After calling Dex's Automotive in a serious predicament, I was blown away by their assistance, hospitality, and genuine interest in my problem. The owner drove over to my broken down car, made a minor adjustment and was able to get my car back to his shop without a tow. The part that I bought from a local shop wasn't working and I had to go back for a trade-in. Dex drove over to the shop to make sure they refunded my money and was very supportive through the entire process. He even kept his doors opened, beyond normal hours, in order to fix my vehicle so that I would have it for my trip, he even offered to come in Saturday morning to complete the repair. I have done my own work on my vehicles for most of my adult life, but I just didn't have the time to do a major repair, so I heard about Dex's and thought I'd give him a shot. I took my truck to Dex's because of a severe coolant leak, and Dex determined the leak was from a corroded freeze plug. He fixed the problem and I got my truck back. I was satisfied at the time. When I got the truck back, Dex told me I needed to flush my radiator because it was really fouled. He asked me if I wanted him to put coolant in or just straight water. I asked him to put coolant in since it might be a while before I could flush the system out and I didn't want to run just water. Fast forward four months and I am now rebuilding the engine in my truck. NOT because of anything Dex did, mind you. It's a very high mileage engine. When I drained the cooling system, I discovered just plain old rusty water. No anti-freeze at all. Then, imagine my surprise when I pop the cylinder heads off and find the old freeze plug INSIDE THE HEAD in the coolant channel. Just pound the old one INTO THE ENGINE and pound a new one in behind it, eh? Nobody will ever know. The price was right, but I guess you get what you pay for. It's shops like this that have caused me to do my own work on my vehicles. I'm not impressed. read more

I've never had any problems with customer service or the quality of repairs. He gives you a list of upcoming issues your car may have and at what point on a scale from good to bad they're currently at. His employees are great too! I had a problem getting my car smog certificate at another center and was really concerned that I was going to have to make a major car repair to pass the emission test of the smog check station. This auto repair center had taken the vehicle to another station and it passed and turns out I did not have to replace major car parts like I might have with the other garages. They gave me a ride to and from my residence and the service was really quick. I had my car back in less than a day. If it was not for this auto repair, I would have had to make unnecessary and costly repairs to pass the smog check. The dealer where I purchased my vehicle was going to charge me a lot more than I actually paid. The mechanics here will fix what is really in need of repair. I highly recommend this garage as a fair price and great auto repair shop. read more

Dex and his team are the very best! We have gone to him since 1985, when he was lead mechanic at Louis Jew Mazda in Richmond. We followed when he established his own garage and have been with him ever since. He has consistently kept our cars at their best. He and his staff are extremely personable and knowledgeable. His charges have always been reasonable and below other estimates. Dex was there for us when my mother-in-law's car was in an accident a couple of years ago and needed to be checked out for road worthiness. He and the team identified the problems and made necessary repairs. The car wound up being totaled by the insurance company and Dex helped us through the process so she could keep it as a salvage car. Recently, our 2005 Nissan Altima came to a sudden, unexpected stop. Dex and crew got it running again and helped us sell it as-is. He also helped us find a couple of newer, used Altimas in the area and checked them out personally for us. As soon as we bought the 2012 Altima we chose, we took it straight to his garage for a thorough going over. We paid cash, and the discount we received from the dealer paid for the repairs. Dex's Automotive is the best auto repair and service business I have ever used. The quality is always top notch and the prices more than fair. In addition to hourly rates that are much less than the auto dealers, they don't charge for more time than the work actually takes. I have used them for my BMWs and paid between 20% and 30% of what BMW wanted to charge. Some of the difference is because BMW wanted to do more than was necessary to fix the problem. I originally brought my car in for an oil change and tire rotation, everything seemed great and they were very nice. I went to pay and they told me that i needed a running light changed....for $300... and I had an oil leak that would cost close to $1000 because of the part that needed to be replaced. I should mention that I'm 7 months pregnant and when I asked if I needed to get it fixed right away or if it was ok for a bit he said "it's pretty dangerous". I booked an appointment for a couple days later, stressing about how I'm going to pay for this with a baby on the way. I decided to take my car in to a place a use to go to regularly but was a lot further away for a second opinion. They told me that there was no oil leak, that when you get your oil changed a valve gets loosened and if you don't tighten it it will look like there's a leak, they replaced the oil filter, assured me that everything was fine and charged me about $70. Then I asked about the running light and told them that I was told it would be $300 to repair because "the whole bumper had to be removed to replace the light"...turns out it only cost about $20 to repair and the bumper obviously didn't have to be removed. I am so incredibly disappointed by the people at Dex's automotive. I went there because of all these great reviews and how close it was to my house and I feel like they tried to take advantage of a hormonal pregnant woman. read more

