Even the name Scotia Curry is a bit of an oxymoron, our region being known for seafood and donairs more than curry and butter chicken. But what a great addition to our local cuisine. It was pricey as compared to other options but it I took some home and it made a great lunch the next day. Generally the venue is mostly decorated, doesn't really add or detract from the food experience. They offer a reasonable drink menu and a wide selection of gluten and dairy free dishes.

There was great excitement amongst the OCC members, as we entered the FAMOUS Curry Garden on Friday March 11th for a review of their establishment. According to their Facebook page we were in for "tongue-shivering flavours" - a statement they delivered on! After some slight confusion from the waiter on what the OCC stands for and what our objectives were for dining at the establishment, we were seated and to our big surprise, informed that the FAMOUS Curry Garden does not serve either Papadums nor Kingfisher beers - off to a good start. Having received the all clear to visit the liquor store around the corner and bring a round of BYOB, we jumped into the menu. After the initial surprise of not being able to order papadums, we were served a delicious alternative in a variety of tasty appetisers. Soon after the mains started arriving and we were particularly impressed with the Goan King Prawn Curry and the Butter Chicken, both delivering a "tongue-shivering" experience. The home-made Naan Bread was also noteworthy. Waitstaff required a bit of prompting/nudging at times but overall was friendly, with good recommendations, albeit there was a bit of a language barrier and minor confusion at times. The atmosphere was very authentic with several Indian landmarks represented. We will definitely be back for when patio-season starts, to experience the patio atmosphere. The place was very busy around 8PM, but we got a table right away. The first thing that gave us a great feel was the fact that we were two of the only four white patrons in the entire dining room. I knew we were in for a treat. The staff was fantastic, quickly bringing water to our table and checking to see if we were ready to order. We eat a lot of Indian food, and I've got a lot of Indian friends from many years working in software roles. So, we do tend to be a little jaded on the quality of Indian restaurants. I did see a few dishes and breads we don't typically see at home in our favorite Indian places. My wife has a tendency to order the same dish when we go out for Indian every time, and I have a tendency to want to try different things. I was able to convince her to try the Murg Lawabdar (chicken) entree. I have to say, that may really be the best single Indian dish I've ever had. It was probably smart for us to tell our waitress "medium" when she asked what spice level we wanted. Medium at Mirchi is pretty darn hot and spicy, but by no means unbearable like a Vindaloo can get to. Murg Lawabdar was like a thick curry gravy, with tons of spices and a good heat level. I think using chicken thigh brings even more flavor to the dish, which also includes green pepper, chilis, and a good bit of onion. We split one order of this, and we couldn't even finish the whole thing. Trust me, we tried. I couldn't stop eating, it was so good. We also got the spicy chili garlic roti bread. Oddly enough, not many of our Indian restaurants around home offer roti. Almost all of them offer naan, though. The funny thing about this roti was that it was also spicy, sprinkled with red chili pepper flakes. So, when you tried to cool the fire from the Murg Lawabdar with the bread, it just got hotter! So, make sure you order some raita to go along with your meal. That goes a long way toward cooling you off if you reach the five-alarm fire level with a spicy dish. This place has very low-key cool vibe in a relatively small dining room. The atmosphere is so good, I highly recommend eating in the dining room instead of getting it to-go. This is as authentic as it gets, and I can't stress enough that this was one of the very best Indian meals I've ever had.

It came with what I think is a coconut chutney and I think daal. The chicken curry was AMAZING. It was just insanely flavorful and heavily seasoned but not spicy If that makes sense. I've had takeout two or three times and found the food to be first rate, but recently I dined in for the first time with the wife and a friend from UK. It's a small space, fairly plain, but comfortable enough. The food is mainly prepared at the main restaurant as I understand, with finishing touches applied here. The menu isn't as extensive, but any curry fan will find all they need and there are even some surprises, particularly in the breads. It was Saturday evening and two of the other tables were occupied, and I've noticed before that a lot of their customers are of Indian/Pakistani heritage, which is always encouraging. I went for the beef vindaloo, which was well spiced and nicely bitter. The others tried the chicken tikka masala and reported full satisfaction. We also had the aloo ghobi, dall, rice and a quite superb, huge naan. The poppadom to start were also excellent. Crispy, warm and tasty. All in all, exactly what we needed and there was enough left over to feed the two of us the following night! Price was just fine, especially given how much food you get. Will definitely be back.

The Long Version: My husband and I had dinner at The Wooden Monkey and we enjoyed it. I always prefer organic and locally sourced ingredients as they are fresher and as a result usually taste better, so that's one of the reasons it was on our list of places to try. I initially wanted the haddock burger and was thrilled to hear that their bun (which they bake in-house) was a plain bun without sesame seeds or poppy seeds. However, our helpful server, Angie, informed me that the breading for the haddock contained sesame seeds, so I had to order something else :( My backup plan was the Fish Cakes ($17.50). The default side is "roasties" which is their famous roasted potatoes, but Angie recommended a side salad instead since the fish cakes contained potatoes and it would be a lot of starches without vegetables. This was a great suggestion. I did want to try their roasties so I got the half salad half roasties upgrade (an additional $5) and chose the Sweet Apple salad. My husband got the salmon ($29.25). He chose roasties as his side, but his salmon automatically came with some roasted vegetables too. My fish cakes were good, but I felt there could have been a bit more fish. The potato to fish ratio was high. They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I liked the homemade tartar sauce. The roasties were seasoned potato wedges. I liked the thin and crispy ones. The thicker and softer ones, not so much. However, my husband gladly ate them, lol. The Sweet Apple salad was delicious (Angie said it was her favourite when I was deciding on that one or the Beet salad). It had mixed greens, apples, carrots, daikon, goat cheese, walnuts and green onions. The dressing was a maple mustard dressing, which I requested on the side and it arrived as requested. The ingredients were fresh and I really liked the flavours of the salad. There was a tiny bit of coleslaw on my plate too. It was good (vinegar instead of mayo based) but was only a tiny mouthful. My husband enjoyed his salmon. I had a taste and agreed that it was great. My husband also got a beer (Propeller pilsner $9). The restaurant has a monkey motif so the decor is full of monkey stuff. That had been waiting a long time for a table and two waitresses working in a gentleman. Unfortunately, we waited 15 minutes to even get acknowledged about getting seated at that point we decided to leave unfortunately we won't be back and now we understand why there's a four star rating.
