OMG! The best Italian Ice Cream in the neighborhood or whole of NJ!!!! A tiny place (no sitting) just a vendor window. They been around for 106 years - who can beat that ??? I hate to see them go. I hope the next owners keep up the good excellent reputation that has built over the years!!!! The current owners are friendly. The ices is so flavorful. Only 3-4 flavors at a time and whatever specialty of the day. Come on over and you will understand why. I got brain freeze not from the price but because it was worth the visit, the taste and the hype!!! You will not be disappointed. Parking is street parking but easy to find, the line may be long at times but this just shows you how special they really are. Their closing hours is not predictable because of its popularity, so they stay open only until they run out!!! So come early!!! read more

For some reason my review is gone and most of my pictures except 1 but I have been a loyal customer for years. This business has been in their family for over 100 years. At 100 years the street name was changed to their name DiCosmo Place. This is probably one of the top Italian Icee places in the country quality wise. Their Icees are made the old fashion way in wooden barrels and with the original basic type of machinery. The only thing that has changed decades ago is they don't use ice blocks. They originally had only 3 flavors years ago but have expanded their flavors. Why is it so good? It's all made in an old fashioned way by using old time machinery. Their ice has a different texture and fluffiness to it. The fruits were hand squeezed. Not sure if it's still done that way nowadays but they use real fruit not syrups. Their main icee varieties were lemon, orange and orange pineapple. They have added other flavors and rotate them. You'll usually see a line down the street but it moves well so stay and wait for an amazing icee of your choice. They are only opened during the summer because they basically work on their front porch. If you're in the area or within about 30 minutes IMO I consider it a destination Italian Icee place. I've never had another Italian icee to compare to the quality and fluffy texture of theirs. I'm reposting my last picture that was left up to go with the review. I had a craving for something slushee and instead of heading to the local convenience store I came here. There is a young man who serves you from a barrel. Which is cool because it's homemade. Prices are $2 for a small, $3.for a medium. I bought the pineapple and it was good not as good as the lemon but wow $2 is a little too much for a tiny cup. read more

My friend was born in Elizabeth and this was a spot he would always come to. The lemon probably is the best flavor, unfortunately they was out of it. I did have the Mango, which was pretty good. DiCosimo's is an authentic Italian ice stand located deep in the heart of the old Italian neighborhood of Elizabeth. It's a block from Spirito's Italian restaurant (which is located at 714 3rd Ave). Look for a green shack on the corner with an Italian flag flying out front (see pic). This Elizabeth landmark has been open since 1915, and it looks it. They still use the original barrels to make the ice. This is the real deal. The best. Tastes like it's made by an old Italian guy in his basement. it probably still is, but I don't know for sure. Lemon and orange daily, plus one or two rotating special flavors--pineapple, grape, coconut, chocolate, etc. Happiness is finding pits in your lemon ice. Open May through September. read more

