I am a college student with a passion for dermatology and pursuing PA school. I left a voicemail for this place asking if I would be given the opportunity to shadow a professional.. received a text and a call back same day excited I reply and get on a call with Dr. Chiu he seemed open to my passion even giving me advice. I let him tell me about his experiences but it later just felt like I was interviewing him. He was telling me things I didn't even ask about like his rude customers to my surprise even using curse words to describe them and his schooling. i was still optimistic as he gave me a time to come into the office the next morning. I show up load A cart with a heavy box of charts he asked me to grab from his trunk and load in. I am wondering where are his staff there isn't even a front desk person..He scans my drivers license and application he asked me to fill out and grabs a composition book and places it on my side of the counter. As a shadow im thinking he Wanted me to use that book although I've prepared my own pocket book that I show him. He immediately gives me this evil glare telling me he never asked me to touch that book and is holding a post it pad saying he had it just in case I "screwed up". How unprofessional to assume. He then glares at the book then at me again at the book and stares into my soul for a quiet 5 seconds at this point i am super uncomfortable and it's also just the two of us, he then tells me he built this ground for 20 years (no idea what that has to do with the book) and tells me he did not tell me to grab the book. I'm already nervous as it is. He said he did not want his time wasted and I immediately apologize explaining this is my first time shadowing. He tells me to get out. Get out.i ask him if he's serious and he says yes And leads me out. I am shocked and confused. He called me twice, FaceTime emailed me, texted me just to kick me out within the first 10 minutes of us meeting in person. Because of a book I was not supposed to touch. Wasted my time. awful first experience. do not come here. there are better dermatologists with welcoming attitudes elsewhere. 000000 stars if I could. disappointed. read more

I am beyond grateful for Dr Chui! I started breaking out with hives all over my body and tried to see my allergist. The first appointment she had was in the middle of May! I called Diablo Dermatology and Dr Chui squeezed me in for a same day appointment! Stay away from Dr. Chiu at Diablo Dermatology. The pandemic has driven the man insane. I have been going to him for 20 years without a problem but the last few times have been surreal. He has a new person he is training every time I see him now, sometimes he is working by himself. Answering phones, billing, plus patients. My last appointment was the last straw. He was rude, obnoxious, kept talking over me, rushed me through the appointment. He spent more time billing me than treating me. Charged me 300.00 which I paid in full, billed my insurance as well and received 180.00 from them. He called me the night before my appointment because he didn't like my last review, when I asked why he was collecting from both me and my insurance he told be to ask his billing department and to not come in the next day if I was going to question him. The only reason I was going in was to try and recoup some of the money he took from me. read more

I was referred to Dr. Chiu by my primary doctor & had my appointment earlier today. Dr. Chiu was not only professional & thorough, he addressed my concerns with a nagging mole (on my neck) within my same appointment today! In my experience, he was very engaging & efficient. I admit, I was concerned reading all of the negative reviews prior to my appointment. But in the end, I had nothing to worry about! I will be back for any future dermatology needs. read more

