    Having lived in Trinidad in my 20s, I consider myself a bit of a snob about West Indian food. This place is head and shoulders above anything I've had in North America. Started with the fried plantains, which were sweet and tender. The goat roti was nothing short of spectacular. The roti skin was flavorful and had the exact consistency of my roti youth in Port of Spain. The goat curry was rich and delicious. The jerk chicken was out of this world. Just spicy enough and so delicious. We also enjoyed a mango juice cocktail. Cannot recommend enough. Absolute gourmet dinner!

    Ackee Meal WOW!!! Soooo good!! I had no idea what Ackee was.. And now I know it's DELICIOUS!  When they make it anyways.

Located next to most of the other prepared food vendors in the northern end of the main floor, Stella's has a monopoly on Antiguan cuisine in Halifax. Serving up the likes of curry chicken, jerk chicken, curry goat, and oxtail, I was eager to try a couple of her meats and asked if there was some sort of combo plate which wasn't on the menu board. Luckily there was, and at $12 was a fair price, especially once you see your jam-packed container. The deal was for the oxtail and curry or jerk chicken, as well as rice and mixed veggies. I asked which she (Stella?) suggested and she didn't hesitate to say "jerk", so I went with that. After taking my container of Caribbean cuisine back to the office, I dug right in. The chicken was a thigh coated in a medium-dark brown sauce and the expected heavy seasoning. The meat was a little toward the dry side, but luckily the thigh is more forgiving than a breast would be. The flavour was delicious; jerk seasonings are complex and unique to every cook. This one was spicy, but it didn't beat your tongue to death with it, just enough to give a lingering front of the mouth burn that had me reaching for some liquid refreshment. The oxtail was chunks of bone with tender, rich meat around each piece, pulling away from the bone easily. The spice level was definitely easier going here, with just a pleasant warming effect. The plentiful seasoned rice had some black beans mixed in and both were cooked perfectly. The mixed veggies were comprised of wide slices of cabbage, carrot and zucchini and were a bit tangy, a sort of Caribbean coleslaw I suppose. The flavour helped balance out the richness of the other portions of my meal. It was a solid meal, especially considering that this is food from warming trays and not cooked to order like in a restaurant. The bang for your buck is quite good as well, especially considering the generous amount of protein in the dish. I won't be going to Antigua any time soon, but I will be making my way back to STELLAAAAA's. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Really enjoyed the jerk chicken and the mix of spices they use. The gravy that they pour on the rice is one of the best gravies I've had in my life. It has an amazing aroma and I just can't get enough of it! The peas (beans), are not something I normally would eat, but they taste so good in this rice recipe that I love them. I'm hoping to get that coconut spice cake one of these times if its there when I'm in, for now I got the rum cake which was good. I put a little caramel sauce on it when I got home. I'd been wanting to try them out for a while, but their usual home base of Dartmouth and my schedule this summer had not been working in my favour. The food stars finally aligned though when I was working one sunny weekend and Jamaica Lee was one of the trucks at Brunch at Bishop's. Once my work was taken care of for the moment, I made the jaunt up to Bishop's. Being around 2pm, there wasn't anyone lined up, so things went quickly. They had a small set of offerings: jerk or curry chicken with rice and peas, ox tail, beef patties, and "festival", which I would later learn were cornbread fritters. Thanks, Google. I went for the jerk chicken meal with rice and peas ($10), and tacked on a beef patty ($5) to sample some more of their wares while I had the opportunity. It just took a couple of minutes for everything to get packaged up while I took in the waterfront sights and sounds and chatted with the cool cats at Halifax Press. Back in the office under fluorescent lighting, I dug into my significant pile of food. The peas in the rice definitely looked more like red broad beans, but the name didn't matter much as it was tasty stuff; lightly seasoned, perfectly cooked rice that was even better with the jerk chicken sauce. The chicken was pleasantly plentiful - four hunks of drumstick and thighs, with a great jerk seasoning that was spicy but not oppressively so, and a light dash of sauce for some sweetness and more depth of flavour to the infamously complex jerk spices. I had a small bit of my co-worker's oxtail as well, and while I had the poor luck of choosing a piece that was more bone and fat, and less meat, the sauce had a fantastic mix of tomato and beef flavour. The beef patty was an impressive hue of orange, and was a decent size, although five bucks was kind of pushing it for something like this. The meat was heavily spiced and packed a good kick to it, but sadly the flavour of the beef itself got lost among the spice and other seasonings. I like a good beef patty, but probably wouldn't go for this again, saving my five notes for something else. Jamaica Lee is doing it right by keeping the menu concise, and the jerk chicken spicy, delicious and approachable. I'm glad I finally got to try them out, and will be keeping them in mind in the future for all of my jerked meat needs. PS. They really need to drop the "Style" from their name. Jamaican cuisine varies from household to household, and I don't think there's any/many people that are going to call BS on their food not being authentic Jamaican food.

I opted for the Jerk chicken - $10 taxes in. What a perfect blend of flavours and heat. JLS definitely does jerk chicken right! I wanted to savour the taste and flavours so bad, but I couldn't help it. I devoured it immediately! Good portions and I was full afterwards....but I still crave it every other day. Beef patties is next!
