This was the second time visiting Dexter's Deli and this time, our dog came with us just to make sure that he liked the place and could pick out his favorite bone. Actually he found the new "slow bowl" full of kibble and decided to make sure it worked for him. Had to find a dog cake for my dog's birthday and this was one of the first places to come up. Drove up and was glad to find a bunch of cakes that you can just grab and defrost for the next day. Amazing price at $20 and it was split between 7 dogs. The cake is humans grade so you can eat it. Came in and stumbled across this place as I was visiting from Santa Barbara and my fur babies bday is this weekend. I came in here twice the past two days I was in town.. that says a lot how awesome this store is ! I bought my dog a treat, two toys , and came back for his cake. They even put his name on there free of charge. Such a great spot. Parking is out front , but space is super tight and shared with the surrounding business. But the last two days I was there I had no issues parking. I look forward to each time I vacay in out there, I'd take a "must " visit to pick up my paw-child a toy, treat, or even a cake. I love this place! If you love your pet, come here This place is the best, we love getting lamb and liver treats for our pup here. They have nothing but high quality and speciality items at this pet store. Staff are friendly as well. We recently got a new hands free leash and harness from here is all. The staff are friendly and always give our dog treats. It is on the pricier side, but worth it. The parking lot is awful and tiny though (just warning you!) it's north park! I want to start off with I regret not getting the woman's name who helped me. Before I headed over I called to check for a specific item (an item I thought I wanted/needed). She was very genuine and confirmed that they had plenty of wholesome foods inside the store even though the brand I was inquiring about was not sold there. She even offered to order some to the store. Very thoughtful. Once I arrived the excellent service continued, she remembered our phone conversation from earlier that morning and began breaking down all the different styles of food and how they can be introduced into my cats diet. Disclosure, I'm moving away from highly processed kibble to a more wholesome diet. She was knowledgeable about multiple brands and gave numerous recommendations. Even showed me some good tinctures made for liver/gastrointestinal health. I got a mix of (frozen) raw food, freeze dried, can, another better alternative kibble bag. So far my cats have loved everything I've brought home [except the no longer free feed all day on kibble]. She even handed me a couple fliers for how to start raw diets and a clinic that does dental cleanings. 5 stars, possibly 6. The best part a rewards program ? 1& 3 Saturday are "caturdays" where cat stuff is 20% off. I'm satisfied. read more

I've gone to Dexter's Deli for two years now and I love my experience each time! The only thing "bad" I can think of is the parking situation (spaces are so tiny and hard to maneuver around) but this has nothing to do with the store haha. I've gotten my dog a birthday cake, a birthday cupcake, and some birthday hats before. They're able to write something on the cakes which is awesome. In my most recent visit, I bought a bag of peanut butter and beef balls to put into a toy but when I got home, I noticed they were all smushed inside. I called them the same day and the lady that I was talking to was so understanding, helpful, and kind! I came back the same week and they exchanged my bag. It was our dog's first adoptaversary and we were motivated to make the day very special for her, so I called in advance to order the bone cake in princess pink. I was surprised to hear that you couldn't really "order" it. Basically, they get cakes in on Thursday, and can't be certain what they are going to get, but if they do get it they will hold it for you. Well, I probably called three times to see if it came in and to ensure that they would hold it for me until after work. They said they had it and they did. So that Friday, after work, it took a bit of fighting in the parking lot (small, crowded and very narrow), but I managed to get to Dexter's Deli to get the cake. It was adorable, but it said "Happy Birthday" and I wanted it to say "Happy Adoptaversary" but they don't make or decorate the cakes in house, and they all come the same way. However, they were able to put my dog's name on the cake, but somehow they didn't even have matching white icing to put the name on so we got it in an odd shade of hot pink. I know it is a dog cake and some people might wonder why I care, but I was spending $36 for a dog cake for photo ops and fun with my dog, so of course I care. I did get a chance to browse around the store while they were writing on the cake. It is quite overpriced, but they do have several cute birthday hats and some beautifully painted cookies for dogs. I decided to get her a squeaky ball and a bag of "Gotcha Day" treats. I left feeling a bit disappointed in my cake experience, but when I brought it home, my husband was super happy with how it looked, and my dog absolutely loved it. It is really much too big for one dog, so she has pieces in the freezer that will last weeks. The cake actually looked really cute in all of her pictures, and I don't know where to get a cuter cake, so I decided to still give Dexter's Deli four stars. read more

