They are the best at what they do. Replaced the battery in my 88 year old father's Tissot while I waited safely in the car, and even cleaned the grime from his wearing it constantly! While I was there, I asked the knowledgeable and friendly woman helping me if she could buff a few scratches off the watch I was wearing, and she was happy to oblige. I was dang diddly frustrated after getting a pricey Dr Who clock that was broken. It took forever to find replacement hands. Then I clumsily tried to put them on and hang the awkwardly built piece. The Ace on University wouldn't help me and others referred me there. The woman at Dykemans took the time to fix everything! Charged almost nothing and gave me tips about the hands and hanging the piece. She did it all while I waited. And they had WiFi. I needed to get a watch fixed that the hour and minute hand fell off, as well as the battery replaced. I called around to several places and all of them told me they have to send the watch out to be repaired. This is not what I wanted, after my 3rd or 4th call I contacted Dykman's Time Shop and was told they fix watching in house. I was more than excited to say the least. A few weeks went by before I actually got around to take the watch to be fixed. A special date (anniversary was coming up), that I thought would be the perfect time to have the watch fixed. I stopped in on a Wednesday, 2 weeks before I would need the watch fixed. There was a few people already waiting in line which gave me a chance to look around the cute little watch shop. When it was finally my turn to be helped, Rachel explained the process and gave me an estimated date of when it would be fixed. Of course this date was further out than I had expected, which was my fault for dragging my feet on actually taking it in to be fixed. I explained the story behind the watch, the sentimental meaning and reason why I was hoping to have it fixed by xyz date. Rachel said she would do everything she could to make sure that watch was fixed in time. Gave me her card and told me to call her weekly to check in. To my delight, on my 2nd call to Rachel, the watch was fixed and I was able to pick it up before the special date. When I stopped in, Rachel was very helpful, and made me feel very special. She was equally excited and happy that I was able to get the watch in time, as well as congratulated me. I plan on going back for any of my watch repairs as well as the next time I am looking for a high quality watch. read more

Excellent watch shop! From the moment you walk in you're treated like long lost friends and family. The proprietor is knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and funny. Great selection of Hamilton, Tissot, Victorinox, Bertucci and house name watches. If you like Citizen watches then don't bother going anywhere else, he has it right there. Just ask to see a watch, try it on, gawk at it, you're totally free to enjoy yourself there with zero pressure to buy. If you're looking for higher end mid-range watches, this is absolutely the place to go. Highly recommend. It was a fun experience as opposed to a standard jewelry store where they just stare at you while you're looking at a limited selection. I might have just had bad luck with the watches that I had trouble with, but I still wasn't very happy with the service here. I brought in three watches (Fossil, Skagen, and a Charles-Hubert pocket watch); the first had a dead battery, the second had a split strap, and the pocket watch had a broken crown. Paul, the young man working there, is very knowledgable about watches and clearly knows his stuff, so I have nothing but praise for him in terms of knowledge. However, I was very disappointed that they could not do anything in the shop about a single one of my problems. Right away, I was told that the Skagen and the pocket watch had to be sent back to their makers for repair (even though I've been told that Dykman's is a Skagen-authorized repair shop). As for the Fossil with the battery, they kept it for a week, only to tell me when I came and got it that one of the screws was in too tight, and that it would have to be sent back to the maker as well! My frustration comes from feeling as though I had wasted my time in visiting a watch repair shop that, evidently, cannot repair watches even to the point of getting a stuck screw loose. The other two watches are sentimentally valuable to me, and I would have preferred a local shop to fix them (whatever the cost might be), but I was never offered the option. At this point, I can't say that I have any incentive to visit this shop again. read more

I replaced the battery (at a local jewelry store) in an old, beloved Swatch, but it kept losing time. Like, minutes on the hour. I was at the UW Children's Hospital and figured I'd get an expert watch-person's opinion of the problem with my watch. Turns out, it wasn't the battery (I was hoping it was, I love that watch) but an older watch whose part had just worn down. The woman working at Dykman's hooked my watch up to some machine that tested its ... ticker? Pulse? She was sympathetic but also very sure that the watch was the problem. I hate to slam any small business, but I had a horrible experience with Dykman's. All because Dykman's repair person screwed it up. Bottom line: I'll never trust Dykman's again, because they cost me a lot of money and gave me a major headache. I dropped off my watch with Dykman's and was promised a two to four week turnaround period for the repair. However, it's now three months later and I have not received my timepiece. When I questioned the owner about this (after 3 months) he told me that his supplier couldn't get the part and that he couldn't be bothered to track it down himself because he had plenty of other order to work on. I want to support small business like this but I would never use these guys again. read more