Dr. Noel T. Chiu is the most unprofessional and disrespectful doctor I have ever met or worked with. He is extremely rude and condescending. I was selected to participate in a working interview by him so that I could get a feel of what the job would be like. Little did I know that would be one of the worst experiences I would ever have during an interview. I was only there for about an hour and a half before I walked out on the spot. Not only was he extremely condescending, be was very aggressive. He told me right off the bat that he wasn't going to explain or show me how to do things more than once because he didn't have time and that if I didn't get it the first time then that "was on me". When giving instructions he would get upset if I asked questions for clarification or made a mistake. If I made a mistake he would question or insult my intelligence by asking "Why can't you get it right?" or "What is wrong with you?" He would clap at me like a dog to move faster and would speak to me in a demanding tone. I had told him twice that I did not like the way he was speaking to me he would say, "ok" and continue to talk me the same way. My final straw was when he got upset because I wasn't moving at a pace that he wanted so he pushed my chair to the side and said, "Move, I'll do it myself since you can't get it right". At that point I had enough of him and his disrespect. I was no longer going to sit there and let him speak to me and treat me like an animal. When I told him that this was not going to work for me he immediately got upset and began questioning me. When telling him that I did not appreciate the he was treating me and speaking to me he got defensive and said that I was being difficult from the moment I came in. When I explained to him that I was in fact not being difficult and that I did everything he had asked of me with no problem. He began raising his voice and saying "What the hell?" and saying that I was unprofessional. I further explained to him that I was being very professional and that I was a human being and he would treat with the respect and dignity that I deserve. After retrieving my belongings he the demanded that I leave out the back door. I told him, "No, I'm going to leave out the way I came." When I made it to the door he started yelling and screaming that I was causing a "scene" and "disturbing his practice. I proceeded to tell him that I am not doing any of those things and that he needed to unlock the door so that I could leave. He said, "No, I hope you dont think I'm going to pay you for the 2 hours that you were here?". I told him that he didn't have to pay me bc I don't want his money and to please unlock the door because I just want to leave. He was again ignored my request and proceeded at ask me what was he going to do because he expected me to be there all day. I told him I don't care to just unlock the door. At that point I began to feel very unsafe because he now had me cornered and I had already asked him three times to unlock the door. In my final attempt to ask him to let me out I pulled out my pepper spray just in case (might I add it was only just the two of us in the building). After that he finally let me out. I was so shaken up by the incident that when I made to my car I just took a moment to myself before I started driving. While I was sitting in. my car he proceeded to walk out of the building to my car. I didn't want to continue on with this whole ordeal so I backed out of my parking spot and drove off. After driving off I called the non emergency police line to report the incident. When I spoke with the officer he had stated that this was his second time in the span of week dealing with Dr. Chiu for this same type of incident. Please do not apply for this job! This is not a safe or healthy environment to work in. Dr. Chiu is only focused on making money. He rushes through everything. He also doesn't understand that it takes time for people to learn how he manages his practice. He expects you to know how to do everything before you even get there. He is a horrible instructor and will try to make you feel less than and call you incompetent if you make a mistake or don't do something in the way that he likes. He is an arrogant egotistical maniac. He is also mean and inconsiderate towards his patients. Please avoid this place at all cost. read more

This staff has the Worst and most disgusting attitude you can even imagine I have no idea how this place is still in business after the way they treat their patients . To top it off they are racist. A family member of mine had been calling to schedule an appointment and they would refuse to make her an appointment because she did not speak fluent English she tried calling multiple times ( because thats where he Insurance referred her ) and would be hung up on because of lack of English. I called to Help schedule that appointment and when they picked up I explain to them that I was calling to make an appointment for a family member who did not speak fluent English they asked for the information once I gave the name of the patient they were very rude and stated this was the last chance for her to make an appointment because she did not speak proper english! I mean what kind of medical office does this? As myself working in a medical office i would never discriminate any patient for lack of english. This is just insane . Dr. Chiu is very condescending, lacks professionalism and his bed side manner needs improvement to say the least. He has no staff working for him. If I could put negative a million stars it still wouldn't be enough! Dr. Chiu is by far the worst doctor I have ever experienced. He text me and wanted to interview me so I called like he asked he then wanted me to come in and do a working interview well that lasted and hour and a half and I couldn't take anymore. He is so unbelievably rude his office is in shambles and all of his staff has walked out on him. I can now see why. He snaps his fingers at you he tells you pay attention follow directions when you are looking right at him and doing the task exactly as he asked. He has patients chart notes all over the place and in the wrong chart and then blamed me and said that I did it and I am Messing him up. I couldn't handle anymore and I had to walk out. I have worked with numerous types of doctors over the past 17 years in my career but NEVER someone like this. He seriously and I'm not joking must have ADD and Bipolar. It is really sad. Dr. Chiu saved my life 15 years ago. He saw a mole and immediately knew it was bad. Another doctor had seen it before and said it was fine. Dr. Chiu biopsied it. The results were a deadly cancer. Fortunately he caught it early. I might be dead if Dr. Chiu had not known it was bad. He is an excellent dermatologist and diagnostician, and has treated my other skin problems very well since then. Doctor Noel chiu has a short temper I worked for him as an intern so I was able to work alongside him unfortunately. He mentally abuses you without caring. He is very impatient and extremely difficult to work with. He treats his staff poorly and curses them out behind their back. He even told me that he lets his patients bring in weapons to the office. A few years ago we were referred to Dr. Chiu when one of my children that some minor dermatology issues. On the first visit, medication was prescribed and by the second visit the issue was resolved. I noticed during the first visit Dr. Chiu's demeanor was insolent. The second visit he was a slight bit friendlier, but he still had an overall arrogance that was difficult for me to accept. When my wife advised that she used some over the counter treatments, Dr. Chiu's demeanor changed for the worst. We decided not to return, and I was glad we were done. This medical issue has not reappeared. Last year we were again referred to Dr. Chiu for a different dermatology issue. The patient file was probably marked as his demeanor toward us hadn't changed (or based on other Yelp reviews, it's his standard demeanor). We got through the first visit, but the second and third we had to be subjected to a condescending lecture. On the third visit he verbally told us to increase use of a medication. I took notes. By the scheduled forth visit, my child didn't want to return. When we arrived for the forth visit, I was first told that we didn't owe co-pay as we overpaid on a previous visit. Not true, so I asked for a receipt so this error wouldn't resurface. We were then greeted by a CMA who asked about medication used and I told her of Dr. Chiu's latest instructions. She told me I was wrong about his directions, but rather than accepting that I misunderstood his directions, this CMA felt it was necessary to treat me like an idiot. Dr. Chiu entered the office, made demeaning statements to me and my child for not following his directions, and made no attempt at eye contact or mediation. Apparently it was my fault there was no improvement, and Dr. Chiu then told me to leave and not return. Thank-you! It took about ten more minutes to get a zero balance receipt from the receptionist. Gone at last! We got another dermatology referral and in one visit we learned that Dr. Chiu's diagnosis was wrong, and once different medication was prescribed the issue quickly improved. I would like to thank Dr. Chiu for allowing us to get another referral that solved the problem. I wasn't going to submit a Yelp review regarding Dr. Chiu, but our new dermatologist and my child's quick improvement has inspired me. In my short 56 years of life I've never dealt with such a doctor that defines rudeness and has a total lack of interpersonal skills. No real stars, five quacks. read more

