Bring your bucks...amex or whatever high limit card you've got. The Devonshire Club is located in the financial district in downtown London. It's a little tucked away which gives it a nice bit of privacy from the main streets which was nice. I'll be upfront and say that it's for pricey. We were traveling without pre-booking rooms and we ended up having to look a very last minute room. Some of the other very high end hotels were charging around 800 to 900 pounds for a single bed room...(for those that don't know, double beds are not common and will cost a lot of money). Don't know how but we ended up settling for the Devonshire. I was able to get a suite for one night at the low cost of 500ish pounds. The real question though is, was it worth it?
This was the largest room I stayed in during my 10 days in Europe. It was a single bed that was slightly bigger than an American two bed. It was more old school in the design and the bathroom was huge. The shower had no walls/doors with a rain shower head. Rain shower heads are amazing! There were the usual coffee, water as well as some nice towels. The bed was comfortable although the view isn't breathtaking.
The breakfast buffet was alright. They have a basic and a deluxe options. The basics include a continental breakfast. You get some fruit, eggs, pastries, cereal, yogurt, your choice of tea/coffee. The deluxe includes the hot food. I went with the basic and I had a nice breakfast but at that price you can probably find a better, more exciting breakfast elsewhere but if you've got the ends it's not a bad spread.
The Devonshire Club is an actually member's club that hosts a variety of events. They have a downstairs bar and a library bar which is upstairs. Both bars are very nice but the library bar is beautiful. It has a very chill, modern relaxing vibe and they even play some good background music. We were served at the upstairs bar by an Italian gentleman named Maximo. He was very polite, friendly and provided awesome service. Great bar conversation and he made a nice aperol spritz for my friend who didn't want to drink anything heavy. The bar is managed by a master bartender who is also a very nice guy. They served a nice bar mix that keeps the taste buds fresh with smoky and spicy nuts and wasabi peas. He knew I had enjoyed an old fashioned upstairs so he made me his twist on a gin old fashioned. It was potent but I really enjoyed it. He was able to highlight the gin, in addition he used one of his cherries that he had soaked in gin, which really helped complete the cocktail.
One important thing to note is that staff was very polite and respectful. They made sure that my stay was pleasant and they never made me feel out of place. So back to the big question, is it worth it? If you've got the money yes. You get the American sized room with British customer service. I don't know the sizes on the smaller rooms so it's possible they are smaller than US rooms but if you've got the money I think you'll enjoy your stay. read more
