My wife was sent to Dallas for training for some new equipment in their lab shortly after 911…read more Typically a representative from her group would be sent down to train on the new equipment then come back and teach the others in the lab how to use it. She was selected to go to Dallas so I tagged along since the hotel was paid for. (I had to get my own airfare). While she was in class during the day I had a chance to bop around Dallas & take in the sights. One of the buildings I wanted to see was The Infomart. The Infomart is one of the largest buildings in Dallas. This the worlds only information processing marketing center. You might ask why would I want to see this building? Well since you asked I'm going to tell you. (Even if you didn't ask lol). I was an architect & "The Infomart" is a replica of The Crystal Palace that was a huge iron & glass structure originally built in 1851 in London's Hyde Park. The Crystal Palace burnt down Nov 30,1936. As I approached The Infomart I could see it off of Stemmons Freeway. I pulled into the parking lot and I was going to take some pictures of the building when 4 security vehicles converged on me. Awww how nice to sent out a greeting party. They asked me why I was there and what I was doing. I explained to them that I was an architect from Chicago & why I was interested in the building. They radioed in and told me I had to clear it w/their security office first. Just so you know this was a few days after 911 so there was a heightened sense of security. They told me the security office was inside on the 4th floor. As I entered the building the security guard at the entry told me to go up to the 4th floor and took me to the elevator that would take me to the 4th floor. As I got off of the elevator and was walking in the direction of the security office. Cowboy Bob was walking down the corridor. Now I call him cowboy Bob for a reason. He was bow legged wearing cowboy boots, blue jeans & a cowboy hat. He asked me kin I help you in his southern drawl. I told him I was headed to the security office. He announced I'M SECURITY & what did I want. I explained to him once again who I was and why I was there. He said you kin take 1 picture then you gotta git. Yup nuttin like southern hospitality & charm for dis city slicker. One picture?? Are you kidding me? Any who when I got to the ground floor there was yet another security guard to greet me. She said you kin take 1 photo then you gotta git. I was about to take my 1 photo & she said you can't take it there and turned me around to take THE PICTURE SHE ALLOWED. (It was a very nice wall lol). I mean WTF? When I was in Europe I took 37 rolls of film, 20 print rolls & 17 slide rolls. 1 PICTURE!!!! Are you kidding me? What's the point? After I took my 1 picture she escorted me to the door, walked me to my car (kind of like our first date) & the security vehicle(s) escorted me to the outer boundaries of the parking lot and made shure that I was gonna git outta there. So needless to say I wasn't able to really look around like I would have like to, but being of Japanese American descent I was obviously a security threat lol. It's really a shame that I couldn't walk through and do a more Comprehensive documentation of this replica of the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park London. It is a beautiful replica of the original w/it's glass barrel vaulted entry & barrel vaulted skylights running the length of the building. The walkway I was on the 4th floor was a raised walk that looked down 4 levels into the barrel vaulted atrium.