I had bought my husband a "Kenneth Cole" wristwatch from Macy's as a present and when he needed a new battery for it, we took it to Dykamn's where we got lectured for not buying a watch from a company that specifically makes timepieces. Um, I didn't appreciate getting that lecture. I went to Macy's looking to buy a nice present for my husband - and I thought a watch would be perfect, and it looked stylish, too. So sue me! The watch works fine, and still works and even better than other watches we have here at home that are made by "watch making" companies. And speaking of fine "watch making" companies, I needed a new wristband for my Skagen watch. The watch was designed in a way to look stylish, but it actually was a design flaw that made a weak point for the writstband, which had worn through. I took it in to Dykman's to get a new writstband, and OK - I happen to love colors and because I love colors other than boring black or brown, I wanted a red wristband. Apparently, that was asking for too much and apparently to Dykman's, grownups don't wear colorful wristbands. My only choice was a black wristband - so a black wristband I got. I was told that was all Skagen had to offer as it had to be ordered from Skagen (that's how special the watch was), but I'm suspicious about that. Then, during the former occasion, I took in my "Nine West" watch - the scandal of it all! This time, it wasn't a Skagen - so I knew I could safely ask for a red wristband. I did get a red wristband - but later, when I got some time to think about it and examine it more, I think I got a child's wristband. I mean really! Is it so hard to have a variety of adult wristbands to choose from? Is it too much to ask for something other than black, or brown? The last straw was when I got a battery put in the Nine West watch after the above lecture on the inferior quality of timepieces made by companies that don't specialize in making watches and clocks - and suddenly, the battery didn't last very long at all. At first, I thought - darn fashion company for making an inferior watch - but then I went to get a new battery put in just to see and funny thing, it kept on ticking and still works to this day (although maybe there was a slight point in the lecture, as the hands are a little bit off, but it still works. I cannot even tell you where my Skagen watch is, as the stupid design flaw has rendered that watch unwearable and missing in action to this day.) read more

After one of the guys took a look at it, he called to let me know that it needed manufacturers parts replaced and recommended that I look and see if it was still under warranty. I'm a fan fo sho! I was a little skeptical seeing the Yelp reviews: 1 star, 5 stars, 2 stars, 5 stars. Inconsistent much? I decided to stop by and get some help replacing my watch battery. In about 60 seconds the man behind the counter had swapped the batteries in two watches I had brought in (one with a working battery, one with a broken battery) and handed them back to me, free of charge. They have a nice selection of affordable watches (Hamilton, Victorinox, Tissot, Citizen, et al.) Nothing too pricey. Really good service and they are very knowledgeable about watches and their historical precedents. They have a decent selection of watchbands, not a lot, but you know, it's a small store and most of their floorspace is dedicated to watches. It would be nice however, if they had a selection of more "handmade"-looking watchbands. While their collection isn't super high-end, it is definitely the type of place you would go if you were a budding watch nerd, like myself. read more

On January 5th I dropped off 5 vintage watches to have the bands changed. That's it. No complicated repairs...just bands. After nearly three months with no returned telephone calls I stopped in on March 30 to pick up the watches. One of the watch bands still had not come in.....but for about 90 bucks they were willing to order one that I did not want. Additionally....one of the vintage watches was dropped off with the original box....which they lost. Without so much as an apology, they said they "would look for it but I don't know what happened to it." Strictly speaking a vintage watch with it's original box and instructions is much more valuable to collectors and/or resale than without. I guess I should be grateful they didn't lose the watch. But losing the original box is careless and sloppy. I'm a small business owner and really support other small businesses. I am not happy about writing a negative review. This is/was just plain unacceptable. read more

Name a time piece and these people will find the time AND a way to repair it, upgrade, basically they will bend over backwards and forwards to ensure your customer satisfaction. When I moved to Madison a few years ago one of my cuckoo clocks had been damaged and Dykman's was recommended to me. They repaired the clock as good as new with no "rigging" with spare parts or anything. They also tuned up my other cuckoo clock. Since then they have replaced many a watch battery no job is too big or too small and they always do it with a smile on their face. I have several Oakley watches and Oakley used to insist you send their watches back to them for repair. It was a hassle and an utter BS process. Thank goodness Oakley stopped making watches and requesting to fix their own brand I took my favorite Oakley watch to Dykman's and they not only put a new battery in it they managed to get all the way inside the face(no small feat with these intricate watches) and were able to get the broken seconds hand working again. When I got the watch back from them it worked for awhile and then oddly the watch hands kept skipping past 6 o'clock. I took the watch back in and they apologized and got it fixed right away as the hands just weren't on tight enough. They stood by their work and they even offered before hand to try to find me similar watch hands if it had been an issue with the hands. I have a limited edition watch with a special leather strap and as a preemptive strike i asked them about the strap and when it will eventually wear out. The woman working happily assured me that they can find me a special strap should and when the day comes to replace it. I have been to Dykman's many many many times and I always receive consistently good service so I have to rate them a five. read more

