I have been to this salon twice, it was also my first time at a natural hair salon. I had an overall good experience. The Salon is small but comfy. All 3 hair dressers are very knowledgeable which I can appreciate. The first time I went I got a wash and go. It came over very nice, it was soft shiny full of body and very defined. My hair is kinky curly 4a/4b so I was surprised to see my hair so defined. However, because of my specific hair type, this style did not last very long for me (which I expected) I started to have frizz around day 3 and I wore it out for about 6 days completely. The second time I got a twist out. Again my hair was very soft and defined. My hair is natural thin so she had used flexi rods on my twists (which I did not mind). This style lasted me an entire 9 days. Now that was to my surprise. And the good thing about this style is that the older it is the bigger it gets which is what I want ...VOLUME! This salon uses high end products that are great but a little to pricey for me to keep in my regular hair regimen. But definitely worth it if your getting your hair professionally done. I would recommend this place if you are a lazy natural and or would like to experience things you can't achieve at home on your own. Their prices are fair considering they are using high end products and the time to put into these styles. Oh and the best part they have a coupon for first timers that "check in" on the yelp app. It's not promoted to my knowledge I kind of just stumbled across it. Parking is ok. The deva cut was ok with adjustments, and she was nice, but after 3 times, it seemed she was not actually listening to what I wanted but rather had a set cut. it was a bit pro-forma. I personally think this salon is over priced for the service you receive. A couple of months back I went to the Deva Curl salon in New York and only paid $110 for the DevaCurl signature cut and I loved my hair! I paid $140 for a signature curly cut at Diaspora salon and to be honest it wasn't worth $140. When I arrived at the salon Yasmine, the salon owner, asked what I wanted and I explained. She immediately turned me away from the mirror and began cutting. RED FLAG #1: At the DevaCurl Salon you are facing the mirror so you are aware of everything the stylist is doing, which is something I really like. Yasmine began cutting and I reached to touch my hair because it seemed like she was cutting a lot, which she was. I told her not to go any shorter than what she had already done. After the cut her assistant washed/conditioned/styled my hair. RED FLAG #2: With this service you don't get a deep condition. I believe the assistant said it was an extra $35 on TOP of the $140. BRUHHHH At the Deva Curl salon in NYC the deep condition was included and made my hair feel amazing! After my hair was styled and cut I noticed that my hair was uneven I asked Yasmine to even it out, but it was a half-done job. She then asked if what she did was better. I just said yeah because I was over it at that point. **Disclaimer -- I didn't inform Yasmine that I was unhappy with my hair because I didn't want her to attempt to fix it. I just knew I wouldn't be coming back so I paid and left. ----------- If you live in the DMV area and want a DevaCut I recommend booking a MegaBus/BoltBus or Train ticket to New York. 1) It's cheaper than Diaspora Salon 2) You get a FREE deep condition. 3) The stylist EXPLAINS EVERYTHING SHE'S DOING. 4) The haircut I received was AMAZING. I spent a lot of time trying to learn about the perfect shaping cut for curly hair and found that "Deva cut" seemed to be exactly what I was looking for.... After finding Diaspora salon in Baltimore I was really really excited to be able to achieve the look I was going for but was deeply disappointed after my visit :( The salons website lays out their very precise styles of hair they work with and emphasize curls, curl style, curly cuts and the branded certified "deva cut". The website tell you that you MUST detox your hair, use a clarifying shampoo and only use specific products before a deva cut. I followed all the steps. I requested Yasmin. But when I arrived Leah said she was going to do my hair. Leah was really friendly and easy to talk to. The issue I have is that I was charged $140 for a specific deva cut (deva cuts specialize in cutting curls dry one by one to get the perfect shape) BUT Leah just gave me a very regular cut. She cut my hair like any hair dresser has by sectioning it off and cutting it in chunks. NOT WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR! When she began cutting my hair and it wasn't what I expected I asked her why she wasn't cutting the curls one by one and she said there's lots of ways to do a deva cut . NOT TRUE. If you go to a certified DEVA CURL/CUT salon- you should receive the service you paid for !!!!!! My cut did not have a good shape my curls were bluntly cut and did not sit around my face or head well like a deva cut is supposed to . I was there Oct 27 in the morning. It was my first and last time at the salon. Kay was very friendly the entire visit. Yasmine, although she encouraged me to ask her questions when we started, was very dismissive after she took me out of the hair dryer. She really did nothing to my hair but apply the styling products. I felt as if she did not want me as a client and she has gotten her wish. I regret leaving a tip but I thought more about Kay when I left the tip than for Yasmine. I hope she gave Kay the tip. Will definitely no return. read more

