE: This location lacks a design aesthetic compared to other DIG locations. Outside of the pale pistachio tabletops, the counter of many nearly empty Staub pots, poorly lit kitchen, and plain walls brought to mind the starkness of a hospital cafeteria. FOOD: As always since I was first introduced to DIG last year during a Connecticut Yelp experience, DIG is a destination I look out for when traveling and looking for a quick, nourishing, and flavorful dinner. I was staying in midtown for a couple of days to accompany a friend as her husband underwent a complex heart surgery. Picking up dinner and bringing back to hotel room kitchen was ideal for our situation. That said, this location appears to get little business in the evening, likely primarily serving the decreased population of people who "work from office". As a result, it was clear in both appearance and taste that the chicken had been kept warm for some time, as it was not as moist as chicken dishes I have experienced at other locations. The custom bottled ginger mint lemonade appeared to have been sitting around too long as it was beginning to ferment. I did get to try the chocolate chip cookie as a gift from the person who worked the register on one of the nights. This appeared to be in effort to make up for the wait as the kitchen prepared mashed potatoes for the new crispy Chicken & Ranch plate I looked to try. The cookie was attractive and chewy, with flavor amplified with a sprinkle of salt flakes on the top. SERVICE: The service I experienced at this location was neither informative nor enthusiastic. The person taking my order was unable to tell me about the new chicken plates that were being promoted... just stared at me as if asking about the dishes was unusual. It seems this location may experience less interaction with customers due to popularity of pick up orders. TIPS: Restaurants that had primarily served office workers in many cities have been negatively impacted by the pandemic and subsequent normalization of "work from home". Looking at pre-pandemic photos of this DIG location suggests lines and filled dining tables. As this location does not appear to have fast turn around of dish components in the evening, I suggest choosing from the salad menu, such as the Avo Grain Bowl, at this location and choosing the online order/pick up arrangement. As I will be reviewing two other DIG locations this week, the variation of customer experience will be apparent. This is likely informed by available space and demographics of customers served, but may also reflect uneven or non-standardized operations. Anticipate this variation when choosing a DIG location. Despite these variations, you can expect a fast and generous dinner for a reasonable price (around $13 per person, without beverage). DIG offers catering. My company catered lunch from Dig Inn yesterday. I have not eaten here in a while and when I did a long time ago, most of the food tasted bland. Not anymore, they have really worked on the flavors and the food tastes insane. We had a nice spread of hot honey chicken, salmon, kale salad, fresh veggies salad, broccoli, mac and cheese and the sauces to go along are amazing as well. I had a really healthy and filling lunch of chicken, broccoli, kale and fresh veggies salad which kept me full till dinner. I hope we order here again. read more

I saw this place and was pretty excited to try it for lunch, but unfortunately it was a bit of a disappointment. The ordering process was rather confusing, as they didn't have labels for what each of the ingredients were, and the servers themselves seemed confused and unable to answer questions. As for the food, I did really enjoy the flavors in the bowl and the sauces, and the salmon was tender and delicious. However, they limit you two sides, a base, and a protein, and the price to add another side is pretty hefty (I think iirc $3 per extra addition). You get more value at places like CAVA where you pay the same amount, but can get unlimited toppings and really load up your bowl. read more

I hate to have to give dig a review like this but this location has been a huge let down. Their portion sizes being the reason for all frustrations. Sentiments are the only thing keeping people from realizing how awful Dig is becoming, at least in Midtown. I remember my first dig inn experience, I bet most people do because Dig was once a great deal and always had the best, fresh, healthier food options; much better than other quick style spots for sure. That charred chicken bowl with all the sides and sauces, the nice staff slipping in a free cookie... man, it was unbelievable! Those days are done- I havent been to many other locations in a while and Midtown being my home, I've ordered from this location 3-5 times, friends have too... I'm sad to report that $6 gets you half a small chicken breast, or two broccoli stems... while $16 gets you a bowl of rice with an equal amount of chicken and a sparse looking portion of whichever side you choose; they skimp on the sauce and overcharge for every single thing on the menu. The mac and cheese is dry af which is a shame because it would be great with some cheese sauce... he'll, give me Wendy's Gruyère sauce on top. The charred chicken typically comes with at least one inedible piece I give to the dog. The meatballs (best option on the menu) are small and come three to an order but always have at least one hard bit somewhere in the mix; (the sauce is fantastic but it's hot or miss how much you get of that) The bbq chicken can only be ordered as a side I believe and it's the yummy charred thigh with a tasty bbq sauce ... I enjoyed it The sweet potatoes and CA trots are both great and simple. The "best ever potato salad" - didn't eat it, instead I put it in the food processor with roasted garlic and stirred it in to a pot of instant mashed potatoes... so no, it's not so great as is. The burrata and tomatoes are good, I'm not sure it's worth the price and the same goes for the tasty feta watermelon The steak salad... needs more steak You get the pattern, I'm sure. I've tried almost everything they have to offer, even they're tasty ginger lemonade, and it's clear to me what the deal is (or lack there of) The portions don't fit the price tag, the quality, at least here, isn't what it used to be... and while it all seems to be the same food, it's not the same experience I once coveted in this city. Sadly Dig is going down on my list. I have tried it a few times and it wasn't bad but just today I went to get a side and brownie and was very disappointed in the quantity. Overall their food tastes good but I would say the amount given is not worth the price. I got a side of broccoli which looks great in the photos on the menu and filled up but in reality was less than half of the bowl. Def not worth $5. I also got the brownie and for something that is almost $3 was expecting it to be thicker and at least a good size square. Probably a three star when reviewed by New Yorkers-- and it's definitely lost some of its luster from earlier Digg Inn days. But success is tough master. They are a workhorse for the worker set, with long lines forming around lunch and dinner breaks, a generally efficient to go system, but the basic premise works: usually delicious proteins, healthy veggies, and fresh-ish options. Drinks have declined in options, and the amnesties, too. But for a quick healthy meal you can call this your backup friend: reliable, always available, and usually good for you. read more

