Sorry! There will be no Part 2 of this review as Yelp was contacted and asked to have it removed. *Shocking* I provide honest reviews of businesses based on my personal experiences only. To summarize what was said in part 2 of my review, I do not recommend a Deva Cut to any woman who has what's referred to as 4C hair. It does not translate well and is not worth $135. My hair was butchered, the dialogue between myself and the owner was unproductive and she brought no resolution to my concern regarding my horrible experience. I did not receive a consultation beyond, "How are we cutting your hair today?" Issues with heat damage that were discussed via email prior to my appt were not addressed and my head was covered in a white film. I went to my barber to get the cut corrected, used a curl defining shampoo and eco styler gel to set my curls. Uncomplicated and turned out beautifully! Deva cuts seem more appropriate for women w/ 'S' patterned, wavy, spiral & coily textures; not kinky textures. You decide!
PART 1
Anyone who knows me personally knows that I take EXTREME pride in supporting black owned business, ESPECIALLY b.o.b owned/operated by black women. As a woman who has worn her hair chemical free for over 10 years, I was elated to come across Diaspora Salon, while searching for a stylist.
I spent literal months on the salon's website,FB, & Insta, reading reviews on Google and Yelp of course, and also looking at photos. I decided in spite of a few unfavorable reviews, I'd give Yasmine my business anyway. Several ladies seemed satisfied with her work, so why not?
Because Yasmine's rules about the types of hair she is willing to work with are so specific, I made certain that I read, re-read, highlighted and underlined everything that she said. I even emailed her with photos of my hair stating that I had SOME heat damage and based on my photos, could she give me an idea on pricing etc. I sent 5 photos of my hair. The only reply I received was, "Thank you for your email. Deva Cuts are $135." Like, what about the pics of my hair and my conversation about the portion of my hair that's damaged? Nothing!
I followed up with another email requesting to book an appointment with Yasmine and also explaining my issue with dry scalp. Yasmine's detailed instructions stating not to use ANY OILS on your hair in preparation for the service was clear, but I wanted to know since I was unable to use oil, were there any alternatives to hydrate my scalp? In a reply email, was told to book the appointment through the salon's website and was given some info on shampoos and conditioners that may help with the scalp issue and was reminded that ANY OILS IN MY HAIR WOULD EFFECT THE OUTCOME OF MY CUT AND WASH & GO. So I did not use ANY oils and moved forward in booking the appt.
Fast forward to my appointment - I got there at exactly 2PM (on time) and Yasmine was still working on a client until about 2:18. No biggy, I had time; however, given her strict tardiness policy, I thought she would've been ready as soon as I got there. After finishing her client, Yasmine asks, "How are we cutting your hair?" I showed her a pic of myself from when I used to wear my hair cropped curly and natural. After looking at the pic for a hot second, she said, "OK!".
She draped me and got to cutting. Didn't do a consult. Didn't examine my hair...nothing - Just started snipping. I'm thinking...ok, she's a pro. She's seen the pic, she's got this. The snipping lasted for about 15-20 minutes. After that, she passed me off to her assistant to get shampooed. After a series of shampoos and conditioning, the assistance sat me back in a chair for Yasmine to put some curl defining product in my hair and resume cutting. It felt like she was putting sooooo much product in my hair - globs of it; manipulating the hair with her hands, in order to achieve a more defined curl pattern.
I was then placed under the dryer for about 30 minutes. While sitting there, I touched my hair in the back and it felt super hard and crunchy. I touched the sides, they were completely hacked off. Touched the top, that too felt hard and crunchy and my hair was not defined in the front. Now, I DID ask for a tapered cut, so I was expecting my hair to be low on the sides, but she completely hacked them. My sides had curly roots, so she could've cut less to make the curls stand out. The sides weren't damaged. As I mentioned in the beginning, I told Yasmine I had previous heat damage, so I totally expected parts of my hair to removed, but she left the front of my hair sticking up like a picket fence!
After coming from under the dryer, I still hadn't seen my hair, but by the feel of it, I knew it was fucked! I stopped myself from overreacting and let her finish the styling portion. Maybe there was an additional step she needed to take in order to achieve the desired look I showed her I wanted (tapered and curly).
