Amazing, I called ahead about an hour before they closed. I had picked up my friend's dog from her boarding and she smelled horrible. I asked if she could get a wash before they closed. Even though the rule was tubs close an hour before their actual closing the owner said come in!! I had never been here but LOVE how the tubs are walk up with steps, no ramp. He let me take a tattered towel with me (which I have yet to return) since I wasn't planning on washing her nor did I blow dry I didn't want my car to get wet. They had a great selection of food and treats. If I lived closer I'd visit more often. They carried a lot of national treats like duck hearts and a favorite brand of ours farm hounds. We'll be back. A great place for the highest quality pet food for your fur child (dogs/cats). Always knowledgeable staff that will always offer your dog a treat. So I'm always that dog mommy that's buying whatever they're giving my fur child! Go ahead, call me a suckkkker! LOL. That included the Papa Tatanka dehydrated bison they used to carry. As I found out the other day due to a shortage of bison, the supplier had to discontinue the bison (sad face) However, Howlistic is one of the few places in town that carries Open Farm dog food. I'm only reviewing for doggie items as I don't have a cat. But Open Farm is one of the few brands that's pasture raised, grass fed without antibiotics or hormones. I figure if that's what I'm feeding myself these days, why not feed my loving fur companion something comparable? Also why I LOVE Howlistic?!!! Because they won't sell you a felt tennis ball!!! Yesss. No more neon felt all over your floors. And no expensive doggy dental visit because your dog swallowed that felt. Yesss. I wished more pet stores would sell these inexpensive rubber balls that lasts for months (unless your dog is like my dog that just loves burying them in the sand when I'm not looking). Our doggy loves to run into the ocean, roll in the dirt, and generally get very stinky and dirty, so dog washes are essential. Only problem, our otherwise easy going-pup HATES to be washed. I usually take him to OB to get him washed, which gets the job done, but today, didn't want to battle the OB crowds, so took him to Howlistic, and it was like the difference between going to 24 Hour Fitness, and pampering yourself at a spa (no offense to 24 Hour Fitness; I go there, too). But, instead of metal boxes, marble baths. Instead of squirt bottles of brandless soap, an assortment of beautiful-smelling high-end shampoos, a warm lavender towel to cleanse his face (that you don't have to wash off - bonus - our pup definitely doesn't like water in his face). To top it off, the service was over-the-top welcoming. We had never been, and were in a bit of a rush, but Lynn made us, especially Bo, feel so at home, gently and kindly offering him little treats of ducks, and whole little fish that he crunched like potato chips. Soon he was much more at ease. I'm almost reluctant to write the review and give away the secret, because even on a Saturday, it wasn't crowded; there were 3 tubs, and I was the only one washing, unlike the often long lines in OB. By the way, they also are a full pet store w/ nice variety of high-quality foods, accessories, etc. Brought home a bag of the little dried fish he loved so much - little wild caught whole rainbow smelt - apparently a really good source of Omega-3 fatty acids and protein - always knew they were good for us; apparently, good for your dog, too. Update: Howlistic now has a doggy wash area. Very friendly service. And I have seen small (Apricot) to large dogs (Great Dane) fit in those tubs so it fits all dogs. I have a dog that I love. Yes, my dog is a bit high maintenance. Why, you ask?? Well let's consider the fact that he's allergic to: -grass -turkey -spiders -rice -wheat or any grain for that matter -ants and most other insects Alas, we arrive at Howlistic after having tried brand after brand of specialized dog food. The store is immaculate - always clean and never smells like "dog" even though dogs are constantly in/out of here. The store is well organized and carries high-quality brands of food, toys, supplements and accessories. The service is always friendly and fast. They support local organizations and are environmentally conscious. Become a regular and you'll receive a hemp bag to reuse each time you shop there. Most impressive was when I came in (pregnant) with my pup and purchased 20lbs of raw food for him, the worker opened the door for me to exit and also carried the food out to my car to give me a hand. They have the raw food (Bravo! brand) that we give our pup and while more expensive than a kibble diet, it is reasonably priced. This is THE BEST dog wash in San Diego. And it's right by my house, and I love supporting neighborhood business! They have big basins that are easy to get into, lots of warm towels, all healthy non chemical shampoos, and there has always been parking in the lot when I go there. The people that work there are so welcoming and nice. Just moved here from Austin and I was looking for a healthy pet store. Walked in and browsed for 20 minutes without anyone greeting me nor offering help. The lady who works there is pretty standoffish. The other staff I've encountered has been way nicer. Also, they should post their hours for the dog wash as it closes an hour before the store closes, which seems like a waste of business on their end. Howlistic saved a friendship. Visiting from Alaska Luna, my Tibetan Terrier, fell in love with the beach. She was so filled with sand I just couldn't bring her into my friends beautifully clean home. A Tibetan terrier cannot just be washed, they need to be dried too or they will get mats. Howlistic to the rescue with a great dog washing set up and a top of the line hair dryer specifically for cainine coats. The staff was incredibly helpful. Last Sunday I needed to to pick up a little gift for Hillary N.'s dog Wallace's 'Coming Out' Party. No, Wallace isn't gay, he's been stuck inside for three months with heartworm and he needed a doggy partay! So on my way over to Pioneer Park, I stopped into Howlistic and bought Wallace some salmon treats for getting out of the clink. As I walked in, I noticed that Howlistic isn't just another pet supply store. Nope, it's a freakin' doggy boutique for your chic canine. It's like Howlistic was designed for the Whole Foods generation of dogs. Raw food, supplements, healthy foods, holistic snacks and boutique-y items like smashing collars, swank doggy hoodies, much-too-expensive beds and elegant food and water bowls. They had some pretty awesome stuff! Even though I haven't had a dog in a few years, I saw some familiar types of dog owners at Howlistic: The Freakishly Neurotic Owner: You know the one, they own some small breed dog like a Lhasa Apso, a Chihuahua or a Shipperke named Muffin, Nacho or Winky. The owners are more high-maintenance than the dogs themselves. The high-strung owner runs around the store in a spin worried about proper sized dog toys, whether kibble will choke their little Precious and completely freaking out when any other dog comes near. These owners often have very high-pitched voices that tend to grate on people's nerves. The Overly-Relaxed Owner: This guy lets his lovable untrained rescue dog loose in the store, allowing it to get into the cookies at ground level, sniffing other dog's asses, peeing in the corner and chewing up anything it can find. When the dog goes to greet someone and jumps up, the relaxed owner will chuckle and say something like, 'Yeah he does that.' This guy lets his dog run the show and leaves utter destruction in his wake. 'Uh that's okay...he didn't mean it.' The Projecting Owner: This owner doesn't have children of her own, so she projects everything onto her 'doggy child.' She dresses her dog in cute little clothing that matches what she is wearing, rolls it around in a stroller, uses a bottle to give it water and worst of all, when you say hello to her dog, the owner will speak to you in a 'doggy voice' and introduce the dog to you. 'Hi, my name ish Pickles and I yuv my mommy.' The sanity of this owner should be questioned and if you come across her, you should proceed with caution. The Over-Protective Owner: She's the one who is constantly worried that her dog might get hurt at any given moment and it's her responsibility to make sure that NEVER happens! She's always standing within two feet of her dog carrying a first aid kit and Rescue Remedy. She's always looking for the latest supplements and health care herbs for her dog. When the dog is around other dogs, she's ready to jump at a moment's notice to fend off those awful, mangy mutts. Be on the lookout for these dog owners the next time you're in Howlistic and give the doggies some love! read more