I called to reschedule an appointment because I have lupus and was not feeling well the day prior to the appointment . Thinking I was doing the right thing instead of just not showing up I decided to try and reschedule and was told I can't reschedule because I've had 1 no show (which I don't recall) and 1 reschedule in the past. So now they just won't see me anymore! Lupus is no joke and for a physician to hold that against a patient is disgusting! I work in healthcare and 1 no show and 1 reschedule is not a reason to dismiss a patient from a practice. Anything good I've gotten out of past appointments with him is out of the window. Done with this place. The doctor is okay, but the wait is always at least an hour. I was going to cancel appointment yesterday for an appointment today, but since I missed the 24 hour window, they were going to charge me $25. I asked if they could tell me if I would be seen in a timely manner and they said no. The girl spoke to the office manager and said they would need to speak to the doctor and call me back in order the waive the fee. I guess he said no because after we were sitting in the waiting room I got the message that we had to pay the fee if we didn't come. I have paid every bill and have been on time to each appointment. Here I sit with my son 55 minutes after our appointment time. Not coming back. I have shown grace to them, and they cannot do the same for a good patient. PS - He came in for a total of three minutes and was out of there. Well, now so are we. read more

Six months has passed and there's still this little bump on my left forearm. My husband who is also a Physician Assistant recommended that we go see a James Jewell, PA-C at Diablo Dermatology. James came highly recommended from my husband based on his previous visit and his thought was "...well we can take our chance with someone nearby or go to James Jewell who is a sure thing". And boy was he absolutely right. It was definitely worth a 1 1/2 hour drive from Belmont to Antioch. By no means am I bias because my husband is a PA but my experience in a doctor's office has always been...we wait in the waiting room for 30 to 45 minutes, then the medical assistant calls you in tricks you into thinking "great! it's my turn to be seen" so they get you in the door, get you on the scale, measure your temperature/blood pressure and so forth only to tell you that the doc will be in "just a few minutes". Is it really "just a few minutes"??? I can remember the times when I feel asleep on the examination table. And when the doc comes in he gets right down to business. He doesn't want to hear ramblings so best better get to your point in few minutes so he can move on with the next patient. So you wait an hour for a 10 minute consultation with a doc. So to get back to my review on Mr. Jim Jewell...the medical assistant took us in followed by Jim few minutes later. He patiently and attentively listened to my complaints, educated me on the anatomy and the physiology of the skin, asked my husband for his thought on the diagnosis, informed me of my treatment options and lastly, included me in the decision making process. Not only did he care for my bump but also took the time to address additional complaints relating to my skin (i.e. KP, the one little white spot on my left leg that didn't get tanned, etc.). So after a 30 minute consultation, Jim recommended few skin creams and assured me that my little bump was nothing to worry about. Jim Jewell, PA-C has over 25 years of experience as a Physician Assistant. Many of you may have strong preference over a doctor versus a PA and I can understand why. My visit with Jim has concluded me to believe that it doesn't matter if a clinician is a MD. Jim is a perfect example of what a medical physician should be. So for those that live in Antioch, Diablo Dermatology is a perfect place to go for dermatology issues. Specifically ask for Jim Jewell. And for those that are in the peninsula, if you don't mind the long drive but want to save time and get it right the first time Jim Jewell is the perfect clinician to see. I was referee here by my sons pediatrician because he has eczema. The female dr was completely rude. I had lost my voice and it kept going in and out so while I was tying to talk to her, I would get louder when I noticed my voice was about to go out. Mind you, I explained to her that I had lost my voice before we even started discussing my sons care. She then told me to stop yelling, I was not yelling at all and she shoved the prescription in my hand and left with an attitude. The male dr I absolutely love. Very understanding and friendly. The front staff. Idk about. I have a 9:30 appt and no one is at the desk. So I called from the front office thinking the would answer the phone and they send me to voicemail twice claiming they were on the phone with another patient and they are not. This review is based on the initial phone call, as I never actually made an appointment. The person who answered the phone did so as if she was bored/irritated for having to answer. Was completely unhelpful in finding out what the the charge might be/insurance questions and when I said I wouldn't be scheduling she was quick to get off the phone. Dr. Chiu Is a very unfriendly person with no tact or personality. He is argumentative, opinionated, and confrontational. He displays no good bedside manner, and is a bully at best. I would not recommend him to anyone. He may be good at what he does, but his dealing with his patients is non-existent. He offers no good follow up answers, wants to get rid of you as fast as he can, and provides no reasonable explanation to questions. Ok, so I haven't visited the office yet, but medical office reviews definitely begin w/the initial phone call. IMO, the staff -- and doctors -- forget that we're often nervous, scared or anxious. Esp when our initial call to the office is because of a problem we're experiencing. I decided to call here based on the one Yelp review. From my experience, Yelpers don't give out 5 stars to the medical offices for the heck of it. The initial phone call was very easy. The receptionist was kind and didn't once sound frustrated or irritated, even when I had to repeat information a number of times (dang headsets!). I am looking forward to meeting Dr. Chiu. They're starting off as a 5-star-er with me. read more