I feel guilty for every five-star review I've ever given to other Italian ices. * This is the ONLY place I have ever seen all natural colors. The orange ice was a pale orange, the color of orange juice, not clown-nose fluorescent. * The texture is perfect. A little icy, mostly smooth. No chunks of ice anywhere. * Whatever size you get, the friendly woman will top it off for you. * Okay, I waited to save the best for last, and also because I want to write entire novels about how good the ice tastes. Seriously, I cannot eat ice anywhere else again. I will drive 10-15 minutes out of my way anytime I'm in the same county just to stop here. I had two flavors, orange and lemon. First, the orange. The first bite instantly changed my mind about Italian ice for good. I'm used to it being almost like a lollipop, a sweet representation of the intended flavor that may or may not slightly remind you of actual fruit. Two thoughts flooded my tongue and overcrowded my mind: "This tastes exactly like orange juice." "No, scratch that. This tastes like freshly squeezed ORANGES." It really did taste like dozens of whole oranges were squeezed directly into the mix this morning, and I had a scoop of frozen oranges this afternoon. Every bite reinforced this notion, and I found myself lamenting having gotten two flavors, because nothing could top this experience of orange juice on ice. Then I got to the lemon. I am a citrus freak, and the sourer, the better. After about three spoonfuls, my mind was clear of all but one thought: "I am sucking on lemons." My mouth is watering again as I search for the words to convey how awesomely, juicily mouth-filling the authentic lemon flavor is, and I'm stuffed with Teixeira's pastries. But I would find room for another pint - no, quart - of this ice. The lemon started to melt as I got toward the bottom, and I slurped everything to just overwhelm my mouth with lemon. I found myself licking the Styrofoam in a vain attempt to coax more flavor out of it, as if lemon ice would magically bleed out of the plastic pores and feed my addiction. I am hooked. I must return. I've still yet to try the lemon and the chocolate at DiCosmo's. Regardless, this shop gets my highest rating. Every day there are only four flavors. Each one gets a churn. And when it sells out, it's gone. Typically lemon is always one of these. It's the flavor that started it all, and arguably the one for which the shop is famous. My first visit was late in the day and they had sold out. My second visit, the case price of lemons was prohibitively expensive. On that visit I had orange instead. Seriously, it was like eating a refreshing version of fresh squeezed orange juice. It had all that vibrancy and acidity that comes from taking a bite into whole fruit. I had never experienced an Italian ice like it, and I haven't had one its equal since. This place is so good that it has me looking to route all my air travel out of Newark just to give me a reason to make a return trip. Should you be flying in or out of EWR I highly suggest a stop here. I'd even consider taking a cab out should you have an extended layover. Don't miss it. I'm a relatively new adopter, but have made up for lost time in the two years I've been coming here. No pretense, great family atmosphere, easy parking, and you're close to several other Elizabeth food legends-Tommy's and Jerry's for hot dogs, among others. But it wouldn't matter if the ices weren't world class-I've never had better. The flavors are vivid and bright, the depth of flavor is like diving into a cold quarry pool, and the sweetness is perfectly balanced by either acid or spice. Man, this is one random ass, old school place. It is basically a shack down on a corner in Elizabeth where Italian ices are sold out of huge barrells outside by some very nice proprietors. So yea, maybe nothing too unusual. They make only 3 flavors: lemon, orange, and one rotating (grape when I was there). Prices are very low both for personal sizes, as well as pints. There were a couple of people just hanging out too, as others left their cars running to come and grab some ices for their families. I found the huge dog pacing next to the place from behind a fence endearing, and combined with how nice the owner was, there was something very Rockwell-ian about DiCosimo's. True to NJ, the place that looked like it shouldn't even legally be opened served up great stuff! The lemon ice was up there with the best I've had. Not too sweet, not too watery--like goldilocks would say, juuuust right. I'm not a fan of anything orange flavored but actual oranges, but the orange ice was good as well. The grape ice surprisingly was not my favorite (lemon won), but it was still great. I found out their kids also run an ice place over in Far Rockaway as well for those who would like to try them closer to NYC. But if you're in Elizabeth in the summer and want dessert, I'd say this is a must; it is really the perfect accompaniment to Spirito's down the block! read more

I really like this spot. Located right down the block from Spirito's, it's a great spot to grab dessert after having some pizza. They usually have three flavors available, which can be a drawback if you are a picky person and only like certain flavors. The ices are scooped out street-side from metal buckets. Understand they make what they make and when they are out of it they are done for that day. Homemade Italian ice does not get better... We buy the pints, take them home and mix them with vodka. Funny thing when you are having a party and people ask you if you have DiCosimo's Italian Ice before they answer you. First time here. I will be going back! It's all hand made and ABSOLUTELY delicious. I had a combination of Coconut (it tasted like coconut milk) and Mango. Smooth and almost creamy. Our family has been going to DiCosimo's for 4 generations. I struggle separating it from separating it from dining at Spirito's - but for the purposes of this review I will. It's simply a landmark. Homemade Italian ice...good flavor variety, generous portions, and inexpensive. My first memories of DiCosimo's are from when my grandfather (then a detective for EPD) would take me during the summer. Each time I go back, it's as if it was still 1970-something.
