Didi is supervising and cutting along side of the mentee the whole time and following their work, to ensure your cut is to her satisfaction. No stylist wants you to leave their chair until you look and feel your best. This was my 2nd time being a model, I was in the chair for 1.5 hours. I myself learned a lot from this experience. Didi is very knowledgeable, hands-on and articulate in her teaching style. I haven't had a layered cut in a REALLY long time, over 10 years. I didn't know what to expect out of the service. But once I got in the chair and started talking to Didi, I felt comfort. I was prepared with inspo pictures (I highly recommend always coming with references for your stylist no matter how experienced they are). If you look at the pictures I have attached, you will see that we decided to do a modification of 2 or 3 styles. Curtain bangs with face framing layers, shaggy & wolf cut. All these styles were blended and connected well, to create my haircut. I hope this beautiful Frankenstein creation can be recreated in the future. I am very happy with the haircut, and I am always happy with the service provided by Didi and all her staff. Didi's passion shows in every aspect of the salon, her performance, the stylists she's trained and hired, all her employees, and the environment. The staff is also, always educating themselves and innovating. You can have all the tools, but without knowledge of how to use those tools, they and you are useless. &they know how to use every tool in their tool box. OK, so to start, I was faithful to my hairdresser for many years, but unfortunately our schedules stopped syncing after Covid and although she was amazing at her craft, I had to find someone local and since I was embracing my curls again after years of a Brazilian blowout, I decided to venture out and start finding a curl cutting stylist if that's even a term. I heard of the salon for many years, especially when I lived in the area, but it wasn't until my friend who has curly hair referred me to Brenda and told me she was the best she was not wrong, I met her. I have NO idea where to start! First and foremost, front desk staff are SO welcoming! Upon being greeted at the door, I was given information regarding their safety and sanitary COVID-19 policies. Masks are enforced unless you have proof of immunization on-hand. They also have you sign a policy agreement to ensure everyone follows protocol. Afterwards, they take your temperature and then you meet with your Stylist. We love a Sanitary Salon! Brenda was my stylist and I could not be any happier. About 2 years ago, I went to another highly rated salon and they completely ruined my hair. I asked for them to touch up my balayage and to go a bit lighter. I ended up with choppy highlights randomly placed around my hair and the worst part what was that the color was coppery (you can see it on the ends of my before photos). So, I was very nervous to let another Stylist touch my hair. However, after my consultation with Brenda I left feeling very confident in her and her skills. She also shared her IG page with me and I fell in love with her work. The entire process from consultation to actual hair cut/color day was super easy and I am so happy with my end results. Some fit else called this morning and asked if I could come in 3 hours earlier. EDIT I actually discovered this salon when my long time hairstylist, Katie, was working here. She eventually moved on to open her own salon and I bounced from salon to salon trying to find the right one. Fast forward to 2020 when COVID-19 was at its peak, and salons in San Francisco just weren't able to operate. Didi Salon was offering outdoor non-color services, and although I desperately needed some fresh color, I was also willing to take what I could get and booked a haircut with Didi. She was amazing, gave me exactly what I was looking for and styled it to perfection. I promptly started booking all of my future appointments with her, but as they were able to operate indoors again, her schedule got booked faster than I could keep up, and it just became too tough to get an appointment. That's what happens when you're amazing at what you do :-) I ended up having to switch to Salon Stilo in Burlingame, but will always miss Didi - she always took notes at our appointments, made sure she understood what I was looking for, and had the best intentions to keep my hair healthy. read more

I would give xero stars. I have been to Didi's 2-3 times and have had scheduling issues. The online calendar shows lot more availability but told the slots are limited when you call. I would not bother going to a salon that do not treat their customers fairly. When you call, some sort of profiling happens while the online engine is unaware of these characteristics. I have been going to her for as long as I can remember, at least 10 years now, and not once have I ever been disappointed (except when I moved away to San Diego and I didn't have her salon nearby anymore) When it came time for the biggest day of my life, I knew I had to have Lisa do my hair, there was no question. Our wedding was rustic romantic vibe and I wanted a hairstyle that was loose, wavy, but still bridal glam, and she absolutely nailed it! I used extensions for the first time to add some volume and Lisa made them blend so naturally! Julie is still a rock star. A Julie cut makes me look and