While the atmosphere, salon and conversation with Leah were nice, I did not like the results of my trim. I went in to receive a trim but unfortunately my hair was cut and not in an great way.My hair was chopped/significantly cut! I thought that because I received the curl discovery (which I should not have changed my mind and gotten after speaking with Leah once I got there) that my curls were just extremely shrunken. NOPE! After washing my hair a few days later (mind you at this point I couldn't even put it in a real ponytail), I determined that it was actually CUT, and again VERY choppy. I have short pieces all through my hair- this was later confirmed by another stylists. It's a bummer because I did my research and I drove all the way to Baltimore for what I felt like was a good salon. I reached out to her via email a few days later to express my concerns but I have yet to receive a response. So I would like to warn others that if you're expecting a trim, be careful here. IF YOU HAVE NATURAL 4C HAIR DO NOT GO HERE. They do not know what they are doing! These women advertise that they do natural textured hair and that they celebrate natural hair but all they do is immortalize the negative stereotypes of textured 4C hair in this salon. I had two encounters with the salon. The first I had gotten hair advice was given to me as Yasmine proceeded to say that my hair could have a "different" appearance if I used a certain product. My spidey senses went off at the time, but I thought that she was just giving hair care advice since she "cared" for you hair. Second encounter....ALERT. ALERT! WORST EXPERIENCE of my LIFE!!!!! Booked for a wash and go ...3 hours later with minimal product placement and lack of..and no water and thrown under the dryer..She brings Yasmine over to look at my hair and then they walk of whispering to each other. I asked if there was problem and the stylist tells me that she has to do it AGAIN!!!! I was livid at this point! My spider senses went off again and I just wanted to leave but I also needed my hair done for my birthday so I let them. She washed out product re-placed it and after another 3 hours the same result!!! areas of crisp cracked white and areas of NO curl! Now disgusted and beyond livid . I was told by Yasmine its "MY HAIR" LMAO!!!!!!! 6hours later I left the salon with my har washed out twice and then it took her over a week to return my money!!!! This was my 1st visit to this salon. From beginning to end, I could not have asked for a better experience. The appointment booking process was seamless, and the telephone consultation about my color and cut desires was thorough. There is ample street (.50/hour) and rear lot (complimentary) parking, my appointment started right on time, and it was just me and my amazing stylist, Leah, in there. The salon is very, very clean. She was very detailed and have educated me thoroughly on how to keep my curls flawless and healthy. Leah called me to notify me that my appointment would be changing again, I definitely understand with everything going on and appreciate her courtesy to call and speak with me. When I arrived for my cut, I walked into a clean salon with a wonderful atmosphere. Hand sanitizer was readily available and the space was not overcrowded and abided by social distancing guidelines. I love my haircut and the color Yasmine gave me! If nothing else, I will be a walking ad for her skill as a hairstylist. Friends, and I would agree, the cut suits my face and the color is subtle (which is what I wanted). DevaCut: As for the practice of DevaCut, I'm not sure what she did was a typical DevaCut. Yes, she cut my hair when it was dry but the attention to detail was lacking. It wasn't a curl by curl cut which is what I expected from the videos she posted on her website. I wonder if I hadn't said I'd be okay with a tapered cut, would I have gotten more of a specialized cut. It was very auto pilot once I said tapered... I know everyone's style is different but the DevaCuts shown on her website and others I've watched are different then what she does. Single Process Color: When it came to the color, I had a very specify image in mind. I provided her with photos of the color and she matched it accordingly with the dyes she had. Simple and easy process. I liked that she seemed more excited about my color choice then I was. I got the feeling that not many get color or the color I chose. It felt nice to have her take pride in the way it looked because I knew she cared about the outcome, it wasn't just a way to get extra money. She walked me out to see the color in natural light, I thought that was really sweet. Consultation: There was little verbal discussion about my hair type or pattern until after the cut was complete and that came from me asking about what water-based products to use. I would have liked to go over the new client form I filled out with her. Instructions on website: I made sure to follow all her instructions. To be honest when I read them I thought of Seinfeld and the Soup Nazi. :-) Those that disagree with her method-- go somewhere else! When you go to an expert, if they give you tips and you fail to follow them you shouldn't be shocked when the results don't come out the way you want them. I liked that she gave instructions on what to do beforehand. They were easy to follow and let me experience my hair in a new way. Will I follow them after the visit? No. I'm not overly concerned with defined curls, I just want healthy hair. But for her to do her best work if it means me doing some prep work, I don't mind. Yasmine is very knowledgeable and friendly... I think if I was a regular, we would have had better interaction. That being said, if you're looking for a neighborhood, community feel salon this would be a great choice. For someone like me who only gets her hair professionally done once a year, it was a good pick for such a drastic change. Will I go back: Cut, no. Color and other services, yes. I am very happy to have found the Diaspora Salon! I was referred to the salon from a friend then researched the salon on my own. I was a "new" and transitioning natural with lots of heat and chemical damage. Yasmine was amazing!!! I was so nervous about getting my hair done. I winded up getting the big chop, where she removed all of the damaged ends. She took the time out to explain the entire process (from what products to use to how to maintain my curls). I hate to have to leave a bad review, especially since I had such a great time at the salon. Both stylists were warm, welcoming, friendly, and just down right great people to talk to. Unfortunately, Yasmine, who cut and styled my hair, isn't as skilled at