The easiest way to get me into an Indian restaurant I've been meaning to visit: tell me they serve dosa and I'll be there within 24 hours. And that, my friends, is the story of how I finally made it to Dhaba Express for the first time. I made a specific trip for lunch on Sunday given that it's the only day of the week that they serve these South Indian crepes stuffed with Masala goodness. I've fallen in love with dosa on the west coast and Dhaba's definitely held up to my past experiences. I actually found the crepe portion even tastier than the ones I've had before! At $6.50 a pop with two dips included (spicy stewed veggies and a coconutty blend), it's a bargain but notably smaller than most other dosas I've had elsewhere. But that's okay- all the more reason to order something else to go along with it, right? So that's what we did. I strong-armed Shannon K into ordering a South Indian combination plate off their brunch menu to share post-dosa. Not that it took a whole lot of convincing. Our tray came out with cute sections keeping all the goodness separated for your own mixing pleasure. For about $11, we got a shareable serving of tomato-infused daal, Eggplant curry (I think), paneer korma, chickpea salad, basmati rice, and naan - so basically anything you'd ever want. We each got nice servings out of it and there's still some to spare in the fridge. The only thing is it doesn't come with a whole lot of naan so you might want to order more. I'm looking forward to getting back in for a go at their dinner menu especially after chatting with the server a bit. She mentioned that they try to make it easy for folks to try all sorts of different dishes without having to order full servings of each. Instead of ordering full $12 for each item, you can add on side-servings for something like $3/each. Goodbye hefty bills and awkward negotiations with your dining companions! After all was said and done, we split the bill and paid a lovely $13.80 (plus tip) each. Service was perfectly pleasant and the space itself is way nicer than you'd expect of any spot with 'Express' in the title. I was expecting at takeout joint and was very happy with the bistro feel for dining-in. I'll be back!

Buffet. Excuse the messyness.... it was yummy.

Came here for the buffet. I've only had indian food like 3 times. Plenty of flavor, food tastes great. Spicy depending on what you get but that's expected from an indian restaurant. It was a bit pricey though but probably worth it all things considered. The bread is realllllllllllly good. Like it's the best part. Service was a little lacking, there was one waitress who was also working the front cash and dealing with the phone/takeouts, but at least she was friendly. -1 service

A very tasty meal that was large enough for us to share. Forgot to take a photo until half done but would definitely return.

Service was BUSY... there was 2 servers for the whole place on a busy tuesdsy night. Took about an hour for mains which was ok because we had starters. Papadams and the chickpea fritters which were the pakoras... Then the main was 2 vindaloos, 2 saffron infused rice and 2 naan. All delicious, hot, spicy and filling. The gals did a great job with what they had to work with. . Which was one another with a full dining room. Well done gals!!!

My husband and I shared the buffalo wings and I got the chicken Caesar wrap, both very flavorful and filling. We had been traveling all day so we needed a hearty meal. Their menu is fun and approachable, with the same sort of things that you'd see on many casual restaurant menus - burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, bowls and poutines - but done with their in-house vegan products. I'm not sure if their breakfast sandwich is just a weekend thing (it's not on the menu on their website), but I was keen to see what that was like. We posted up at a counter along the street-side windows to people watch, although there is a bit more seating further inside (you don't seem to see pics of it here or on Google, but there is more seating than for just four people!). My niece and nephew both got the donair. It was actually their first one ever, real meat or Real Fake, and they seemed quite happy! I appreciated the flavour profile and the crisp edges of RFM's facsimile of Nova Scotia's famous mystery meat. My wife went for the Curly Fries Supreme, which utilizes classic McCain curly fries. Getting the deep fryer treatment, they're *much* better than being done in an oven at home. All the more so when so generously topped with cheeze sauce, "sour cream", tomatoes, green onion and seitan "bacon". Banana peppers made an added appearance for a nice little punch. I very quite pleased with my breakfast sandwich (and side of au naturel curly fries). The vegan sausage patty had an herby hit to it, and the cheeze slice was ooey gooey and pleasantly salty. I'm not sure what the "egg" was, but it was a little on the soft side, with the white falling apart; I'm not sure if that's to do with its inherent structure or its cooking. A small quibble on a great sandwich though! I love what RFM is doing and they're doing a helluva job at it!

I was visiting Halifax recently, and it was such a pleasant surprise to fine this cozy Ethiopian restaurant! I grew up eating at Ethiopian restaurants in California and came in with high expectations. Aster Cafe did not disappoint. I got the veggie plate, which had a delicious mix of lentils, potatoes, chickpeas, and greens on top of soft, tangy injera. Super flavorful and very satisfying, especially for a vegetarian like me. Others at my table had the beef tibs and loved them too. We all got the mango limeade--highly recommend! The service was warm and attentive, and the server helped us figure out the best way to share both veg and meat options. The chef came out after the meal to check in, which made the experience even more special. Great food, great people, great atmosphere. Definitely one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Don't miss this place if you're in Halifax!

I first popped in on my way home from work, just happening to walk by on my way up Salter. Even my admittedly mild to barely-there hunger was enough to pique my curiosity enough to pull the trigger. And hey, waiting for Halifax Transit is a risky business and I don't want to starve! The warmer still had a few options in it (with further pre-made options in the display cooler) - beef, pork and veggie. I probably should have went for the beef to help restock my red blood cells after a recent blood donation, but pork always seems to call to me. Empanadas also come with a sauce , and I went for the spicy chimichurri. Like many savoury pastries, empanadas are made for being an on-the-go meal, and I'm sure other commuters at my bus stop were jealous! The pastry itself was lightly crispy, but it wasn't dried out from being in the warmer for too long. As for the filling, the mix of shredded pork, corn, onions and other veg made for a solid mini-meal. The empanada wasn't heavily seasoned, but the chimichurri made up for that. Nearly stealing the show completely, the deeply vegetal sauce had hints of spice and further richness from olive oil that I was absolutely loving! No joke, Empanada Shop should be selling this by the jar! A return visit, also post-work, saw me go for the beef empanada. Once again, the pastry was well-executed, with a supple flakiness that held up to its delicious contents without being tough or too thick and bready. The ground beef filling was rich and hearty, with additional traditional fillings of black olives, corn and hard-boiled egg. Once again the empanada was a vehicle for the fantastic chimichurri. When a mom and pop place like The Empanada Shop is making niche food as good as they are, you can only hope that they keep making a go of it, enriching the city (and my diet) with their wonderful wares.

Greek Taverna. ela! has a nice authentic Greek ambiance and the servers were pleasant and just attentive enough. But the food let us down for quantity and price. The three of us always like a variety so often order Appetizer platters when they are offered. The ela! website shows the Menu and the appy platter is listed as $60. The platter we received was priced at $75 and while it says is feeds 4 there were only two of each item so someone went without or two people had to share. For $75.......come on. A tad over priced. The appy platter also was filled in the middle with french fries, not Roasted Greek Potatoes like I would expect in a Greek Restaurant. Nary a single Roasted Greek Potato to be seen. A side of Saganaki is always required but a smallish piece of melty cheese for $20!!! Way over the top price for what you get. I realize food prices went up during covid but instead of bring them back down where they should be, all restaurants are holding the high prices. ela! has decent food but they are way over priced for amount you actually get. Greek food is very easy to cook at home so we will not be back.
