This is one cool pawn shop was my first impression when I walked in. This place has a basement full of items along with the first floor. This place is very cool and it was like going to a museum with all the old and odd items on display. Who ever prices the items obvious shoots for the moon and everything is super expensive to be haggled down to a better price it looked like. After seeing how super expensive the prices were the woman asked me if I would help her get a huge vase looking thing down from a high shelf, I said after seeing how expensive everything is I'm not touching anything in here, see my pictures. If you are looking for an engagement ring, shop here first and you will save thousands of dollars...seriously. I went in to get a price on a ring and bracelet that I wanted to sell and then found a gorgeous diamond ring that I acquired for a fraction of the price you would be charged at a typical (extremely overpriced!) jewelry store. Great find. I came across on ebay, I wanted a USA seller, never know on ebay but I came across a ring that was white gold and vintage. My husband is a jewelry manufacturer in Los Angeles, but can't make vintage art deco obviously and I wanted one for Valentines day, he checked it out and said go ahead and buy it. I got three bids for my gold, silver and platinum. Ricks was $604 higher than the lowest bid. The second highest bidder didn't think one of the bracelets was gold. Trevor tested it and it turned out to be gold. Trevor saved me $347. They gave me the highest bid over the phone. I got 80% of the spot price for 14K gold and 85% on an 18K piece. This is a really unique spot on Willy Street. I dropped by one day because I was curious about what they had and I wanted to learn a little bit about silver. I was a little intimidated because I have been in some pawn shop spaces that felt kind of weird. For the most part I didn't get that vibe here. The folks behind the counter were friendly and very patient in answering my questions. They have all kinds of stuff here ranging from old guitars, statues, to jewelry and coins. Sadly scammed. Brought thousands of dollars worth of Victorian/Art Deco/Native American jewelry in to sell and should have walked out when I was told my jewelry was "nothing special," but he'd "buy it to take pity on" me. Humiliating. Won't go back. I came home and thought I'd check eBay and Etsy for similar items just in case. Well, I missed out on $thousands$. Very sad, but I've learned my lesson. And his female assistant is hyper as Hell. Be careful! She had no problem throwing my expensive, late 19th jewelry around like it was yesterday's trash. She was irritated with me the entire time because she wanted to go home and was scratching my scrap gold to test it like a complete fiend. I finally had to say, "Easy with that please!" Ugh. From the outside, you'd never guess how much this place holds. It's a modern-day Olde Curiosity Shop. I could spend hours just looking at stuff, and they have several unique and functional pieces I plan to add to my collection over the next year or so! Yeah, so I've lived in Madison for 13 years now. I've been to Lazy Jane's and the Willy St. co-op more times than I can count, but when it comes to the smaller shops on Williamson St. I never have really taken the time to stop in. I guess I felt like I needed a reason! Well, last week I had a reason to stop into Rick's Olde Gold, located across the street from St. Vinny's. I had picked up a copper antique in Door County and wanted to know if it was possible to get it polished up because I was giving it as a gift to someone. I love a good thrift store, and I had never thought of Rick's as such, but I will now! There are so many interesting items in that shop, not just antique or pre-owned jewelry, but antiques, funky art pieces, and other random objects of intrensic value. I stopped in on a busy day (the appraiser was in) so at first I felt like I may be in the way, but once I got someone's attention I was able to ask if they might have a way to help me out. I was told they were busy but they'd do their best to get around to it. I asked them how much money I should bring back with me when I picked it up and Rick said it'd be on the house because he didn't get around to helping me right away when I came in! Uh, awesome! Guess you don't have to be at a big box store to find great customer service, and, my gift looked AWESOME! (Way nicer than the $15 I had paid for it!) Looking forward to the next time I'm in the neighborhood, never know what I'll discover next. read more

Olde Gold must mean old outdated gold market values. Another reason I will never sell my gold there is because of this.. I needed some quick cash. I went to him with some gold pieces(bits of wire & some casting grain(I'm a local small time Jeweler with a shop at home)) worth about $30.00. His employee wrote me a check but filled it out wrong. I recently sold an engagement ring and they paid me a significant amount more than all the places I went. The place is not elegant by any means but I must say they have quite an eclectic mix of items... and personalities. In all it was an experience itself and entertaining as well, apparently he was expecting me to bring him food of some sort and I'm not sure if he was joking...so bring some food when you go just in case. Fair scrap price but not nice the nicest experience. Young guy working is really nice but a bit rushed. The owner insulted my disabled mom telling her to walk next time she comes in; she had her walker which she was sitting on when he came in. He said this after she made it clear she didn't want to talk about her condition which is no ones business. He also asked if her legs where broken. He was trying to be funny and I was able to have good conversation with them after his comment but it was not a nice way to start what we wanted to be a long term relationship with a jeweler. Also, many pieces of jewelry where called trash and worthless by the woman working there. Given, many of them where worthless but they didn't need to be called junk and thrown around. It was not necessary and rude. I guess my honest review is that they where a bit to honest with their opinions. We won't be back and will be looking for a jeweler that respects customers and doesn't judge based on looks. read more

I took a terrible fall, and with the doctor's visits wiping out my bank account I was forced to sell some items to feed my cats and myself. I went to ROG because I support local businesses and have been there before with no issue. I walk in and was immediately asked what happened to my foot. I told them I fell, Rick inquired further and wanted the story, I said it's really something he doesn't need to know and he insisted I tell him. I told him and he indignantly replied, "Oh Jesus Christ!", as in not believing my story. I brought in a unique woodwind instrument and he asked me what it was, I told him and he said, "Play it." "I cannot, my ribs are injury I can't even take a deep breath." He scoffed again and shook like head like "Of course you can't!" The younger gentleman took the time to look through my stuff and said that they hear a lot of weird stories, that's cool, I get it. But I expressed to him how upset I was (with tears in my eyes) with how I was treated by the owner. Cursed at with the Lord's name in disbelief, mocked and taken to a whole new low emotionally. Already down in the dumps I left crying and still can't let go of the way I was treated. Don't ask me what happened, don't tell me that you need to know and have the gall to blatantly not believe me. Never have felt this low about myself in a long time, if this is how he treats repeat customers, then I don't ever want to go back and that upsets me because I love my neighborhood and want to support my community without getting treated like a liar or criminal. read more