Although initially skeptical of the reviews, I now agree that Dig Inn has flavorful and healthy foods. I really enjoy getting the brussel sprouts (and I normally don't even like brussel sprouts) and sweet potato with my tofu bowl. I think that for the price, you get more than enough food. I appreciate the health farm-to-table concept and the multiple vegetarian options to choose from. I read some other reviews about Dig Inn having slow delivery. I've been ordering on Seamless and I haven't had a problem, although I'm fairly close to the restaurant. I would recommend at least trying this location out, just maybe not when it's super crowded at peak lunch hour. read more

How Ordering Works Pick a base (rice, greens), pick a protein (charred chicken, herb chicken, salmon, meatballs, tofu), and pick 2 sides. Personal Favorites Roasted sweet potatoes - I'm biased because I love sweet potatoes, but Dig Inn also bakes them so well that they're always super soft with a bit of char. Charred Brussels with Honey-Chili Oil Sautéed Broccoli with Lemon Cauliflower with Garlic and Parmesan - I'm lactose intolerant but I'd eat this side dish any day Herb Roasted Chicken - personal favorite protein. The salmon tends to be a bit dry and bland. Extra History Dig Inn owns as 12-acre farm in New York, where they serve all of their grown produce within 48 hours of harvest. Dig Inn also buy from small-scale farms to support sustainable growing practices. Other practices include using ugly vegetables and using whole vegetables, from stem to leaf. This is one of the few Dig Inn locations that is open for pick up and delivery during the current pandemic. There've been a few issues over the last few months - including receiving delivery with part of our order missing, etc. - but the manager has been apologetic about the small mistakes and even threw in free dessert a couple of times. Yes, I'm a first timer. This chain has allures my taste buds for a while, and despite my hatred for chain-restaurants I finally decided to give it a try. I chose brown rice as the base, salmon as protein, kale and roasted carrots as vegetable options, and added avocado for an extra $1.50. The bowl was sizable and tasty. The salmon wasn't too dry, and the veggies very yummy. All for $13 including tax. I can totally see why this chain is so popular, especially for lunch. Now I'm a fan, too. read more

Love the healthy and delicious options at Dig. I prefer to order in person but due to Covid I've been ordering my take out through various food delivery apps. I decided to give Uber Eats a try. When it didn't apply my Uber cash to the order, I quickly canceled the order and wanted to place another order with my Uber cash. I called the store and spoke with Megan who confirmed my order was cancelled. I was checking my emails and saw Uber Eats sent me a receipt that I've been charged for my order because my order was already started. I called back and Megan picked up again. I explained the situation to her and she said she will call Uber to find out. In the meantime I was heading that way and was going to drop by the store. By the time I arrived, Megan told me Uber couldn't do anything. She honored my cancelled order after seeing I was being charged. She went above and beyond to help me due to no fault on Dig's part. Because of the exceptional customer service I'm going to be ordering from this particular location from now on and NOT through Uber Eats! Thank you Megan!!!! So I was pushed into Dig Inn by a very good friend on a random Saturday. "Just try it, it's good. It's like Chipotle". I was very reluctant because if you know me, I am not a fitness freak or a health fanatic. Oh? Egg whites and turkey for breakfast? Yeah, I'll go with the fried eggs and two sausage patties. Anyhow, I gave it a shot. I don't agree with some of the other reviews, you do not have to be into healthy food to enjoy this. The food here is high quality and also happens to be healthy. My first try was the spicy meatballs on top of classic brown rice, sides were string beans & roasted potatoes with the Sicilian roasted cauliflower. These meatballs are really good, it's lean meat with a good taste and a balanced amount of spice. Mix the sauce around in the brown rice and if you're a fat kid like me, you'll enjoy it. The string beans & roasted potatoes are very tasty, hearty but quite enjoyable. The cauliflower wasn't bad but I don't like raisins in my food, ever. I like raisins by themselves. The Lemon Herb Chicken here is really good actually and super lean. I recommend you get the Roasted Red Pepper sauce to go with it. The Wild Salmon Salad is also a unique alternative that not too many places offer. If you're a double protein type of person, you can also order the proteins as separate pints and get the grain or green separately. Cost-wise it's about the same as getting a plate but you'll get more protein if that's what you're looking for. If you're getting delivery, they are fast. First time eating at this chain and I wasn't impressed. Trying to eat healthy, and trying to eat healthy affordably is always a struggle in this city, but I don't think Dig Inn offers the solution. I built a bowl full of proteins and vegetables, ordered Chipotle-human-conveyor-belt-style. My salmon was completely overcooked, bone dry. The beets on the other hand were under-cooked, very hard, not appetizing. The cauliflower has raisins and capers, neither of which are my favorite thing and I didn't think the inclusion of both made any sense. The greens were wilted. The carrots were one of the bright spots, but were smeared with thick creamy harissa sauce that would have been fine if it hadn't been dumped on in such a large quantity. Also, nothing was warm. Maybe it's not supposed to be, but everything being at room temperature or even cold made the whole thing even more unappetizing. It was also $16, not exactly cheap considering the experience. The pesto sauce was nice, and service was friendly. I doubt I'll be trying this again. read more