I have been seeing Dr Chiu for several years, the care provided is always professional and first class. I do not understand the poor ratings I see here on YELP. It is very easy for people to complain when they are doing an on-line anonymous review with no personal implications. Dr Chiu is a highly qualified and highly skilled Dermatologist who cares about his patients and the quality of medical care that he and his staff provide. I have never had anything but a 5 Star interaction and I trust him with medical skin care and I have had regular skin cancer issues. Excellent Doctor! read more

I think Dr. Chiu saved my life. He is an excellent diagnostician. In 2007 during a routine exam, he spotted a small, innocent looking mole on my arm, that he immediately knew was a problem. He sent it to UCSF for biospy. It came back as early stage malignant melanoma. Dr. Chiu removed it all with a safe margin. Thank God and Dr. Chiu! Melanoma can be deadly if not caught early. He did save my life. He is professional, highly intelligent, and friendly. I come back often for rechecks, and feel very confident to be in his care. read more

My daughter is special needs, got referred to him for daughters severe eczema. First appointment, he gave her shampoo, took forever to get it approved. . I kept calling for 2 months left dozen messages. No responses. As he told me he had 3 different plans he could do for her problems. At first, I thought, awesome. No, no, no.. ...... I had to drive there numerous times, no sign on door, closed. 6 times I went in person, due to no call back.since no return calls for more than 3 months months. When I came in, to say need refill, and said no one answered, or return my calls, he said we were closed . I asked why no one answers, or returned my messages, for 2 months, you should have had out going message saying your closed or at very least sign on door. His response, was only we were closed, didn't apologize, nothing, so I asked for refill. He would not refill shampoo, even though my daughters hair falling out. Made me make new appointment. Went to appointment, and again, couldn't get new and existing prescription filled. Went back again in person, as again, no one answers phone, oh yes, voice mail full, cant leave message. Went there in person again., again 4 times, in person, closed., went again talked to dental receptionist , as no receptionist for Dr. CHIU. She told me he has no one, , no assistant, no receptionist., hes working alone. I asked to leave a note. She suggested I wait, as he wouldn't do anything. I waited, and his response, "I KNOW WHAT IM DOING, ". I told him in person, insurance requires TAR, as pharmacy and insurance said not forularlary. I told him , I have contacted pharmacy, insurance, and he needs to submit TAR. He refused, said its formulary, and i should go elsewhere. I told him again, my daughter losing her hair, daily, major. and it hurts her. he didnt care at all. Please, stay away from Dr. CHIU. He is incompetent. Doesn't care at all about his patients and obviously not about his practice. If I could, i would leave minus 5 stars. I will be contacting medical board. read more