I took my car in for an estimate. I wasn't sure what was going on specifically with my car and heard Dex's was a great place to service cars. Sure enough they exceeded my expectations. They suggested what may be wrong and advised that it was probably too much of an investment for a 21 year old car, therefore I can't speak of the quality of work - still deciding on my car dilemma. If I could I would give this place zero stars. I was recommended by a friend. At first I thought this was a good place to get my car repaired. My car was in and out of this shop and at the shop more than in was in my driveway. 8 months of back and forth. One thing breaks over and over, a refurbished part I was told was from the car manufacture (was actually not). The same part replace 3 times to my knowledge. This part broke 3 other parts that I had to replace. After thousands of dollars and stress, car still would not work properly. I bring it to another mechanic, and puts in the actual manufacture's part, and now my car is fixed. Now Dex is telling me it is not the alternator he put in. When will this ever end? I think Dex's is honest, but the people he has working for him are dishonest and just plain stupid and disorganized. Don't bring your car here for anything but an oil change. Being from Denver I had to really cross my fingers hoping that the place I had to stop at would treat me fairly and give me an honest price. This place did just that! Not only was Dexter just a great guy to do Business with, but his shop is clean and the people working with him made me feel comfortable. There is probably a lot more good to be said for Dex's shop and I would not undermine those things stated by others by degrading the capacity of this shop to service its customers well. In 2014 I used Dex's Automotive for an inspection of a vehicle we found in his immediate area. Because I help people buy cars around the country, I am used to finding great shops and then enlisting them to complete a thorough pre-purchase inspection of a vehicle. And my experience in 2014 must have been favorable or I would not have kept their name/number for the future, should I need assistance with a prepurchase inspection of another used car. My disappointment this time around had little to do with the determination of leaks found in critical areas. This was helpful. However, I made it known that I was concerned about the tires and wanted to know how old the tires were on a very low mileage (43k) 2003 Honda. It is inconceivable that after asking the shop to look for the DOT date code on the tires that they were unable to find them and share them with me. All tires have codes that tell you when the tires were manufactured (with 4 digits, the first two noting the week the tire was manufactured, and the last two noting the year the tire was manufactured). I was told that there was not date codes that would warn us if the year of manufacture was more than 6 years from today. Why is this important? Tire material deteriorates based on the age since it was created (not based on whether it looks good, has good tire tread, etc). Vehicles with tires older than 6 years are noted as having disintegrated on the highway and blown out on very rough road surfaces. Despite the expertise of Dex and his staff, I had to tell them where to look, and when they didn't find them on the wall of one side of one tire, they either didn't look at the other side to find the age code. This is a significant safety concern, and searching it out on the internet will present one with instances where serious, even deadly accidents have occurred, simply because the tire material had degraded under the tread, and the driver was unaware of the inherent danger of driving on very old tires. Knowing that the vehicle had likely sat around for a long time, as evidenced by indications that rodents actually had eaten part of the insulator/insulation under the hood, Dex told me that the tires likely have a "flat spot" on them. Dex was aware that any defect or concern with elderly tires is a safety matter, he told me that you won't see the "flat spots" but you'll feel them if you drive the car at a reasonably high speed. Then I learned that, after spending $90 for a pre-purchase inspection, that Dex did not think it was important to take this Honda out on the road for a road test. To my knowledge EVERY PRE-PURCHASE INSPECTION includes a road test to see if the tires are pulling (alignment issue) or if there is vibration caused by any number of things that one might not be able to see during the visual part of the inspection. And since Dex was already aware of the possibility of a "flat spot" being exposed only by a road test, it is beyond me that Dex would charge us $90 and not include a road test as part of the vehicle inspection. So yes, Dex was helpful in providing key information about leaks, which are sometimes commonplace on old Hondas, but disregarded the NORMAL PRACTICE of road-testing a vehicle, especially when the person paying for the inspection was long-distance (unable to do the test drive in person). Would I assume that this is a good and reputable shop? Based on the feedback of others, and even my own experience two years ago, I might very well say "yes." But so far as taking care of a pre-purchase inspection for someone who entrusted Dex to do everything possible to determine the vehicle's condition when that person was not able to see or drive the vehicle in person, the total disregard of taking the car out on a road test seems totally unacceptable and irresponsible. This is especially the case when we are not able to see and drive the vehicle being considered in person. No private buyer ever considers buying a used car without taking it on a test drive, Why in the world would Dex ignore this aspect of this inspection, and only reveal it to us AFTER we paid him $90 for this inspection. I couldn't be more disappointed by the fact that this highly reputable shop would not take the initiative to road test a used car for a customer, whether local or long distance. But when there were already concerns about the tires having sat around unmoved for an extended length of time, and knowing that the only way to tell if the lack of use/movement could only be revealed by a road test, I believe that Dex demonstrated that even good mechanics make stupid decisions. And not knowing where to find the age-since-manufacture seems elementary, given that many quality shops know to look at tire age as part of a comprehensive inspection. read more