feel cute which is a far cry from my usual feeling like a hunchback with a big hairy mole growing out of my chin. Come to think of it, Julie would probably style that hair and I would rock the hell out of that mole. True story: When Julie was still at Trio, I came in for a haircut after getting back from vacation. I wash my hair before haircuts (because making your stylist wash oily and unclean hair is cruel and unusual punishment) and used the leftover complimentary bottle of hotel shampoo. Julie noted that my hair looked dry and limp that day and I told her it must have been the cheapie/free shampoo I used that day. She told me to stop. Julie is not afraid of doling out constructive hair criticism. Noted. Fast forward to a few years later, I still had a few bottles left of that complimentary hotel shampoo so I used it up. I had the best experience during covid with stylist Nicole known as Nikki, but before I jump into Nicole review on the cut and style of my hair I want to talk about the environment. When you walk in there are two separate doors for entering and exiting, the Receptionist desk was fully protected and waiting around was closed off for the most part but two separate chairs that were socially distanced apart. While checking in the receptionist kindly asked me if I filled out the covid safety form (which I did prior to the appointment) then took my temperature and fully Sanitized Nicole's area. All of the stylists and customers were socially distanced while wearing masks. The shampoo area was protected with Fiberglass behind each sink. They set the environment to make sure that their customers let safe and I felt that when I was there. My experience with Nicole was amazing we talked about the style I wanted and she examined my hair to get a feel with what she was working with. She exceeded my expectations with the style and cut! My husband and I love it! It was so out of my comfort zone. I would highly recommend her and the staff at DIDI salon! read more

I have long hair, and wanted to keep the length, but left the rest to Logan. He listened and asked all the right questions. I know... long hair... you think to yourself, not a lot of options right? Wrong. A talented stylist (a la Logan) will make your long hair amazing. It's a beautiful cut, that frames my face so well. The layers are subtle, but my new do has a wonderful movement to it. Didi Salon is a great! Right away when I walked into the salon, I was greeted and was asked if I wanted a refreshment. I made a appointment with Nicole because I heard she was really good with blondes. After a couple of months of not coloring my hair due to being pregnant, I was in real need of highlights and toner to tone down the brassiness in my hair. I showed Nicole a picture of what I wanted, which she said is really helpful. So I would recommend doing that! Nicole did a great job doing my undercolor and highlights. Didi is great - and you can tell she is a hair expert! She got me the smooth, straighter hair I wanted without losing volume. And she did this by creatively using a standard treatment! Most other stylists just use treatments in 1 way, but it takes someone who knows hair, treatments and hairstyles and is able to innovate to fit each client's needs. On the day of a networking social, I realized that I was in dire need of a bang trim. First impressions were important, and I didn't think it would be a good idea to leave a shaggy mess in the minds of my encounters for the evening. After scoping out Yelp reviews, I settled on Didi Salon due to their stellar reviews and proximity to work. I was able to schedule a lunchtime appointment with Christina. She cleared up the hair covering my eyes, and I was back in the office in no time. A week and a half [and one rescheduling - which they work very hard to fit back into your schedule] later, I was back at Didi Salon with Logan, ready to transform the messy mop into a neat and stylish bob. In terms of prices, Didi isn't the cheapest. Definitely $$$. But it's totally worth it; you can go in for complimentary bang trims [even the one I walked in for prior to making an appointment for a cut!] and touch-ups between appointments. Let me start off by saying, don't get your haircut at the end of the day. Especially on a Sunday. Stylist are exhausted and just want to go home and I don't blame them one bit. This goes for this salon as well as any other salon. Sometimes we forget that hairstylist are people too with their own lives and plans. I was hoping to really love this salon because I have been on a search for a good hair stylist for about a year. When I looked on Yelp, there were two amazing looking salons that were closed on Sunday and Didi was the one I chose because it was the only one open on a Sunday and they were willing to accommodate me at the end of the day. Thank you for that. However, I don't think going at the end of their work day was a good idea and I have learned a valuable lesson that booking a hair appointment needs to be more of a strategic decision. It's not like getting your nails done where you can go anywhere. You need to do research, book in advance and book a good time that works for you and one in which the stylist is fresh and ready to work. It was POURING rain today so I decided to go about 15 minutes early. I wasn't greeted at all as I sat there waiting for someone to acknowledge me. They were all