So we're sitting at another bar when someone says "we HAVE to do karaoke". I fire up Yelp, do a search, and this place pops up. "There's no way there's a place named dickweeds", I said to myself....so I called. "Weeds" said the girl who answered. "Seriously? The place...is named Dick Weeds?" I asked. "Yep. The owner's name is Richard Weeds." she replied. "I'll validate that later. Says here you have karaoke..." "Yep, starts at 9:30" "That's all I need to know for now." and I turned and announced we were going to "Dick Weeds"...and people looked at me like I was nuts. Address loaded into various GPS systems, and we were on our way. Now...imagine your stereotypical townie dive bar. Maybe 10 or 12 regulars in the place. Lighting's pretty dark. Plenty of open tables. Clearly not a place on the hot list in downtown Mt Clemens... ...now imagine 30 or so people walking into that bar from a comic con, complete with a few "names" (guests from the con), 6 people in full Ghostbusters outfits, and all louder than hell...and you can imagine the looks we got. It was like Weird Science when Gary, Wyatt and Lisa walked into the Kandy Bar... However, once we took over the entire back half of the bar and settled in, and the waitress realized we were strapping in for a great night of drinking and fun, we couldn't have asked for a better night. It was the karaoke DJs first night, and even though he didn't have some of the songs we were looking for, he was willing to listen to us as we walked him through how to find, and download, what we wanted. And yep, the owner's name really is Richard Weeds, and this really is a fun little place to hang out. You know it's been a good night when you wake up the next morning to Facebook friend requests from the bartender and your waitress waiting for you. Great selection of booze, beer selection is what you'd expect at a place like this, and the locals are friendly. Can't ask for more. Well, you can, but then you'd be That Guy.

It doesn't feel thrown together at all. The finishes, the vibe, even the way everything flows... it's just nice. And the outdoor patio?? Huge. Like, you can actually breathe out there and not feel packed in. I love that there are different levels with bands and different energy depending on what you're in the mood for. That said... the upstairs is LOUD. Like borderline "I can't hear the person next to me" loud lol. Maybe I'm just getting old but wow. Drinks are where they shine. Stick with beer or whiskey and you're golden. Food used to be rough, not gonna lie, but I gave it another shot recently and it was actually really good this time, so that was a pleasant surprise. Service has always been solid for me. Nothing over the top, just consistently good. Overall, it's one of those places you go knowing you'll have a good time, even if it gets a little chaotic. I'll def keep coming back.

Eastside Tavern, also known as The Basement Bar and Frank's Eastside Tavern, is somewhere you have…read moreto visit at least once. Originally a farmhouse, a basement was dug out in the early 1900s to create a bar. The ceiling is only six feet high, and is smaller than the average basement. During Prohibition, it operated as a speakeasy. In 1933, it became the first establishment in Macomb County to receive a liquor license. From that point on, it officially went by Eastside Tavern. The tavern is now run by fourth-generation owner, Heather DeBruyn. No one has lived in the house since 2017, but "the basement bar" is alive and well. Since its opening, Eastside Tavern has featured a limited food menu. The burger is the most popular menu item, often hailed as one of the best in Macomb County. There are a few variations on the menu, all made with a half-pound patty. The bologna sandwich is another popular item. My personal favorite is the quesadilla. All sandwiches come with a basket of chips, and pepperoncinis are available upon request. The chip and pepperoncini combo is jokingly referred to as a "salad bar." The history and vibes make Eastside Tavern one of a kind. Live music takes place every Saturday, and raffles are occasionally held on Wednesdays. When you go, be sure to ask to see the apron.

We had a cheeseburger and a fried bologna sandwich, and both were legit. The burger was cooked perfectly, but did need a little salt and pepper. The bologna sandwich on grilled rye was a little sweet, but the meat was nice and crisped and it was delicious. You get a basket of ripple chips, peperoncinni by request. The music is loud and the service is solid, you will have a good time here. Just watch your head!

I really wanted to like this place…read more I came here on New Year's Eve and they had a free buffet, which honestly set the bar pretty high. Simple food but done well -- a sub, stroganoff, salad. Nothing fancy, just generous and genuinely appreciated. Between that and seeing all the events at The Hut (bands, brunch, paint & sip, Super Bowl parties), I fully planned on coming back. Unfortunately, this return visit changed my mind. I ordered the turkey Reuben with onion rings. The onion rings were cooked so hard they lost all flavor, and the turkey was smoked but extremely dry. To make matters worse, there was a small piece of blue plastic or bristle in the sandwich. Service was polite, but uncomfortable at times. The older man -- who I believe may be the owner -- lingered very close, seemed shaky, and poured drinks far stronger than intended. I usually appreciate a generous pour, but these were unbalanced and not enjoyable. When the bill came, there was a cash vs credit price option, and we were told we were the first guests to use the new system. Even so, the total still didn't match the menu prices we ordered from, and that wasn't clearly explained upfront, which made the experience confusing. Ambiance-wise, it's a classic dive bar -- no complaints there. Live bands, lots of events, and a hole-in-the-wall feel. That part is honestly the strongest draw. For anyone unfamiliar, this used to be Mangan's Irish Hut for years. The original owners retired, someone new bought it, and now it's just "The Hut." The Irish Hut signage is still on the building, with BBQ signage in spots as well, so it feels like the place is still finding its identity. If I'm speaking directly to the owner: there is potential here. The event ideas and community focus are great. But food consistency, drink balance, menu accuracy, and clearer communication all need attention.

I feel a similar sense of guilt about how I've treated this restaurant. I've been here since Covid, but I should've updated my review. While I didn't like how they handled the pandemic (Faye acted like there was no pandemic), the food has always been amazing. And, it still is. I'm not happy that they don't have sandwiches anymore, unless you count hamburgers. But, I understand businesses need to simplify to stay profitable. I don't think lack of sandwiches is going to be a problem if they keep making the burgers this good. The beefiness is profound, and it shows that they are using fresh, high-quality meat. The mushroom and Swiss burger has a stack of sautéed mushrooms and a generous amount of Swiss. I really appreciate the waitress asking me first if I wanted mayo on it... mayo would've taken away from the robust flavors. I actually kept going "mm-mm" after each bite. And, look at the ridiculous amount of fries in my picture. These are seriously good fries. I do want to order the fish and chips next time. My daughter got them, and I'm glad she was willing to share. The whitefish has a sweetness you only get from fresh fish. And, the breading is crispy, and not the least bit greasy. My wife said she wasn't hungry (though she did have a bite of everything we ordered), so she ordered the cream of broccoli soup. It was wonderfully flavorful. As with everything else we ordered today, we would be happy to order it again. The service was excellent, and I don't mind the no-frills setting. There's no way you'd expect an old school bar to have food this good. Coming here during happy hour also helped. A strong Moscow Mule cost $10, and my 22 ounce Guinness only cost $8. Sorry, Your Mothers. I definitely won't neglect you for so long next time.