First time I brought my car in the work they did was fine. No loaner car available but didn't charge me an arm and a leg. The second time I brought it in they kept for 6 days, over a weekend. Seemed to not really be interested in working on it. Claimed they were missing tools or what have you. The car went in with 1 cracked spark plug and cracked spark plug cable so they covered them with a rubber sheathing and zip ties. I was fed up after 6 days of no car and no loaner and it was beginning to cause problems getting to work. I took the car to dealership who provided a loaner car and fix the problem and the two others caused by over-torqued spark plugs. The dealership laughed at "repairing" spark plug cables instead of replacing them. They also found mis-matched spark plugs installed. I asked for all the parts back so I can inspect and sure enough, some unacceptable workmanship. Suffice to say, I won't be bringing my car back to Dex's. If you want inexpensive service with an inexpensive price, go with Dex. If you want quality car care service go somewhere else. read more

It was a simple fix and they were so gracious to hellp at the last minute. They also have given me rides and when there was no option brought me my car. They rock! I was recommended this shop by a friend and have been hot and cold with them ever since. There was an instance my first time where they tried to charge me for a battery i didn't need. We ended up in a disagreement, but regardless, they got their money. Later on i got a new, easier car to work on so i continued service there as it was close to work. They were really great, did effective work and did not bullshit me. Finally this summer i bought yet a new car, and brought it to them to inspect since i had been doing decent business with them, I even drove from Sacramento. Well they ended up charging me $80.00 for a safety inspection...told me problems that were incorrect as reviewed by two other mechanics and my common sense, and did not find the answer to the original problem i had asked about in the first place (my entire engine vibrating=motor mounts). Said they would call back with a quote to the lesser problems, never did. It's cool guess they didn't want my business anyways, enjoy your 80 bucks for doing nothing. and couple grand for doing something. read more

Called to make a appointment for 1pm to have my rotors and brakes replaced, I already had the parts I just needed an install. I spoke with Susie who then advised me to bring my car in at 8, I said I didn't hav a ride until 1pm. "Would 1pm be okay?" And I clearly asked if they had time. Then she offered a ride and to bring my car at 8:30am, so I happily said yes. I was excited to hear I could drop it off earlier. I Droped my car off at 8:20am. Suzzie the front desk women mentioned that my vehicle would be done around noon.1pm rolls by no word on my car, I finally decided to call. Susie notified me that there were two "emergency" cars ahead, making me feel unimportant, she said it would be done in an hour. Shortly after Dexter called me asking me why I wanted the new brakes, uhh well it's squealing and not braking effectively ... He said well u hav about a year left for my brakes. Okay fine but really u wait till the time I was expecting the car to be finished to call me and tell me that! He acted as if he didn't want to even do it. As if I was inconveniencing him. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME! I hope there "emergency" cars make up for what business they could of had. Horrible customer service, it was clearly appearent from speaking with Dexter customer service isn't a priority here. Couldn't even apologize and excuse after excuse. He said it would be done by three so an 1 hour turns to two after it was there for 5, so 7hours for two brakes and rotors. oh there were cars ahead well maybe your front desk should keep that in mind and take me at 1pm like I originally requested.
