Eric and crew are experts on native plants. The more I read about "lawns," the more I cringe every time I pass one on the road. Lawns, being non-native plants, they are animal-torturers -- ironically, lawns passively mow down animals. Think of lawns as efficient animal-disposal machines. Do the planet (and your neighborhood) a favor and make your land friendly to critters by insisting on native plants. Native plants and animals evolved together over millions of years, so when one's land doesn't have native plants, wildlife starves, all the way up and down the food-chain. Lawns are gasoline- and water-guzzlers. The lawn industry uses up a humongous amount of petroleum products merely in lawn-mowing. I am a "Gone the Lawn" person now. Lawns are appropriate ONLY under certain circumstances, like one is a croquet fanatic. I never knew that gardening was year-round. April is the month everyone waits for, but planning starts the previous autumn. Eric's physically-demanding season winds down in mid-November, so let him see your plot before the snows hide the land. Autumn is the best time to start brainstorming the design phase for the following April. Eric and crew are not only landscapers but artists.

It seems like everyone in Oshkosh just collects stuff to be picked up, so they not only overcharge, it takes forever too. I was complaining about just that while shopping at Atomic Katz, and the owner (having forgotten the name of this place) gave me a super vague description of how to find it...so of course off I went, seeking the utopia of shoe repair. And after a brief detour to the army surplus store around the corner (thanks, GPS), I found it! The guy at the counter quoted me something like $7.75 a pair (I, uh, had 3 identical pairs in need of heels...) and said that they'd be ready the next day. Now, that's not quite the fastest shoe repair I've ever experienced (see Nu Life in Memphis), but that's a far cry from the 2 weeks I was quoted just about everywhere else! Plus, they speak English here, which is a new thing for me. I came back two days later and my shoes were ready and waiting, all fixed up for another few months of rough wear. So while I'll definitely save up my shoes before making another trip, Franwerks is for sure my go-to shoes repair place! If you don't want to buy new shoes, bring your old ones here!

The Juniper incense provides a blanket of warmth for the senses--what a wonderful welcome on a winter's day. My friend, a practicing shaman, has a birthday coming up and I buy the incense ($5/20 bricks) from Santa Fe for her, along with a Juniper smudge stick ($5). Katy displays jewelry so it easy to view the pendants and earrings and bracelets...too lovely. She also has stunning vintage silver and turquoise pieces, as well as simple traditional ghost beads. The silver and coral jewelry catches my eye. Ojibwe woven baskets will make a nice gift. Katy is always friendly and encourages customers to take their time and appreciate what she offers. It is easy to move around in the store. Everything is in display cases or shelves on the wall--and just enough, not overwhelming, definitely not gathering dust, and no narrow aisles. Her little dog is sweet and lucky dog has a beautiful turquoise on his collar. She keeps recent issues of Native American newspapers by the door for $2.00. What a gift this independent business owner has created on Monroe Street. I'll be back for a blanket.
