Mirchi Tandoor - Lamb Biryani with chili garlic Naan

We went to Mirchi Tandoor on a busy Saturday night, following a tip from a bartender at one of the…read morelocal breweries. That tip turned out to be pure gold! The place was very busy around 8PM, but we got a table right away. The first thing that gave us a great feel was the fact that we were two of the only four white patrons in the entire dining room. I knew we were in for a treat. The staff was fantastic, quickly bringing water to our table and checking to see if we were ready to order. We eat a lot of Indian food, and I've got a lot of Indian friends from many years working in software roles. So, we do tend to be a little jaded on the quality of Indian restaurants. I did see a few dishes and breads we don't typically see at home in our favorite Indian places. My wife has a tendency to order the same dish when we go out for Indian every time, and I have a tendency to want to try different things. I was able to convince her to try the Murg Lawabdar (chicken) entree. I have to say, that may really be the best single Indian dish I've ever had. It was probably smart for us to tell our waitress "medium" when she asked what spice level we wanted. Medium at Mirchi is pretty darn hot and spicy, but by no means unbearable like a Vindaloo can get to. Murg Lawabdar was like a thick curry gravy, with tons of spices and a good heat level. I think using chicken thigh brings even more flavor to the dish, which also includes green pepper, chilis, and a good bit of onion. We split one order of this, and we couldn't even finish the whole thing. Trust me, we tried. I couldn't stop eating, it was so good. We also got the spicy chili garlic roti bread. Oddly enough, not many of our Indian restaurants around home offer roti. Almost all of them offer naan, though. The funny thing about this roti was that it was also spicy, sprinkled with red chili pepper flakes. So, when you tried to cool the fire from the Murg Lawabdar with the bread, it just got hotter! So, make sure you order some raita to go along with your meal. That goes a long way toward cooling you off if you reach the five-alarm fire level with a spicy dish. This place has very low-key cool vibe in a relatively small dining room. The atmosphere is so good, I highly recommend eating in the dining room instead of getting it to-go. This is as authentic as it gets, and I can't stress enough that this was one of the very best Indian meals I've ever had.

It's larger than it was first time I visited, but still in the little strip mall off Chain Lake Drive. There are two rooms either side of the entrance, both cool, subtly lit and cozy. It was just after they opened on a summer's Thursday morning, so I was the first customer and quickly ordered the meat thali. This comes in six segments. Two meat curries which change from time to time (today it was beef and chicken). A very nice dahl, a good portion of rice, chickpea salad and a quartered plain naan. All very tasty and overall quite a sizeable portion. I was on the ravenous side of peckish when I arrived and left thoroughly stuffed, so you definitely get your value for the $23 with tip. It's not licensed, but has a nice line in cold drinks should you so desire. It's no surprise this place is consistently voted No.1 curry house in Halifax, though it has a lot more competition than it did when it first opened. Thoroughly recommended.

Anyway, the pakoras were ok. Butter chicken was very oily. Yes, oily, not butter oil, just oily. (Look at the picture). The best part of the meal is the rice. But even that's not good. It has a nice color to it though. Food is pretty mediocre. I'd come back for a quick takeout but i'd go to other places if I actually want a real, good indian food.

Rasa means essence or taste in Hindi - something which the OCC was fully exposed to during our meet. Greeted by the Manager upon arrival, we were swiftly shown to our table and a cold round of Kingfishers arrived promptly hereafter. Taking advise from the waiter on menu recommendations, we had a wide variety of dished, breads and sides - all elevating the overall dining experience. Rasa; Flavours Of India states on their website that they have "an obsession with perfecting the details. From the number of ice cubes in your drink to the spiciness of each dish, your complete satisfaction is our top priority." A statement we can confirm to be bang on point. The dining experience was elevated and highlighted by the attention to detail, whether being the authentic decor, the well trained and top professional staff or the bowls in which the dishes where served - Top Mark! The cuisine did not disappoint either - everything from the creamy and perfectly spiced Butter Chicken, the homemade Naan Bread to the crispy poppadum's had fully seen the Chefs obsession with perfection and attention to detail. The dining was capped off with a traditional Masala Chai Tea - another great recommendation from the waitstaff. Waitstaff was eager, enthusiastic, very friendly, made great recommendations, and ensured the cold Kingfisher kept flowing with plenty. In summary, we are pleased to officially OCC approve Rase: Flavours Of India. We had a most delightful dining experience and would certainly recommend Rasa to anyone in the mood for exceptional customer service and an authentic Indian curry. - OCC Date of visit: September 2022

Food was delivered by Door Dash so take the delivery with a grain of salt. The food arrived and was a good portion for the two of us to eat. Chicken korma had a really nice flavour. Sauce was nice and thick, chicken pieces were very large. Butter chicken was good, not great. Didn't find it had as much flavour as others we've tried, but for some it may be perfectly fine. Our mistake was not realizing that these two dishes didn't have anything other than the chicken in them - so make sure you read the descriptions if you want to ensure that you get veggies. Last thing, which is more probably an issue with Door Dash, is that we didn't get any utensils with the food - but we made do in the hotel. Overall will try again another time we are in town and choose some of their other many options.

The paneer tikka taste wise was good, however the food color in paneer could have been avoided, there were five chunks of paneer, good size but no capsicum or onion just one of each for five pieces of paneer. No green chutney just a small tiny yogurt dip, again the taste was good but the experience could be improved by adding few more onions and capsicum on the skewer and chutney. Matar paneer was good too, amritsari kulcha was huge bigger than the plate itself, was tasty too. We had it at room temperature after an hour when it was packed so May be that's why it turned a bit chewy but otherwise taste was nice

Flakey tender pieces of cod were tossed in a sauce that had just enough heat to salivate the tongue without scorching. Arriving piping hot, the fragrant ginger, garlic, green onions, bell pepper, and chilis combine into a wonderful sauce covering the still crispy fish. You'll need an order of plain basmati rice ($5) to balance off the dish's saltiness. For diners who love saucy dishes, the creamy tomato-based curry in the kaida chicken ($16.50) is lovely for slathering on rice or dipping naan into. Of all the dishes, it held the least heat but still incorporated enough spices for flavour. There were generous chunks of chicken steeped in the gravy, but I would have liked dark meat better as the chicken breast was a little tough. Tawa's shrimp biryani ($17.99) was huge and while the shrimp were overcooked the rice was moist and flavourful. I couldn't get enough of the dish and had bowl after bowl despite being stuffed. You will not leave hungry. Even their naan ($3; two orders in picture) was sizeable and seemed like it was coming from a never-ending basket. Do yourself a favour and start with one then add on as needed.

The place is small and is located inside of a mall so it was a bit annoying to find. I had never had Indian food before and I always wanted to try it. We got to the place and he helped me order since I didn't really know what things were. I went with a butter chicken poutine and he ordered some garlic naan as well. I don't do well with spicy food and they said they could only do medium cause it was already marinated in the sauce so I decided to try it. The spice was actually not horrible and I could handle it. The naan helped a lot. I would much rather something less spicy but medium was the lowest they had for all the food. That's why I took off one star. The flavor was very different but not bad. I don't think I would ever order it again tho. I might go back if I'm ever there again to try something else but who knows. It was good so I give it 4 stars.