Dexter's Deli is located in the same plaza as La Creperie with limited parking. Dexter's Deli is also right next door to Verbatim Books in North Park (behind it). My husband, our little girl dog and I decided to stop by this pet store on a Sunday morning, around 10:30 am. My husband decided to get our little girl a jerky (I only paid $2.36 for a thin, wide slice of beef). She was so happy that she placed the dried meat in her mouth as we walked out of the store and to the car (lol). Employees were friendly when we were visiting the store. Although somewhat on the small side, the store had plenty of items you'd need for your pet. There is also some baked items that includes cakes, treats, pupcakes. The next time I visit Verbatim Books (which allows leashed dogs inside by the way), I will make sure to make a stop at Dexter's Deli too. read more

Came on my pups bday to get him a bday cake! They had them premade in the frozen section and you just thaw them at home for about an hour and you're good to go. They were so cute and also had the option of cupcakes, or mini cupcakes. I ordered the small round one for my boy. The ingredients are human grade (which I love) and edible by people as well. There is sugar in the cake which is why I opted for the small size and gave him thing slices so he wouldn't get into a sugar high (but I think he still did). I also ate a slice of cake and so did a few of my family members. It was good to me! Almost like a banana bread but not quite. This store is sooo cute! I can't wait to come back and look around more. They have so many natural food products and snacks. The store is so clean and the staff are awesome. My dogs were greeted with a treat upon entering. Wow! Simply put. My friend bought a pup cake for her puppy's birthday and my husband and I thought it would be a great place to get a cake for his work's elderly "shop dog." Rocky is such a great boy and we wanted to treat him with something special. I had my husband call ahead, order, and pay over the phone. I work right down the street and thought it'd be easier if I just ran in and out on my lunch break. Finding out the challenging parking of this place made me thankful we had prepared. It was kind of a nightmare to park in. Their little shopping center is a popular one, right in the heart of North Park where many people walk. So be prepared for that. But definitely don't let it sway your motivation to visit this amazing Pet Deli. I was greeted with a pawesome pup cake that was pleasantly customized as such. We love coming to Dexter's Deli! Especially for our pup's birthday. We've been coming here for 4 years now and the pupcake is always a hit! For her first birthday we got her a whole cake! That lasted a couple weeks as a delicious frozen treat! The 5" cake is great to share if you have other pups (RUFFly up to 6 dogs)! Please note that these cakes are only available to purchase in store and not online. Dexter's is one of the few shops that sell cupcakes and cakes for your dogs at a reasonable price! I normally take my pups here twice a month, usually after visiting Nate's Dog Park and every single time I come in I can expect to amazing service. Usually my girl dog Dakota is very weary of snacks given to her but when a team member offers her a treat and she accepts I usually buy the item. Yesterday I came by with my pups and stocked them back up on their favorite wet food and some treats, as we were checking out a team member asked and offered a little freeze dried pig hearts by Small Batch. These are quality treats, a little pricey and my dogs favorites! Thankfully the team member at Dexter's Deli was really patient, kind and generous after my two poms kept asking for more! Dexter's Deli knows more about cat food than regular pet stores. I assume it's the same for dog food, but I'm a cat person. Pet food is what they do. So they have stuff other places don't, and they can make pretty good predictions about what your pet will eat, and cats can be picky. The only issue (at the North Park store) is parking. That's not their fault. I especially like the big poster that says: "I have lived with many Zen masters. All of them were cats." read more