styling hair as what I am used to. Having moved from California three years ago, I was very reluctant to get my hair done out here as Cali has some of the best stylists in the country! And that includes both Nor and So Cal. When I first got my hair cut by Yasmine, it wasn't laying very well on my head and it appeared that there were more layers in the front than in the back. I called her a week later and explained the problem with my hair and luckily she said that would be an easy 5 minute fix. However, when I went in, it was clear that she really didn't understand what I meant and in addition, she seemed to be clueless about how much my hair shrinks when it gets dry. I tried to explain that I just wanted a few more layers in the back so it didn't look like I had flathead back there but it is now appearant that she had no idea what I was talking about. Now that I am home again and my hair has dried after her touch up, it looks like she just went in and cut off the top of my hair in a generic afro style. That doesn't match the bottom of my hair, which is in a sholder length bob. To be honest, I look pretty ridiculous with what looks like a badly shaped afro. In addition, this style doesn't fit my soft, spiral curly hair type at all. Not sure how anyone could make this mistake unless they were completely clueless about the hairstyle I was describing. And, if that was the case, I wish she would have been honest about that instead of going in and hacking off the top my hair! Oh well. It will grow back again in a few months but I will certainly NOT be returning to Diaspora. Hair Rules in NY will be the only ones allowed in my hair from now on. It's just too bad that I have to walk around with bad hair until then. It is now clear to me, and what I wish I would have known before, that the DevaCut specializes in afro's and that is the only hair skill these stylists have perfected. Just as a word of caution, a DevaCut stylist may not be aware of what you mean by layers in a style outside of a standard cut. read more

I have been on the search for a natural hair salon that did Deva Cuts in Baltimore since I was no longer down to drive to D.C. to get my hair done. I lucked up and came across Diaspora Salon and started to check out the reviews and pictures. Now let me be clear: I don't play when it comes to my tresses and I have no problem paying for services as long as the services are on point. If you are like me, this is the place to go. Yasmine is extremely thorough when it comes to the shears and knows ALOT about natural hair not from YouTube but from going to acquire education from various courses. She made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in and her assistant was SOOO kind too! I'm not new to the DevaCut experience but I have not had another stylist do this cut in years so I was a bit uneasy but once Yasmine began her consultation and hearing my wants, I was completely at ease. Her salon is beautiful; really clean and colorful. I had some great conversation that morning with everyone inside of the salon and when I left I gave Yasmine a hug not just because my hair was banging...because it was...but because she made me feel important; not just coins in her pocket. Like Aja P, I will not return to this salon. Another reviewer described Yasmine as direct, but that was not my experience. First, she schedules appointments that she doesn't want to stay for. I am very flexible-Just call the customer and ask to reschedule. When I arrived, I heard her customer say something that lead me to believe Yasmine must have been talking about me before I even walked through the door. Sorry/Not sorry for making the appointment YOU set. Against my instinct, I stayed and also had my long hair chopped off to a very short tapered cut-This haircut did not come without a side of shade and resentment. We discussed layering and styling. When she was finished, my hair could not be braided. Direct is not the word I would use to describe Yasmine. My thought is that she is satisfied to have a small group of high-paying customers and does not have the work ethic of the typical stylist. I would post a lesser star if I could. Basically I never comment on stores because I have better things to do, but this place is odd to me. I was quoted a very expensive hair color quote (500-900$) the store owner said because I have a lot of hair and there is some color corrections, she said that is her price, and that she wouldn't be able to do it until couple months later (September). I went to another multicultural hair salon, I got everything done for 200$, and everyone comments and loves my hair! I guess I don't understand why you claim your a natural hair salon but you overcharge for the same reason why you have business. But also don't give a reason why that is your price point. They also take forever to get back to you on apppointments, and overall have a very non friendly tone. Not impressed and will not ever call! read more

I had the BEST experience with Yasmine as my stylist ! The salon was professional .. I did not have to wait (although I was early). Yasmine was extremely professional and personable. She answered all of my questions explaining how products worked in my particular hair .. she took the time to explain how to use a product (which I had used prior) properly for my hair situation. She debunked many of the myths about natural hair care and it made sense. I had never achieved a successful Wash and Go and did not believe it was possible .. but she proved me wrong ( happily). I have gone to the DevaCurl salon in NYC for years, and found this salon through their website. I honestly think Leah at Diaspora did a better job! Typically with a curly cut you will end up losing way more length than you actually want to lose, but Leah kept the length and shaped the layers so that my hair looked years younger and healthier. She also helped me figure out the right product to use to moisturize without weighing it down. I've washed and diffused it several times since the haircut and it looks better every time as I get better at doing what she said!