in the back, so I guess I understand, but there were stylist working that saw me that could have informed who ever was working the front that someone was waiting. The only reason I was acknowledged at all before my appointment was because a guy was paying for his haircut so I walked up and let them know I had an appointment. The hostess was very nice and offered me a drink. Moments later I was greeted by my hairstylist, Fredrick, who seemed more than friendly and nice. I don't usually like getting my hair done by male hairstylists because of a previous bad experience but I had to get my hair done before I leave for Cabo. I told him exactly what I wanted and showed pictures and he seemed to understand what I was going for. I had really long hair and was now going to cut it much shorter so this was a big deal. I wouldn't say that this place is all that posh or luxury because they didn't give me a scalp massage. He kind of rushed through my whole washing. He was doing a great job cutting my hair but, again, I felt like he was rushing through the whole thing. Cutting my hair really fast and pieces of other hair were getting in the way and he was cutting them anyway. It made me incredibly nervous. He then proceeded to rush through my blow dry and it was making my hair frizzy. Based on the pictures I showed him, I thought he was going to curl my hair and all he did was blow dry it. I would have paid for the curl since that's what I had asked for. I am absolutely disappointed with my my cut, as it looks nothing like the pictures I had showed him and they way he styled it, looks like something from 1997. Not at all edgy and modern like I had showed him. It is all subjective I suppose but I just wish he would have at least cut it like the pictures I showed him. He cut the hair in, so now the hair gathers around my chin which looks really frizzy and fluffy. I have had to wear my hair up because I can't just blow dry and go because it get's frizzy and makes my face look really full. This is all trial and error and I made mistakes as well, like scheduling my cut last minute. Fredrick was very nice but I just think I caught him at the wrong time of the day. Which actually is no excuse but it was a one time thing. There are 2 other salons I want to try so there's no use in going back to this one. read more

As an Asian male with distinctly stubborn and straight, stiff hair, I thought I'd follow the recommendations here on Yelp and see if Didi could yield its magic. Unfortunately, my results were less than spectacular. Even though I requested the stylist with the most experience and savvy managing young men's haircuts, I came away feeling unimpressed for the following reasons: 1) My stylist (who seemed funky herself and in tune with what I was looking for) lacked the skills to manage my hair. She relied completely on scissors (not clippers) to shape my 'fade' which resulted in a choppy and unruly look. When I suggested using clippers and a comb to sculpt the back of my hairstyle, she abruptly indicated that she didn't know how to do so. 2) The hair wash was lackluster. No head massage and the water wasn't warm enough. Not necessarily luxury. 3) The salon itself, although bright, is small, busy and cluttered. Their female patrons seem extremely satisfied, but perhaps that is their target market which leaves the market I represent uncatered. 4) The price was far too steep for a haircut that wasn't even discernable as a haircut. After spending $50 I had to get a haircut on the same day at another salon. Get it done right the first time or don't do it at all. For $50 I expect substance to accompany the fancy facade. read more

In a city with SO many salons, you would think I could just walk in and find one who knows how to cut my bangs. Not so much... Since moving to Burlingame this spring, have had several mishaps in the 'hood with this mop o' mine, specifically the bangs. These places will remain nameless, as I am extremely picky about my hair, but let's just say I looked like a 2nd grader after they were done with me. Enter Didi. Did my Yelp research ahead of time, doing a search on the desktop for "bangs" in the city of Burlingame. Logan at Didi was definitely the winner, with several hits and glowing reviews. Was able to get an appointment the same day as I called and he trimmed my bangs with no problem at all. He did such a nice job, in fact, I came back late last week for a haircut. It was time. Am a big fan of his calm demeanor and consultation. He's able to suggest things without being too pushy. And he's a great listener, which is helpful in any profession. We had great convo while he was doing the cut, about the new restaurants in the Peninsula and traveling in the Midwest... nothing too scandalous, like the latest with his baby mama or dating woes. It's always fun to gossip at the salon, but not with a relative stranger, right? Shampoo/haircut/style runs about $75 + tip. Pretty much par for the course in SF or the Peninsula at a NICE salon. Sure, you could get a $40 haircut, but do you want to take the risk of it being crappy? And I love the fact that I can walk here in 5 minutes. 5-stars to my new favorite B-game establishment. Gulp! This is really hard to write but you Yelpers led me astray! I read about Christina and booked an appointment for cut and color. Cut ended up being fine. Color was a nightmare. I've been getting highlights for 20 years (Yes, I'm that old) and I've never had them burn. She was pulling on my hair with such perfection and wrapped them so tight that when the bleach went on it burned. And, the strands were so fine that it barely made a difference. Very disappointing for the price. And, while Christina was friendly, I certainly had the impression that giving a lot of direction in my cut or color was not welcome. read more

