The easiest way to get me into an Indian restaurant I've been meaning to visit: tell me they serve dosa and I'll be there within 24 hours. And that, my friends, is the story of how I finally made it to Dhaba Express for the first time. I made a specific trip for lunch on Sunday given that it's the only day of the week that they serve these South Indian crepes stuffed with Masala goodness. I've fallen in love with dosa on the west coast and Dhaba's definitely held up to my past experiences. I actually found the crepe portion even tastier than the ones I've had before! At $6.50 a pop with two dips included (spicy stewed veggies and a coconutty blend), it's a bargain but notably smaller than most other dosas I've had elsewhere. But that's okay- all the more reason to order something else to go along with it, right? So that's what we did. I strong-armed Shannon K into ordering a South Indian combination plate off their brunch menu to share post-dosa. Not that it took a whole lot of convincing. Our tray came out with cute sections keeping all the goodness separated for your own mixing pleasure. For about $11, we got a shareable serving of tomato-infused daal, Eggplant curry (I think), paneer korma, chickpea salad, basmati rice, and naan - so basically anything you'd ever want. We each got nice servings out of it and there's still some to spare in the fridge. The only thing is it doesn't come with a whole lot of naan so you might want to order more. I'm looking forward to getting back in for a go at their dinner menu especially after chatting with the server a bit. She mentioned that they try to make it easy for folks to try all sorts of different dishes without having to order full servings of each. Instead of ordering full $12 for each item, you can add on side-servings for something like $3/each. Goodbye hefty bills and awkward negotiations with your dining companions! After all was said and done, we split the bill and paid a lovely $13.80 (plus tip) each. Service was perfectly pleasant and the space itself is way nicer than you'd expect of any spot with 'Express' in the title. I was expecting at takeout joint and was very happy with the bistro feel for dining-in. I'll be back!

Buffet. Excuse the messyness.... it was yummy.

Came here for the buffet. I've only had indian food like 3 times. Plenty of flavor, food tastes great. Spicy depending on what you get but that's expected from an indian restaurant. It was a bit pricey though but probably worth it all things considered. The bread is realllllllllllly good. Like it's the best part. Service was a little lacking, there was one waitress who was also working the front cash and dealing with the phone/takeouts, but at least she was friendly. -1 service

A very tasty meal that was large enough for us to share. Forgot to take a photo until half done but would definitely return.

Service was BUSY... there was 2 servers for the whole place on a busy tuesdsy night. Took about an hour for mains which was ok because we had starters. Papadams and the chickpea fritters which were the pakoras... Then the main was 2 vindaloos, 2 saffron infused rice and 2 naan. All delicious, hot, spicy and filling. The gals did a great job with what they had to work with. . Which was one another with a full dining room. Well done gals!!!

Disappointed they don't offer delivery. I ended up going else where this time. I have enjoyed their food on many sit down occasions.

I got buffet takeout. Good food but you lose out on the all you can eat quantity because you have to stuff everything in a container.

I'd only started eating Indian food last Summer and Famous Curry Garden is without a doubt. the best I have ever had. Every bite was full of flavour. I can't wait to order again. Don't miss out, if you love food full of heat and flavour, Famous Curry Garden is the place to be!

With…read moremultiple international franchises, we relentlessly scour the globe in pursuit of the crispiest papadums, the tastiest sauces and spiciest curries. On March 11th, 2022 the OCC Nova Scotia reviewed FAMOUS Curry Garden as part of our hunt for the CHOTY (Curry House Of The Year) and in search of the second OCC approved curry house in Canada. Members vote anonymously on 5 categories - and an average score is given to each restaurant we review. There was great excitement amongst the OCC members, as we entered the FAMOUS Curry Garden on Friday March 11th for a review of their establishment. According to their Facebook page we were in for "tongue-shivering flavours" - a statement they delivered on! After some slight confusion from the waiter on what the OCC stands for and what our objectives were for dining at the establishment, we were seated and to our big surprise, informed that the FAMOUS Curry Garden does not serve either Papadums nor Kingfisher beers - off to a good start. Having received the all clear to visit the liquor store around the corner and bring a round of BYOB, we jumped into the menu. After the initial surprise of not being able to order papadums, we were served a delicious alternative in a variety of tasty appetisers. Soon after the mains started arriving and we were particularly impressed with the Goan King Prawn Curry and the Butter Chicken, both delivering a "tongue-shivering" experience. The home-made Naan Bread was also noteworthy. Waitstaff required a bit of prompting/nudging at times but overall was friendly, with good recommendations, albeit there was a bit of a language barrier and minor confusion at times. The atmosphere was very authentic with several Indian landmarks represented. We will definitely be back for when patio-season starts, to experience the patio atmosphere. In summary, we are delighted to make the FAMOUS Curry Garden the second OCC approved curry house in Nova Scotia and in Canada. We had a very pleasurable dining experience and would certainly recommend The Famous Curry Garden to anyone in the mood for a curry in Halifax's North End. - OCC

Mirchi Tandoor - Lamb Biryani with chili garlic Naan

Downtown Halifax

We went to Mirchi Tandoor on a busy Saturday night, following a tip from a bartender at one of the…read morelocal breweries. That tip turned out to be pure gold! The place was very busy around 8PM, but we got a table right away. The first thing that gave us a great feel was the fact that we were two of the only four white patrons in the entire dining room. I knew we were in for a treat. The staff was fantastic, quickly bringing water to our table and checking to see if we were ready to order. We eat a lot of Indian food, and I've got a lot of Indian friends from many years working in software roles. So, we do tend to be a little jaded on the quality of Indian restaurants. I did see a few dishes and breads we don't typically see at home in our favorite Indian places. My wife has a tendency to order the same dish when we go out for Indian every time, and I have a tendency to want to try different things. I was able to convince her to try the Murg Lawabdar (chicken) entree. I have to say, that may really be the best single Indian dish I've ever had. It was probably smart for us to tell our waitress "medium" when she asked what spice level we wanted. Medium at Mirchi is pretty darn hot and spicy, but by no means unbearable like a Vindaloo can get to. Murg Lawabdar was like a thick curry gravy, with tons of spices and a good heat level. I think using chicken thigh brings even more flavor to the dish, which also includes green pepper, chilis, and a good bit of onion. We split one order of this, and we couldn't even finish the whole thing. Trust me, we tried. I couldn't stop eating, it was so good. We also got the spicy chili garlic roti bread. Oddly enough, not many of our Indian restaurants around home offer roti. Almost all of them offer naan, though. The funny thing about this roti was that it was also spicy, sprinkled with red chili pepper flakes. So, when you tried to cool the fire from the Murg Lawabdar with the bread, it just got hotter! So, make sure you order some raita to go along with your meal. That goes a long way toward cooling you off if you reach the five-alarm fire level with a spicy dish. This place has very low-key cool vibe in a relatively small dining room. The atmosphere is so good, I highly recommend eating in the dining room instead of getting it to-go. This is as authentic as it gets, and I can't stress enough that this was one of the very best Indian meals I've ever had.