We used to shop here more and in the past, have purchased a number of expensive watches from them. (To me, any watch $500-$1000 is expensive but that seems to be the price point of the watches we like). Every time these watches need service/battery - I usually take them back here. New band, etc... The shop is really old-fashioned. It's decorated so dated, the people have been there forever, it's what it is. However, they do carry an extensive collection of upper end watches, and they seem to know what they are talking about. But the past 4 times I have went there, I have left feeling like "this is the last time" I will be coming here. I have to find a new watch place. I had to go back there after I had initially made this observation, because my uncle had a unique watch and I needed to get the band replaced and back to him the same day. They did it, but the whole service thing was just "weird". I saw a band for my watch while shopping there, and wanted to come back with my watch and see it together. The band they had wasn't the right size, but they offered to order the right size no matter, and hold this one until I got back to look. Days later when I got back with my watch, they had sold the other band. Well that didn't help, because now I didn't know if I should wait for that band to be restocked or purchase a different band. I left with noting. The guy helping me with the bands about drove me up a wall, he was so slow and almost seemed incompetent, but I'm sure he is not and I have been on this mission to treat everyone with kindness, so I just powered thru the session. I've always felt that everyone there is a bit condescending or kind of the type of people who insult your intelligence without really saying it matter of factly. A few weeks later my Skagen cheapie watch needed a battery. I took it in there hoping to see the watch band I wanted in stock for my other watch, and get the Skagen battery changed. She changed the battery and then told me that my watch is have a problem and that I needed to send it to Metro for it's lifetime coverage warranty repair. She gave me the papers to include and what to say that was wrong with it. Then she spent about 20 minutes trying to sell me an more expensive watch to replace it - ahhh no. I don't have the money for a watch right now, or I would have come in shopping for a watch to replace the $85 Skagen not a battery for it. Well my watch came back from Metro, the $8.50 I had paid for shipping also had an additional $10 due charge for the battery change. The watch never had any other repair. The technician noted the battery was the problem. Now I need to send a check to Metro to cover the difference. My watch is working fine now, so I assume they are correct. This is frustrating. Stuff like this is annoying. There are so many places to buy watches - they need to step up their game. My husband wanted a Citizen watch from there, but it was so expensive. He shopped around online and found it for less than half. I know brick and mortar stores cannot compete with online, but even if they discounted their MSRP watches, I still think they would make money and encourage the customer to purchase it locally. It depends on who waits on you. At first I had a younger gentleman who repaired my watch and only charged me $21. Then I left but decided my watch was too big and went right back in and was waited on by an older gentleman. He charged me $25 to remove one link. This was interesting because I had just heard the female employee charge a woman $5 to remove a link because she had "been there before". I had just been there and had my watch repaired. But the older man said since I didn't buy my watch there or have it sized there before, it would cost $25. That's why I say it depends who waits on you how much you will pay. Recently my large and valuable Chelsea clock conked out. A friend recommended taking to Dykman's because they have access to excellent repair folks. I did this. It wasn't cheap, and it took a while (shorter than expected, however), but when it was returned, I could see that it had been completely cleaned and with a new mainspring. The clock now keeps time to within less than one minute a week. I paid a significant price, but I got what I paid for. read more

Do NOT go here for watch adjustments or battery changes!!! I brought in my new watch they took 1 minute to remove 3 links and charged me $15! Seriously?! She didn't even mention the price before she did the work. Definitely ask the cost first! My good friend found her watch battery on Amazon for $3, but they charged her more than $10 for the same battery. Maybe I'm not well versed in watch mechanics or I'm crazy cheap, but this seems like highway robbery. She also took all the links out of one side so it slides around on my wrist. I was very disappointed with the experience I had with Dykman's. The person who initially helped me was very nice and informative, but it went terribly wrong after that. It was decided by the watch master that my antique pocket watch was not worth fixing due to cost and parts availability. Understanding that, I left the watch with them to have a crystal placed to prohibit damage to the face. I was told it usually takes two weeks but would most likely take up to four weeks because they would be closed for a couple of Saturdays. After not hearing anything for 6 weeks I called and left a message asking about the status of the watch. No one ever returned my call. A week later I called and got the watch master himself. He could not tell me the status of my watch or even whether it was in the store or at his home where he often does repairs. He said he would give me a call the following day. He never did. At eight weeks on a Friday I called and left a message that I would be picking up my watch on Monday or Tuesday the following week regardless of whether it was completed. I received a call back that the watch had been done for several days but they just hadn't gotten around to calling me. When my husband went into the store to pick up the watch he waited patiently as others ahead of him were helped. When his turn came, the staff member couldn't readily find the watch. Once she did, she didn't even complete the transaction before flitting off to assist an associate with their customer. I never received an explanation or any kind of apology for the lack of communication and time the watch was kept. No break on the cost of service either. The watch was also returned to me with the back of the case shut so tightly it now cannot be opened to access the movement. As a new customer and new watch collector, I expected at least a competent level of customer service. They seemed to go out of their way to make sure I would never come back. read more