Didi used to be one of the top stylists at Trio. She left about 6 months ago to open her own place, coincidentally right down the street from Trio. Didi Salon is located directly behind the Gap store on Burlingame Ave, nestled between the parking lots of Gap and Pottery Barn. The buidling is a very nice and quaint cottage-style store front. Plently of parking on both sides, and a great public lot across the street with meters that are only $.25 per hour with a 9 hour maximum so you can have lunch and browse the Ave. before or after your appointment. I've been going to Didi when she was at Trio for about 4 yrs now, I've recommended her to many friends and family, none were ever disappointed. She specializes in coloring and highlights, I've had more than several dates and girlfriends visit her. Her new place was completely designed by herself. It is was of most technicalogically advanced salons I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. Most of the walls are lined with LCD or Plasma screens, 2 Dell internet stations for browsing sit in the middle of the store, everything from the mirrors, to the furniture, to even the restroom screams hightech/design envy. Even the trash bin in the bathroom has a motion sensor that pops open when your hand gets near. The coolest thing in the entire place are these 4 pillars that represent each stylists' station. Built into each pillar are drawers that slide in and hold all the stylist's tools and the blow dryer, brushes, combs, and such. When closed, it makes each station seem very neat and clean. You need to see it for yourself to get the full WOW factor. I had a simple haircut by one of the other stylists, while Didi was busy coloring and highlighting my girlfriend's hair. Although a little pricey, average for a boutique salon in Burlingame, the quality and customer service makes the experience well worth the wait and price. I paid $50 for my haircut including wash and blowdry. My girlfriend's color, highlight, styling, and blowdry came out to $235. The official grand opening for Didi Salon is slated for Saturday May 19th, until then they are only set up for cash and check. I'm sure credit cards will be accepted after the grand opening. Thank god I only had to go across the street for it!!! I was surprised to hear from Hourig directly one evening. She was kind enough to leave me a voicemail that she no longer was at Didi's. You can only imagine the wave of panic in my voice when I heard the first part of her voicemail. Luckily I had enough sense to listen to the rest of it to find out she moved just across the street. I can't say enough good things about Hourig. She is one kick ass girl who rocks with her cutting skills. Like I said, I'm one of those girls who will follow a stylist to the ends of the earth. Nightmare nightmares. Drama drama. I used to be a fan but no longer. I have been to the salon twice. The first cut was nice, $65 for a trim is a bit pricey but the result was good, and I liked it. My only feedback was that they should've cleaned the floors between each client. It's a little bit gross for me to walk over other people's hairs in my flip flops to get to my stylist's chair. The second time.. ::ARGH:: My haircut was terrible. It used to be super easy to style and deal with, now I have to spend 25 minutes fussing with it every morning. The worse thing is certain hairs are cut too short and they stick up and no amount of hair gel could help. It looked WORSE than before it was cut. When I scheduled for a recut I specifically told them that it was the only time I could get a cut because I am going out of town for a work conference soon. And what did they do? They cancel my appointment! After I shifted my whole afternoon plan for the appointment (because they are super hard to book in a few days notice) I understand the hairstylist's son is sick, I am okay with that. That's a legit reason for canceling my appointment, but what I am pissed is that I could've come in earlier like the hairstylist wanted me to and I told the receptionist that. The receptionist said no it's fine, I can stick with my 4 o'clock. Then I checked my voice mail at 3pm (she left it at 2:30) from the stylist asking me to see if I can come in earlier. I called back the same receptionist guy said the stylist had already left. And of course, being a brilliant receptionist that he is, he didn't apologize for his screw up and tell me just call the stylist instead because he can't deal with it. Luckily Renee was reasonable and said she will refund my money so I can go elsewhere and get my haircut done with someone else in time before I leave town. UGH it's a huge disappointment. It's a total bummer because as someone who has her own small business in the design field, I love the look of the salon and I met Didi once and was really impressed by her. ----------- I did get a follow up email from Didi, the owner as well as getting a full refund. so the rating is back to 3 stars. read more
