My travel companion and myself decided to wander the streets of Amsterdam, fresh off our train from Bruges. We ended up in the red light district and while it's a fun location to sight see a bit, there isn't much in the way of food after 10 pm. It was rainy, windy, cold, and our options were few and far between.
A few streets over, we found Deyacos. Our expectations were low--touristy parts of town are not known for good food. This place does indeed look "touristy" with its travel decor mixed with modern pieces, but we were hungry. And of course, our first impression was not the best when the waiter told us with a sad face they were not serving liquor, despite a full bar being visible at the front. We purchased a bottle of wine and waited for what we assumed would be underwhelming food.
Reader, we were not underwhelmed at all. The wine was reasonably priced and perfectly tasty. Our fried chicken appetizer was fantastic! The breading was super flavorful (Holland is not a land of spice), the chicken was juicy, I wanted more! Next up was the pasta--we got the arrabiata with chicken and it was solidly delicious.
Were we just hungry? Maybe. But the food here exceeded our expectations and didn't break the bank. If you find yourself in downtown Amsterdam and need a late night bite, this is the place to go! read more
