Nice Selection, and a clean well-organized store, but it needs some customer service improvement: Found myself waiting in line (with about five other customers) while the young man at the register struggled to handle a return. Not blaming him, he was clearly new and hadn't been properly trained. I noticed the manager walking by a couple times yet never looking that way. After about ten minutes, the manager turned his head our way and I waved at him. Well, that triggered him, and as he opened a second register I got a litany of snotty, passive-aggressive comments. No "Sorry about the wait" or anything to me of the other customers who had been waiting patiently. In an attempt to de-escalate, I asked how he was doing. "Better than you." Wow. For an employee, I would shrug it off, as unemployment is low and it's hard to find people willing to work retail. But for the store manager? Unacceptable. The owners (The Schaefer family) need to have a talk with this "leader." read more

I love small hardware stores. In fact, I worked in 2 different small hardware stores (not Ace) in another city for a few years. They were both excellent in terms of customer service and product selection. Rule number 1 was that you never, ever, told a customer you ran out of something or didn't carry something; instead you brought them over to the computer, looked it up, and told them when it would be in stock, even if that meant placing a special order for them. That was obviously many years ago, but to this day they are both still very successful stores run by the same families. My biggest complaints about this particular Ace location are (1) their choice of which items/options to stock (2) high prices, and (3) an antiquated, convoluted returns process. For many common hardware or building supplies items, they either don't carry them, or they charge between 150 and 200% of what Lowes or Home Depot charge. For example, the only 2-1/2" construction screws they carry cost $14/lb, even though there are many 2-1/2" construction screws on their website for the price of about $10/lb. Do most people shopping at Ace really want to pay $4 more for a box of screws? Not in a town where so many of the residents are low income earners. I know small hardware stores have higher overhead and have trouble competing with large chains, but why carry only the most expensive option to make things worse? Home Depot's premium construction screws cost $8.47/lb, which is $5.50 less than the brand this store stocks. Knowing this, which screws would you carry if you ran a small hardware store; one with a $10 sticker price or one with a $14 sticker price? Plumbing fittings are another example, generally being around 200% of Lowes' prices. I've seen numerous similarly overpriced items at Ace. In an effort to extract more cash from your customers, you're just driving them toward the big chain stores. If I needed 4 boxes of different sized screws, I wouldn't hesitate to drive another 20 minutes to save at least $20. At least half the time I end up leaving the store empty handed, because I'd rather drive a little further than pay almost double. Finally, their returns process is incredibly complex and antiquated. A few weeks ago, I returned about $15 worth of merchandise - mostly small items. The process involved the labors of 2 employees; a manager to authorize the return and do the paperwork, and a cashier to issue the refund; a process that took up at least 20 minutes of their time, plus whatever time is required to restock the items. Throwing up barriers to discourage customer returns is a waste of labor and breeds dissatisfaction in the customer. All of this, together with most of the staff being unconcerned or defensive about these same issues, explains why I've only spent about $1000 at Ace in the past year, whereas I've spent at least $20,000 at HD and Lowes. My recommendations for a bigger piece of the pie: 1) Select your stock items more thoughtfully based on both utility and sticker price, 2) Modernize your returns process. PS. And about the "wanted poster" in your store. Theft is an expected event in any retail store and should be built into your pricing. Putting up a "wanted" poster for a whole year just makes you look like sulky sore losers. read more

My visits to Ace Hardware have always been enjoyable, which ever location I go to. They are always super nice and knowledgeable. I read the reviews about the other store on bee ridge and considered avoiding it. As it happens I had to get something last minute last night and they were open. The register person was having a bad day and you could tell. No one offer d to help me with what I was looked by for, and I walked past a couple employees, I felt they wanted to go home. I almost didn't want to even give DG ACE hardware another chance but I just went to the store on Clark Rd as I prefer to use smaller business in the area instead of driving to Lowes or HomeDepot. What a difference a few miles makes! I walked in and was greeted by an older gentleman and I asked where the nuts and bolts where, he saw the nut in my hand and just looking at it said 5/16 by 18. I already knew that as well but it was obvious he knew his parts well. I asked if it was in stainless steel and he said of course follow me this way. Found it and a few other bolts and nuts that i needed. I also hit the paint / drywall area and found what I needed quickly. At the register I was greeted kindly by the cashier ( not like the other store last night) she asked if I was a rewards member, which I thought I was but we could not find the phone number I used. She set me up with a new account and mentioned if I find the info for the other rewards account that I just need to call in to get them tied together. I believe the owner needs to work on the staff just up north but keep up the great work at the Clark store, while it is a bit out of my way, I will come here over the other store on bee ridge. read more

Beware of their advertisements. They lure you in by advertisinf different items at prices lower then Lowes or Home Depot. The only problem is they don't have sufficient quantities of the advertised product to last through the dates of the sale. They don't issue rain checks. I purchased a can of Ceramic Thin Set at this store yesterday that was previously returned by another customer because there was grout stuck on the outside of the can and even the cashier acknowledged that the can was used. I suggested that perhaps the store would take a couple of dollars off the price of $9.99 since it was already opened, used and not a full can. (This was the last can on the shelf.) The cashier looked at me as though I was crazy to ask this and charged me full price and wouldn't take the time to call a manager to the front because their were at least 3 or 4 customers waiting behind me. So I made sure the other customers heard that this item was used and that ACE was still selling it to me at full price even though another customer had used some of the contents. This is why I try to never go to ACE Hardware. There prices are higher then Lowe's and Home Depot and they don't care if you are satisfied or not. I only went to ACE because Lowe's and Home Depot do not carry this product. read more
