I finally tried Dick's Drive-In last month after my partner, a Washington native, insisted it was a rite of passage. Those burgers were hot, juicy and satisfying. I genuinely can't remember if we got fries (apparently my brain checked out the moment the burger hit), but Washington soda just tastes better. This Wallingford outpost of Dick's Drive-In is packed almost every night in the summer. It's conveniently located near the I-5, along a busy stretch of NE 45th St. We stopped by around 9pm after a trip to Vancouver and tried their cheeseburgers (regular, special, and deluxe) as well as some fries. The milkshakes seemed to be really popular as well, but I wanted to save my stomach space for some Molly Moon's (which was also down the street). Our cashier was really kind and helpful, and walked us through the differences between their burgers. I really liked my deluxe burger out of all the ones I tried, but you cannot beat the deal that is the $3.25 cheeseburger. I was told Dick's is Seattle's version of In-N-Out and I can definitely see the resemblance. They have a delicious mayo-pickle relish sauce that is sweeter than it is tangy, but the acidity is a nice balance to all the grease. I will say, however, the fries were a miss. They came limp and soggy and our fingers were slicked with oil after grabbing a few fries. Overall, our total about out to be about $36 for 6 burgers and 2 fries, which is an incredible value. Standard Seattle Dick's. The staff are always nice and helpful when I have a question. It's a drive in so obviously it's to-go so you can eat in the car, take home, or sit down on a nearby bench. I like their chocolate and strawberry milkshakes and today finally tried a sundae! For sundaes you can choose any of the ice cream options and get one topping. I ordered a burger, fries and ice cream. The burger and fries just weren't my jam. They were very soggy and soft. Maybe this is how some people like it, but I just didn't love it. I love a crisp burger- a bun and patty with a little bit of crunch. But this was more soft in consistency. The fries were also limp and just not my style. The ice cream was fine and I enjoyed that it had a bunch of topping options including my favorite, hot fudge. This is my fave burger place of all time! I know other people are into their In-n-Out and other burger chains or non-chains, but Dicks burgers have always won my heart. I've tried both the Deluxe and the cheeseburger and they're now my go-to. The bread has always been soft and warm, the beef patty is just the right thickness and it's flavorful and the condiments are just the right amount. With all that said, everything just works well together. Every bite is so scrumptious! Most other burgers are either too oily, too salty, have too much sauce or not enough sauce, etc. I also love their fries and their milkshakes! Went there yesterday for dinner as a friend of mine told me it's a tradition to get a bag of Dick's as you come to West Coast so got me 2 plains Cheeseburger wish were delicious sadly enough tho Fries were very very soggy . People at the register were very nice and energetic and you could see they like their jobs . Not much place to sit also mostly a counter with a couples chairs but still definitely worth the experience. A truly bright spot in the world. Dick's Drive-In is someplace I wish I'd heard of sooner, and wish was at bare minimum closer to where I live. Let's start with the food. They've got a menu with limited variety and sizes, because they know the strength of their high quality food and portions. Their burgers are small, but fresh and more filling than most ANYWHERE! Their fries are hand-cut and cooked with sunflower oil, so expect real fresh potato flavor with a hint of sunflower seeds. I'm fairly sure I've never encountered fries like that. But their shakes were the standout. With only the basic three flavors, they impressed with the low price, high quality, great flavor, and thickness, being hand dipped and whipped. Which brings me to my main positive about this place, cheap prices. It was estimated $3-$5 for any of the burgers, $3 for their one size fry that is substantial enough, and around $3 for their shake. However, that is essentially it. They've got soda, but there was a tax on soda with sugar, and I have no idea what the context is for that. Their service is incredible. As I ordered, the food was placed in front of me. But don't misunderstand, they are always making food, and you're always getting fresh food. They are just busy, and also perfectly understand their demand. So they are ensuring they always have enough fresh food, so that you can have all your food by the time you're done ordering. As for the employees themselves, they're quiet and hard-working. Now, atmosphere is crazy. My friend walked to stand in line, and very loudly and ecstatically asked if we'd time travelled due to this looking like an old drive-in with cheap prices. (But clean, not literally an abandoned old drive-in. He was buzzed and bewildered.) For me, I did my research, so I wasn't shocked or loud. (I also don't drink, so I was not buzzed.) But I was impressed at the pleasant atmosphere, especially considering one of my favorite songs of all time was playing right as I walked up. There is no seating, and no indoor area. That is to be expected, if you ever have heard about a drive-in from your grandparents. My friend did not, so we sat in the car and he was disappointed until taking a bite of the delicious food. Also, they have a huge parking lot. What else can I say? They have some of the highest quality food you'll ever have, with probably the cheapest prices anywhere right now. Fun fact. THIS Dicks Drive-In is the very first Dicks Drive-In! It's true - "the morning of January 28, 1954, the first Dick's Drive-In opened for business on N.E. 45thStreet in the Wallingford District of Seattle" (From the Dick's Drive-in website) So this particular Dick's is kinda historic. Many of you know I love my history and..burgers. That all out of the way, Dick's strongest draw is that it's cheap. Yeah, in my visit I got a couple of deluxe's (Double cheeseburgers), a shake and fries for about $20. From there Dick's goes a bit limp (no pun intended). additional condiments are $0.20 each. I understand the extra asking price but it's still kinda lame when at other places you can load up on ketchup to your content. Consistency is a bit off. One deluxe was soggy and not as hot. The following one was significantly better, but not great. The fries were also just alright and not crispy in the least. The Shake was cold and tasted ok but was soupy and had not thickness to it. So overall it was pretty flat. I've had worse burgers, and many may well know you're coming to Dick's for a quick and cheap burger fix, that you take right to your car or to the curb and chow down. I would almost compare it to the size of a regular McDonald's hamburger, but better of course. No tomatoes too. We also tried to order one burger with no pickles/relish but they said they don't take special orders (huh?), so you can only have it their way. The beef patties are definitely fresh. As I understand, Dick's is a Seattle icon so I knew I had to stop by one day to try it out. Finally that day happened and we visited the Wallingford location. It's got that 1950's style drive in vibe and it is literally a stand where you walk up and order. The menu is pretty basic and they don't/won't customize your order. Whatever it says on the menu is what you're getting (so no excluding mustard, stuff like that). The prices are surprisingly cheap in this day of inflation so it was a pleasant surprise to be able to get some cheap eats! I got a Deluxe, fries, and a chocolate shake. One other thing to note- a ketchup cup is an additional charge. The food overall was good. The burger was tasty and the shake had a nice thick texture. Was not a huge fan of the fries, being a little soggy, but overall a good meal and good value if you're coming in knowing that it's fast food and you're in the mood for a greasy burger. read more
